Re: window eyes

2021-03-19 Thread Loy Green via Talk
I STILL have WE on my Win10 computers as a backup screen reader and it
still works quite well. In a few cases it will work better than JAWS. Being
it has not been updated in 4or 5 years, shows how great a screen reader WE
was.

How is WE performing these days? I would expect it to have issues with
Windows 10. Is this the case? It was a very good screen reader.

Re: JAWS and Eloquence

2021-03-02 Thread Loy Green via Talk
This has not really bothered me. I turned on WE and did notice the
difference. I also tried NVDA with Eloquence and it is like JAWS with no
pauses. Maybe it was WE that changed Eloquence to have the pauses?

Listers,

I know that this is a list devoted to our beloved Window-Eyes, and
die-hards like you and me, so excuse having to bring up the fish.

As it is, I am an occasional user of said screen reader, but for me
there has been a major turnoff since the very first time I
attempted to befriend the thing . It goes as follows. And I
really hope that some of you have dealt with this issue successfully.

It would seem that the folks who write the codes for JAWS have chosen to
muck with their version of the Eloquence synthesizer, and by doing so,
have messed up the pacing of it's delivery.

The problem as I have experienced it is the matter of how Eloquence
manages sentences. Instead of an appropriate pausing between sentences,
JAWS Eloquence takes no pause at all for periods, but continues in a
kind of blue streak affect that doesn't give one even enough
time to digest the sentence as its own entity, you might say.

I definitely prefer WE's pacing when it comes to sentences in
particular. I'm not talking about a pregnant pause between sentences
like you would get if you set it up to make such pauses, but a more
natural pause in the manner of the Window-Eyes presentation.

I hope this is all making sense, but it seems to me that some of you
Eloquence users might know just what I am talking about, and also how to
solve the problem. But who knows, maybe JAWS has simply created through
their own version of Eloquence this issue,
and that their is no solution at all other than a slight rewrite of
their code which I'm sure I would have to move heaven and earth to
convince them to do.

Speaking of code, when I use my Code Factory Eloquence, the sentence
pacing is correct, but they have their speed settings such that it goes
a step either above or below my preferred reading level.
I don't consider myself to be a total slow-poke when it comes to
reading, though I like to set my reading speed at 41 when using
Window-Eyes, a leisurely pace for me, but I am not quite sure of the
exact speed that WE would indicate if they had been using Code Factory
as their default version of Eloquence.

Anyway, if some kind user would please tell me if indeed there is or is
not a solution for this, and for me anyway, major issue, I would really
appreciate hearing from you.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to get serious about learning JAWS, as
my yearly subscription started in September of last year, but WE is
still working reasonably for the apps I most often use, though less and
less so it seems with each new update. But, I'm going to have to decide
if it is worth paying that annual subscription fee to maintain it, or
start focusing on NVDA or Narrator as my screen reader of choice.

A big thanks in advance for any advice you all might have on this issue,

Larry

Rod, thanks so much for the update. I assume that you mean 20.04 when
you use the term the latest version of Windows 10.

I do have a question. I am running Windows 10, a recent version of
1909. Whenever I attempt to run the Window-eyes app for Duxbury, I get
a script error whenever I hit Alt F3 to turn on coded view which
displays the Duxbury codes within the text. If you are familiar with
this app, will it work correctly in 20.04?

Thanks.

Re: A Question Or Two

2020-02-27 Thread Loy Green via Talk
I was a long time user of Window Eyes, WE 9.5.4 will somewhat work with
Win10. But no earlier versions of WE. I got JAWS free when WE was sold. I
started using JAWS then and kept WE and would use it sometimes.WE actually
works best on a few sites even now, but not well on others. There is also a
good free screen reader NVDA. I keep all three screen readers installed but
mostly use JAWS now. Going from 8.4 to 10 should not be hard to learn.
Microsoft disability probably would help you or you can down load the
Windows Upgrade assistant and do it yourself. Original Message -

So I'm still procrastinating. I'm currently using the latest Window--eyes
and the that precedes Windows 10 (maybe it's Windows 8.4?). If I knew for
certain that WE is reasonably compatible with Windows 10 but my concern is
that WE won't work at all. I guess my question is, is it more difficult to
learn Jaws or Windows 10? Should I download Jaws before worrying about
Windows 10? I really don't do much more than surfing and e-mailing, and
the occasional ordering of food and miscellaneous products. Also, is it
possible for the Michrosoft Disabilities desk to install Windows 10 using
remote assist, and if so, would you recommend it?

