It made me feel sick to have it on my machines, and so I got rid of it.
In a pinch, if worse comes to the worst, I will install it and use it.
However, I find using NVDA very pleasurable.
It feels so light when loading Windows screens and web pages, in contrast to
JFW which feels like dragging a net of fish up on the beach.
Probably there are other metaphors, but I'm trying to point to the fact that it
just feel super sluggish, not to mention the fact that it is over-engineered,
that is, way too complicated, and so it got in the way of my work.

Unless I mis-understood the sales representative, I was informed that there's
no media sent that we have to download JAWS. But yes, with the packaged
version of JAWS, it does come with nice training materials. You can download
the FS Reader training materials though which cover different topics.

Hi Ted:

There’s good news on this one.

JAWS supplies most of its training materials in DAISY format. They can be
downloaded through the FS Reader program which comes with JAWS.The training
materials are also supplied on the JAWS DVD.There’s over 11
hours of basic training material available (no, you won’t need to listen to all
of it).

You can either use FS Reader to play the material or your own DAISY player.

You don’t have to switch between your program and FS Reader to pause, resume,
rewind or fast-forward. Here’s a note from their FS Reader getting started
guide:

Using FSReader with Narrated Audio and Training Materials
With FSReader you have the ability to play, pause, skip ahead, or skip
backwards through narrated audio DAISY materials without actually having to be
in the FSReader user interface. This is GREAT for training purposes. What this
means is that you can be listening to a DAISY book about training and open a
practice document, for example, in Microsoft® Word or Internet Explorer, or any
other application. You can stay in the practice document and still control
FSReader audio with this feature! You no longer have to press ALT+TAB to move
between the FSReader program and back again to your practice files. Just stay
within the practice file, and use the following keystrokes to control the
FSReader audio in the background (if audio is available in the DAISY book):

Play or Pause Audio (toggle), CTRL+P
Skip Ahead 5 seconds, CTRL+PERIOD
Skip Back 5 seconds, CTRL+COMMA
NOTE: Since CTRL+P is also normally used as a hot key within applications to
access the print dialog box, when FSReader is running, this hot key will not
open the print dialog box. Instead, if FSReader is open in the background, this
hot key controls the audio play and pause feature. If you need to print a
document while FSReader is running, use the application's regular menu commands
to print. Normally, that means just press ALT+F to open the file menu of that
program and then press P to open the print dialog box.

Also, you can copy the training materials to your own DAISY player. They work
well on the NLS player. Once downloaded, the training materials are located in
the folder C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Training. There’s only one
DAISY book that doesn’t have audio and that wouldn’t work on the NLS player,
but, everything else is there.

Hope this helps.

If you will happen to have an installation CD for any version prior to
WE7, you will find the Eloquence files there.

When inserting the CD, let Setup start. When prompted to choose your
method of installation, you have to go under Advanced. I seem to
remember you had to press V, or maybe Alt-V. There you would find the
voice installation, which could be run without having to install the
whole screen reader, which of course would overwrite your current

The above is all taken from memory, so forebare with me, should any of

Re: Windows ten creators' update issues.

I installed the creater update yesterday and did so using narrator. The
install went quickly in about 20 minutes and had no problem with the
update. Everything was spoken by narrator and I did have a keyboard
hooked to my desktop computer. I was actually surprised by how fast the
upgrade went.

Now my question is what has changed by the upgrade? The only thing that
I've noticed is that narrator now must be started by Control windows enter.

Bob, K8LR, tinn...@charter.net

On 4/13/2017 1:05 PM, Curtis Delzer via Talk wrote:

