Re: How to bold text in a template file?

2008-05-16 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Dear Andrew,

@16-May-2008, 08:32 +0200 (16-May 07:32 here) Andrew Aronoff [AA] in
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to Marck:

>> plain text messages have no way to convey bold text by convention.

AA> Why not use plain text formatted *like this*?

Yes, but his template called for the bolding of filenames. It needs
more than implication and convention. I this myself *all* the time
/and/ it can get _very_ annoying to my friends and family ;-).

Dear Brian,

mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said:

BA> I tried using html < b > < /b > before and after %SubPatt='2' but that
BA> didn't work and showed the tags in the message. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Well, it's not possible yet. The support for HTML templates is not yet
in TB and plain text messages have no way to convey bold text by
convention. So - you're onto a bit of a loser there for now.

2008-05-15 Thread Marck D Pearlstone

Yes - mine is.

BA> Particularly the Sent folder or Trash folder?

Well - all and any really.

BA> Would this interfere with any sending email?

No.

Whooosh ... there goes the tumbleweed. You're kinda in the wrong place
here. These are not highly technical questions and you'd get *loads*
of answers on the mainstream TBUDL list.

Re: How do I make an email address a "No Reply"

2008-05-15 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Dear Brian,

@15-May-2008, 09:39 -0700 (15-May 17:39 here) Brian Archer [BA] in
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said:

BA> I aksed this question in the forum and got this reply:

BA> "you set the From header to whatever you like and it would be best to leave
BA> the Reply-To empty",

This is correct and will empty the "Reply-To" header. But that means
very little, since all reply methods will use a sender address if no
Reply-To is given.

BA> But when I tried leaving the reply empty (in Account
BA> Proprties>General), I was still able to reply and TheBat! received
BA> the reply.

Correct - it would.

BA> Is there another way?

Only by using a fake "from" address with no Reply-To or make the
Reply-To address a fake address so any replies would bounce.

Hi T'Buddlers,

This is an administrative cross post.

Johannes is in the process of moving the lists to new homes on
servers nearer (in the next room instead of across the country).

Please bear with us while the move and DNS changes take hold - we may
experience a little turbulence! ;-)

My thanks to Johannes, Syafril and Pit for their speedy work on this.

Re: New install message

2007-07-07 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Dear Carlos,

@7-Jul-2007, 09:08 -0300 (07-Jul 13:08 here) Carlos Martinez [CM] in
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to Roelof:

CM> I think you helped me on another matter some time ago. You are from
CM> Denmark, right?

Roelof is from the Netherlands I believe. He is one of the moderators
of this list and is often inspired to answer many questions out of the
kindness of his nature. This is a User Discussion List where support
is given peer to peer. It isn't necessarily appropriate to direct new
questions to a single person on the list.

...

CM> Please remind me another thing: where do you adjust your "reply"
CM> settings so the original message comes with the ">" signs?

In Account Properties -> Templates -> Reply. The ">" for quoting
replies should be there by default. When replying using HTML messaging
however, the default is to reply with a blue bar in the margin beside
quoted text. I'm not sure how to affect that. You can use the
%QUOTESTYLE macro in your reply template to change the way the '>' may
be prefaced. For example, in this reply, your quotes are preceded with
your initials.

(from the help file:)

Note: Replies and Forwards only.

QUOTESTYLE="expression"Specifies a quotation prefix to be used.

Possible values:

NONE - empty prefix
I - initials of the original message's sender (default)
IF - first initial of the original message's sender
N - full name of the original message's sender
F - first name of the original message's sender
L - last name of the original message's sender

You can also define an arbitrary text string alone or in conjunction
with any of the above.

Options settings. The "is" sets case insensitivity and includes
newlines in dot pattern matching instead of ending at a line break.

Re: Adding a Containers to a new toolbar

2006-07-27 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Dear M2gdh,

@27-Jul-2006, 13:14 m2gdh [M] in
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to TBTECH:

...
M> My problem is that I want to add, say for example, "view modes" to
M> my toolbar: but as a single drop-drown button, and not as separate
M> buttons.

One wonders why. The only place view modes are relevant is in the
message list. But right clicking on the message list captions gives
immediate access to all view modes. So the need for such a button on
the toolbar is redundant.

...

M> So, I click the "create new container item" icon, give it a name,
M> and it is added to the layout panel.
M> But a) its empty and b) it doesn't even appear on the new toolbar.

As far as I can see, the Container Items are for new menu items - to
create sub-menus with from what I can see. Drop downs on toolbars are
non-trivial things and I would not expect them to be supported yet.
CMIIW.