Interesting. I just had a quick look. Going to

 gwmicro.com

It sure looked like the site is still up. Yet, I did find nowhere to
download anything but some tutorials, and a number of videos. Well, and
then the App Central. Why I still wonder exactly which website the
assumed demo version would have been attempted downloaded from.

If the user still knows the address where the download was attempted,
either retry the download and see if the file comes out with a more
trusty size, or try search the net for another download. Of course,
someone might have a demo sitting around, Does the Office version even
work any longer? Or is all that lane closed, after the cooperation
discontinued? I did not have any demos here, only my purchased versions.

is problem cause by Jaws. I am not sure how to make them aware of the

Anyone has any Idea?
Thanks

P.S.

That is different. "sticky keys", when it says that in windows, when you
press a key more than once fast, is made so that people can type with one
hand. So that if they need to hit, say, control something, they can hit
the

control, and it will stay registered until you hit the key that goes along
with it in order to do a certain function. That doesn't have to do with
keys getting stuck. Mine, though, is an actual key that gets stuck, when
I

least expect it. It's the righthand shift key that gets stuck. Pam.

Even small objects - like tiny screws or the like, that might have

The remedy for all of this behavior, is to press your Alt,Ctrl and

But once in a while, I have had things getting stuck, and no

Apparently, this has been due to some issue more of the software-based

Yet, for several weeks, I suspected WinEyes to play a role. When the

Well, let it be Narrator might eventually turn into something useful.
And forebare with me, I have not tested anything later than Win8.1, so
perhaps it is already getting into something basic. Google managed to
have a somehow working screen reader, and what I hear, so did Apple.
Still, I think very few people will agree, should we claim any of these
even close to the standard of things like Jaws, Win-Eyes, and to a
certain degree NVDA. For one thing, those screen readers that are
included with the OS, lack a good deal of personalization capabilities.
I am not aware you can built any kind of Scripts or add-ons to either of
them.

Besides, dreaming that Microsoft would let all be part of the OS,
without charging their users; seem not too much to rely on, should we
judge from history. OK, they could change their schemes, and very much
welcome to do that. But look what they have done with Office. Sure, you
don't have to pay them a check of a couple of hundred dollars, but
rather they are going to feed at your credit card table every single
month. In about two years, you have subscribe enough that you could have
bought the full-fledged version. And did you buy, you could have camped
with it for the next 5 or 10 years.

My guess is, that you at the best will see MS coming out with a somehow
working Narrator. And then, should you want it to perform anything much
more than just read the screen to you, you will be offered to pay $19.95
a month; or, in case you want the Professional version with some basic
scripting like Jaws - let's charge you $39.95 a month.

I've been using Android for a little now, and have to say it is great to
see the screen reader has improved over the last handful of years.
Still, a simple thing like browsing the net, TalkBack lacks a whole lot.
And, there are a few things that you might want to do on a computer,
which you do not necessarily see fit on your small mobil device. Hence,
whatever good the screen reader might be on your cellphone or tablet,
will you please consider comparing your activity on these units, as well
as your productivity - and then come back telling me these screen
readers are to be compared with WinEyes for one. But if now, Google and
Apple - both being really big industries, and even somehow passed by
Microsoft in market sharing - has never got anything better than this,
why would you expect Microsoft to be. As MS are loosing market, they
doubtfully will put too much into a screen reader. After all, it is not
the screen reader that will sell. On the other hand, as Google and Apple
has climbed the ladder of the market, you would somehow have expected
them to have invested more in their screen readers. What is it you think
MS will be doing different?

