Imports are contentious in some sectors of the international OSM community. But for the Philippines where we don't have much data to import anyway, the question boils down to whether we prefer no data at all over poor data. GNS in particular seems to be problematic with entities below the municipal level as demonstrated by Ax. I think that we should hold off on importing them for now. Maybe in the future that data will be improved. In the meantime, there are tons of things we can do to improve the existing data. Keep right and OpenStreetBugs provide tons of data problems alone, and there are some residual sawtooth coastlines remaining. I know data maintenance and improvement is not as fun as importing virgin data but my personal opinion is that we should try fixing the existing data first before adding more data that themselves needs fixing too. Do not under any circumstances accept data that is released under CC-BY-SA as this is a dead-end that will require re-negotiation soon. but what happens if they want to update their own data with OSM user contributions? Would the whole updated dataset become share alike as well? Under both the current and the new license, yes, that would make their own data share-alike. What you can do, however, is collect errors in their data on a separate wiki page where you clearly say that the wiki page content is meant to be given to them to improve their data - then mappers who find major bugs can add these to the wiki page and the city council gets a nice list afterwards. Re: [OSM-talk] Update my OSM Tiles after Diff DB Application??
Hi, maw269 wrote: I am creating my own tile server for OSM using Windows Server 2003. I need help on how to make tiles expire and create new tiles after updating my postgres DB with osm diffs. I just answered the following on help.osm.org; if this discussion here yields additional interesting points, feel free to copy them there: First of all, you have to understand that this is not a high performance setup and that you will not be able to keep a current set of tiles for anything larger than a small country with this. With no on-demand tile rendering you will always struggle to keep every single tile current, spending lots of CPU cycles for nothing. You are probably using generate-tiles.py from the OSM Mapnik SVN. There is a function in there that calculates a single tile. With a little bit of Python you should be able to adapt the script to actually read the file generated by osm2pgsql and call the tile compute routine for each tile in that file. I am not aware of a ready-made solution for that in a renderd setup you could use render_expired but you'll have to do it that way. You can request osm2pgsql to output a list of modified tiles for a whole range of zoom levels. Be aware that if you include small zoom levels then the tiles on these zoom levels will be rendered very often; you might want to employ some grep/sort magic and re-render those only once every few days. All in all, the mechanisms involved are complex and PostGIS caching performance is less if you render a flurry of new tiles across a large area compared to systematically rendering all tiles. You might find that with the rather small area you're able to cover with your setup anyway, it might be easier and not even slower to just re-render the whole lot once in a while rather than trying to process updates. Re: [OSM-talk] Update my OSM Tiles after Diff DB Application??
Thanks Frederik, My end goal is to create a World Wide OSM slippy map. So, from you post it seems I may need to step back before I can even proceed to worry about expiring and updating tiles. How would I create a high performance world map that is useable to many users at once? What stack would you recommend? I read about Creating tiles using Mapnik and tilecache from http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Creating_your_own_tiles Would that be a better solution? On Sep 21, 2010 2:32pm, Frederik Ramm frede...@remote.org wrote: Hi, maw269 wrote: I am creating my own tile server for OSM using Windows Server 2003. Its a great way to ensure no-one else ever trusts us with their data if we represent ourselves as 'non-profit' again though. I think it is quite usual for non-profits to license their output very liberally (say, PD, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA), i.e. not reqesting that their output be used non-commercially. We are definitely non-profit and we should represent ourselves as non-profit all the time, but of course you are right in saying that we need to make that clear to people we're dealing with that the work which we do in our non-profit organisation (or non-organisation) is not limited to noncommercial use. No re-negotiation necessary. We have had several such donations in Germany where data was explicitly given to us not under license A or license B but under the terms that this data may be used in OpenStreetMap, whatever their license. Out of interest, has anyone asked these donators what they feel about the licence their data is under, being changed? Maybe they simply did some research at the time, found out what licence OSM is under, and agreed, assuming that there wouldnt be any drastic changes. This method may work well for data sources that are public anyway, but if the data supplier is licencing their data to other places, they need to ensure they dont lose their licenced customers who might choose to use OSM data instead of licencing from them. Actually, sometimes it is easier to convince your counterpart in government to give the data to you than to have them publish it under a license (whatever the license is). The thing is, theyre not 'giving' it to you, theyre giving you the rights/permissions to use it. They still own the data, and the rights to change the licence on it, the same way OSM owns its data and has the right to change the licence on it. Personally, Im not really fussed what the licence of OSM is, as I only have a personal interest in it. What I worry about though is that this long drawn out argument is ripping OSM apart at the seams. We've lost a number of excellent data sources in Australia due to the uncertainty with OSM licences and I worry that a lot of mappers, users and data suppliers will move on if its not resolved soon. Some one else can do the asking and explaining about the flexible licensing we seem to be asking for because I don't want the responsibility of asking for something so open ended. The data I have added from a GPS or my own notes is quite different, I don't really care what license is put on it. Re: [OSM-talk] tag clarification.
There are a lot of different views on tagging and correctness. Some common views I have seen: * What is in the wiki is law. * What renders in (pick your renderer) is law * Try to follow the data that exists * Anything goes The wiki answer to your question (which apply to pitch and which is sport): http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Pitch doesn't list pitch:baseball which I believe supports the leisure:pitch, sport:baseball model. (pitch is actually a value, not a key) If you look at the data (many sources such as OSMDoc and http://www.gamesforlittletimmy.com/TagStats_100811.txt.gz), sport = value is common: Total, nodes, ways, relations 1sport = soccer ( 41975,7748, 34209, 18) 2sport = tennis ( 28917,2962, 25932, 23) 3sport = multi ( 12466,2036, 10407, 23) 4sport = swimming ( 11921,4829,7080, 12) 5sport = baseball ( 8454,1014,7432, 8) And you would be one of the first people to use pitch = baseball. or the uk.rec.cycling newsgroup) you'll find a hard core of committed cyclists who feel that many NCN routes can be inconvenient and badly designed, and would rate them at 4 or 5. And so on. We've had this debate several times beforehand - http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Proposed_features/Cycleworth is one example. You can, of course, create a 'mashup' by using OSM data as a base, and designing a website (or printed map) that superimposes your own subjective rankings on top. That's one way to go. The other (and best) way is to tag the individual factors within OSM which make a good route: surface, traffic levels, incidence of annoying traffic lights, etc. etc. Your routing or rendering setup can then juggle these to get an estimate of what's cycle-friendly according to your own preferred metrics. Traffic levels are hard to tag accurately, but in OSM, we iterate towards accuracy: so you could make an estimate (based on counting traffic in the other direction as you cycle along a road) of, say, 1000 vehicles per hour, and when someone comes up with a better methodology they'll correct it. cc:ed to the international tagging list. cheers Richard -- View this message in context: http://gis.638310.n2.nabble.com/Tags-for-bicycle-friendly-streets-Ride-the-City-Brisbane-tp5528579p5550245.html Sent from the Australia mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 21 Sep 2010 06:45:43 +1000 From: Ben Kelley ben.kel...@gmail.com To: OSM Australian Talk List talk-au@openstreetmap.org Subject: Re: [talk-au] Tags for bicycle friendly streets (Ride the City - Brisbane) Message-ID: aanlktikrgeyyyrcwufsplycqa_maupzi4uitrltv1...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Hi.
Io farei semplicemente una way chiusa che definisco man mano.