Re: problem with disappearing emails

2005-08-26 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Dear Sean,

@26-Aug-2005, 11:47 Sean O'Donoghue [SO] in
mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] said to Marck:

SO> Thanks for the "warning" about the signature delimiter - have now
SO> sorted it out

Thanks!! ;-)

SO> I have almost certainly not used Alt-click - however, thanks for
SO> the tip - and now I know how to make my emails visible without
SO> closing and restarting the Bat

Excellent.

...

SO> My daily virus scan - using AVG - has not found a single virus
SO> since Virgin started filtering viruses some time back - 2-3 years?
SO> And today it turns up 7? Quite a coincidence!

Indeed!

SO> But as you say, it could be that instead of taking them out on
SO> their server, somehow or other they are getting to my computer -
SO> have just now run AVG again and find JS/Kak there on in a temp
SO> folder.

Which proves that they are still arriving. Perhaps there was some
interaction between the ISP and the email download method you used to
use that completely prevented their arrival.

SO> It would seem therefore that since I started using TB, some
SO> viruses are not being removed when they are on the server of my
SO> ISPs - but that their headers are in my temp folder,
SO> non-executable - but this morning so far i have received 2 mails
SO> from which the viruses have been removed -on my virgin account

Perhaps it is the other account they are coming in from then.

...

Marck>> 3) You don't have a TB compatible antivirus (such as Grisoft's
Marck>> AVG) for TB to filter out infected messages itself. However,
Marck>> none of this means you have *an infection*.

SO> I use Grisoft

Perhaps you should use the TB Anti-virus perferences settings to
complete the link between TB and AVG (that's how I use it myself).

SO> But why was / is my TB behaving so strangely?

That I'm not sure of. Let's see if it was an inadvertent Alt-Click
causing the problem. Only time will tell.

...

SO> And thanks for your help

Most welcome.

If you Alt-click on anything in the message list, you are creating an
instant filter. Any messages not containing that will be hidden. Use
 to remove the instant filter.

SO> The 2 ISPs I use - Zen & Virgin = remove viruses from their
SO> systems before they get to me -

Clearly not...

SO> however, my virus checker on doing its daily check this morning
SO> informed me that it had removed 7 viruses from my system - all in
SO> bat files ie bat3cc7.tmp -

These tmp files are pre-imported files. When TB downloads messages
from your ISP, they are stored as tmp files before being loaded into
your inbox. The Bat has (as it is supposed to) downloaded messages
from your ISP. The messages were infected. I have a feeling that your
virus protection system may have blocked the files at the tmp stage,
which is why they persist.

So, the existence of these infected files in your system is as the
result of some failures. 1) Your ISP did not remove them as you
expected them to. 2) Your antivirus failed to allow TB to import them
as ordinary messages. 3) You don't have a TB compatible antivirus
(such as Grisoft's AVG) for TB to filter out infected messages itself.
However, none of this means you have *an infection*. The infected
messages have not been executed - they merely exist. So you have
nothing to worry about.

SO> viruses are i-worm/mytob.bt, Trojan horse generic ajo,
SO> worm.netsky.b - almost certainly came in with The Bat

They came in from your ISP in the normal way. The Bat! certainly
doesn't "come" with viruses!!! It is the most virus resilient email
client out there!

SO> Anyone got any suggestions - is the disappearing email related to
SO> the viruses - I assume it is

Certainly not. TB is virus proof of itself. It executes no code so
viruses do not take hold.

SO> This I have reported to the Bat people

That won't really help much.

.. It's only going to do that for the root and trusted CAs in the
address book. I doubt it's going to do that for generally held
certificates. Even then, certificate status is usual clear in the
encapsulated keys passed with an S/MIME signature.

In which case, while I accept that checking for revocations on CAs is
possible, I stand by the analysis that it's checking for revocations
on held SSL certs.

Yes - put the addresses into an address book group and write to

No, but you can be pretty inventive. You could use the "Create new
message" action to create a message with the same from / to / reply
addresses and textual body with a template something like this:

%to=''%to='%otolist'%cc=''%occlist'%-%-
%from='"%ofromname" <%ofromaddr>'%-
%replyto='%oreplyaddr'%-
%text

Or perhaps a creative use of Save / Export message + Import actions
could help.

You haven't said which version. I have to assume version 1 or 2 since
version 3 contains a vastly improved filter system in which such
things are obvious.

