Perhaps this is a stupid question, but are you sure that you are using "Send" or "Put in Outbox"? Are you sure that you are not using "Save as Draft"? In other words, how are you hitting send? GV> Any idea why this might happen, or what I can do to fix it? The only thing I can think of is you are hitting the wrong key combination or icon. Why do outbound messages hang in the outbox?
Hello The Bat user list, I have recently moved my installation to a Windows 2000 computer, with TB as a secondary MUA (my personal one, rather than the "work" one) and have discovered something odd: When I write a message and hit "send" the message (I would think) should move over to the outbox and transmit at the next interval. But, it doesn't. It seems to get "parked" in the outbox, and has to manually be changed over to actually send out. Take a quick look at the headers... some (helpful) mail servers put in "may be forged" headers along with the details. This is often a good sign that the spammer attempted to claim the message was from a source it wasn't. For example: Received: from caramail.com (host-213-131-71-117.link.com.eg [213.131.71.117] (may be forged)) by vampire.certiflexdimension.com (8.11.2/8.11.6) with SMTP id g5NDbnM09140 for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sun, 23 Jun 2002 08:37:51 -0500 Notice the line says it's from caramail.com, then has the real host details of a dial up connection in the brackets... clearly the spammer attempted to forge the header, but the mail server pointed it out. But apart from actually sitting there, and processing them, no real quick way. I guess you could submit it to spamcop, and get spamcop to do all the header processing for you, and when you have the details, cancel the report... just an idea ;) -- Jonathan Angliss ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Current Ver: 1.60q FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

Try looking at the Full headers for the email... The From: header is easily forged, as you can tell, and can also be guessed from the recent Klez virus (or 99% of spam) ;) By tracing down the recieved headers, you can work out the path it took, and ultimately the senders ISP, providing they didn't use some obscure proxy server to send through. > If so, this might help me track an email for a friend > which we suspect contains a forged sender location. But more often the originating addresses are offshore > relay points, i.e., not *really* the origination points. Actually, all email has an IP address assigned by the mail server, even if open relays etc. You'd still be able to track down the sending server, and then the originating IP address, otherwise a service such as spamcop would be completely useless. Often spammers try to add fake received headers, claiming they're from hotmail/yahoo, but the IP addresses are often not the same, which is why spamcop does chain test, and does a DNS, then an rDNS on the IP address/host found in the email. There are two situations where the IP address in the headers would not be the real senders, and that'd be an exploited server mail script such as formmail.pl (I've personally been a victim to this one, as one of our clients was running it), or where somebody has used an open proxy port to 'bounce' mail through it. In the former situation, with spamcop, the offending server is notified of the bad script (it is often easy to spot bad formmail script useage by the headers, when an email comes from root@localhost or nobody@localhost, or in my case [EMAIL PROTECTED]). In the later, often the ISP takes action against the open proxy provider, assuming they're the offenders. I've seen a lot of the former, but never seen the later occuring, although it is a possibility, I doubt most spammers would spend the several hours required to track down an open proxy. -- Jonathan Angliss ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Current Ver: 1.60q FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

