OK ... it has been quiet here for a while. I didn't think much

I just got an email announcing 4.0.18 is available for download.

So has the beta program died or is something else going on?

It was me not 'getting' your point, I think.

Mostly because I haven't see a difference. Maybe I have just been
lucky, but I never had something that didn't render correctly when I
'opened' the html version ... so I never really looked closely enough
to see if the graphics were local or linked in from a site.

MP> If you receive a message in which "inline" and "remote" graphics (or text)
MP> are combined, you won't be able to see the "total" correct message in TB!.

H ... is that in the preview or when you actually open it? As I
said above, I have not run into one that didn't render correctly when
I clicked on the HTML attachment and I really don't worry too much
about what it looks like in the preview ... as long as I can tell who
it is from and what is likely in it.

MP> It's not often that one receives such a message, but it happens, and those

MP> Some people seem to specialise in such a "style"...

Right ... we all know what we want And in the hopes that tptb at
Rit are listening ... fwiw, I have been accused of being a polyanna
... I have tried to voice my preferences and the reasons
behind them. That does not mean that someone else's view isn't just
as valid. Of course I =hope= that they will end up with things that I
like, but when they don't I will evaluate and continue with the
current version or move to the new one ... depending on my
evaluations.

I just didn't want folks to think that I was trying to say that their
pet feature was wrong of should not be considered just because I don't
happen to think it helps make TB better ... or something like that

Well ... I have no idea what the sender =intended= it look like
I can only say that I (normally) don't see anything that looks
"wrong". Occasionally there will be a problem with the net and
something won't come down, but that would be a problem no matter what
you were using to display

MP> What if, f.i., you wanted to make a pdf of such a message?

Never came up ... but I would have the same problem if I wanted to
save any 'web page' as a pdf. I suppose I would just open up Open
Office, paste the doc in there and save it

And I should point out that saving in PDF format is not typically
something one thinks of as an integral part of an HTML editor ... at
least it isn't a feature that I worry about. If I am working with
HTML, I want a web page out of it not a PDF. I would use a publisher
type package for that.

Maybe I am just too much of a dinosaur from decades of using Unix and
Linux I like software to be really good at one thing and not
bloated up, slowed down and obscured with a ton of features that more
properly belongs in some other program.

I would rather that TB =not= get bogged down with all the bloat (and
the cost in terms of development hours) needed to implement a fully
functional HTML editor ... especially when there are plenty of them
available already.

When I have to include HTML, I use the HTML editor I already own, have
installed and already **know how to use efficiently** to develop the
content, then cut & paste that into TB.

OK ... I have stated my case and will stop now

You can have either 'action' with either system. A single "in box"

the opposite with IE (and just about any other client that has filters
)

Right. I am distressed at the tendency of programs to keep growing
and expanding into 'swiss army programs'. While, in a pinch, it might
be nice to have a single emergency tool that will do everything, the
never have been able to make one that does everything as well as the
specific tools. I want a mail client that is the best mail client
possible. I don't want to compromize that so that it can get messages
from a news reader ... I already have a great newsreader that does a
great job of working with news groups ... which is different than
getting email in many small ways that makes a combined tool less than
optimum in both instances.

And as soon as you say "Pocket PC", you need to include "Palm" in the

I agree that it =might= be nice for folks when they are 'on the move'
with a laptop. Mostly I have not had need of it, however, and so
would not give it a high priority.

But that is just me. My needs are fairly simple and that is what I
want, something simple and focused that does the best possible job
possible on the one task I need it to do, work with my email. It is
damned close to that now for me. So as long as we don't mess with

At that time, however, Opera did not work well with many sites. There
are still a lot of sites where Opera does not render correctly. That
is what has kept Opera as an 'also ran', unfortunate as that might be.

I still (possibly because of familiarity) prefer TB over the
alternatives. OE is still 'brain dead', Thunderbird is not as useful
to me (I use that on a company box since I can't have personal email
there). I am still confident that eventually TB will catch up with
MSN and their new authentication 'scheme'

The thing about FF was that it offered improvements over IE in the
areas of functionality, but more importantly, security. That made it
very attractive to the geek community. They picked up in it early.
When they went to help out their tech-challenged friends who had
gotten 'clobbered' by some 'problem' in IE, they would tell them to
use this here program. Then the tech journals picked up on it ... and
then the main stream press got wind ... etc.

