I've never had it hang in the middle of a download - once it starts
downloading messages everything's fine. Where it gets hung up is the
"Connecting to Server" stage, but it never times out (last night it
sat there for over 9 hours because I forgot to shut down TB when I
left work).

I confirm this. Last night at home, CC hung while downloading message
37/129. Obviously a problem either with the POP server or my
connection to the ISP. Timeout didn't kick in, because it works only
in the first stage, when "Connecting to Server...".

If Hotmail gives you a POP server that you can log onto, then you can.
I have Yahoo accounts with which I both receive and send email with
TB, but Yahoo is more open about such things than MSFT.

I think this depends on MSFT rather than anything RIT Labs might do.

I've had similar experience quite often ever since I got a version
with the new Connection Center. In my case, the CC just sits there,
not showing any activity and trying to abort or delete the task does
nothing, which is a little irritating. TB itself, though, doesn't hang
or freeze. I think this happens mostly with the couple Web mail
accounts, but whatever the reason, I'd prefer that CC would quit with
an error message.

As far as downloading Hotmail email with TB!, yes, you can using
Web2Pop. Setup is easy and it works great. I have been using it for a
while now.  http://www.jmasoftware.com

To clarify, OE doesn't "download" Hotmail...it "synchronizes" with
what is on the Hotmail servers. With Web2Pop, it actually DOWNLOADS it
and, TB! can be set up to "delete messages on the server" thereby
eliminating Hotmail contacting you with the annoying: "Your account size
is too large". OE just coordinates with what is on the server so it is not
actually downloading it. Another reason I couldn't stand using it
"just" to read Hotmail. lol

Just be forewarned that any HTML emails received at your Hotmail account
and downloaded using TB!/W2P will not show HTML graphic unless they are
sent WITH the email.. or something like that. (ie: HTML format email
will not show graphics). Maybe someone else here can clarify; it's been
so long since I have attempted to explain that ;)

Anyways, good luck with W2P. It is tops as far as I am concerned,
making web-based email POP3 retrievable with your favourite email
clientin my case, TB!. :)