Sorry, I did not mean to be critical, or to put anyone down. I just
meant to point out the realities of today. Business is business; and it
is all about money. As the electronic devices have dropped in price,
noone wants to pay 5 times the electronic price, for their software to
be able to run the device. Meaning, the software industry cannot charge
you a shirt, a jacket and five pairs of shoes -just to leave you the
license for turning on your computer. Why we see more and more
subscription-based products. Even now aday, the pricing of the Windows
license soon will be higher than the price of buying just a brand new
computer, with a somehow restricted license on it. Use it for two or
three years, till the poor quality breaks, and then throw it away and go
get yourself a new one. Or, like Office, make people pay you a fortune
over the life-span of the product, by charging them that little each
month, that they do not know you are draining their bank account.

As an interesting side-track here, might I take the opportunity to tell
you all something from locally?

You know, some cellphone operators offer you a mid-range phone, for a
quite reduced price. Only fish-hook of it all, you have to subscribe for
a given service, for the next 24 months or something of that sort. Over
here, the authorities have decided that when they advertise for this
kind of products, they will have to show you the GRAND TOTAL, phone
price and all the months subscription costs summed up. And they have to
do this right there in the advertisement. When you sit down and look at
it, it often turns out the deal is not good at all. You thought you got
a cheap phone, and perhaps you did. But they knew to charge you the
price-reduction and all interests plus a good deal more, through your
*tiny* little monthly subscriptions.

Will be interesting to see what happens to Narrator. Another thing of
course is, that some rumors want

is

the Insert key.
A few keystrokes to note, among the hundreds that are available:
Insert-1: have the keys announce their function instead of perform their
action.
Insert-T: Read title bar.
Insert-B: Read the current active window, like ctrl-shift-W in
Window-Eyes.

Insert-up-arrow: Read current line, like Insert-Center in Window-Eyes.
Insert-down-arrow: Read to end.
Insert-Tab: Get information about how you use the current contorl.
Insert-H: Some help for the currently-running program.
Insert-J: Open the JAWS control panel.
Insert-F4: Unload JAWS.
The numeric pad is not treated differently from the cursor keys and the
six-pack that are to the left of it.
Last spring Raoul Gallegos produced an 8-part podcast series about

Unless you change the modifier key to be CapsLock, the so-called JAWS key
is

the Insert key.

Last spring Raoul Gallegos produced an 8-part podcast series about
transitioning from Window-Eyes to JAWS. Someone else can tell you what the
current URL is. Copy the files to your NLS talking book player and start
interacting with JAWS. It may not all make sense, but eventually you will
be

productive.

Sounds like you know something about Jaws. I am very new at Jaws with a
question. My booklets talk about the Jaws key but don't tell me what it is.
Also, is there a keystroke for reading a document top to bottom? It was
necessary for me to give up my dear window-eyes which was the only screen
reader I ever used. I am using windows 10 and Jaws is 17 plus. Quite a
challenge. Thanks in advance.

Hi Tom. Great points you bought up. However, something has puzzled me. I

  Sky,
What happened with Window-Eyes has nothing to do with who was the front
runner. GW merged with AI and had done an enormous amount of work to
integrate Window-Eyes with ZoomText to make transitioning from the
magnifier to a screen reader easier. Then FS walked in and offered a
pile of cash for the company. Those at the top fought it fiercely. But
the board saw dollar signs and said yes.
So, FS does own the code. They have no interest in it. And it will never
see the light of day. First, their egos won't let them show that
Window-Eyes features could make JAWS a better screen reader. And the way
the two screen readers are built is very different. The JAWS program is
just the critical core elements and it depends heavily on scripts for
every day functionality. Window-Eyes is the opposite; scripts are a
  convenient method to tweak things.
Two Window-Eyes developers are running the show at Microsoft for
Narrator. So I'm hoping one day it will be a great screen reader. If it
gets scripting it will certainly be a game changer.
  Regards,
  Tom

OK, I'm probably not ging to get any good news regarding a solution for

Just yesterday, I decided I would like to add Albuquerque, NM to my list

city, state, and country, or zip code, I get a message saying something
along the lines of "can't fine the city," or something of that nature.
It doesn't matter just what city or zip code I type in, I get the same
  error message.

