This came up in the past... several times if I remember correctly. I
think Val9 or Stefan said it was for testing purposes on something,
but I'd have to look over my archives. I also think they had a lot of
beta testers complaining about permissions on that file (ie users
cannot create it), and they said they'd remove it... but again, from
memory, would have to go back over my archives.

Hey, what a perfect time to test searching in the alpha ;)

IMAP and Mail Fetching Quirks

2005-02-22 Thread Jonathan Angliss
Hi,

Okay, I'm kind of liking this new look, there are some odd quirks,
like the envelope icons in the message list half appearing randomly,
but I'm sure they'll get sorted (along with the other things).

This email is concerning IMAP and message fetching quirks. It'd appear
randomly TB wants to "hang" on fetching emails. I have sat here for an
hour with 2 emails (yes only 2 emails) sitting in the queue to be
processed with the "Status" of "In Queue". It can sit there for ages.
If I click on other messages, they get added to the queue, and nothing
happens. If I then delete one of those messages that was in the queue,
it'd seem like TB suddenly wakes up, and then processes a few of the
messages you had in the queue, then goes back to sleeping away. If I
then delete /all/ the tasks, then give it a few minutes, /then/ try
getting a new message, everything is back to normal again.

Mildly annoying, I wasn't expecting a degredation of IMAP handling, I
was hoping for an improvement. Though I guess it is an improvement
over beta 10 where I couldn't use it at all as it'd close the IMAP
connection, and never work again.

Another quarky IMAP issue. My autofiltering is triggered sporadically
at best. When I see the messages move automatically without selecting
the folder, it's an occasion for me. :)

I'm surprised that as an IMAP user, you're able to get along with that
beta. My server connections last mere seconds with that beta that
implements multiple server connections support. The same exists for
this alpha.

I'm not playing with ThunderBird now. I'm *using* ThunderBird and

IMAP and filtering quarks

2005-02-22 Thread Matt Thoene
Hi.

Using 3.0.2.10.

I have filtering set up on two different IMAP accounts. On both IMAP
accounts, I have a main Inbox with several sub-folders that I have set
up to filter messages to automatically. Both filter, but one does not
until I physically highlight the Inbox. The other filters just fine
without my intervention. Both of the accounts have from what I can
tell identical settings.

Is this a simple switch I'm missing or just another quarky TB IMAP
issue?

Thanks.

Poco's a nice little email program. I recommend it to those that don't
need the power of TB! but want to get away from Outlook Express.

As you can see from mail headers, I'm playing with Thunderbird. (The
IMAP beats TB!'s hands down and the GnuPG support via Enigmail is better
than the PGP support in TB! as well).

Yes. See above.

That being said, I don't mind Ritlabs releasing an Alpha to the general
public (although it as per BS standards would be a Beta :-) ) as long as
it is clearly marked as such. People (including myself) have anxiously
been waiting for news from Ritlabs and I suppose that they have released

Personally, I'll wait for the Beta. And then I will wait to hear if IMAP
is better than the one I am using now. Any version after 3.0.1.33 breaks

IMHO, this level of Alpha version should never go public, not even to this
list. By releasing a program in this embryonic state, there is a chance that it
will disappoint a lot of people.

Only after a program has been thoroughly tested by the developers and a very

Hi Matt,
The original quoted text below was written on 22/02/2005 21:37 my local

I would guess that many have not installed it yet and are awaiting
the "single file available as soon as the Alpha stage is finished"
version...
I'm one of those. I've 55 unread messages relating to the new Alpha as
I've not had chance to read them, but from what I've heard, IMAP is
lacking somewhat. As I am entirely IMAP based, I'm in no great hurry to
test in this case.

I wish I could get my TB! to look as yours by renaming a file... I've
tried deleting all registry settings and running the alpha from a new

I've just accused (nicely) a friend of replying to the wrong message.
Two weeks ago a message was sent with exactly the same subject as one
sent yesterday but the reply came to the message sent two weeks ago. I
thought it was their fault but it's not and, going back to 3.10, the
messages (I got a reply) are appended to the correct later mail and not
the first one.

Rather you should file a bug report and suggest that TB!'s threading
mechanism should be better. Of course TB! cannot know exactly where to
thread a message lacking the threading headers, but it would be a
advocated guess that it should first look messages written in the last
days/weeks before looking for messages one year old.

Turned out that my contact had been using a thing called 'Internet

NA> Ok, but is it new?

Radically and drastically, while looking similar.

NA> Do we have a configurable Toolbar or anything similar to that?

We have completely configurable toolbars and menus. Being a deep
alpha, they barely function and are very difficult to handle. Much of
the original functionality of the UI is compromised, but I can see
where it's going.

