I'm just wondering whether or not Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition

To put it differently: I'm sure many of you use TB with an anti-virus
plug in. Do you need to close and restart TB after updating the virus
definitions? It used to be that AVG would warn me that TB was running
(with the plug in) when I would update it and that I should restart TB.
That hasn't happened for some months now (after an update). Does anyone
know if that is still necessary generally, and for AVG in particular?

It would have been more than annoyance for me, if the mail from
RiskFreeMail had arrived in my Inbox before I read about the problem
in Marck's first post about it.

The wording would have made me think tbudl's moderators had put me on
hold. Depending on whether that caught me in a brave or a cowardly
mood, I might have spent a sleepless night before finally asking the
moderators what I had done wrong, to have my post regarded as
potential junk.

Forewarned, I put the horrid thing in its own junk folder temporarily,
as I watched the developments here, and eventually I had the pleasure
of seeing from Leif that everything has turned out well and the
problem is taken care of.

Thanks for the background information. I'm not a fan of the C/R
philosophy. It seems much too annoying when controlling spam can
simply be resolved by having an efficient spam filtering system. Why
place the burden of controlling one's spam on their contacts? The few
people who I've attempted to e-mail who use this method I give up on.

After reading your message, the C/R methodology appears even more
annoying than I initially thought. The fact that RiskFreeMail is
unresponsive to complaints is particularly troublesome. I can just
envision flocks of the bored setting up temporary accounts with the
sole purpose of annoying list users and moderators.

I'm glad your probes found the culprit and hope there's a way to
prevent this type of problem from surfacing again.

Does that really matter especially since you're not really aware of
just what others here may or may not need to backup? This seems to be
the crux of the misunderstanding. The discussion has been about
backing up TB! and nothing else.

Many get by without the 'fancy' backing up that you do because they
don't have the same backup requirements as you do. A couple of those
batch scripts will therefore work just fine and will not amount to a
headache. Take my wife for example. I just backup TB! and her
Documents directory daily to a 750MB zip. Do I need Second Copy for
that. NO! A single batch script, with a few lines of text run with the
system scheduler works just fine, thanks. :) It's all a matter of
needs. What's fine for one, is a hassle for the other.

I think I'm finished here since this is becoming unproductive.

KC> can you point me in the right direction?

A user subscribed using the RiskFreeMail.com Challenge/Response
system. Either the system is incapable of, or the user didn't properly
configure it to exclude list traffic from its challenges.

Basically what happened is when anyone posted to TBUDL, this user's
C/R system sent them an e-mail requesting them to respond to the
challenge so that their mail would be allowed to this user's inbox. I
liken it to people who post to lists with the Reading Confirmation
Flag set.

At any rate the problem with this particular system is that it doesn't
tell you who the real subscriber is, and even though I did respond to
the challenge, I was unable to determine who the user was, and hence
unable to tell them that their C/R system was causing so much grief.

E-mails to RiskFreeMail.com went unanswered / ignored, so our only
alternative was to devise a probe system that allowed us to uniquely
identify who that subscriber was so we could unsubscribe them.

It took a few probes as their system didn't respond to the first set
of probes, which we assumed to be a SPAM blocking feature on their end
because the user's e-mail address was identified in the subject line.
We took a look at the methodology and came up with another method to
uniquely identify them via an ID number buried in a rather innocuous
subject line. This was the methodology we used to send out the last
probe.

The probes did what they were designed to do in that it did reveal who
the user ultimately was which we unsubscribed.

I apologize for the number of probes as we had to work some kinks out
of the PHP code and MySQL database.

Again, thanks for everyone's patience. We'll keep this tool on hand
(now that the bugs are worked out) and use it ever so sparingly if a
RiskFreeMail.com user ever subscribes again.

As far as I know all such messages have a From address similar to this:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. So, you can try a Selective Download
filter for:

On rule tab:
Detect by: Originator
Signal string: @riskfreemail.com

On Advanced tab:
Action: Kill
Detection method: Any string match

If that doesn't do it you can perhaps try [EMAIL PROTECTED] (including
the asterisk) as signal string and selecting Match any string as regular
expression.

I haven't tried it but it should work.

Yes, but I don't just backup TB. I backup all my important data:
databases, documents, web pages, etc., etc. And what I actually do is
mirroring on a different computer. I mirror my desktop in my server and
my server in my desktop, and I can also mirror to and from my laptop
when I have to travel.

