[The Bat! 3.80.03] Bug: URL cut off in Editor/Message Viewer

2006-05-03 Thread Volker Ahrendt
Hello, folks!

If I insert a URL, which contains a special character (e.g. German
Umlaut), into a new eMail, the URL is cut off.

Example: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Völlerei

Only http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/V is formatted as a link and will be
opened in a browser.

It seems to be regardless, which editor/viewer you use
(Options|Preferences...|Viewer/Editor).

Any confirmations?

Tuesday, May 2, 2006

Maybe its related - when I try to send a PDF using FreePDF (which is
using MAPI) I get an error from FreePDF (see attachment).

I see the same with Adobe Reader, opening a file with it and sending it
via e-mail in its own menu causes the same blank mail body as with
Winrar. I have no doubt that it is TB who messes up with some part of
code.

TB is registered as the standard MAPI handler on my system. At work,
using Outlook, this works as expected.

Same here, at work I have to use Lotus Notes which wasn't fully
administrated in my case when I used this feature there: Lotus Notes
started up but didn't come very far -no mail form would show up, only
the program started. So my admins had a little work on this, too. It was
more than just a few clicks, it took about 45 minutes to rearrange the
whole thing. Actually all was done remotely without my presence, thanks
to the network. Now it works nicely.
I wish the same could be done with TB. So I will set up a bug report?

absolutely correct, as (S)MAPI-submitted content does have not only an attachment, but headers and body as well. thus, the mail client is expected to obey that content and don't mess up with it. this is exactly what TB does.

well-behaved (S)MAPI-invoking apps (like pdfFactory at least) do have settings where the user can specify how a generated message should look.

in your case, WinRAR doesn't seem to fall in this "well-behaved app" category.

should we make means that will allow betatesters to dump this content to a file and send it to us, so we can figure out how to handle each app in part?

Firefox does provide an option on how to display them. but that's easier, as you can be pretty sure that if what is typed in that box is an URI, the *entire* string is an URI. while TB's job is to RECOGNIZE AND DELIMIT a URI in a stream of bytes that usually represents just a story the user is supposed to get bothered with.

I am sorry to be of no help here, the whole procedure took 45 minutes
and was obviously a lot of work and took place on my screen on the one
hand and with some supplemental manual work from my admin on the other.
The latter I couldn't watch, since there are some file types my
restricted account on the network isn't allowed to see. I saw the Lotus
Notes program folder open, some files were opened with editor and
modified with cp inserting from -at least to my eyes- invisible
sources. There must have been a lot more.
I phoned later with the helpdesk and asked what happened and I was told
the main thing was that my previous settings from the time I had a NDD
were falsely copied and didn't work well together with my new PC I got
in November last year. And some parts of Lotus Notes were renewed by a
Net-install job which were adapted later.

Re: 3.80.03 MAPI and WinRAR

2006-05-03 Thread Charlene Ferrara
Hi vitalie vrabie,

Wednesday, May 3, 2006
you let us know -possibly edited- :

well-behaved (S)MAPI-invoking apps (like pdfFactory at least) do have
settings where the user can specify how a generated message should look.

PDFcreator doesn't well behave there, too. :(

in your case, WinRAR doesn't seem to fall in this well-behaved app category.

And Adobe Reader 7 not to forget.

should we make means that will allow betatesters to dump this content
to a file and send it to us, so we can figure out how to handle each app in
 part?

I will try to improve the overall performance and will join with WinRar,
Adobe Reader 7 and PDFcreator 09.x

On Alexander's place all went well with another Email app. I think those
clever apps should send their information as attachments, too. If I
decide to send a specific rar-ed file to my friends I expect the
addressbook templates to kick in. Some apps set up a subject line and
fill some text in a form, that should not be a problem.

make sure your MSI engine is up-to-date,

Re[2]: [The Bat! 3.80.03] Bug: URL cut off in Editor/Message Viewer

2006-05-03 Thread Vili
Hello vitalie,

yes, but when you enter the whole URL in Firefox, it will displyed as
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%B6llerei. IE displays the URL with
the composite character. So TB is not the only application with a bug
 in this environment.
Firefox does provide an option on how to display them. but that's
easier, as you can be pretty sure that if what is typed in that box
is an URI, the *entire* string is an URI. while TB's job is to
RECOGNIZE AND DELIMIT a URI in a stream of bytes that usually
represents just a story the user is supposed to get bothered with.

The important question here is: are there rules what character an URL
can contain and what not? IMHO, the first whitespace should signal the
end of an URL...

Actually, we've discussed this thing before (or something like that),
when Jürgen Haug mentioned that when he used Opera's function to send an
URL as email, the template system kicked in as soon as he filled in the
recipient - clearing the message, and the URL that was put into it by
Opera (or some of that programming majic).

Maybe TB should have some simple logic to handle that, a configurable
handling of msg content supplied externally by MAPI, either override
it with the template system, or leave it as is... I don't know how this
riddle could be solved.

Yes, as long as you are younger than 25, have manifying glasses or run

Larger fonts will be the future (for everyone) without doubt. I hope
that screen resolutions will increase A LOT in the future (something
like 2400x1800 on a 19 desktop TFT for example), it would allow much
more realistic font rendering and better overall readability for
everyone.

The problem currently are the really small icons of some applications in
higher resolutions. Windows XP already provides larger icons, and TBs
default toolbar icons are good, too, but obviously, the large font
handling needs improvement.

hi,

Wednesday, May 3, 2006

Mmm, odd ... I can't find a msg with that ID in my TBBETA collection.
 What was the subject?
FWIW: finding the physical size of a folder -but as Vitalie said, it
maybe another message...