NA> Newer looking icons...

Completely soft, so the question is immaterial.

NA> or is it the very same desktop as previous betas?

The "desktop" (basic layout) is unchanged, but it is clear that the
components that give the look and feel of the elements, menus and
toolbars are completely different.

This is very much work in progress and tales of woe are numerous. It
is very much at the level I would have feared when a developer is
forced into showing his hand too early by user pressure. (okay - cheap

Can't confirm, the add button works fine over here.
What bothers me is that Escape doesn't work anymore. After adding a
new action, pressing escape would undo that. Now my sorting office
doesn't react at all on the escape button.

Talking to myself isn't unusual, set up a filter to copy what you send to the

colours messages from me to a different colour.

 smime in Account Properties Options.

Bah, that was a selfforfilling prophecy! So it is your fault. ;-) The
Shortcut (to /home/steffelchen/.cxoffice/.../ doesn't work (I'll try
to translate the error massages into english, but I'm not sure if it's
correct!), it says: "The child-process cannot be started". The
"child-process" is not specified.

The same with copy to /home/steffelchen/.wine/.../ .

When I try to install TB! with COO by pointing to the copied
thebat.exe, it installs, asks the "first-start-questions" and then
freezes with a black window with "unregistered test copy". *sigh* I'm
just some kind of motivated beginner with Linux, so it's difficult to
find the solution, even Google exists. :-) Using wine I found really
hard. First I had to install it - this part was ok :-) - but when I
got *something* to run which looks like wine, it tells me, that it's
not configured and tells me to configure a file which doesn't exist.
If you had some "Linux - first aid for dummies", let me know!
Thanks for your help so far!

HAND
Steff

And this IS a BETA list,(says so in the address). Truth is I was being fair,
they ask for input, I'm giving it. It's hard to rave about something that is so
 deeply flawed.

Surely all these bugs we're finding must have been the same for the developers.
The basic fundamental things like icons and spell checker, missing menus and
blank menu items and yet they still released it to us. They've put their self
in the firing line by releasing such a flawed version even if it is an Alpha.

Sorry but the word "Wow" just doesn't spring to mind at the moment.

Re: Antispam Bayes Filter Plugin 2.0.2 (Open Source)

I can confirm this problem:

I did a clean install of bayes filter plugin 2.0.2 in a custom
directory and it doesn't reload after a restart of TB! (also tried
installing to the default-directoy, no effect), nor does it show up in
TBPlugin.ini.

Bayesit however loads perfectly.

I even have deleted the tbplugin.ini file, bayesit continues to load
after a restart of TB!.

It can't be a permission-problem on the TBPlugin.ini-file since it is
on a fat32-partition (it's also not read-only).

Further, I did some testing with the 'mygaterunner'-plugin and it too
loads fine without the 'TBPlugin.ini' -file (or with an empty one).

IMHO the 'TBPlugin.ini' file isn't used anymore, but I don't know what
does account for the loading of plugins.

Anybody got an idea?

I was expressing my disappointment rather than complaining. It was such an
anticlimax after such a long wait that's all.

With all the hype and "When is" posts flying about I was anticipating greatness,
as I think most people were. A bit like asking for a Rasberry Ripple ice cream
and getting plain vanilla.

ALT+L don't work either by the way.

Deep alpha Edit message box

2005-02-22 Thread Richard Wakeford
Hello,

Lots wrong with "Edit Mail Message" box.

Alignment icons work but none of the bottom ones do (and corresponding
menu items don't either).

Spell checker menu dead.

Options Message format only works if you scroll through. You can't pick
one choice. What's worse it's easy to get to "HTML only" (never use it
myself) and virtually impossible to get back to Micro-Ed! In fact, if
you play around with it too much it goes in a huff and freezes and then
dumps your message in the outbox. Could be embarassing if you were on an
automatic blink at the time!

Whilst composing a message The Bat! message screen behind flashes every
ten seconds or so as though it's trying to do something.

Why are there two alignment menus, one under "Format/Alignment" and the
other next door under "Utilities/Format block"?

Trying the "Privacy" menu solicits nothing either but then that's
probably because I've stopped using PGP but it doesn't even tell me I
don't have it installed.

On trying to re edit a message you can't resave as draft. You have to
use the close button where it will ask the usual "save message" and then
the message is saved as "parked" in the outbox.

a few seconds later. Now it's saving to the outbox using the toolbar
button.

Not just lots of non working functions but also full of inconsistencies.
errors don't seem to be consistent. Faults occur in different ways at
different times.

That's weird because I like my latest messages at the bottom but it
wanted to put them at the top so I've had to change everything - only
the once though and it remembers all those settings now.
