Re: [OSM-talk-be] Zones 30 in Belgium
2012/11/28 A.Pirard.Papou a.pirard.pa...@gmail.com Hi, I made a round up of 50++ OpenStreetBugs Zone30 POIs. Many around Micheroux down to Fléron were already tagged, excellent. They were tagged with maxspeed=30. Whether this maxspeed came from zone30 (F4a) or simply from a round red sign with 30 inside it, cannot be determined. Therefore I prefer to add source:maxspeed=zone30 to those ways as well. Additionally it's interesting to know whether a road is within city limits/built-up area/bebouwde kom/*agglomération* After posting about this on the tagging or general talk mailing lists, it became apparent the difference was denoted with: zone:traffic=BE:urban and zone:traffic=BE:rural. You saw this message, as you reacted to it saying that it was such a great find. But not so up the valley Vesdre, up to Verviers and Near Beaufays. So that nobody examine the same bugs again, I added a comment missing Zone 30 that a hovering mouse shows and I suggest you leave a similar trace too. I'm not sure I understand this. Do you mean there are more zone30 than the ones we know about in Openstreetbugs now? But I remembered how vaguely someone not aware of mapping requests changes. I thought there's a better idea to make them understand what information we need and how to transmit it. It's to write a Web page whose URL would be in the comment or anywhere (I hoped it would be clickable but it is not, but if you select it, nice Firefox will allow clicking). So, I started writing this Help us general page supposed to explhttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/FR:WikiProject_Belgium/Help_usain several things that the general Belgian can do to help our projecthttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/FR:WikiProject_Belgium/Help_us. (In French because these POIs are for the people of Wallonia to read). What do you think? Should I continue this page? Would you help? Can we put its URL in the OSB comments? I'm reluctant to change all these Openstreetbugs once more (except to indicate they are solved). They are mostly there to get an overview of where works needs to be done on the Openstreetmap data. I think it's sufficient you refer to them from your web page. It's improbable enough somebody is going to stumble on a bug by accident and not knowing what to do with it. On 2012-11-26 11:32, Jo wrote : The category in OSMOSE is simply called Openstreetbugs. OK. It was filtered out :-( tick the checkbox in front of it... But those OSMOSE alerts are useless because they don't show the comments. untick it once more. the easiest way to work with OSB is to add the plugin to JOSM, so you can go back and forth between layers within one application. I went to have a look at some of the bugs you solved and I think it's important to add why there is a speed limit of 30 or 50. As I write above, I did not tag any bug. I just marked those that were already tagged. But they were not tagged with complete information. If we are going to solve bugs, it seems better to me to do it properly right away. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/193218277 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/55822233 There's no rush. If the limit comes from a zoneXX or built-up area. There are other traffic rules that are affected by this as well. Where is the Belgian Web page where those who have added those tags should have read how the Belgian OSM community has decided to tag areas and speed limits in Belgium? Somebody still needs to write it. In particular, what is the definition of the built-up area you speak of? *2.12. ... Also I think BE needs to be all caps. 'be' stands for the language Byelorussian to me (I probably spen. When I look at taginfo I notice that DE etc. is also all caps. Both ISO 3166 (country) and ISO 639 (language) specify case-insensitive codes. Lowercase is usually used. Context must always distinguish countries and languages. As well as Shakespeare's 2 be or not 2 BE :-) Although you could, you do not type talk-BE nor taxonweb.BE (1). You may have noticed that most of the DNS names are written in lowercase. Unix uses lowercase and uppercase is a Windows' habit being laughed at ;-) country language Belgium be fr, nl, de Белоруссия by ru, be It's more of a convention I got used to while working on Wiktionary/Wikipedia. When I look at taginfo I see DE and FI are used, which makes sense to me. If you insist to use be:urban, I'll have to change my style sheet to do regex matches. I'd prefer to keep things simple though, so it works on older hardware as well. I created a mapcss file that works well together with the maxspeed.mapcss. It adds an extra white border to streets within built-up area and a black one outside. An extra brown border is added to streets that