Is this a permanent issue, or might there be a solution.

  Hopefully,

  Listers,

Could need a bit of info here.

As you know, the latest updates to Thunderbird, have broken the
accessibility when writing new messages, as well as replying to any
message received. Seeing how they slowly broke down any cooperation with
WE in Firefox, I do take the guess, this is just the beginning of the
end for our ability to use Thunderbird along with WinEyes. I do cling to
my WinEyes, among other things, due to the fact that it is the only
screen reader that to a certain extent works with some websites I am
relying on. Like for instance our local grocery store, where neither
NVDA or Jaws will let me do my shopping properly. Only good old WinEyes.

Anyway, I want to have a backup for my mailing activity, the day when
Mozilla finally pulls the plug for WinEyes and Thunderbird. What
alternatives do we have, now adays? I know some of you have mentioned
Becky. Is that the only one? Outlook, OK, but that demands me running
Office - and does it work with all versions of office? Should I decide
to go for things like Becky, will there be a steep learning curve? And
will there be any particular settings or twixings to be done in my
  screen reader?

Any feedback you might have, I am open ears. If you have some idea as to
the functionality with any of the other screen readers, along with a
given mail client, I want to know your experiences. Would be great,
could I find a mail client, which worked with whichever screen reader i
happen to have up running at any time.

  Oh, and two more questions:

Where to get the client you might suggest? And is it for free, Annual
  payment, or Lifetime priced?

  Thanks alot, all of you.

have reported this to ZT support, but they say they have not seen this. They
probably don't test with NVDA. So I'm Having to use JAWS with ZT when I need ZT.

of s mode, but you can't return it to s mode once it's out. As far as JAWS and
the 90 dollar price tag, it beats paying $120.00 but it doesn't beat the cost
of NVDA wich is um, well no cost.
I use both JAWS and NVDA for my job, so I use both of them.
Narrator also works well with he office suite so if you are not going to use

  Good afternoon lists,

There are some really good deals on HSN and QVC for windows 10 laptops as
well as iPads and Fire tablets. I'm trying to decide what to do...

From what I'm finding, Narrator is getting better - does anyone have any
comments/input?

There is an HP Stream laptop with Windows S which requires no virus
protectionAlthough I have a Lenovo Win 10 machine, this deal is very tempting. .

Jaws is going to be a subscription-based program so I will have to pay $90a
year to keep it updated. If Narrator works well, it is included in Windows so I
can use the $90 for other things like maybe Office 360

The HP laptop with Windows S would also eliminate the cost of antivirus
software not to mention the issues with accessibility for the antivirus
programs.

I am also considering just getting an iPad so I have a back-up if something
happens to my phone, but then I'd have to back the iPhone and iPad up to
something so I could move stuff from my phone to the ipad -- I get stressed out
when I have to deal with that. also, iPads seem to only last a few years before
the iPad is no longer ubdateable.

I really don't want to try to learn how to use a Fire tablet, and I doubt the
accessibility is as good as Apple or Microsoft

Just hopeing to get people's thoughts. Really hoping Narrator is working so I
can lose Jaws. I know NVDA is an option, but that is one more thing to learn
and why bother if Narrator has improved enough.

  Thanks for any input,

Subject: alt-tab not speaking after upgrade to 1803

Hi. After upgrading to Windows 10 1803, WE is no longer speaking
alt-tab items. When I do alt-tab and hit tab again I get nothing.