I had about 3 or 4 major options.
(1) when the last screen came up, of course there is silence and your
computer is waiting for you to press the "next" button from within the
"welcome to windows" screen with your name on the second line.
I had no keyboard, therefore no way to call narrator, and no way to see
the "next" button, and no way to activate it, no how with an absent
keyboard.
(2) I had no sound, since unbeknownst to me, my sounds had been
redirected to my headphones output of my sound card, not speakers which
is the default and (formerly set up) condition.
What to do? Without a mouse connected to my computer, without sight
available at the time, I determined with "be my eyes," that the
condition of "welcome to windows" was happening and my name were on the
screen, and the "next" button, my wife saw with KNFB reader with her
phone.
I had to find a USB mouse, get my neighbor to come in here and press the
"next" button with the mouse, and, of course, we had no keyboard so he
had to use the "virtual" keyboard available in "ease of access center,"
to tap in my PIN which I used at that time to log onto my machine,
because I used my Microsoft account so, in case I had a future machine
identified with my Microsoft account.
My neighbor, then, with very little computer experience, had to find a
way through all of the activity happening, (finishing the update,
downloading fixes to creator edition), and, then, since I was talking
with the Microsoft representative connect my computer to his for fixing.
We found out that on my machine, when the Microsoft account was having
to be logged into, with my pin being requested, I had no keyboard since
the default after the update was with "filter keys" turned on, and
though the Microsoft rep turned them off more than once, they got turned
on again before my PIN was requested every time a re-boot occurred. So,
his solution was to set me up with a local account for now.
The "no keyboard" situation was ugly, imagine a blind person without a
keyboard, and no way to call narrator during the update because of that,
and then, sounds being redirected somewhere else.
I did, while my computer was silent, plug headphones into my computer,
but with no activity, hung on the welcome screen, there is no potential
for sounds to occur, and with no keyboard, how was I to know if my
silent narrator was approaching the "next" key with the mouse. Narrator
did not stay with me after the last boot, and with no way to invoke it I
was hung.
So BE WARE! On your machine all may go swimmingly, but it sure did not
on mine, and I still do not know if I can re-invoke my Microsoft account
with it's PIN used to log into my machine.

Well, I guess I’ve fought it for as long as I can. I’ve refused for
several years to consider switching to a Mac, but with the apparent
demise of Window Eyes, and Jaws sucking as it always has, I’m going to
be making the switch. I’ve been a loyal WE user since 2004, but it
seems that it’s time to teach an old dog new tricks. lol. I can take
my I phone or my I pad mini and have no problem using programs like
Netflix, Slink, and other websites using Voice Over, that WE and Jaws
say hey can’t because the sites aren’t accessible. I think I’ll keep
one of my Windows PC’s with WE on it just so I can look back and think
of all the money I spent just to be left with my thumb up my nose.
When I think of the money I’ve spent maintaining a screen reader, and
now the built in screen reader with the IOS works great with all those
websites that were called by tech support for Jaws and window eyes
“inaccessible”.. I know I may catch some flack for this, but it’s the
truth none the less.I guess VFO thinks they’ve cornered the market on
Screen readers, but I refuse to do business with them, because of who
they are and who they are connected with. I started out with Windows
95 and JFW back in 1995, and I used Jaws up untill 2004 when a friend
of mine and myself started building a web site, he was a WE user and I
a Jaws user. I couldn’t do some of the thing with jaws and Freedom
Scientific’s tech support told me it was because the page builder I
was usin was “inaccessible”, but my buddy with Window eyes could do
it. I started using WE to work on the website and as I got used to it
I began using is more and more for other things. I found that WE
worked “out of the box” with more programs than Jaws did. So, in 2004
I became a Window eyes user. now I’m sad to say that the same type of
thing has happened, except this time is between Window eyes Windows
and Voice Over and Mac. I will be buying my first Mac in a couple of
months and telling WE and Windows goodby.

The future of Window-eyes may be in somewhat doubt but as

Hello Window-Eyes users. Sky here. I wanted to update you guys on
What's

been happening at VFO Group, Particuarly in regards to Zoomtext, and
Window-eyes. In September, 2 editions of FSCast came out regarding
JAWS 18.

One of the features that will be in JAWS 18 will be a talking mouse
support.
The guys at VFO group has said that They have plans to put the talking
mouse
support in Zoomtext, and make JAWS work with it. This made me laugh, as
first of all, Zoomtext already has Window-eyes in it, called Fusion,
secondly, Zoomtext, from my understanding, already has built in mouse
support already with Fusion. No menschen of Window-eyes or even
Fusion. In
the next FSCast, VFO went into more details on JAWS 18 and Zoomtext.
What

is
going to happen is that in Zoomtext 11, JAWS and Zoomtext will be
working
together. I can honestly tell you that they also plan to put in a
talking
mouse support for MAGic, which will be released in 2017. This is not
a good
sign, and besides, Zoomtext and JAWS, would cost a lot more to buy,
than it
would cost to buy Zoomtext Fusion. At no point in the two FSCasts do
they

menschen what's going to happen with Window-eyes.

