Hi there!

On 20 Jan 00, at 13:26, Keith Russell wrote

AM that you have to open the message since it comes as an attachment.

This solution would be fine if, each time I forwarded a message I
could choose whether or not to use MIME, but I don't know of any way
to do this. Am I missing something?

Nope, there exists no way to do so;-(( It's a major shortcoming IMO, I'm in a
habit of widely using both MIME-forwarding (actually, judging by RFCs, it's not
a proper term, and it's not necessarily forwarding: for example, Pegasus
allows one to *attach* any _message_ to the currently edited one in the same
fashion. The proper term should be "attach the message" and this action
should be somewhere in menus, NOT in the forward template) and MIME
digests.

To correct the current behaviour is a rather long-standing wishlist item, and i
really hope it will be addressed in the version 2.

I can always go into Account Properties and check the MIME box below
the Reply template, but I certainly don't want to have to do this
every time I want to redirect (pardon me--bounce) a message. And if I
leave it permanently checked, I may start to look like an AOL
 newbie--MIME within MIME within MIME

Definitely. The option to forward message this way should be put into the
menus, since the deceision is made based on the current message, not based
on the current account (or even folder).

TB! v 1.39 Installation

2000-01-20 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello fellow TBUDL members,

Wednesday, Jan 19, 2000 07:13:30 I wrote to ask:

Does upgrading from v. 1.38e to v. 1.39 involve more than switching
the .exe file? (as in the last 2 previous upgrades - the last of which
also had a new help file if I remember correctly).

The file - that was downloaded on Jan 19 from
http://www.ritlabs.com/ftp/pub/the_bat/the_bat.exe
is evidently not a compressed file and wants to go into a setup
routine when I click on it. Do I need to go through that?

The above was included in a post with a number of other issues and
wasn't responded to.

Lastly, in that post I made a number other comments that I considered
constructive but were not taken or answered as such by all parties.

One of the aspects that I most appreciate about TB is the mentality of
those who use it. This has contributed greatly to the high quality
interchange found on TBUDL, as compared to other trashier lists, and I
sincerely hope that the same high standard of civility continues to
predominate rather than be downgraded by those that happen to think
differently and are not prepared to tolerate opinions contrary to
their own.

TB as it is surpasses the overall convenience offered by all other
email clients I've tried, particularly in the areas most important to
me. No doubt it will continued to be improved.

Beyond that, anyone wishing to get aggressive with me in relation to
any of my comments is invited to do it off list, where it will be
dealt with swiftly and appropriately.

Yes you can, with no harm to your installation. It will simply upgrade
the relevant files. I have been using the same TB install through all the
upgrades since April, 1999.

The above was included in a post with a number of other issues and

Issues that were discussed at length among the longstanding, more
vocal members in previous threads. :) Silence meant agreement or
indifference. System wide filters, virtual folders, the ability to edit
received messages, an online/offline toggle to prevent automatic checking
of mail when disconnected and color priority flagging have all been
discussed and more or less conceded to as useful, worthwhile wishes. :)

Beyond that, anyone wishing to get aggressive with me in relation to any

I wonder if it would cause a lot of additional bloat to add the
ability drag a message into the editor and have it MIME attached,

MIME attach several messages. But that's a different can of worms. :)

Replace IE by Netscape and I have the same question. :)

This was discussed in some detail not too long ago, and I think the
final conclusion was that either you get Opera (another Browser) or
use a work around instead. If I remember correctly, the reason Opera
works is because Opera can be configured to open all new links in new
windows (or something to that effect), while Netscape and IE require
the program calling them to specify explicitly that a new window is
required. There is a work around, but it is messy. Here it is:

First go to IE (or Netscape), and open a new window. Put the new
window on top, then go to TB and click on your link. It is an ugly
work around, but that's the only one that seems to have emerged so
 far.

If you find a better solution or work around, please post it. I know
I would like to have this functionality too. :)

SOT: XNews tricks...

2000-01-20 Thread Steve Lamb

There was an individual here recently who asked if TB! would have
newsreading capabilities because he wanted to save like messages from mail and
news in the same folder. Just something I ran across reading the XNews
manual.

You can share folders with NewsXpress and Eudora. Open the folders window, add
a folder, then select Folder|Change File and find the NewsXpress or Eudora
folder file you wish to use. Note: because Xnews keeps an index file (with the
extension .hdr), if what's in the .hdr file does not match what's in the
folder (.mbx) file, Xnews will give you a warning saying that the index has to
be rebuilt. This is normal.

