Re: AV Plug-ins vs. Not

2002-04-22 Thread ETM

I have had two occasions when TB and my AV program circled the
campfire as TB downloaded to a tmp file and the AV program
notified me I had received an exploit virus. On each occasion, I
went out to the web and deleted the offending emails at the
server. Then it was necessary to delete TB's tmp files to
satisfy (shut up) the AV program. I had the impression that using
dispatch would allow me to get to those emails and to delete them
at the server level. However, I was not successful. How does
one actually use dispatch from within TB to delete mail at the
server?

Both of the occasions involved false positives when
someone had written asking about the html exploit virus and
quoted a bit too much of the string involved smile but it gave
me a chance to see the interaction between TB and the AV program.

When you open the Mail Dispatcher and it connects, you see the
different columns. If a message is only checked for deletion, TB! does
send the DELETE command to the server.

If a message is not deleted, either the command is not received or not
understood by the server.

Automatically store reply in same folder

2002-04-22 Thread Christopher Taylor-Davies

I am in the process of converting from Outlook to the Bat (1.60c) and
am busy setting up incoming filters happily.

One thing that Outlook let you specify was to automatically store a
outgoing reply in the same folder as the original message. For most
purposes this avoided the need for outgoing filters.

Is there a way of setting this up in the Bat, either with a general
filter, or some option that I have missed somewhere?

How do you normally download your messages from the server to TB!. If
you download directly with TB! without using one of those applications
to help with web based mail (like web2POP), then the dispatcher should
work. Just connect using CTRL+Shift+F2, to display all messages, old
and new. The messages on the server will be listed. Mark the offending
message for only deletion and let it process the mail.

I don't see why the dispatcher shouldn't work via an intermediary
application as well anyway. Odd that it will not work for you. Just be
sure to use the dispatch *all* messages option.

A good thing to do is that whenever you create an incoming filter,
copy it to your outbox and change the string parameter. If you filter
on sender, change it to recipient.

It's a daunting limitation when you already have 50 filters and wish
to move outgoing mail to the original message folders.

You've figured most of it out already. You can also search for clips

Only the user can tell if he has a need for such a tool. There are a

The fact that Inbox is the default folder where TB will put incoming
mail that is filtered to other folders, does not mean it is different
to any other folder. It is just a folder and different people may use
it in different ways.

Like any other folder, it does require a confirmation before deleting

difficult to make a mistake and delete the whole contents of a wrong

ACM I see. There is a demand for global filters. I don't know if and when
ACM it will be implemented. Maybe another one of those version 2 series
ACM feature additions.

I'm using 14 accounts, no less 8-), on a daily basis for different
roles. Among other things, I'm webmaster for several web sites owned
by different organizations.

Most of the time I need automatic replies, templates etc. to be
different for each account, and this is where TB! excels. I would,
however, like to have global filters as well. Most of all for fighting
Spam. I have received up to 5 copies of the same message at the same
time for different accounts 8-).

TheBat! upgrade

On the website I only see a complete download for

Thanks in advance.

Btw, there is a very annoying bug in versions 1.60x: you cannot browse
folders/accounts anymore by first letter of their names. I have ~350
folders in 20+ accounts with specific character(s) at the beginning of
name of each account (#) and main folders' names (1, 2, 3, , $, *...)
which was of the great advantage when I have to find things quickly,
and all of that is now completely useless. Aside any other things, it
is main one which is keeping me away of those versions. Is there any
chance for this to be fixed soon?

Can't be done with TB, afaik TB won't filter on attachment names. It
is possible to disable the possibility to open those attachments.
(Options - Preferences - Warnings) TB's default is not to open them.

LFRC Any good idea ?

Two remarks, though.

Your lines are rather long, that makes quoting bothersome. Netiquette
suggests lines shorter than 75 characters. (Options - Editor
preferences -General: Check autowrap and set wrap text at 75 or 70
characters)

Most users of this list, especially the most prone to answer, read
this list threaded by reference. By answering another message on the
list, even when you change the subject the message will appear in the
same thread. In the case of the longer lasting threads this might
cause your message not to receive the attention it would've gotten
when you started a new thread.

M not hit rest of other 8, it simply stops.

RO You mean to say that you've got ten folders with the same name?

Yep. But in different accounts. Another example: I have prefix 1
before name of each account; this way I can switch fast between them.
For important folders, regardless accounts, I have prefix 2 etc.
So just by picking keys I find things in seconds.