Ciao for now,
~~~Angel
Do not give up on TB so easily...
What  you  could  possibly  do  is to create one Master Account and as many user
Accounts.
The   Master  account  is setup to receive and send messages. Disable the 'check
mail' options in all other user accounts.
This will also contain filters of two kinds.
1. Incoming filter which will move the messages to the user accounts.
2.  out going filters : Which will move the sent messages back to the respective
accounts
What  you  will  then  need  to  do  is to have a standard template in each user
account  which  includes  %Account="Master_Account" (or whatever name you give).
This  will  ensure  that  all mails created are put in the out box of the master
account.
This  then  has  the  possibility of users being able to password protect their
accounts.
On my office computer, the CC hangs frequently (i.e. several times a
day, most days) on one particular account, but never (at least not in
several months) on any of my other accounts. That computer runs W2K
Pro with the ezTrust firewall.
On my home computer, one account occasionally hangs (it used to be
frequent, but it's improved lately). This account never hangs on the
office computer, and the account that hangs on the office computer
never hangs on the home computer. The home computer is running WinNT
4.0, also with the ezTrust firewall.
I don't know where the problem is, but it would be extremely helpful
if the CC would time out after a while - I have to keep it visible
just so I can check now and then to see if it's hung.
Best Regards
Shauna
There's no reason for TB to hang and the built-in timeout shouldn't
need configuration. I'm looking for another source for the hang.
Even there TB's own timeout should do the job just fine. I often have
network issues here (the cable regularly falls out of the back of my
laptop ) without hanging the CC. That's why I asked about ZA, which
has been known to hang the CC in the past.
You can use separate accounts, with one account configured to combine
the collecting and the sending of mail and all other accounts
configured not to do so.
In the collecting account you create filters that put the messages to
the right account (filter on recipient).
TT> My option is obviously to have one account and automatically filter the
Not necessarily so.
This can be done per folder and also on a per account base. (Per
folder you can check the folder properties and change the identity.)
TT> Secondly, would it be possible for several users to automatically copy sent
TT> msgs to their 'own' sent mail' folder?
Yes. With different accounts that's done automatically. ;-) When
working with a folder per user, you can use outgoing filters to take
care of that.
The only difference for your options is that accounts have a
possibility to be password protected and folder cannot. (I think)
This is sometimes attributable to the use of ZoneAlarm. You don't say
This is sometimes attributable to the use of ZoneAlarm. You don't say
what version of TB you are using nor on which operating system.
Not text files exactly, but they aren't encrypted (you can read them
Interesting, does it exist an possibility to pwd protect folders so each
How are TB's folder files stored on disk, raw text files or compressed in
If I go for a solution like this I probably need some help to set up
Just another issue which comes to my mind:  I could use a simple IMAP server
Does anyone of you know about a simple IMAP windows mail server.
I have used Hamster a bit, but it only supports POP3.
You can use folder-level templates, and put the %FROMNAME="name" (the name in
the From: field), %FROMADDR="address" (address in the From: field),
%REPLYNAME="name" (Reply-To: name) %REPLYADDR="address" (Reply-To:
You can probably use Outgoing mail filters for that.
2001-11-21 Thread Tor Tveitane
Thanks to all for valuable input and especially to Peter for the 'Leav msgs
on server' tip.  I'll try this out, and it seems to be a great tip.
One of you asked if user1...user20 would use the same notebook for messaging
in the bush, and I confirm that.
Unfortunately the radio mail server is a commercial site which our server is
just forwarding our messages to, so it would cost us a fortune if we need to
create an account for each user with them.  So I realize that I cannot use
separate user accounts which fetch msgs from one multidrop pop account with
TB.
My option is obviously to have one account and automatically filter the
received msgs into separate folders for each user.  I have some questions
regarding this:
If we decide to use TB with our scenario in this mode, what about changing
the 'Sender' and Reply to' address for the different users.  Does it exist
an elegant way to do this?
Secondly, would it be possible for several users to automatically copy sent
msgs to their 'own' sent mail' folder?
I realize that you answer is probably negative to the two questions above
and that my only option is to have TB manage separate user profiles linked
to separate pop3 accounts.  But maybe someone has a good suggestion up the
sleeve??
Anyway I would like to thank for the enthusiasm and willingness to help I
have encountered in this group.
regards
It doesn't change the autocompletion feature - if you have two entries
you are still able to utilize (so much for style!) +<+>. You
won't see the memo during autocompletion. I don't know if you can see
it without opening the AB.
As long as you can see from the address if it is work or home
everything is alright ...
Hmm, another way comes to mind: Use specific handles (nicknames) for
different addresses, e.g. John Doe's working address gets "Working"
and his home address "Home". Only difficulty, you have to choose
unique handles for your addressees.
There was something about it on TBBETA. IIRC, the end of this week
could see 1.54. Remember though that this depends on RITLabs and
fixing some (serious) bugs.
- From my experience with TB! I don't think it will take much longer for
the next official release. And they have given us a time frame for the
major release of v2, which is not that far from now ...
The mailto: association should come back if you select the option in
Outlook to make it your default email program. You can also do this
via IE.
If that doesn't bring back the .vcf association, you can use the File
Types dialog in Windows to point .vcf at Outlook. How it's done
depends on your windows version.
Or you can reinstall OL (or in OL2K or later use Detect and Repair
LDAP revealed
2001-11-21 Thread Alastair Scott
I had some time and decided to get this (populating my own address
book from a LDAP address book) working. Done as follows:
1. Set up two new address books.
a. The first is the source, and has properties:
Name - Global Address List (for example)
Use this book as default ... - not ticked
This address book is associated with an LDAP server - ticked
LDAP server details - filled in
Return maximum 100 matches (say) - the default is 1 which won't get
you very far with a big company :)
b. The second is the target, and has properties:
Name - Alastair's Address Book (for example)
Use this book as default ... - ticked
This address book is associated with an LDAP server - not ticked
LDAP server details - not filled in
2. This done, the task is to build up your personal address book (the
target) by doing LDAP searches on the LDAP address list (the source)
then dragging matched names from source to target. To do this:
a. In The Bat! press F8 then F7, which brings up the LDAP search
window (see the picture as attached);