Rick,

My Windows 10 pro desktop did not get the update, so I downloaded the

I was doing some general reading about how Microsoft pushes out upgrades and

It appears, the article was confusing, that MS may hold off pushing out
upgrades and updates, other than critical ones, for about 4 months after the
initial rollout to folks like home users to ensure there are no glitches and
that any necessary fixes are in place before the pro users get the update or
upgrade.
There are also other schedules they use for Enterprise and some specialized
users.
There is a check box on your computer you can check that would, I think,
defer installing of updates and upgrades for 8 months, not sure how it would
impact home users.
I have the default automagic install of updates and upgrades and have not
changed this setting as I was not sure if it was a good idea at the time.
I forgot to save the url to the article or would put it here for all to read
but can try to find it again if anyone is interested and cant find it.
I wonder if this is what is going on.
I wonder if MS is just waiting 4 months to push the windows 10 anniversery
edition to the Windows Pro users.
They did say that pro users could download updates and upgrades manually but
I don't recall any setting to allow automatic download and install for pro
users as they are rolled out.
This may be why we have not received the new upgrade on our windows pro
machines - fingers crossed they get it right.
As for the Office 365 updates I will look into that via the link you
provided and perhaps upgrade there but because of the problems I see others
having with the 2016 Outlook version I will need to do some homework prior
to getting off into that mire, sigh.
That's all I have this early morning to report as I am really, really busy
trying to repair my investing platform after some changes Yahoo has made to
their website and I have to switch to pulling down data from the NASDAQ now.
Later and thanks for the help.

Hi Rick,

If you type update in the search edit box in the Start menu, Check for
Updates will appear.
If you press Enter on this, you'll be taken to the Windows Update dialog.
If you tab to the Check for updates button and Press it, you'll activate the
manual download of available updates.
Once downloads are available, tabbing to the Install button will actually
install them, and you'll be asked to restart your system when installed.
Now, if you don't manually install updates, this will normally be done
automatically if you leave your system on overnight.
I manually installed updates on my Windows 10 Pro virtual machine twice over
the last week, the last time being today.
Now, even though the Windows Update dialog continues to report that my
Windows is up to date, the current build of my Windows version is still
1511.
I'm starting to be convinced that the anniversary update is either only for
Windows 10 Home, or it will be rolled out to Pro later.
Perhaps Home users are the guinea pigs while the advanced Pro users remain
happy go lucky with their stable 1511 build. Grin

All the best,

Rod

Also, when I want to change a file name, or in other windows explorer

If NVDA and Narrator can always read these edit boxes, Window-Eyes

Hi Paulette

When you are first setting up your echo, you must use a wifi connected

When you start the setup process, you first start entering information

to switch to the WIFI connection coming from your echo to enter the
login information that the echo needs.

Re: Searching from the start menu will now only launch Edge for web results

2016-05-19 Thread Bob Tinney via Talk

Steve,

I just tried searching from the start menu by both typing in to the
search menu and by using voice. Both methods brought up results in
internet explorer which I have set as my default on my Windows 10 pro
machine.

Re: Searching from the start menu will now only launch Edge for web results

2016-05-18 Thread Bob Tinney via Talk

Hi,

I have Internet Explorer set as my default browser in Windows 10 pro and
when I search for a topic, internet explorer comes up with several
answers. One place that always brings up Edge is when I try to use the
Microsoft news app. I can read all of the headlines, but when I click
on one, an edge window comes up and I can not read anything with any of
the screen readers that I currently have.

I contacted the Microsoft accessibility office about this problem and
was told again, and again, and again that "they are aware of the problem
and are working on it".

File name edit boxes not speaking

I am running Window-eyes 9.4 on an HP desktop whose operating system is
Windows 10. The problem I am about to describe is not screen reader
specific, but I am hopeful that some list member may know of a solution.

After this machine has been put into sleep mode, it is difficult to
get it

to come out. I usually press the escape key to wake it up, after which
Eloquence utters several unintelligible syllables. Now comes the tricky
part. I tab slowly and hear things such as "ease of access,"
"shut down," and ultimately "unlock." However, if I tab too rapidly
or too

slowly, the system locks up requiring a hard reset. On at least two and
possibly three occasions, the machine would not reboot; and, since I
had no
speech, I got sighted help and ultimately resorted to a system
restore to an

earlier date.

I vaguely remember seeing a post, possibly on this list, that this
problem
is peculiar to some HP computers. So if there is either a fix or a
reliable

work around, please provide the specifics.

Thanks in advance.

Don Roberts

To the app writers at AISquared, I wrote yesterday to shout my praises
of the new Weather Aloud, and indeed, I do like its new presentation of
the temperature and what it actually feels like with the wind chill, if
you actually can call it that in the middle of spring time. However,
I'm

wondering if there are any plans to restore the readings for humidity
and barometric pressure in an upcoming edition of the app?

OK, I guess I could just tune into my local NOAA station for that kind
of information, but it was nice to have that information at hand as an
option. Who knows, maybe it is there, and I just haven't located it in
the app's settings, although I have looked high and low for them
.

It is really good to have it back, even without these elements.