RO I can't switch between different folders with the same name,

You cannot even *make* folders with a same name in a same level. But
if they are not in the same level, and still have same name - you can.
It is same as in Winblows Explorer. But this is word about *first
letter* (of a name) here as a reference, not about entire name.

RO can't switch between Inboxes, but for the rest

If you have no other folders beginning with I you can easily switch
between Inboxes through accounts.

It seems we couldn't understand each other.

Just curious, why did you import the csv file into Yahoo, then sync to

Hello ETM,

I had the same problem. Klez seems to spread fast recently.

I use AVP which detected the infected mail and stopped
downloading.
I deleted the BAT*.TMP file by hand and logged in again using
the dispatch option. Then I looked for the infected mail and
selected delete and unselected download.
This way I could remove the virus mail on the server without a
third party program.

IFrame.Exploit virus

2002-04-22 Thread Lynna Lunsford

Is this virus the one called Klez? In the past two days
someone sent me ( or I received) a couple different
Virus. Once had a attachment file called active.exe.
AVG did not alarm when I downloaded it but I had a good
idea that it was a virus, so when I selected the
file, preparing to save it to a location to scan AVG
alarm popped up. I never ran the execution file just
deleted it. AND promptly emptied and compressed the
trash can.

Funny thing is I have recently received a email that
said it was from mail sub system making it look like it
was a email that I had sent out, showing it was from
me. Like it had bounced back. But when it had a
attachment. So I looked to see if I had any random
messages going out ( in my sent folder ) - everything
looked normal. So I ran a completed scan with AVG and
it turned up nothing. My computer is clean. Still
doubting I went to Trends Site and am running the
House Call online scan. Thus far, nothing.
BUT if my machine is clean, and it seems to be, then
there is a virus out there that will send you a message
appearing to be a bounced message from your machine. It
will have attachments and I am assuming ---If you click
on them to see what they are you will be infected.

AS far as I can tell The Bat has not opened or allowed
any of these virus / worms to activate on their own.
Any information on how to double check security of The
Bat is appreciated.
Thanks,
Lynna

With this new known filter adding people to your address book becomes
a lot more important. But there is no way currently to quickly remove
people from the address book. It is a two click process to add
someone. . . but quite a bit more complicated to remove them.

So my feature request is for a remove from address book as a right
click option for any email address.

What do you guys think?

Good question. I can't actually remember now, it's been so long:)
Actually, I think the problem was that The Bat! and Yahoo actually
was able to store more different fields than the Palm allowed so
my goal ( I think ) was to keep The Bat! and Yahoo synched up
correctly and then used the yahoo synch feature to keep it synched
with the Palm. Needless to say I've just dropped doing any
synching between The Bat, Yahoo, and The Palm. I ended up with
duplicate records and things going into the wrong places, it was
just a mess so I gave up.

I look forward the perfect solution.

I don't think that's why Gates has his money but that's another story
inappropriate to this forum. :-)

TB! is quite user friendly but more suited to the advanced user.
There's no one program for everyone and that's the beauty of choice
and diversity.

I was just looking at OE (so long since I opened the thing) and
there's one way that I could find for emptying the trash (deleted
items) folder. You right click the folder and hit the Empty deleted
items folder item (identical to TB!). You cannot do the same with any
other folder. Why? Because of the userbase. TB!'s userbase wouldn't
tolerate that stifled functionality ... which supposedly exists in the
interest of human error.

It's all give and take. With increased functionality comes complexity
and increased user responsibility. Some companies aptly attack this
very real issue by offering multiple versions for different user types
like basic, standard and pro versions. TB! does come in different
flavours but only with respect to security models. In those other
flavours, it's even more complex. It's clearly not being marketed for
the very basic user and I don't blame the company since the basic user
has multiple options at their disposal, many of which are free of cost.

A filter is set up once under Eudora and then enabled for the function

It seems like more work and maintenance that way.

Folder colours

OK ... probably yet another stupid question no doubt due to yet
another brain freeze on my part :-)

I have one of my accounts set up with multiple folders and sub folders
for all my list mail. All the received folders are blue. I have no
recollection of making them blue - they just are! I have just created
another set of folders/sub folders for yet another list I have
subscribed to, but the received folder in this tree doesn't appear
as blue. Is there anyway I can make it the same colour as the others?

I am probably missing something here (as usual!) but I really don't
remember doing anything in the first place to create the blue folders.
Am I just forgetting what I did?

Many thanks! (using version 1.60c)