Wonder if RITLABS would talk to the XNews guy and have the same capability
for TB!. Seems like the ideal solution.

You have basically disabled the function of marking messages as "read"

I want to reply to later. Meanwhile, time to mark message as read is

There was also a discussion about an adiitional flag, "seen" (as

relpies. I haven't heard whether this will be available in v2, but
think not.

Having to kill Dupes

2000-01-20 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello all fellow TBUDL members,

The prodigy.net.mx server TBUDL the Opera lists come in on provides
little storage space and I plan on being elsewhere and off line for a
few days, so I decided to delete messages from the server now, that
are normally deleted automatically a day later when downloading.

As the subject suggests, TB is downloading yesterday's messages again.
Killing dupes is no major chore, but I figured I'd post this and maybe
draw an enlightening comment or two about it.

Thanks in advance.

I dislike system trashcans. :-D I have the hassle of having to clear
them since I hardly EVER restore anything. You can send your system in a
tizzy as I've seen others do when they delete stuff that is too large for
the recycle bin. Have you ever done it? When I got my compaq laptop, the
first thing I did was to delete the contents of the backup partition. I do
my own backups you see. I did it via the CLI. A friend of mine asked me
whether or not he could delete his backup since we used the same laptops.
I said sure . Booom. He selected the folder and deleted 400MB of stuff
to the recycle bin. Eeeek!

Whenever I hit Shift-Del, *I mean it* hence no recycle bin to reduce
my HD life span. :) It's kinda difficult to tap shift-del accidentally or
in a swift move of the mouse hit 'del folder contents'.

Tell me which of the following situations you'd like to be in:

  - - - situation 1

[..snip..]

Of course not. You don't get my point do you?

  - - - situation 2

[..snip..]

I already have this feature where I need it and that is in text and
photo-editing. :-D I just don't cater to a system wide one. It's
inefficient. Thank goodness I can bypass it. I loved OS/2 for not having a
recycle bin by default.

Well, I hit the reply button to your forwarded message and the message
was addressed to you and not Marck. I have to rectify that and then delete
out your little intro on who it's from etc. and your begin and end quote
stuff to get a decent reply back to the writer of the original message.

-second option-

Redirect the message. Now when I read the message the body of the
message is not quoted and is undisturbed. I hit reply and it is addressed
to the person who wrote the message and not the redirector of the message.
The problem here is the relative anonymity of redirecting on the part of
the redirector. The only way the recipient will know how they got the
message is to examine the headers and look at the X-Sender or the
redirector may edit the reply-to headers with adding "by way of
redirectors address". This has been shown not to be a good idea however.

-third option-

MIME forward the message. In so doing, the recipient knows without a
doubt that the message was not originally sent to him. On opening the
attached message, he views it intact, is able to examine the intact
headers etc. When he hits reply, the appropriate addressing comes up. The
only drawback to this, which I personally don't consider to be one, is
that you have to open the message since it comes as an attachment.

The good portion of the chatter, however, was how to automagically, by
way of template macros, get the 'by way of redirectors address' inserted
in the reply:to headers.

Hello Ralf,

RB However, it would be interesting to know which headers are considered to
RB be a "Sender" in The Bat!. Maybe one of the developers can shed some
RB light on this?

AFAICR, Sender = From / Reply-To / Return-path

Reply-To field contained the word "postmaster" in the host name (by
the way, I suggest you to use "postmaster@" instead).

Wild guess, Hamster is a local news server. XNews doesn't have true

TB's Threading Peculiarities

2000-01-20 Thread Nick Andriash

Hello Batters,

I've tried so many ways to sort and view threads, and I've yet to find a
combination that works for me. The closest I've come to what I would
consider _ideal_ is this:

Display: All messages
Sort by: Creation time... descending
View Threads by: References (standard)

Still, I'll see a thread where the first message is the original, as it
should be, then most, but not all, of the replies are listed in
descending order with the little + sign next to each one. Other
combinations I've tried will list the replies _without_ the + signs, but
then I'll find the original message stuck somewhere in the middle of the
thread, which doesn't make sense to me, and at times will make it
difficult to follow the thread.

What combinations of viewing preferences would allow TB to simply list
the original message as the first message in a thread, followed in
chronological order by all the replies, and without the little + signs
necessitating all the extra mouse clicks required to read the thread?
What have others found that works for them?