There are 2 methods in the old filter system:
  1) Use | as an "or" option between filter strings
  2) Use the "Alternative" tab on the filter definition to enter
 alternative search strings.

The best way I find is to only compress the essential folders on exit
and do the rest manually as a housekeeping exercise say once a week.

Essentials are Inbox, Outbox and Sent. Do this by turning off the
"Account properties ... Options ... Compress all folders on exit"
option and then, for each of the folders I have mentioned, turn on the
"Folder properties ... compress on exit" option.

They won't conflict per-se.

Why not even more simply use GnuPG with TB (as I - and others - do)?
The only conflict is having to cross-load PGP keys between PGP and
GnuPG's keyrings. Not so much a conflict as an overhead and a chore.

Mod: Lost and found

2004-09-01 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Hi T'Buddlers,

Okay - so now you're all in trauma over the release of 3.0, here's
another bombshell for y'all.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you to formally wave a very,
*very* fond farewell to Allie Martin. He is stepping down as list
moderator from today.

Allie has been moderating these lists with Leif and I for over four
years now and we have come to regard him as a very dear friend. That's
not going to change. Nor will Allie be deserting us in any way. He is
still going to be present, but as a troutee instead of a trouter.

So - good luck Allie - we're gonna miss you. :'(

Now ... we had a good look around and, although we can never replace
Allie, we hope that you will accept our choice of a new moderator to
step up to the breach. Please welcome Roelof Otten to the role of
newbie-mod! He has been one of the most polite and helpful members of
these lists over the years and has certainly earned our respect for
that. We hope that he will deserve yours in the same way.

The server is munching them, which may indicate that Thunderbird
isn't quite as 'right' as it needs to be. The server did intercept 2
of your 3 posts as having over-large attachments, but despite
approval, none of the attachments (nor the attachment of the
non-intercepted message) made it through the server.

I've not seen that happen before, which make me think the
Thunderbird has more problems than simply failing to show messages
that are MIME signed (not inline signed as you suggested). I will
submit this twice - one inline signed (this one) and one MIME signed
(next).

Challenge / reponse systems

2004-05-08 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Hi T'Buddlers,

Something is occurring that needs a moderator's hand a new rule. We
will get together and draft the change as time permits, but I feel -
on behalf of the list admins (Johannes and myself), that I should
pre-empt it with a direct plea.

Challenge / response spam filter systems look a clever idea on
paper, but this is a clear case of "cure worse than disease" in 100%
of cases. The time waste involved for someone who has just sent the
mail. The delay in delivery while the sender is awaiting approval.
The unsolicited nature of the challenge mails - which can themselves
be accidentally spam filtered and missed (as they do in my system).

We have just been made aware of a service called "RiskFreeMail". One
of our users is using them to filter mail. We don't know who and
can't throw them off the list. Anyone who writes to the list will be
challenged by this system, so please excuse us - it's beyond our
control (unless the culprit reads this and does the decent thing -
stop doing so or stops asking the list to send messages to them).

Anyway - treat this as a heads up to any using or thinking of using
a C/R service that this will probably be becoming against list rules.

Yes - and there's a macro on the library that will help you do this.

Greetings Tech Listers,

This is your monthly message from the moderation team to remind you
of the primary purpose of this discussion list.

To review the list rules, follow the link at the end of this message.

Before posting a question to the list, please check The Bat! User's
FAQ at: <http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/FAQ.html> and the list

TBTECH Mission statement

The TBTECH list has been set up for the purpose of discussing The
Bat! and related issues that are of a more technical nature than is
catered for in the TBUDL list. Such topics as Regular Expression,
RFC content and compliance, Spell-checker semantics, 3rd party
software, ISP policy, Internet protocols and anything else that
could bore a beginner into leaving the TBUDL! One exception ...
plug-in development is discussed on the TBDEV list.

Simply send messages to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> to send it to
the whole list.

See the notes at the end of this message for details about how to
manage your list membership or to leave the list.

It would probably be a good idea for you to set up a folder to keep
TBTECH messages in. If you do this, the next most useful thing to
have in place is an automatic filter to move mail from your inbox
into your TBTECH folder.

The TBUDL Rogues Gallery

There is a TBUDL Rogues Gallery, letting you put a "face to the

Want to add your face to the gallery? Here's how:

Send your picture by e-mail to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. Ideally you

For those of you who do not know how or do not have an image editing
program to do this, send the image to Marck and he'll do it.

Make sure you include your name as you want it to appear on the page.