I still think that this sounds like an account configuration problem. For some reason, the mail server does not like the mail being sent from TB - when you create a message, and then view the headers (Ctrl-Shft-K) when the message is in the Outbook, are the From: Reply-To: and To: headers what they should be? With the messages from TBUDL, you cannot receive messages from OE or Becky? This suggests that the email address that you subscribed from is not the one that you are checking with your mail clients. Did you get any of the confirmation emails back from the Listar address when you subscribed to the list? Perhaps your current account in TB is corrupted in some way. Try creating a new Account in TB, and re-enter all of the server details and email addresses from scratch. Do not try to import the data - start again. Other than this, I don't know what the problem is. Hope this helps. Please forgive me but I am unable to receive messages from the list (apparently regardless of my email client) and as such cannot respond to those that responded to my earlier post. I have checked my Account settings, I have uninstalled and re-installed twice and I have installed a backup version of 1.60q. Still nothing works ; (. Januk indicated: " The more common problem was that most SMTP servers would reject mail being sent through them unless the FROM and/or REPLY-TO addresses matched yourISP address. As far as I can tell my FROM 7 REPLY TO are the same, however I was messing around ( a couple of weeks ago) with a template for the AVG plugin...don't know if this has anything to do with it but when I was sending test messages I would receive an error message indicating that the message was undeliverable but in the error it had changed my [sender] email from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED]! Are you using a forwarding address for TBUDL and to send message? I used to use forwarding addresses exclusively and some POP3 servers would simply reject mail from those addresses. The more common problem was that most SMTP servers would reject mail being sent through them unless the FROM and/or REPLY-TO addresses matched your ISP address. So for example, if you had an account @softhome.net, then you couldn't send through their server with the address @canada.com. -- Thanks for writing, Januk Aggarwal Was August Mobius so rigid that he could only see one side of a question? It sounds like your account properties may be corrupted. Have a look at Account Properties, and check that you have the correct User Name and Password in the SMTP Server settings, and that you are using the correct SMTP server address. One reason the TBUDL list may be rejecting your messages is that your email address appears different - that is, the messages are being sent with a From: or Reply-To: address that is different from the ones you originally subscribed using. Have you stopped receiving any mail, or just mail from TBUDL? Can you collect mail from TBUDL in Outlook? Check your POP3 server settings as well. Hi Laura, awc> I periodically receive email from "me" that is not sent from me. awc> If I look at the view headers, it says it came from me! How can awc> this be? If these messages have attachments and they're about 40 KB or 140 KB in size, it's probably a virus on the computer of an Outlook user who has you in his address book. You should not report viruses to Spamcop. I've had a few spam messages that included my own e-mail address (though not as the sender) and Spamcop ignored those. You can usually see from the Spamcop report if it plans to send a report to your own ISP. I'd try to prevent that from happening :-) I'm also getting messages from unknown companies telling me that my message (which I never sent) could not be delivered or was rejected. That too is a result of viruses spreading themselves, pretending they come from you. Yesterday I had an angry customer on the phone who thought he received a virus from my office! Sometimes the spammers use special software that take the email it's sending to, and use the same from address. They repeat this on all the emails they send, so [EMAIL PROTECTED] will have got an email from [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] will get an email from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usually Spamcop is smart enough to realise that both the to, and from addresses are the same, and discard them. The information it is really after is the headers from which the mail came from. If you notice when you go to submit the email, there are check boxes showing you who it is contacting... normally references to the From: case are unchecked because 99% of the time, they're fake. Next time you get an email like that, before submitting, check the reports, and ensure that none are being sent about the From address. -- Jonathan Angliss ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Current Ver: 1.60q FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

Can Not Send Mail!!
Something very strange is happening I have not been receiving any message from TBUDL since Friday and now, for no apparent reason, all of a sudden I cannot send any messages from TB! v. 1.60q. I get an error message saying "Edit Message -> "Recipients Address" Message has not been sent. Server reply Error: Message content rejected." I pinged my ISP's mail server - it was responding fine. I called my ISP tech support - was able to send them mail using OE, but received the same error when trying to send thru TB!. I am able to receive messages I send myself from OE, as well as messages from other outside sources. The first time I tried to send this message to the list I received a response I was not recognized as a member...so I had to re-subscribe! Pleeease help! I love TB! and want it back! Hi Claude, CR> The only thing I know, is that he wrote me from a compuserve CR> address probably with the compuserve software, do you think it CR> could be the reason whyhe was not able to read my message ? Yes. If he has an old "Compuserve Classic" account, Compuserve will translate incoming internet e-mail into its own internal message format, and it doesn't handle things like attachments and encryption very well. Just send him a plain message without any unnecessary thrills like PGP, and it should work fine. I also have an old account like that, but I use POP3 to retrieve the mail from Compuserve's servers. That bypasses the translation process. Your correspondent may want to do the same. Re: Check default mail client at startup
Hallo Ben, > But TB still prompts me to set it up as the default mail client > everytime I load it up, even if I load it up, click 'Yes', shut down > and then load up again! are you running WinNT, Win2K or WinXP as a limited user, i.e. without admin privileges? In these cases The Bat has not enough privileges to change the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Even if you try to change these settings by the IE it won't be saved. The easiest way is to start IE as an admin and set The Bat as the default mail client (at least this works over here on WinXP). Another way: In addition to my previously posted registry keys you should also import (don't forget to insert your local path ;-) Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto] @="URL:MailTo-Protokoll" "EditFlags"=hex:02,00,00,00 "URL Protocol"="" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto\DefaultIcon] @="E:\\PROGRAMME\\THE BAT!\\THEBAT.EXE,0" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto\shell] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto\shell\open] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto\shell\open\command] @="\"E:\\PROGRAMME\\THE BAT!\\THEBAT.EXE\" %1" Maybe some professionals will be reading this mail so I've a question, too: I've replaced HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE by HKEY_CURRENT_USER in this case and in my previously posted mail, so even as a non admin user I've the possibility to add these keys to the registry. It worked fine: The Bat was listed as the standard E-Mail client in the start menu (WinXP feature) and it was used everytime I clicked a mailto link in IE. Unfortunately, The Bat still asked to be registered as the standard client. Maybe because it looks explicitly under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE? So every user on the same machine would be using the same standard mail client. Wouldn't it be better if The Bat used HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE? -- Regards, Patrick Current Ver: 1.60q FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/