I don't know that the same tactic will work here. For one thing, there
are a lot of mail clients out there. When FF came out there were just
a couple out there. Look at all the mail clients and some of them are
quite functional. The other problem is that the 'benefits' are not as
'clear' in this situation. For example, I cannot use TB for MSN now
that MS has changed the authentication (yet again ).

I'll certainly be using that as I try to zero in on the specific steps
needed to cause the problem.

But I should point out that I never had any 'memory' or 'AV' issues
with any of the '.99' builds before this one. And even if this is a
non-TB 'system problem' with my system with running out of resources

I am getting something like that ... but only on folders with a large
number of messages (happens with one with just over 200 messages, but
not on one with just over 50 ... don't have anything in between at the

I first get an "out of memory" message. On the folder with ~200
messages it can show the list of messages, but not show the selected
message in the preview. On a folder with over 3000 I do not even get
the message list. Anything I do after that ... move the message

Unfortunately that only happened the first time I ran TB after the
install. After I shut it down and restarted it, the behavior has been
normal. I wonder if it could just have been a problem with 'debris'
from the install? Or perhaps the 'folder clean-up' at close fixed the
problem Can't tell now since it seems to be working fine now

Well I noticed that when I first start up, TB uses little mem between
15 and 20 meg. Once I have gotten mail the first time it goes up a bit
to between 30 and 35 meg. But it stays there pretty much from then on.
Of course I have not had it running for more than a few hours so far
But I have done several gets and a few sends as well and while it
might go up a few meg *during* the get, it drops back down to that
30-35 meg range as soon as the connection is done.

FWIW, TB, even at the 30-35 size, is still using less mem than FF with
one tab/window open or MS word, so I don't find that number out of
hand or anything (although if it was smaller that would certainly be
better )

Hello all,

Here is a bit more detail on the memory problem. Based on how I
see the memory disappearing, it seems to be more problematical at
message download. It *seems* as if it is allocating mem for each

message is written onto the HD.

Hope that helps.

Well to be honest, I was not having a 'repeatable' enough problem to
tell easily. For the last couple of updates I have been able to start
and stop with out problems. It was only after running for some amount
of time that I would have an AV when I closed. The longer / more work
I did the more likely it would be. I only had one crash on 3.96.07.

So far so good with this one too

I used BayesIt for a long time. On the plus side, BayesIt was the only
filter I used that never gave me a false positive, something that I
weigh pretty highly. But, as someone else mentioned, it takes a lot
of mail to train it (I used to keep a couple thousand spam and ham
messages around for those time when I had to retrain it ) My other
complaint was that it tended to 'get lost' as to what was spam over
time and I would have to dump the training base and re-train (hence
the large training sample )

It worked ... OK for me, but I have moved on to Agava's anti-spam for
TB. TB is more stable with it installed and it learns pretty quickly.
But it is not free. But it is pretty affordable, less than $20 when I
last looked.

window and select properties. I think that is where you can tell it
where to put it's data files. You should be able to delete the extra
slash there. Then you want to be sure that the directory exists and
see if you can find the default files that need to be there ... I
don't remember if there is one or two that has to be there, but it
will recreate the dictionary and such if they do not exist. But it
will not create a directory.

Sorry, that is all I remember.

There are at least three. BayesIt is, I think available at Rit labs.
There is Bayes Filter that some like better than BayesIt. I believe
that both of those are free. I am currently using AGAVA anti spam. It
is not free but works better than either of the free ones and at only
$12 for the Bat plugin, is pretty near free

Strangeness w/ replies using 2 accounts

2006-02-10 Thread MikeD (2)
Hello tbbeta,

I originally thought that this was something new, but checking find
it goes back at least to 3.70.03 (the earliest version I still had
around) and perhaps earlier. I didn't notice it until today when I
went looking for one of my sent mails.

I have two accounts, 'miked(1)' and 'miked(2)' Most of the generic
stuff uses miked(2) but miked(1) is the first one in the account
  list.

What I noticed is that when I reply to a message that is in one of
the respective "inbox" folders, everything works as expected. The
message copy shows up in the appropriate "Sent" box.