GMane - here we come

2004-03-08 Thread Marck D Pearlstone
Hi T'Buddlers,

Well, having asked for objections to the idea of reflecting the TB
lists to GMane to provide access to the list in a News format, we
haven't received any that stood up to scrutiny.

As such, we (the mods) are giving notice that we intend to enable
the GMane feed on Wednesday. That still gives you folks 2 days to
either brace yourselves, object strongly or look forward with eager
anticipation.

One thing that we feel duty bound to do here is to provide you with
clear instructions for the use of the X-No-Archive header for those
that *really* don't want their posts echoed to this pretty well
spam-safe news feed.

1). Open "Option | Preferences" and click on "Message list | Message
headers" (http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/header-edit.gif)
2). Click on "Add" and enter the details as shown here:
http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/x-no-archive.gif
3). In your TB-list reply template, add the following:
%SetHeader("X-No-Archive","Yes")%-

That should do it.

You can only delete attached HTML versions (Content-Type:

Greetings Tech Listers,

This is your monthly message from the moderation team to remind you
of the primary purpose of this discussion list.

To review the list rules, follow the link at the end of this message.

Before posting a question to the list, please check The Bat! User's
FAQ at: <http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/FAQ.html> and the list
archive at http://tbtech.thebat.dutaint.com. To join the list, send
a message to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Set up a filter for incoming mail which looks for
Strings LocationPresence
Reply-to:.*TBTECH@ Kludges Yes
Options: Regular expressions (Checked).

The TBUDL Rogues Gallery

There is a TBUDL Rogues Gallery, letting you put a "face to the
name". The gallery can be viewed at
http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/rogues.html

Want to add your face to the gallery? Here's how:

Send your picture by e-mail to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. Ideally you
should provide it as a 120x144 jpeg image.

For those of you who do not know how or do not have an image editing
program to do this, send the image to Marck and he'll do it.

Make sure you include your name as you want it to appear on the page.

Note: This moderator's interjection is a note to all readers and not
just to the person being replied to, even if their post may have
instigated this reply. Please don't feel singled out Guy.

This posting violated the list rules regarding top posting.

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your
message and following it with all quoted text below, is not
encouraged and we actually request that you not do so on this list
because

a) It makes it difficult to glean context from what you typed at the
   top of the message

and

b) It encourages excessive quoting.

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to
which you're replying, so we know what it is you're referring to,
and then below the quotation, type your response. If you're
responding to more than one part of the original, then quote each
part separately and follow each part with your response.

Now, I know that you may not personally prefer this format and that
you may disagree with some of the reasoning here. We very much
respect this. However, this is the format that most of the active
members here prefer and all members are expected, and are being
asked to use the format that will make most of the active membership
here comfortable reading. You'll likely get a more responsive group
when you post using a style that is comfortable for them to read and
understand.

... and ...

Please include a signature delimiter in your messages. This consists
of a , i.e., a '-- ' by itself on a line.
This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without
the signature and list footers since everything below and including
the sig delimiter is excluded when quoting.

You can easily automate this process by including the sig delimiter
in your templates.

Thank you.

Could be. I don't have a build 21 of SB yet to test it with. It may
be the source data. Perhaps there's something in the message you are
using as a source that's denting it.

That's fine. The problem is here:

> =[Begin DelLS2]=
> %IF:'%-
> %SETPATTREGEXP="(?is-m)[^\n]+"%-
> %REGEXPMATCH="%_COMMENT"'<>'':'%-
> %-

> %-%-%-%-%-%REGEXPBLINDMATCH="%_COMMENT"%-
> %-%-%-%-%-%SUBPATT="5"_%-

This is the problem. '_' has been used as a delimiter and should be
changed to something else - say '`'

Make the 3 lines above into:

%_COMMENT=`%SETPATTREGEXP="%-
(?is-m)^(\w{0,3}(\>[^\S\n]*?)+[^\S\n])?[^\S\n]*(.*?)(\n((.*\n)*)\z|\z)"%-
%-%-%-%-%-%REGEXPBLINDMATCH="%_COMMENT"%-
%-%-%-%-%-%SUBPATT="5"`%-

That should help TB's indigestion. This is all untested - sorry to
guinea pig you like this.

The quickest v2 conversion method is to stick an underscore into all
%COMMENT macro references like this: %_COMMENT.

V2 treats the TO address differently. Since we're talking about a
reply template, a compromise solution is simple:

%IF:"%AbOFromEmail"<>"":"TO='' %TO='%AbOFROMName <%OFROMADDR>'"

(the 'else' clause is optional).