Is anyone else seeing this and any hints as to fixing this problem?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

WE, ZT and IE together a problem

2018-08-29 Thread Loy Green via Talk
Is anyone successfully using the latest version of ZoomText Magnifier and
Window Eyes together on Windows 10 in IE. These two always had worked together
until recently. IE will just not function at all or if it does you can't type
anything into an edit field successfully. When doing so only part of what I am
typing appears or something completely different shows. I am assuming that
there is a conflict between the two at least on my system. In all other
application they still work together as always.

I am glad that Doug Geoffray is now with Microsoft. Window Eyes used more of
the Windows key commands, than does JAWS. As a long time user of Window
Eyes, I have found JAWS much harder to learn. I have looked over the new
key commands that will be coming with the next release of Narrator and they
are more logical and use more standard windows keys commands.Looking
forward to try the new narrator.

  Hi Loy,

  That is not quite right.
It could open, but still be protected.
Is it fully editable with JFW?
You didn't give many details about your experience, and so all I can do is
guess.

Re: Weather or Not

2018-06-29 Thread Loy Green via Talk
That is the version that WE show as the one installed. I would be glad to share
but I don't know where to find the app.

  Hi Loy,

If you have DropBox or some other file sharing service, and can find the
package, would you be willing to share a link to it for me?

  Thanks,

  Rod

Hi Carol,

Yes, I tried it out, and it doesn't yield any weather data for some major
U.S. cities I tried.
I looked into the code of the app and found that it uses Wunderground for
its weather data, and, after going to the site and exploring a bit, it seems
like they don't share weather data freely anymore.
So, perhaps AI Square released an update using another weather service, if
you can find a newer version. Smile

Thanks,

Rod

WE and IE 11

2018-06-27 Thread Loy Green via Talk
I am still using Window Eyes and Windows 10. I have noticed that on some sites
I can't activate a button. Sometimes I can shut down We and then the button
will activate. This also can happen when ZoomText is running. I can't determine
if this is a We and ZT problem or just an IE problem. Maybe I need to change to
FF or chrome. Has other noticed this?

  Hi listers:

Just updated to the Windows 10 update and WE is still functioning normally.

There is one minor thing which I would like to see if any of you can verify.

For some reason, now, when I first start WE, I get the message about
Microsoft Edge and how to switch browsers. Usually, this only happens if I
accidentally try to run Edge. Now, I get it every time I start WE. I am
going to check the "don't show again" box (or what ever it's called) and
this will stop the message--I'm just curious if anyone else has this
  behavior.

  Thanks!

Hi, II 'm not sure about now, but back in 2003 or so there was no
diffference in the pro and home version of jaws other than they charged
more for the authorization. I had a copy of Jaws and decided to do the pro

Hmm, Carol, I paid only one price for Window-Eyes and I did not pay a penny
extra for the pro version. I got a one-size fits all CD, and the upgrades
were the same when I had an SMA! As GW Micro grave got dug, I chose NOT TO
PURCHASE an SMA. At that time, the small frequent updates Window-Eyes used
to get had gone away completely.

Haven't heard this either. I just purchase a SMA for Fusion that supposed to
give me upgrades for two years. A guess you could call a SMA a type of
subscription, to keep the latest version you have to pay for an upgrade every

One thing some people may have forgotten or were not on board with WE
early enough was thay they also charged extra for pro versions of
Window-Eyes. It seems to me that it was at least $100 more than the
standard version because I did not have pro and a friend did. When the
time came that I needed pro, I did have to find the money to do so. The
difference between the two companies is that all upgrades cost the same
for WE and JFW charges more for the pro version upgrades.

I do not know what happened but somehow I lost my membership to the list.
However, I am now subscribed again.
This means I will have probably missed some message and hence the

I realise that sooner or later Window-Eyes will stop working on Windows 10.
I am about to upgrade to what I believe is Windows 10 build 1803.
I wonder if anyone on this list has done this and what their
  experiences have been regarding Window-Eyes?

  Many thanks,

  Subject: version 9.5.4

I hope this request won't cause any list member to get bent out of shape as
it certainly is not intended to offend anyone.

