[OSM-talk-be] Bingify Belgium

2010-12-23 Thread Paul Cardinaels
Hello all,

I'm busy to bingify Belgium, my main focus for the time being are my two
home towns:

Hoogstraten (and let's not forget Eimai's big contribution):
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.4474&lon=4.7686&zoom=12&layers=M

Neerpelt:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.2272&lon=5.4549&zoom=13&layers=M

I was wondering how many people are doing this kind of work, and throwing in
*the idea to set some common goals*, to make the work more enjoyable and
less mind-numbing.

Looking forward to your replies,
Paul Cardinaels

I am always interested in railways and have started again on the
railways in Belgium. Some are way off according to the Bing maps. I
know Bing is not always on the mark, but I've seen bigger errors than 10
meters.

And sometimes when I'm at it I also trace some roads. Yesterday I did
some work in Bertrix.

Maarten

Didn't have to much time.
I did the park Rivierenhof (many wrong roads, non-existing, way off).
Most is done now.

Re: [OSM-talk-be] Bingify Belgium

2010-12-23 Thread Kenny Moens

Hi guys,

I'm personally working on this, mainly my hometown area of Hulshout and
the surrounding towns.

My focus is (in order):
1) roads (missing + aligning)
2) rivers / railway (missing + aligning)
3) landuse
4) city borders

On some parts (roads), sometimes I wonder about the actual road surface
(paved/unpaved) and this typically triggers me to go and visit the road
to see its condition. But this is rather hard with this weather :D

Also some parts to watch out for, which I already experienced: don't try
to blindly trust bing data, the data isn't perfectly current. For
example in my town of Houtvenne there is a new street (at least 1 year
old), which is not visible on Bing yet, but which I mapped earlier on by
means of GPX tracks.

Kind regards,

Kenny Moens

Focusing mainly on areas I've mapped before, and some nearby blank spots
as well:

Zelzate: http://osm.org/go/0EjbIC9i-
I mapped the entire town a long time ago, but have tweaked the roads here
and there, especially in the dense center, where higher buildings
sometimes took my track off the straight. Also done buildings there,
west/south. The buildings in the northeast are from 3dShapes.

Assenede: http://osm.org/go/0EjZZfm
Same as Zelzate. I mapped most of the eastern part of that area a long
time ago, but began to fill in the western part, which was pretty devoid
of roads in OSM. Also tweaked the residential landuse to the actual
position instead of the very low res Yahoo tracing I did.

Ertvelde/Rieme: http://osm.org/go/0EjYy2Wy-
Rieme was entirely missing, and Ertvelde only had some through roads.
Filled in the entire grid, and drew the residential landuse. Now I have to
go in and collect the road names! :) Also, some landuse to the north of
there.

Spoorlijn 55/55A: no link, but goes from Gent to Terneuzen.
A few weeks ago, OSM still had the old track, running over where the
Kluizendok now is. I traced the entire (new) stretch from Gent to
Terneuzen, including all spurs and sidings. This was helped immensely due
to the higher resolution Bing photo's available along the Kanaal van Gent
naar Terneuzen. In those spots, I could even count the railroad ties!

My goals when bingifying, in general order: roads, residential landuse,
tracks/paths, other major landuse, minor landuse.

Got a question with respect to the landuse.
I see different ways of connecting different neighbouring land-uses.
Is it recommended to reuse the same points, or as I did, just draw the

I had the same question. Checked the wiki, and it seems everyone has
that question and there is no real answer.

I'm reusing nodes. This means it is a bit harder to edit (although it is
perfectly supported and possible by JOSM), but it gives a much cleaner
result on the map.

 for
me it's a priority before adding buildings and addresses :)

but what's greate in osm is that everyone does what he care about :)

Re: [OSM-talk-be] Bingify Belgium

2010-12-23 Thread Ben Laenen
I'm doing a few "bingifications":

landuse:
* did part of Hoogstraten http://osm.org/go/0Esm6kMc--
* filled the 3dshapes gap at Poppel http://osm.org/go/0EuGY2x1--
* just went south to Loenhout, Sint-Lenaarts to Oostmalle. The original idea
was creating some sort of a grid, but not sure if I'm going to pursue that
thought. But basically I'm just randomly following the interesting direction
:-) http://osm.org/go/0EsiMU2--

other:
* also worked on the coasts and ports of Zeebrugge, Ostend, Blankenberge, and
worked on the Kusttram (experimentally mapping it with one way = one rail
track, so you get two lines) which includes improving the N34
http://osm.org/go/0Ekgho1q
* railways near Zeebrugge (also one track = one way)
* and I've been several improving regional roads (gewestwegen)
* also added the odd power line

I take 3dshapes as example, which means reusing the common nodes.

Done that too, it is fun to search for the next tower to continue the power
line.

I also draw rivers (some parts of Meuse, Sambre and Vesdre so far), and use
it to add many details to places I know (mainly in Namur and Liege).

My personal rule is, if the landuse are really connected (there is nothing
between them, or only a barrier) I reuse the same nodes. If there is a
highway, or a track between them I trace the three of them separated.
I never connect a landuse to a highway, to do so would require to draw the
highway as an area to connect the correct edge to the landuse. I think that
a highway drawn as a single line is supposed to correspond to the center of
the road/way.

Re: [OSM-talk-be] Bingify Belgium

2010-12-23 Thread Jo
I'm working around Bekkevoort, Bierbeek and Leuven. I was almost considering
to buy a balloon or a kite, or make a ride on a balloon to make my own
aerial imagery. Some features are next to impossible to map by surveying.
(forests, rivers, lakes, buildings, landuse). So I'm really grateful with
Bing's decision to let us use their imagery.

I noticed that around Leuven/Diest all the imagery is 3 years old. Of course
some things have changed in the mean time, but mostly it's very useable and
certainly better than nothing at all.

I try to make landuses as big as possible and I do connect it to the
highways. It gives the best result when exporting to PDF and printing them,
especially at high zoom levels. When working on a region I first trace the
smaller features like buildings, orchards, forests, then
residential/commercial landuse, then farmland. in between.

The quality of the map is increasing tremendously, hopefully the database
won't get overloaded...

Re: [OSM-talk-be] Bingify Belgium

2010-12-23 Thread Gerard Vanderveken

Hi all,

I'm mostly adding new paths and tracks around Huldenberg with JOSM,
using Bing (and previously Yahoo) to correct ways and adding landmark
buildings in connection of the new material.

I'm working around Bekkevoort, Bierbeek and Leuven. I was almost
considering to buy a balloon or a kite, or make a ride on a balloon to
make my own aerial imagery. Some features are next to impossible to
map by surveying. (forests, rivers, lakes, buildings, landuse). So I'm
really grateful with Bing's decision to let us use their imagery.

I noticed that around Leuven/Diest all the imagery is 3 years old. Of
course some things have changed in the mean time, but mostly it's very
useable and certainly better than nothing at all.

I try to make landuses as big as possible and I do connect it to the
highways. It gives the best result when exporting to PDF and printing
them, especially at high zoom levels. When working on a region I first
trace the smaller features like buildings, orchards, forests, then
residential/commercial landuse, then farmland. in between.

The quality of the map is increasing tremendously, hopefully the
database won't get overloaded...

Jo
