For both BCCing and test mails to myself. I don't like auto complete
turned on. It's much easier to simply type 'me'. I also don't agree
that auto completion is faster that AB search. The former will find
every address - even those only used once. AB search only finds those
in the AB. So typing john= will usually get the right address
faster than type john and waiting for completion, then searching
through all the matches.

I know auto complete can be restricted, but got the impression that
you don't restrict it.

For a reference here's the command to compress my main mail store with
7z and zip (redirection for 4nt):

7zn u -ms=off -up0q0 -r %bu\Gild * >nul 2>> %bu\out

I see you said "not much change," but 20 seconds vs 10 minutes is only
about 3% the time for an update. Since my biggest folder files change
with only a little new mail, I'm running about 30-40% of the time for
a "from scratch" compression using 7z.

problem sharing messages with multiple bat installations

2003-07-16 Thread Mike J. Vincelette
I have two installations of theBat using the same account on an IMAP
server. I leave certain messages on the server from work so that I can
download them later from home.

Some of the messages I access from location A do not download when I
check mail later at location B. The messages exist on the server
(i.e,. I can get at them using the Mail Dispatcher), but I think the
appropriate behavior would be:

1) When checked from A, download the message and mark it as "read" on
the server.

2) When checked from location B, download it from the server and mark
it as "read" locally (since it was already downloaded from location
A).

It seems to be doing 1, but not 2. (Oddly, it seems to do 2
*sometimes*, but I need to confirm this.) Shouldn't the mail be
downloaded from location B even after it has been accessed from
location A as long as it is still on the server?

Is this an issue, or do I misunderstand the correct behavior under
these circumstances?

Thanks Ricardo, this was exactly what I was looking for. Is there any
way to convince The Bat! to perform this way by default? To me, it
doesn't really make sense to maintain a group of invisible messages in
the inbox on the server -- if one doesn't want them sitting in their
inbox, the messages should be moved to a local folder or deleted, no?

As I said in that same email:

,---

The above, of course, assumes it's placed near the bottom of your

T> I have a question to those who have their own address in their

My reasons are pretty simple. I have many mail groups - tennis
team, swim team board, basketball board, school parents, etc.
(Hmmm. There's a theme there...)

Reason 1:
If I send a mail to one of these groups - say the basketball
executive board, I want to get it as well since I save related
messages in a separate folder.

Reason 2:
The e-mail addresses in these groups are shared to others. I
don't want to have to remember to add myself to the list when I
send it out to the others that want the e-mails in that group.

I use the member of groups feature in the AB heavily. Right now,
I have about 15 groups and include myself as a member of about 10
of them. Most of the ones that I don't are pretty much dead
groups that I don't use any more and leave out there for
posterity. (Computers are really awful for packrats!)

Reason 3:
Including myself in the group also makes it easy to confirm that
I've included everyone. I.e. 8 kids on the basketball team,
including my son, there should be 8 e-mail addresses in the list.
If I've only got 7, I've forgotten a family.

Again, YMMV. This has worked well for me for years.

Different behaviour between one installation and the other whenmaking APOP

2003-07-16 Thread Martin Schneider
Hello,

I encounter a strange behaviour. I have installed "The Bat" on two
machines. On one machine it is possible to fetch mails per APOP. On
the other machine not anymore. Some days ago I could, but suddenly it
didn't work. So I created a new account on another machine - and there
it works. The configuration (at least in the dialog boxes) are the
same.

What could be the reason that I get back the error message "Auth
Error"? Even a new installation on that machine didn't help.

Are there registry entries I can check and change?

Simple POP works perfectly on both machines. The passwords really
are set correctly.

I am really without any idea anymore.

Thanks for your help.

Well I'll have to back and look at your settings to see if I can set
something up to track. It would be interesting.

Most of my volume of storage comes from only a few lists. TB lists are
one group. I keep all of them for a resource because I occasionally go
back to look for answers. This is the main reason why I think the
ability to save a search would be beneficial. IIRC it saves the last 9,
but if your looking a lot 9 doesn't get you to far. Others on the list
use another app that IIRC is Mail Bag. Maybe it is a matter of principle
but my old email program VA could save searches, and I like to stay in
the same application.

Anyhow on this P4 2.4 Ghz 500MB Ram PC I ran a manual test on time the
other day with not much change in the mail base. It took a little over
20 seconds to 500 + MB. When I do the 500 + MB from scratch it is about
10 minutes using 7z format.

Thanks for the info.

The "used" space is about 75 meg. Compressed is about 15 meg. There
are 827 files. On my 800 mhz P-III it updates in about 80 seconds.

The builtin TB backup takes about 30 seconds to manually prepare and
about 16 seconds to execute. So the total time is about 92 seconds
(beta and gild).

For relative speed testing, I did a new compression on my gild mail
store (a little over 31 meg). Below are the commands used, the
elapsed time in seconds and the compressed size (mb):

7zn a -r \t1 * 74.85 4.90
7zn a -r -tzip \t2 * 37.36 6.73
zip -r \t3 * 10.64 6.85
zip -r1 \t3 * 5.54 8.20

On the full TB backup (not update), 7zn took 171.74 seconds (14.66
meg). Zip took 27.90 seconds (19.11 meg) and Zip with -1 (fast) took
14.09 seconds (22.04 meg)

As you can see, 7z doesn't come close to zip in speed. On my
relatively slow machine (with nearly 100 gig free disk space), I'm
considering switching back to zip with the -1 option for TB backups.

I wasn't trying to get a POPFile/SpamPal battle going.

What I'm trying to do is learn what the logic/algorithm is that
TB! uses for the Known filter. If that could be answered, I'd
appreciate it.

Agreed. However, since July 10, 2003 I've received 473 e-mails
classified as spam. I do review them before deleting them, but
it's easy to lose one in the manual review effort. When you have
an e-mail like mine that has been around on Usenet & the Internet
since 1994 every spam list in the world has me on their list.

So, reeling this back around to TB!, that is my reason for
putting the Known filter first.

I don't mind the leaking per se; it's not understanding the
reason for the leak that is keeping me awake nights. :) There are
spams that are being correctly identified as spam by POPFile, but
TB!'s Known filter is putting them in my Known folder. If I knew
what the logic/algorithm for the Known filter, I'd be better able
to debug the issue.

Of course, you don't have. Just made this file in:

and put that line in it.

We just received a feedback: she is with Germany's biggest ISP
T-Online and had activated their "myticker" news ticker. She turned it
off, and the tooltips in TB reappeared. Weird enough.

I have a feeling that such functionality will be a long time if ever in
coming.

XRay does offer a solution that may help you. You can get it here:

http://www.xrayapp.com/

The online help isn't as detailed as the readme file that comes with the
install. Here's an excerpt from the readme:

,- [ ]
| X-Ray could automatically select SMTP-server from a specified list
| accordingly to current IP address. It is necessary to create a record
| for every IP-range with values:
|
| *  Server: SMTP server, which should be used for given provider;
| * Network & Subnet mask: definition of IP-range of the given provider.
`-

Getting the IP range isn't so bad. You can take your current IP and do a
lookup on it. Usually the port range is given as part of the
information. So when you connect to a particular ISP, XRay will know
which one based on your current IP and automatically use the appropriate
SMTP server.

Suggestion

2003-07-16 Thread Ciprian Trofin
High All, :)

I don't know if this is the best place to suggest smth., but here it
goes: I'm on dial up, with multiple ISPs. Each ISP allows SMTP access
but in a different way: some allows external SMTP server access while
some allows only the use of their SMTP server.

Now my suggestion: can The Bat! be modified to accept a list of SMTP
servers for each account? If one fails, the program will automatically
use the next and I won't have to change my SMTP settings each time I
use a different dial-up ISP.

Hi MAU,
This is a known bug. It also applies to flags.
It looks like the data from the msg is stored in a buffer and then
compared to the filter condition.
If there is an action, like set a flag/colour group. This isnĀ“t done
after al filtering on this msg has been done.

It is logged as an official bug.

Well ... that sounds like a qmail error message to me and makes me
think: your webhoster uses and runs an imperfectly patched and/or set up
qmail installation.
The "Sorry, that domain ..." message is normal: you don't have relaying
privileges w/o authentication. You could try if 'POP-before-SMTP' is
set up (chances are your webhoster uses vpopmail on top of qmail and if
not disabled "roaming users" access by POP-b4-SMTP is active).
Additionally you can write a message to webhosters support about the
'child crashed' error, for whatever reason the password checker don't
like either your authentication data (it might run with wrong
permissions) or it get's these data feeded in the wrong format.

You can give them a hint about how to figure out the source of your
problem: they should attach a 'strace' (if running Linux) or 'truss' (if
running *BSD) to the password checker to figure out what makes the
"child crash". A medium to good administrator should have figured out
the reason within a short amount of time then and be able to take
necessary actions for correcting the misbehavior.