  Yesterday, I contacted V F O to request a link to the Window-eyes version
9.5.4. I did so because my copy is acting flaky, so I wanted to completely
uninstall and subsequently reinstall it. Unfortunately, my CD has been
damaged and is now unplayable. V F O said that they discontinued that
service, so I am now up the creek without a paddle if or until some kind
soul will provide me with a copy of the program along with a serial number.
I know my serial number, but it does me no good because I do not believe
that I could substitute my serial for the one on another user's CD.

So I will say no more but hope that some kind list member will write me off
  list at:

  donald.robert...@gmail.com .

  Thanks for any assistance.

A lot to understand about the JAWS user interface?Indeed. I've been on
computers since the DOS days and have never seen a less user friendly
interface. I couldn't come up with such a menacing mess if I tried. I
don't know how their developers sleep at night.

We have enough to battle with. I didn't in a million years expect such a
  nightmare in a screen-reader.

I wonder who put that opinion forth? We'll just have to see, since I use
window-eyes exclusively with Becky! my email client. I could use NVDA,
but it reads too many lines at the top of message(s) E.G. who from,

I don't think they even do that anymore. Last time I needed help from them,
they made me wait for two hours on hold, then they gave me a person who only
knew jaws, and said he couldn't help me with window eyes, even though I had
said I specifically needed window eyes. And this was something like four

Re: Windows 10 creater upgrade and window eyes 9.5.4

2018-01-13 Thread Loy Green via Talk
After you do an emergency uninstall from the WE CD, you can go to%appdata% and
delete the GWMicro folder. When I updated to the Fall Creator I had WE 9.5.4
and I did not have to uninstall it. I did have to uninstall ZT.

Windows seems to be very fussy about if you have any old versions
around, not installed, but in even a .zip file or in a folder anywhere
on your drive -- see if you can find them and remove them all and try

  Hi,

The book I am reading now is Windows 10 the missing manual. It tells
alot of things. Of course, if you are already a good Windows user, you
have found a lot of these. I am only about four hours into the book and
it is almost 30 hours of reading. It does talk about a lot of things we
as blind people won't use, but it also gives keyboard commands for
things that we would like to use. I believe the author is Vogue, but I
haven't seen it written out yet.

I found this book just by searching for windows 10. I think there was
only this one, but I might be wrong about that. The headings go to four
levels, so you can break things down pretty close to find things. I
haven't looked yet, but there is an extensive appendices, including
  keyboard commands.

Re: We certificates

2017-11-16 Thread Loy Green via Talk
Reading your messages about certificates and authorizations, I am confused
about which version of Window Eyes you are talking about. Sometimes it seems
you are talking about the paid version and sometimes you are talking about the
WE for Office. I don't know much about the WE for Office version.
But for the Paid version there is no limit on the number of installations. And
it is not clear what the certificate problem you mention is. I do know that
around the first of 2017 there was a problem with certificates with AISquared
products and there was an update to fix this problem in January. Could it be
you are trying to install a version that had this certificate problem? Here is
link that discusses this problem.
https://www.aisquared.com/certificatefix/
VFO no longer supports WE Paid version but they should give you a link to
download full copy of your paid version of WE and then you can install without
the problems.

  Hi Larry:

I would just go ahead and reinstall WeForOffice.
In the long run, you save time because you will not have to try
something, have it not work and then try again.

You may have to redownload it from the website. I did that not too
long ago, because I wanted to make sure that the website still exists
and that I have a copy of the istallation file in case the website is
taken down by the folks at VFO.

Re: window eyes instalation disk

2017-10-28 Thread Loy Green via Talk
No it doesn't have to be copied to a CD. just unzip it and open the file and
find the setup file to install it. You can copy all files to a CD if you
wish. I have mine on a thumb drive for save keeping.

It appears the installation copy gw micro sent me needs to be burnt to a
disk. would someone please give me detailed instruction on how to
accomplish this task. I want the installation to begin once I insert the
disk. Thanks.