So, I have a total of 15 Profiles some of which run automatically
several times a day (perhaps with different schedules) and some manually
or only at night. Why do I do this? Because computers break sometimes. If
one morning I come to my desktop and it won't run, I can get on my
server and start TB and it will just work with the last mirrored message
base. Same if the server fails, I can just start my Mercury/32 MTA in my
desktop and change a setting in my router and server is back on the air.
Etc, etc, etc. Do you want me to do all of that with BAT scripts? No
thanks :)

It sounds like he's running a v1.xx flavour of TB!. The registration
of those versions do involve the use of a passphrase that is given in

he'll need to contact Ritlabs sales department where for a small fee,

It is the only thing. v1 and v2 keys are *not* interchangeable. You

Registration question

2004-05-18 Thread Nick OHare
Hi All,

After many years of pitching the Bat! I finally convinced a friend to
switch over to the Bat! (that makes a total of 5 happy converts!).
However he called me with a problem last night regarding registering
his copy of the Bat! that I couldn't help him with.

It's been years since I went through the registration process and
obviously forgot one of the steps. The email he received clearly
shows the Bat! key and the Bat! key checksum but he's confused as
what the Key password is. He was asked to define a password when
paying for registration, but entering that password didn't have the
desired effect. Is there another password that he should have
received?

The only other thing I can think may be complicating this is that I
downloaded and set up the Bat! v. 1.62 on his machine and he bought a
license for v.2

As always, thank you for any suggestions and tips.

It's been quite a while since I subscribed and I can't remember if a
confirmation message requiring a response is sent when subscribing to
TBUDL. Could this be a way to stop new registrations from RFM? Also, a
friendly note on the subscriptions page? Moreover, isn't there something
you can do with Mailman? Just thinking out loud...

But the name in the challenge/response message is not that of the RFM
user... it's the name of the person you reply to when sending a message
to the list. Hopefully, the mods will have an idea of the culprits soon
following the work Leif started over the weekend. I wonder how they will
contact them? ;-)

Following Marck's suggestion I've started submitting these messages to
SpamCop using the the filters in the TB! library:

Oh, another one's just come in... From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

sorted!

I wonder if these people are sitting in front of their PCs wondering why
there are no messages coming from TBUDL? I presume that each
challenge/response message I receive is for a different RFM user. Is it
possible that these are new users? If so, could some text be added to
http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html ?

Now that's totally risk free!

Let me hypothesise that their filter looks whether the From address
and where them is actually sent from match. This would not be the case
with TBUDL postings, as they are sent from the list server and the
From address from the actual poster. So, Leif's message might have
been received by the culprit, but he didn't know what this was about
and just trashed it.

A strategy would be to send a message to each member which look like
they are postings, wait for an appropriate amount of time, and if no
challenge comes, continue with the next member. Would take very long
though...

My first from RiskFreeMail arrived this morning. Its subject line was
"E-mail verification." The body said it had put my post to tbudl on
the subject "Re: Tracking down a problem" on hold. Evidently
RiskFreeMail has a rotating set of messages.

My first inclination was to delete it on the server unread, when I saw
it in the Dispatcher. But since it was my very first encounter with
the horrid problem, I decided to have a look.

In the future I'll just uncheck receive and check delete in Mail
Dispatcher when I see this RFM in the "From:" field--unless they get
too numerous, in which case I'll make an Address Book template filter.
Though I hate to give these people a place in my AB!

I guess I'd go for the return path and only the list address, but
that's a matter of taste.

No. It wouldn't do you any good either. In order to scan the body for
a string, the body has to be downloaded. It isn't really worth your
effort to download the body in order to decide whether you want to
download it. ;-)
Apart from that, since my mail server is local on my LAN, I couldn't
care less whether TB downloads the message or not. So I'm not what
you'd a call an expert on the dispatcher.

Where are the PGP files?

2004-05-18 Thread graffito studios

Hi all,
I just joined this forum, and and am fairly new to the Bat, and I
think it's a really great program. I'm using version 2.10.03.

I installed it on my computer, and then I bought a new box - networked
the two together. I have the Bat installed on both, but I really just
want to use it on the new one. I successfully transferred my mailboxes
over, but I find that the PGP info that I had on the old one isn't on
the new one. I had my own keys set up, and some from friends. I don't
really want to generate new keys, and have to (re)collect the ones from my
friends.

Where does the PGP info reside, and how do I transfer it over?

Thanks

I just received a message with another member's name. To create an
"ordinary" filter is easy, but I'd like if I could create one which
deletes from server. For the ordinary one I use "return path" line in
'kludges' and '"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" with a subject' part (the

Since it is combination of 'kludge' and 'body' text, I cannot see the