However I noticed a "problem" when I reply to a message that has
been 'filtered' to a "top" level folder. Most of the folders have
been set to use the miked(2) email address, and that is the address
that is in the messages when I reply. However, when I send them,
they seem to be going through the miked(1) account even though they
have the miked(2) address. At least I find the copy in the "Sent"
folder for the miked(1) account instead of the expected miked(2)
  "Sent" folder.

Is this a known behavior? Is it a bug or is it a
limitation/feature? It is certainly not a show stopper, but it does
  seem strange to me.

  TIA

I do not have many customizations either, just a few key assignments,

been an earlier update.

2005-12-12 Thread MikeD (2)
Hello tbbeta,

I just managed to get around to installing the .09 version and
noticed this strangeness when I send a message (reply or new mail).

I get the 'pop-up' message asking to save a copy of the message when
I click send. This is the same dialog I see when I click to close a
message without sending it. The message *is* sent ... and in fact will
finish sending without waiting for me to select a response in the
  dialog box.

1.) if this is already reported, sorry. I didn't see it in a quick
  review by subject.

2.) is anyone else seeing this? If so, is this an expected
behavior (i.e. a feature)? If so, can it be disabled?

Re: Cannot send from mail created from email link.

2005-11-28 Thread MikeD (2)
Hello TBBETA,

If I click on an embedded 'mail to' link in a message I get strange
behavior. First I do not get the 'from' address filled in as I would
if I clicked to reply to the message that has the link or if I started
a new message from that folder. Secondly the "send the message" and
"Put message in outbox" icons are swapped in the upper left of the
message window.

Then I select a from address and composed the message as normal. No
problems there. But when I click either the send or save buttons,
nothing happens. I do get the appropriate "pop-up" confirmation button
box, but the message is not sent or put in the outbox. I cannot do
anything with the message except to cancel it.

I took a quick look and did not see any other messages that *seemed*
to be addressing this issue, but I did not read everything so I
apologize if I missed this problem from someone else.

This has just started happening within the last few updates. I am not
sure of the exact time, but I know it worked correctly early in the
3.62 series.

Have you tried adjusting your 'threshold'? I have been using BayesIt
and have not had that problem. I almost never have false positives.
But between 20 and 30% of the spam doesn't get filtered. Just adjust
the threshold up a bit each time you get a false positive and that
should solve the problem ... but you will end up letting more spam
through. But for me, it is less of a problem to deal with the little
bit of spam tht gets trhough than it is to have to deal with a proxy
like K9. But others feel that K9 (or other proxy) is worth the
hassel. YMMV

Re[4]: The Bat! 3.61.04 BETA

2005-09-14 Thread MikeD (2)
Hello Maxim,

OK ... I still have the 'weirdnesss' in the folder list window and I
think I have it nailed down as to how to 'trigger' it now.

expand enough folders so that your list exceeds one window and the
scroll bars appear. Scroll down the list so that the top of the list
is off the screen. Now collapse enough folders so that the list is no
longer bigger than one window, but leave the top of the list off the
top of the window. At this point you still have the scroll bar along
the right side of the folder window. Click anywhere on the scroll bar
and it will vanish and the top of the folder list will still be off
the top of the window (Often it will scroll most of the list off the
top of the window). You now have to use keyboard commands to get the
top of the list back down into the window.

I am curious to know if anyone else is able to duplicate this ... or
is it just me?

3.61.03 nits still around

2005-09-07 Thread MikeD (2)
Hello tbbeta,

The folder list scroll bar still misbehaves occasionally,
disappearing even while much of the folder list is up off the top of
the window. FWIW, it has never done this while the folder list was
scrolled off the bottom of the window. But I don't know if that is
just because I have not done ... well what ever it is that triggers
this or it does not happen in that situation. More if I discover
  it.

Next, there is still a problem with formatting ... re-wrapping lines
in particular ... when I select to reply to an HTML message and then
use the Options/Message Format to select plain text - micro ed.
However if I delete the HTML from the source message and then reply,
it works fine. Most of the times this is not a problem, but some
times I want to keep the HTML message intact yet send a plain text
  reply.