b. Type in the partial* name you're searching for, then tick only the
name of the source in the bottom pane (green arrows);
c. Press Start and wait for the the matched names, if any, to appear
in the right-hand pane (behind the LDAP search window);
d. Drag and drop the names you want into the target (red arrow);
e. Press New Search, then go back to step b.
By doing b-e over and over again you can gradually build up your
personal address book by drag and drop; you can always see what you've
dragged and dropped by clicking on the target's icon (the 'blue book'
in the left-hand pane) then going back to the source (the 'green
book') before doing another search.
I find that, if you make one address book both source and target, you
get nowhere; the search results _are_ the address book as each LDAP
search, as far as I can tell, replaces the address book contents (!)
Unfortunately, this part of The Bat! is both badly documented and has
a confusing, because over-complex, user interface :(
Alastair
* On my server the only match is on surnames (the addresses are stored
as ) and at least three characters have to be
typed otherwise there's nothing returned.
A workaround: use a dash:
  Smith - Work
  Smith - Home
or
  Smith - Work -
  Smith - Home -
I would suggest not to put "- Work/Home -" as the last name, but just
as display name.
Example:
  First name:   John
 Middle name:
   Last name:   Smith
 Display name as:   John Smith - Home -
etc.
The above works with autocomplete.
I didn't try backup/restore though...
help address book woes
2001-11-21 Thread Rick Reumann
Just when I think I have it all figured out:)
Let me continue with what I am trying to do first off and then I'd
appreciate any help. I'm sure this is a common situation...
You have a contact that has two email addresses a work one and a home
email address. Now when I start a new message I want to be able to use
the autocomplete feature in the TO field ( ctrl + ) to pull up these
two addresses to select from.
What I have tried so far was putting in for a last name something
like:
Smith (work)
and then another contact entry with the last name:
Smith (home)
(Ideally of course I'd like to be able to have these two email
addresses to be able to be selected from one contact entry with auto
complete but don't see how that is possible).  Now here are some
problems...
The above situation only works with autocomplete if I start with "
(quotes) in the TO field and then use ( ctrl + ). The problem is if
the last name doesn't have the ( work ) or ( home ) ending then it doesn't
pull up any names. The other big problem is the address book does some
funky things whenever I try to back it up and restore it. I'm getting
so frustrated because whenever I try to back it up and restore it ends
up sticking the Last Name into the middle name field. (So in the above
Smith would end up being put into the middle name). So this solution I
have is not going to work.
Can someone please suggest to me the best way to get to use
auto complete for contacts where I need to have a work email address
and/or a home email address appear for the contact. I'm not opposed to
entering the contact in twice but I can't seem to figure out how to
even enter it such that it works correctly and will allow me to back
up with out any problems.
Has anyone come across an adequate solution?
Please let me know.
Thanks
Rick
OK, maybe :-) I do know exactly one: you :-)
Let's imagine I trust my provider (have no reason yet for not doing
this) ... I'm dialed in (or connected via a permanent connection) to
my provider, therefore I'm still in it's local network. No additional
reason for using SSL or SSH _if_ I trust this network.
But imagine a mail hoster like GMX: they would _never_ grant you SSH
access so you're quit :-)
All in all we're walking straight off topic, I'd suggest stopping here:-)
We asserted TB! has no SSH support and I believe RIT can not effort
the time implementing rudimentary (Open)SSH functions as they have to
fix 1.54/Beta, plan to implement SSL and several other things, but
maybe one day even this functionality is given :-)
You don't _need_ it. Would be more convenient if TB! included a
scaled-down ssh client, point.
You don't _need_ SSL support in TB! either. ssltunnel anyone?
Err... At least 80% (all people from the two colleges I'm involved in,
the people from a company I manage the IT system, the clients of my
ISP with webhosting. That several hundreds of people and I know only a
dozen or so outside of these). But then, OK, maybe I'm not the typical
I'm not sure of that. The link between the SSH host and the POP host
will be through the provider's localnet. If you don't trust the
provider's localnet, you are screwed anyway, even with SSL or
direct-to-pop-host-ssh, because of the _arrival_ of the mail (SMTP)!
Absolutely correct! And where is the point I need SSH support in TB!?
The question was for SSH support within TB! so my problem was: how
should TB! itself tunnel the connection itself establishes ... that's
_really much_ overhead to implement for this small amount of usage
(how many people do you know being able to POP their mailbox this way
[in % of total known e-mailing people]?).
OTOH:
If he's already using an external SSH tool he could setup this and
point his TB! to the local port as you suggested, but that way TB!
would not need any SSH support. You see my problem with understanding
the question?
LEM> communication is encrypted between you and sshhost, but not between
LEM> sshhost and pophost (if they are different).
And there my next problem is: a small ISP would have POP & Shell (e.g.
for WebSpace) maybe located on one machine so this is a secure way.
A big one will have at least and minimum two machines for this two
very different things (just for security reasons). So my security
introduced by a SSH secured line shrinks.
With this conditions as background I'd prefer the (planned to come)
SSL support within TB! over SSH as chances are higher to meet a SSL
supporting POP3/IMAP toaster :)
I don't have found a way to avoid the annoying middle name. Even LDIF
& Tab-seperated don't work full qualified :-(
The TAB-file even had an empty field in row 'Middle Name' and even
Excel recognized it correctly but re-importing this back into TB!-AB
brought me a middle name where no was before.
The good thing is: it's the first part of the last name _doubled_ as
middle name, so the last name is completely intact, you only have to
delete the superfluous middle name.
So try out exporting as LDIF or TAB, or even try the Backup and/or
Synchronize utilities TB! offers to keep two address book in sync :-)
I'll file a bug report in BugTracking system dealing with this issue.
Hope that helps
I don't know. It's not documented and I can't figure it out myself. It
You can, but with the search utility, there is an easier way (see
below).
P> I do wish the search supported simple boolean operators.
It does.  To search for multiple words/phrases, the syntax is as
follows:
AND: word1&word2
OR:  word1|word2
For regular expressions, the OR syntax is basically the same as what
I've written.  However, the AND is more difficult because the words
can be in any order.  If you want to know the regular expression
method in any case, perhaps the TBTECH forum would be more
appropriate.
already downloaded and therefore minimizes again the chance to double
load a message. Set it up to leave on server for one day and your done
with a minimum of overhead but a maximum of fitting your needs.
Just my 0.02 € :-)
