Hi Rebecca, And yes, I most often use, and have for years used your method for more sophisticated, and for those not so sophisticated searches. Just wanted to know if I happened to find the search results in Cortana particularly promising on some level if there was some way to freeze it into position so that I could avail myself of the info with more facility, so to speak. If not, no biggie. As usual, thanks, and have a great day, Larry On 10/18/2016 7:22 AM, Rebecca Lineberger wrote: Hi Larry, I use the Cortana search from the Start menu if I want to start a program, Disk cleanup, for example, or want to access a setting, or if I know the exact file I want. I used Ms. Cortana on my Android phone. I even got her to sing a bit! We couldn't go out on a date because she kept being too overtly possessive; I was no longer able to use OK Google. So we parted ways! Since I don't run any incarnation of Windows10 at this time, it will be a while before I can try shaking hands with her again to see if we can mend fences. RE: Cortana
Hi Larry, Using Cortana is equivalent to what you did before when you used to press the Start button in previous versions of Windows and typed in things you wanted to search for; in fact, they now refer to doing searches from the Start menu as invoking Cortana. Also, I suspect that the difficulty you're having in getting her to understand you is you may have your microphone recording level set too high and so you can try turning it down to 60 or so. The keyboard shortcut for invoking Cortanaa, at which point you hear the chime and so you can begin your enquiry, is Windows-C. Re: Disabling Cortana
Hi Debra, Disabling Cortana is easy. Just hit your windows key and in the search box tyep "cortana settings" and hit enter. You can turn cortana on or off and also turn off the always listening mode. I have Cortana running, but I turned off the always listening mode because Cortana had too many false trips. Two Real quick questions about Cortana
Staying with the US American English region, is there any way I can change the Cortana voice from female to a male voice instead? Re: Two Real quick questions about Cortana
I can help you with the first question. You must look for a setting called let cortana respond to hey cortana. To do this the easiest way is: 1: search for cortana settings 2: hit enter 3: tab one time past the option that says manage what cortana knows about me in the cloud. 4: make sure the option i refered to above which is allow cortana to respond to hey cortana is pressed. note: You might want to have cortana learn your voice. You will get a list of 6 phrases you must say to her, don't worry, its pretty easy, and if you mess up she will prompt you to resay it. And they come one at a time so its pretty simple. hth Scott On 8/7/2015 2:45 PM, Christopher-Mark Gilland via Talk wrote: Staying with the US American English region, is there any way I can change the Cortana voice from female to a male voice instead? Hi Kevin, Thanks for your detailed information. I don't have Windows 10 yet, but it is sounding better and better. I like the idea of Siri having a sister. Smile. Paulette -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+paulette=evickery@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Kevin Minor via Talk Sent: Sunday, August 02, 2015 5:10 PM To: 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: RE: I don't have to sign into Windows 10 to use Cortana, thanks Chris. Hi paulette. If you're familiar with Apple devices, Cortana is like Siri. You can ask it different questions, and it will either answer them with its female voice, which sounds quite good, or it will open a web page in your default browser so you can read the information. One thing you can ask Cortana is Tell me a joke. Her humor is right up my alley. You can ask the time, temperature, weather, and many other things. Some of these are just for fun, but some of what Cortana can do is pretty impressive. To activate Cortana in Windows 10, hit the WINDOWS key to activate the start menu, then TAB once to get to the microphone button. Hit SPACE on it, and you should hear a tone from Cortana, indicating you can speak to her. Another tone will sound to indicate the information is being processed, and you will either get an audio answer from her, or a web site will open. If you don't see a microphone button, then it means you have to set up Cortana. I called up Microsoft accessibility to do this, so I don't know what all is needed to be done. Contrary to what the consultant told me at Microsoft, you don't need a logon password to get it to work. You do, however, need a Microsoft account, and if you have an Outlook.com account you're good to go. One thing I almost forgot. You can have Cortana automaticly activate when you say Hey Cortana. I personally don't use this, because anything in the vicinity of the microphone can activate it. That's about all I can think of to mention. Hope this is useful. Have a great day, and don't work too hard. RE: I don't have to sign into Windows 10 to use Cortana, thanks Chris.
Vince. Cortana is a feature in Windows 10 similar to the voice assistant called Seri used on Apple devices such as I-phones. You will need a headset microphone, or if you have a laptop with a built-in hands free microphone, you would be able to use Cortana. As an example, you could ask Cortana what the weather conditions are in your area. Or, as some list members have stated, Cortana can tell jokes. Having said all of this, I am still waiting for my upgrade notification from Microsoft, so I don't yet have Cortana, smile. Cortana is what Siri is but on the Windows platform. Ask a question, she will respond back. You get the idea. Hi all. I want to thank Chris for the instructions to get rid of the Windows password. I now can have Windows 10 boot directly to the desktop. It takes a while to get there, but eventually it does. Cortana works great! Just for your information, and thanks again, Chris. RE: I don't have to sign into Windows 10 to use Cortana, thanks Chris.
A complaint and observation of Cortana.
Hi. First, I'm going to do my subject in the reverse order. I had trouble setting up Cortana, and I had to call Microsoft Accessibility to get it working. I was using JAWS to do this, and it wasn't reading the screen. I decided to check the screen with Window-Eyes, and it read it with no problem. So, at least for me, Window-Eyes does something JAWS doesn't. Now for my complaint. If you use Cortana, you have to have a password to sign into Windows, at least that's what I was told. I'd rather have Windows boot up directly to the desktop. Oh well. Microsoft has its reasons for doing things the way they do. Just some information for you. Re: A complaint and observation of Cortana.
You may be able to resolve the latter issue by: 1. In a run dialogue box or command prompt, type control userpasswords2 and press enter. 2. Uncheck the checkbox that reads, users must enter a username and password and click ok. 3. Type the password for your account and press enter. On 01/08/2015 20:57, Kevin Minor via Talk wrote: Hi. How do you set up Cortana in Windows 10?
Hi. Today I decided to try out Cortana. I wasn't sure what to do, so I did some searches on it. The information I found to set it up was confusing, so I called up Microsoft Accessibility. The person who helped me got it working. You need a Microsoft account to use it. Other than this, is it possible to set up Cortana using WE, and if so how do you do it? Thanks for the information.