Finally ... when scrolling between windows there is a problem. This
is probably related to a similar problem from an earlier version.
If no message is loaded, then everything works as expected. Tab
will cycle between the folder list and message list (and find window
if that is open), no surprises. However, if a message is displayed
in the preview window, there is an extra stop for the tab cycle. It
*seems* to be the header for the previewed message. The "lost" tab
stop is not visible. It is after the message preview window and
before the folder list window. There is no indication where the
focus is, **BUT** if I use the arrow keys while this "lost" window

Well I spoke too soon on that one That little nit is still
there too, sorry.

Just to refresh ...

If, in the folder window, I expand folder trees until they exceed the
length of the window, the scroll bar is displayed (as expected). If I
move the mouse over the scroll bar and click on the "raised" portion
that represents the visible part of the window on the scroll bar, then
... some times ... the scroll bar vanishes while most of the folder
tree is up beyond the top of the window.

I have not figured out exactly what triggers this yet. I hope to have
more details after it happens a few more times.

Select all and delet bug is back

2005-09-02 Thread MikeD (2)
Hello tbbeta,

Well two steps forward and one step back

It looks like the folder window scroll bar weirdness has been
addressed, but an old bugaboo is back, thanks for that one

Go to a message list window, hit Crtl-A to select all messages
without having a message selected (the preview window shows "no
message selected"). All messages are "highlighted" but delete does
not delete the selected messages. As soon as any message is
selected, Ctrl-A / Del will work fine.

3.60.06 mostly good news

2005-08-31 Thread MikeD (2)
Hello tbbeta,

All my previous little nits have been picked as far as I can tell.
The only thing that I have noticed is a tendency for the scroll bar
on the folder window to 'disappear' occasionally.

Now this is not the same as the scroll bar going away when all the
folders fit in the window. This happens when I have enough folders
'exploded' to bring the scroll bar into play. I am not sure exactly
what I am doing to cause this, but it seems to be when I am
scrolling the window up. I will end up with Most of the folders up
off the top of the window, but the scroll bar is hidden. The only
way to get the list back in the window is to highlight a visible
folder and then use the arrow keys to move the highlight back up the
list. The whole list will eventually scroll back into the visible
  part of the window.

Clearly I needed to give you more info. The black or white lists are
there for you to enter sites you want. My white list would not be of
much use to you, for example

G>>> Got already enough SPAM, but the learning process
G>>> didn't start.

You only have to train it once to get it started. Otherwise it doesn't
know what is good and what is bad. After that, only the messages that
are misclasified have to be explicitly processed that way. Also, when
you mark something as spam, it is moved to the spam folder, so you
don't have do do that extra step.

From what I hear from other users here, there are anti-spam programs
that work better than Beysit. I just don't want the added headaches
and overhead from running a proxy server process which is how the
programs like K9, SpamCop, etc. work.

But while it may not be perfect, Beyesit works well enough for me.

I would bet not. I would suggest that you re-train it using current

Nt really (yet )

G> Are there blacklists available?

Black and white lists are now available for it.

G> Got already enough SPAM, but the learning process
G> didn't start.

You have to explicitly select messages and tell it what they are using
the Specials/'mark as junk' and 'mark as not junk' functions to tell
it how to treat the selected messages. It will use that data to
process incoming mail. If it "guesses" incorrectly with incoming, you
then use the same two options to "correct" it.

HTH, let me know if you have further questions.

3.60.03 Micro-Ed problem after Message Format change

2005-08-26 Thread MikeD (2)
Hello tbbeta,

I have not seen this mentioned ... but I have just been skimming the
messages since I am a bit busy at the moment ... so if this is a
  duplication, sorry.

I noticed that if I replay to an HTML message, it now defaults to
opening an HTML reply. I am sure I can turn that off, that is not
the problem ... just an observation.

The problem occurs when I then go to "Option" menu and select "Plain
text Micro-Ed" from the Format list in the reply window.

The message changes to plain text with all the correct quoting and
such ... and it *seems* to be the Micro-Ed (not windows) editor as I
would expect. But some functions don't work. The most blatant (and
the one I have tested the most) is Alt-L to re-wrap lines which does
not function. It seems to do nothing.

On the other hand, using the same original message, if I delete the
HTML portion of the message *before* I start the replay, it opens
the plain text Micro-Ed and Alt-L (and everything else as far as I
can tell) works just as I would expect.

Yup, same here (so far, so good).

FWIW, my actual memory usage is down about 10% with this one verses
3.60 ... but I have just fired it up. I'll see how that is after I
have run it for a day or so.
