[Talk-transit] Proposed additional tags for bus stops and an import of San Fracisco data
I have been looking at the GTFS data for San Francisco over the past few days and considering how one could do a bus stops/tram stop import for the place and more generally for the GTFS data. However... in the process I want to be be 100% clear which road the stop serves and in which direction to improve the quality of map rendering which is not possible with the current bus stop tagging. Here is the general bus stop positioning problem for bus stops in osm as I see it. The osm community has agreed to place the bus stop beside the road at the place where people wait which is good, however if that stop is close to a junction or to two roads that run parallel then it is not clear which road it serves. This is a problem when it comes to creating clear map rendering where one wants to snap the stop to correct side of the correct road and not left them floating as they are currently. An additional complication comes when one wants to position the symbol correctly when the road widths on the rendering are exaggerated requiring the node to be nudged sideways for it to not appear within the junction itself. I propose that we formalise a couple of NaPTAN tags into the main bus stop schema and try these with a SF import. 'Street' tag: to indicate the name of the associated street 'Bearing' tag: to indicate the direction in which vehicles leave the stop, to be clear this is the immediate direction taken, not a sight- light to the next bus stop. NaPTAN uses compass points N, NE E etc'. Here are some examples of where the addition tags are useful. In the first case it is not clear without the street tag which of two parallel streets are served, and in the second it is not clear which of three nearby streets are served. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/816289382 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/817535874 With these tags we should then be able to do an automatically import. Here are some initial observations on the data. In general the data is good except for a few places where there appear to be duplicates for some stops in similar but not identical locations. This would require a manual clean-up of some busy streets following the import. Stops on either side of the road have the same name. This is not a problem if the bearing field is set correctly from the schedule data - setting the bearing is non-trivial but can be done. The stop naming is 'street street' where the first street name is for the street that the stop serves. This will allow the stops to have the 'street' field set. Sometimes the location of the stop is wrong and places the stop on the other side of the road. This can be sorted manually afterwards given that the bearing field and street fields will show what is actually required. There is a licensing issue for the SF data which is currently only available on a 'limited, and revocable license' which 'does not include any right to sublicense'. http://www.sfmta.com/cms/asite/transitdata.htm Clearly this is not sufficient as it stands and we would need to get approval for what we wanted prior to doing the actual work. Any thoughts on the tagging proposal? Regards, Peter ___ Talk-transit mailing list Talk-transit@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-transit

Good point, but it only helps when the relations exist - and that requires someone to maintain the relations which is a problem and don't always happen. It is still then difficult to decide which road to put the stop against on the rendering and also where exactly to route a person on foot to in order to the bus stop. Personally I don't like the idea of requiring routes in order to establish something physical and this is a solution to that problem. Needless to say this is not a mandatory field! Re: [Talk-transit] Proposed additional tags for bus stops and an import of San Fracisco data
Peter, I think it would be helpful to look at GTFS data from a few diverse providers when testing ideas about imports, as data tends to reflect the historical practices of the particular agency in ways like naming patterns, which details are present, etc. There's a great deal of GTFS data on gtfs-data-exchange.com, but I'd recommend, say, TriMet and Port Authority of Allegheny County in addition to the SFMTA data that you're already examining. As you mentioned, the street and directional information should be optional, as there are boundary cases like stops in shopping centre parking lots, large station complexes, and underground private ways which might make it difficult to provide reasonable street/direction values. By and large I could see how that information would be useful for snapping stop points to varying road network data sets (setting aside the issue of how to deal with stop points on traffic islands in the centre of the road). In general, though, we should be careful not to depend too much on things which are likely to be available from source data in only some parts of the world. (Consider places where not all roads have agreed-upon names.) Thanks for your continued efforts on this issue! Re: [Talk-transit] Proposed additional tags for bus stops and an import of San Fracisco data
You are talking about verifying 10,000 bus stops four times a year. Are you assuming that this would be done through GTFS? Currently in Ottawa there is no way to tie the physical bus stop to GTFS and the GTFS locations are not always accurate. Not all bus stops are included in the file. At one local junction I still haven't worked out which bus stops are included and which ones are not. We do have a stop_id on the bus stop, its just not included in the GTFS file and the other issue we have is licensing. Re: [talk-ph] cebu map errors
Hi, Thanks for the comments about Cebu. If you have noticed names to add or correct, please add them. I try to add road names when I can, but I'm local since 5 years only. I still need to rely on road name signs, and they are quite rare in many parts of Cebu. I also used shop signboards, but its difficult to drive and look out of the passenger window at the same time ^_^ So often I just add the road without name, hoping that others, eventually without GPS, will add them... Regarding the separate ways, I started to add them in Mactan and Mandaue. I come less often in the center/south of Cebu city, so I don't have reliable traces of both lanes. But little by little I correct the double carriage ways there too. Unfortunately there is no satellite imagery available here, so all needs to be traced by GPS. Re: [talk-ph] better ways to coordinate coastline mapping?