Keep up the good work,

Larry

Weather or not stopped working before the Windows enhanced app update.
As I said in an earlier post, I think that NOAA has changed something in

Three beeps when I'm booting up my computer

2016-04-20 Thread Bob Tinney via Talk

Chris,

My Windows 10 computer does not beep when I'm shutting it down, but
every once and a while I get three ascending beeps when the computer is

There is one way to stop this from happening but the disadvantages out way the
annoyance of hearing the beeps IMHO.

Go to general/start up/set startup options and uncheck run Window-eyes at the
login screen.
Doing this you will not get the password prompt read, if you don't have a

reboots a couple of times, you will not be aware of this and you may think your

Larry. I am unable to answer your question concerning why Windows 10 users
now hear three descending tones when shutting down their computers. Chris
Grabowski has explained this issue over the phone to me, however, that
doesn't mean I remember his explanation. Chris, a memory refresh would be

Dear listers,

Still a few fun and games I suppose after the W10 upgrade. I am
getting three descending beeps (beep, bop, boot), when I go to shut down my
computer. As I was given to understand when these beeps were ascending, it
might have had something to do with the video card. At that time, I was also
having issues with WE accessing and making use of my apps, and went through
the drastic step of a system restore. Now since I only upgraded last
Saturday afternoon, I don't think that it would benefit me much to do that,
because If I did, I might end up with a pre Windows 10 environment, or would
I?

I suppose that if this is really nothing to be concerned about, especially
if it happens on exit, then I wont, but it is a bit disconcerting to hear
these kind of things just popping up for no known or logical reason.

Any help in solving this little puzzle will be greatly appreciated,

Larry

Larry,

That's how I upgraded the computers around here. I used the media
creation tool which is available from Microsoft. I deleted the file
after upgrading all of the computers, but just search for it on the
Microsoft.com site. I didn't download the Windows 10 installation file
on a flash drive, just put the creation tool file on a flash drive and
let each computer download its own copy of the installation file, it
didn't take that long, only about an hour or so to download the file.

I really don't mind waiting a bit for my download, but I really don't

downloaded anywhere, not even in the temp folder. I've checked the
temp folder by using the run command, and typing temp. I guess that is
the right way to go about it, as well as the proper folder to be
looking for files in the process of being created or in this case,
downloaded. Of course, I keep my eye on the download folder as well.

Who knows, my frustrations may be over nothing. I mean, this may be
normal behavior for the upgrade process, but I just don't understand
why a download process should go so slow, that is if it is going at all.

Anyway, I guess that is enough ranting for one message.

But again Michael, if you could tell me just where to go to find that
tool, or how to look for it, that might be the answer.

Just hope I have a flash drive big enough for the download. I think it

Maybe this has been thoroughly covered in previous discussions, but if
so, it has been missed by me.

I have been in the process of upgrading to Windows 10 since around
7:30pm yesterday evening, and it is now a little after 4am, and I am

I elected to download rather than install, because I thought that
downloading would give me a better chance of scheduling when the
installation and upgrade would take place, hopefully at a time more
convenient for me. Was this indeed the right choice?

I realize that this process can take a day or two to complete
altogether, but not getting any feedback or indication of action is a
bit disconcerting to say the least.

Thanks for any help with all of this in advance. I am just a bit
apprehensive about this upgrade to begin with, but this waiting with no
apparent time table is making me a bit crazy .

Thanks again, and am looking forward to working with W10 when it indeed
actually presents itself for installation.

Re: I have had enough

2016-03-23 Thread Bob Tinney via Talk

Chris,

I agree with you. I haven't had that many Windows 10 updates and they
have never stopped me from doing anything. When you go to shutdown, you
might get a notification asking if you want to update and shutdown or
just shutdown. I always pick the update and shutdown option, and my
Wife always picks the shutdown only option so that I have to catch her
computer up with updates every once and a while.

Please also take care about what Microsoft brings in at update time.

You may well find that it will slip in the upgrade to Windows 10 as an

You could probably stop this, but as Microsoft seem to change its name
occasionally it will only creep back into the optional upgrade list.

should talk you through the entire instal process, both while upgrading,

Windows 7 and easier to use and faster than windows 8 and 8.1.

this will probably point you to IE. But a better way is to find out
where IE

is on your taskbar. If it is the fourth item from the left, for

can type the combination Windows-4 (the 4 is on the number row) and
IE will
start up. Or you can press Windows-T, use the arrow keys to move
right or
left to Internet Explorer, then the context-menu key to open a jump
list for

I E. You can up or down arrow through the jump list and open
frequently used

websites using I E. Same methodology can be used for Firefox, the
Windows

file explorer, or other programs that you pin to the taskbar.