Why not prefix the name with the word Municipality, so that people know that the two names are municipality names and not a different type of border? If it's meant for mappers, put it in note. Better yet have the software derive it, but the problem with that this can become complex and expensive and the Potlatch devs don't seem to give a rat's ass. If you want to plot municipalities as borders and not as a tagged node within anonymous borders, remove the nodes and create a closed way (or relation) for *each* municipality. These will overlap where municipalities or other types of regions border each other, but now the software can choose which border type it's interested in and easily grab the right name. Use relations and it'll be trivial to find where borders overlap, and this would accurately represent coinciding borders. I actually kind of like that idea. Why not prefix the name with the word Municipality, so that people know that the two names are municipality names and not a different type of border? I have presented this to tagging@osm, and I think I mentioned it on talk-be@osm: The municipality (L8=level 8) border segments (ways between two municipalities) should be assembled with multilinestring to form arrondissement L7 border segments. Then, the border of the arrondissement are now a much smaller number of L7 segments. We may do the same at higher levels. The L8 borders are tagged admin_level=8, name=municipalityA — municipalityB The L7 borders are tagged admin_level=7, name=arrondissementA — arrondissementB The L6 borders are tagged admin_level=6, name=provinceA — provinceB and so on for upper levels or lower levels if they exist. And then the meaningless saying the highest admin_level wins goes away by itself, especially when applied to names for which there is no reason to apply that rule. THAT is consistent, coherent, compatible, congruous, harmonious, homogeneous, logical, solid, sound, straightforward, uniform, you name it. But... no answer that proposition. Do you want me to apply that configuration on the borderline Liège — Verviers? I have a test demo OSM update ready for that. We will be able to evaluate the consequences. I know one: JOSM does not support multilinestring and recursion. So, the configuration it makes is correct but continuity and loop test it makes will no longer exist for higher levels. That's, a pity, but the most important test is the bottom-level one. For he upper levels with only a few boundaries, good attention will suffice. And the very simple program I wrote is quite capable of going down the tree and check for continuity and loop. Any news about JOSM supporting recursion, e.g. as hiking routes use them? We could otherwise not use multilinestring and use overlapping real ways but I find that ugly !!! Shall I apply that test configuration? Re: [OSM-legal-talk] Combining Creative Commons Licensed Data with ODbL and Redistributing
We've been using CC BY licensed data in OSM. The only potential issue is that they be satisfied that the attribution is reasonable to the medium or means You are utilizing. I would consider that a line saying Hazard Data (C) CC BY foo, Map Data (C) ODbL OpenStreetMap contributors with appropriate hyperlinks would be considered reasonable to an online map and they couldn't object. If that's too long then perhaps (C) foo, OpenStreetMap with a more detailed legal page. The issue that comes up with OSM and CC BY is that our attribution is a listing in http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Contributors and for major sources on a national scale listing on http://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright. Someone could potentially not consider this means of attribution sufficient. My recollection about effective technological measures is that the language is DMCA related. It doesn't stop technical measures, it just stops them from being effective and triggering some of the DMCA provisions. GPLv3 has similar language stating that no covered work shall be deemed part of an effective technological measure ... under ... WIPO copyright treaty, or similar laws... I think the net effect is that you can break the copy protection on a CC BY licensed work and doing that by itself is not against the law. Of course what you do with the work after you've broken the copyright protection could be, but the mere breaking of copy protection is okay. IANAL, etc From: Kate Chapman [mailto:k...@maploser.com] with ODbL and Redistributing So the hazard database is a scientific model, I don't think it would be considered a fact database. I believe there is some flexibility on asking the owner to pick a license, but the intent is they want an attribution only license. If I understand things correctly the produced work (a printed map) could be licensed CC-BY no problem however. I'm just not sure what we do about the derived database. To go to online maps you seem to have to: 1) Menu | Settings | Offline data (Download) 2) Expand Offline maps (vector) 3) Hold down on each offline map until 'deactivate' appears, which you choose. 4) Back out to Settings, select Online maps 5) Select Online and tile maps To then choose which one actually shows: 6) Menu | Define view | Map source... 7) Pick one Hmm...written out it doesn't sound that bad, but it took quite a lot of fumbling around to get that far. (I guess the problem is the OsmAnd authors think of vector and tile maps as completely different functions, implemented completely differently, but for the user, they're just two variations on a theme.) What we* need is: Must have: 1) It has to be simple to use. There are lots of powerful apps like OSMand, Locus etc, but they're incredibly complex, with lots of features we don't need. 2) Should by default use bicycle rendering (OpenCycleMap or other), or be very easy to change to that. 3) We'll need a recommendation for both iPhone and Android. Nice to have: 4) Easy-to-use offline tile downloading/use would be a bonus. (Personally I find it pretty complex switching between offline vector rendering and online tiles in the apps I mentioned before). 5) Features like food/drink near here would be a bonus. 6) Ability to also choose Google Maps would be a bonus. 7) Ability to route along bike paths (ie, rail trails) would be nice. Once we've chosen an app, we're going to have to give instructions like download the app, push this button to change to cycle mode, push this button to download tiles etc, so the simpler the better. Re: [talk-au] Historical rail lines