Here's a little bit more elaboration on the problem of coastlines in Mapnik. This information can be found at the OSM Wiki: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Coastline Unlike every other feature in the OSM database, coastlines are rendered differently in Mapnik. The Mapnik rendering software needs closed polygons to render areas, and since coastlines are the largest and most basic polygons there is on any map, OSM has to ensure that it feeds Mapnik closed coastlines in order to coherently show seas and islands. For zoom levels 0-9, OSM ignores all coaslines data in OSM and uses the public domain VMAP0 data. For zoom levels higher than 9, OSM uses the Coastline error checker tool http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Coastline_error_checker to generate closed shapefiles that Mapnik can use. This tool is only run infrequently and that is why coastlines do not update often in Mapnik. From my - fairly clear - recollection of the time, there was never any intention of disenfranchising the existing users by overwhelming them with newbies. Rather, we were anxious not to make the problem more difficult than it was then. The more users you have, the more difficult it is to relicense. The idea behind asking new users to dual-licence their contributions was to keep the problem at its then level rather than making it any harder. I repeat, there was never, never any intention to overwhelm the existing contributors. After all, we should really have fixed this four years ago when we had only 2,500 users: [quote from talk list in July 2006] I think we as a community should consider doing the following. Get a privacy policy put together. Get the license right, or go public domain like freethepostcode. The public domain bit is what I meant by 'this would encourage forking'. And when these two things are in place, shut down openstreetmap and mail all the users (we also have no spam policy by the way). In this email it will explain to all 2,500 or so people that we need to get these things in place for the project to continue. It will explain the privacy policy we decide. It could have been dealt with much more swiftly by creating a fork back then when there were only 2,500 contributors. Instead we've had a running sore that is set to continue for some time yet. The ODbL proponents know that a fork would be risky and would probably fail. Instead they tried to effect change from within. This continues to damage OSM. If there's no conclusion by September 1st then I believe that the move to re-license should be considered to have failed. We relicensed the entire Mozilla codebase without forking it. We had 99.8% (or something like that) of people agree. It's unlikely that 99.8% of OSM contributors will agree to ODbL. This is not a comparable situation. Can we all stop speculating about what percentage of people, or data, or objects, or countries are going to support it, and do whatever's necessary so that we can actually _ask_? Then we can figure out what to do. If the number is not 100%, no doubt people will have different opinions. At that point, it may be that OSMF says no, others say yes, and there's a fork. Or it may be that OSMF says yes, other say no, and there's a fork. Or it may be that we all agree yes, or all agree no. And this is the problem with trying to have any kind of fair vote. That is the only practical and effective way for the community to express their will, and the OSMF vote that we are discussing enabled it to take place. Giving the community a ballot vote would first be voted on by the OSMF. Then even if the community did vote to relicence, the voluntary relicencing system would still have to be used because OSMF cannot relicence the project as a whole like Wikimedia did. This means that the project might still not reach critical mass if people didn't choose to relicence. The outcome of the ballot(s) would be rendered void. [OSM-legal-talk] License Cut-over and critical mass
Hi all, I agree with Richard Weait: the community is more important than the data. Although, as Simon Ward said Everyone has a say on whether their contributions can be licensed under the new license., I am uncomfortable with the ODbL process and I resent not being polled before the license change was decided. OSMF has gotten this far in the process without checking they have a clear majority of contributors behind the process (and not just OSMF members). Being told (by Steve Coast in an LWG meeting) that an informal poll on doodle of mapping contributors, conducted AFTER the decision had been taken, legitimates the process is not particularly satisfactory. Polls should be done BEFORE the process becomes irreversible. Not to mention the notes that accompanied the vote were unashamedly pro-ODbL, despite Creative Commons criticizing the ODbL. OSMF really need to learn how to run a poll with the intention listening to the contributor's views, rather than guaging agreement to their agenda (however well intentioned). I am worried about the way ahead. Based on unknown level of contributor support, I don't have much faith in having a real voice in the future of OSM beyond relicensing. Of course, the LWG and OSMF have the best intentions and have gone to great lengths to get feedback but they have something to learn about democracy (if they want to claim they are accountable to the majority). But ultimately, the LWG was formed with certain assumptions (no PD) that were never questioned; it is the process that got us here that makes me worried. The new contributor rights also waters down my effective veto rights to control future licenses. I feel OSMF have overstepping their stewardship bounds to become the gatekeepers. I laugh ironically when it says on the OSMF wiki saying OSMF has no desire to own the data: ODbL effectively does that. They should revert to their supporting role and let the contributors drive change with OSMF as support. Steve Coast did explain his reasons to me for not polling the contributors, I think he was against contributors being pestered about non essential issues (apologies if this is incorrect). I'd say the direction of licensing was an essential issue. Rob Myers's (and LWG's) plan to start relicensing with the unquantified possibility of failure would risk the community without good reason. If we try to rectify the problem at this stage, I'd say we are in serious trouble. 80n has a good point about forking the project. Or conduct an inclusive poll of contributors and then make an informed decision - which will add months to an already tortuous process. Unless OSMF indicate they are open to ideas on the way ahead, it is really a bit pointless to seriously suggesting anything - we are already locked in to the process. I already raised these issues with the LWG but I did not get the feeling they were about to crack - lol! My dream scenario is OSMF polls contributors with unbiased supporting documentation, they abide by the result and then I work a PD fork (different people and areas have different licensing situations). I might even license my previous data to ODbL in a deal to get that up and running. Share alike (ODbL) is just too complex to be workable (Creative Commons agrees with me). Of course, it would not be as comprehensive as an SA-licensed OSM, but it would be more legally predictable. Rant concluded! Share alike You do realise that if you license your work under PD then you can't prevent it from also being relicensed under ODBL? You are however correct about different licensing situations and areas, and I wouldn't agree to any license that wasn't cc-by compatible. I'm torn on the issue of SA (on data only, I'm not worried about images produced from data) since this restricts favourite commercial mapping company from just taking and not giving back, but it also restricts more government involvement at this stage, obviously in future this will change once there is enough data to make licensing issue irrelevant. ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

And within that more than half, the vote was overwhelming. We cannot claim that the silent minority hold views one way or the other. They have not expressed a view. This is how votes work. And this vote was passed. We are now onto the next phase. Given this, the facts are still that a majority voted and a clear majority of the votes were in favour. No, a clear majority would have been 2/3rds in favour, not just those that bothered to vote, this shows there isn't overwhelming support, but a lot of apathy because they don't care how things go or don't understand the implications enough to do anything but fence sitting. The majority of votes cast was more than 3/4 in favour. If we change how votes are measured to include those that didn't actually vote, I would again point out that less than 10% of the total possible voters oppose the change. Those who support the change are less apathetic than those who oppose it. Would I rather more people had voted? Yes. But that doesn't invalidate the outcome. Why doesn't it, there wasn't a clear majority of those eligible. There was a clear majority of those that voted. Votes can only count those that vote. If everyone else doesn't care, that means only that they don't care, not that they are silently for or against. If OSM-F are only stewards, rather than the more active role in things that seems to be occurring, shouldn't it be more fitting to poll active contributors, as other have outlined there is a lot of people People will be able to vote with their data once the voluntary relicencing system is in place. unable or unwilling to be members of OSM-F, but that doesn't mean they don't want a say in how things continue especially if they are putting a lot of time and effort into community building and other PR activities. I can understand that. All I can say is that there are public forums such as this one in which people can make their views known, and that the OSMF Board has always contained a good mix of competent individuals of diverse views who do listen to and participate in those forums. - Rob. ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-t...@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

Also in 3 Hinsichten falsch.
