Probably not even a form is needed - just print all the debug info to

As Johannes mailed me OffList too I decided to answer OffList and stop
this thread.

There's only one thing left: with a 'Man in the MIDDLE' neither the
line nor the data will be secure. A 'MITM' is not located at server
side but 'in the Middle' so if he's good enough neither me nor the
server will recognize there's a third party. If he's to dumb we will
and therefore stop talking.

So a MITM-situation is an unsecure one. Without any doubt. Without
restrictions on what is unsecure, it's everything that has made it's
way through the line until MITM is recognized.

I'd like to continue further dicussions on TBTECH, TBOT or even
OffList, not only for not being banned by Marck *g* but foremost
because this discussion ain't a Beta issue any more, it's more a
technical one :-)

63 fonts installed, 512 mebibyte of RAM, 336 free at the moment and a

"Inbox - Known" does not fell into "pre defined"?
If located as a sub folder of 'Inbox' and named literally "$KNOWN$"

So Peter is right, the line is not "secure" as the MITM can get hold
of the data submitted over the line.

It is quite another question if he can *read* it, or even make sense

The *line* is un-secure, the *data* is secure (if the encryption algorithm

Okay, that last statement is not entirely accurate... Just a few minutes
ago, I tried the RTV again just to see (on an HTML message), and it was very
fast, no apparent delay! I had a whole bunch of other apps open (MSVC++,
Dreamweaver, my own app under development, text editor...) at the time. I
was excited, thinking the problem had been solved (I just dl'ed Beta/30),
and rebooted my machine to check. After reboot, it was back to being as slow
as ever, and still is slow now, even after I've opened all the same apps
again.

This says two things to me: 1) it's not an inherent problem with the system
just being too slow, since it was perfectly fast there for a few minutes,
and 2) that it seems it's actually faster when a lot of system resources are
being consumed. (I think I remember someone on this list mentioning the same
thing a while back...) But it's hard for me to reproduce the change in
delay, so I can't be precise about the conditions.

Macro expansion in MAss mailing template unreliable?

2002-01-17 Thread Graham Foster

Hello The Bat! developers,

  I'm using The Bat! Version 1.54 Beta/29
  Serial Number F0060E1D
under Windows NT 4.0 Build 1381 Service Pack 6
and would like to report a bug

  The bug description:
The % macros are not reliably expanded when using the Mass mailing
template.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:
  - Create an address book subgroup
  - Populate entries with e-mail address, and fax number (it was just
somewhere to hold information from a database search)
  - run the following QT
> %SUBJECT="XLFit license survey"
> Hi
> The computer identified as %abtofax was logged onto by you since Xmas,
> and the computer had a copy of XLFit on it. Please can you reply and
> confirm if you actually use XLFit on %abtofax.
.. etc
When this message was sent out (to 60 recipients) many of them
reported that the %abtofax field was occasionally blank. They forwarded their
messages to me and I can confirm that 1 or more of the %abtofax
replacements were omitted. Some people received the whole thing, other
the last one was missing, some had all of the references missing.

Mmmh - not a great performance? Is it a bug or is it usererror?
Example duff message
> Hi
> The computer identified as TP0041745 was logged onto by you since Xmas,
> and the computer had a copy of XLFit on it. Please can you reply and
> confirm if you actually use XLFit on
Note the last substitution is missing,
> Hi
> The computer identified as was logged onto by you since Xmas,
> and the computer had a copy of XLFit on it. Please can you reply and
> confirm if you actually use XLFit on .
Note BOTH substitutions are missing :-)

Just a small suggestion to the moderators:

Maybe this could be added to the mailing list footer. Because there is
no place where someone who missed Stef's first announcement could get
that information from.

I'd even take it one step further and distribute new betas only via the
the BugTraq site, with only an announcement of the changes to the list,
and the URL could be accessible from the first page after the login.

What do you think?

Gosh, that is a deviously placed button! Thanks :)

As you already have set up a test account, would you test this:

- do not send two messages with same attachment, but only one.
- _Copy_ this one message after receiving from "Test_FA_1" to
  "Test_FA_2".
- have a look what attachments are in attachment directory, from
Markus description I'd guess: one: ADDRESSES.DOC
- have another look into .tbb-files and I assume you'll find someting
  like "C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Mail\Test_FA\Attach\ADRESSES.DOC" in
  both of them.
- delete one message of this two, referring to the same attachment
- if Markus is right the attachment will disappear (may after purging
  Trash folder)

This is the reason why 'hard links' or 'index counts' would have to be
introduced when continuing the possibility of storing attachments in a
separate directory.

I try it but couldn't agree with you:
here is how I test it:
1) create an account 'test_FA' with attachments stored in special directory
2) create 2 sub-folders in Inbox
   - Test_FA_1
   - Test_FA_2
3) add 2 filters to dispatch messages in sub-folders
4) sent 2 messages with the same file attached: ADRESSES.DOC
5) verify:
5.1) diff attachment ?
found 2 identical files in the Test_FA\attach directory:
 - ADRESSES.DOC
 - ADRESSES1.DOC
   in Test_FA\Inbox\Test_FA_1\Messages.tbb I found:
,- [ ]
| X-Content-File: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Mail\Test_FA\Attach\ADRESSES1.DOC
| Content-Type: application/msword; name="ADRESSES.DOC"
| Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

| Content-Type: application/msword; name="ADRESSES.DOC"
| Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
| Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="ADRESSES.DOC"
'-
5.2) del attachment:
I delete the message in Test_FA_1 and remove it from Trash, the only
file that was remove from the attachment directory was ADRESSES1.DOC

Bug with deleting messages from thread

2002-01-17 Thread Dierk Haasis

Hello TBBETA Members!

  "I think I've got it ..."

I hope everyone remembers the problem: I couldn't delete some
messages with just one hit of ; that just moved me to the next
  message in the thread.

Now, with beta 29 the default for threading was like the official
version, I just set it back to "Oldest message first" and - boom -
got into "trouble" again. I tried to delete a message which at that
moment was the first in a thread, it only got me to the next one. I
had to go back and delete it again.

I hope I am right, can anyone confirm, so RITLabs can squash that
  bastard?

If you want to set the font for the message list, go to:

Message | Colour Group | Edit Colour Groups | Font

Yeah, it is rather hidden and suggests it is associated with the
various colours which it isn't, but it works fine for me to change the
font of the message list.

Hi,

How do you know that? Are you going to add a sticker to the Bat! package
saying: May cause file loss if you try to organize attachments separately.
Do not use with big attachments!

Every 1st of a month I get a mail with a 8 MB attachment. I store this in
two separate folders. In one folder messages are deleted after five days.
The other folder keeps messages indefinitely. Every six months or so I
delete the attachments from the Attachments directory. I need to keep the
messages as a proof of having received them. To my surprise attachments
were already gone the time a copy of the message had been removed from my
short-term folder.

> or keep attachments separately and live with limitations this way gives.

'Limitations' is hardly the right word. It works when my POP server feeds
me dupes and I un-dupe folders. This works because every message gets its
own internal ID, even if it is a dupe. Why not create a new ID when a
message gets copied and have references between attachments and messages?

How does it currently work? How does the Bat 'know' which attachment
belongs to which message? Obviously some logic is already in place since
separate attachments with the same name get unique file names.

Regards,

Markus