Actually, the slope is slippery. People have made it about old roads. There are people who have mapped old roads where they have been completely developed over and no trace remains. Mapping the traces of an old rail line isn't historical mapping. If there are currently traces there then it's mapping the present. But I know that it was previously a quarry, and then a rubbish tip/landfill, cos there is a sign saying so. But I certainly wouldn't tag the parks as a quarry or landfill, because it isn't. It's a park IMHO this slope is not slippery. Every time the do we map historical stuff debate comes up, it's always about train lines. That is, we're still at the top of this supposedly slippery slope, waiting to slide down. Somehow, train lines are different. They just are. To reiterate what I said before in different words: we're not mapping the 1890 route of a long forgotten train line. We're mapping the vestigial traces of a former line. And I'm absolutely not proposing to record any information about when lines opened or closed, or were re-routed or whatever. Re: [Talk-in] Rate Roads
Well Onkar Thank you so much for this input i really had no idea about it :) or may be i had but i wanted something different. If you see the parameters you can rate the road for in pathajalp.com;they are six viz.Quality,Safety,Cleanliness,Expected Traffic density,Driving Pleasure,Aesthetics. So, the main aim is to allow General Public to Rate the road based on what they Feel about that particular road and use this info to help others. What you have suggested is actually much more brilliant and can definitely be done and it becomes part of the Quality factor of the road. But as i ve already said i wanted to create something thats more By the people for the people and a little simple for users. In case of using the osm tags it would be much easier but trust me there is not enough general Road data as its still in a 'nascent' stage (atleast in this part of maharashtra),and so it should be even more difficult to find the Tagged data, i suppose :) Dear Ishan , thank you for checking out the site :) and if this kinda data if it will be useful for OSM data i would surely like to give it back to OSM ,I will look into how is it Technically Possible. And i had actually wanted those ratings to be visible at lower zoom levels but you see it didnt look pretty nice.. :( plus on some browsers it showedsome problems but yes i am looking into what can be done. By the way you can also use it on android and IOs phones. the link is m.pathajalp.com. Thank you folks.. and i am looking for more input from you people as i ve no previous experiance of developing a web application. Re: [Talk-in] Rate Roads
Hi, I feel a single index, the speed index (not speed limit), contains most of the information required for navigation. This can be got quite reliably from averaging GPS trackplots, as long as we differentiate for different classes of vehicles (cars, buses) etc. I know the gold standard is to trace from (properly othorectified) images, but the GPS trackplot does have its uses. Re: [Talk-it] ODBL e derivare dati da OSM
A conferma ed ulteriore dettaglio di quanto dici tu ma con un aspetto interessante sulla viralità lo possiamo trovare nello scenario discusso in [1]: 1) Create a produced work under ODbL term 4.3 with proper attribution 2) Release produced work as public domain with proper attribution 3) Strip off legal notices and attribution (which I think is allowed, almost by definition, for public domain works) 4) Republish as public domain or any other license, without attribution This is allowed. ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Hej.

[OSM-talk-fr] Fwd: [Maps-l] Wikimedia/mapping event in Europe early next year?
Plus d'infos dans le message original joint ci-dessous -- Forwarded message -- From: Erik Moeller e...@wikimedia.org Date: 2012/11/28 Subject: [Maps-l] Wikimedia/mapping event in Europe early next year? To: map...@lists.wikimedia.org Hi folks, it's been a long time coming, but we're finally gearing up for putting some development effort into an OSM tileservice running in production to serve Wikimedia sites. This is being driven by the mobile team but obviously has lots of non-mobile use cases as well, including the recent Wikivoyage addition to the Wikimedia familiy. This work will probably not kick off before January/February 2013; before then, the mobile team is working to finish up the GeoData extension ( https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Geodata ). To get broader community involvement and sync up with existing volunteer efforts in this area, it'd IMO be useful to plan a face-to-face meetup/hackfest just focused on geodata/mapping related development work sometime around Feb/March 2013. WMF is not going to organize this, but we can help sponsor travel and bring the key developers from our side who will work on this. Are there any takers for supporting a 20-30 people development event in Europe focused on mapping/geodata? I'm suggesting Europe because I know quite a few of the relevant folks are there, but am open to other options as well.

___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr
