What is the meaning of "start" and "duration" options in "Scheduled tasks"?
Do they apply when the only action is creating / sending messages ?

I can imagine what "start" does, but what about duration ?

Re: [St's TB Annoyances] thebat.IPC

2004-08-26 Thread St - Musaic.Net

  Alexander S. Kunz:
> AFAIK you're running TB permanently (and at very short poll intervalls).

True - although 30 seconds isn't what I would consider to be _very_ short
  intervals. Or?

  Alexander S. Kunz:
> An environment that, as you said some weeks ago, requires you to restart TB
> now and then. You could do that with a scheduled /EXIT when you're in doubt
> if the .IPC file is still interpreted, couldn't you?

Unfortunately, no! /EXIT relies on thebat.IPC - thus if TB ignore reading
thebat.IPC then /EXIT won't work either! If TB had a last resort - like if a
file "force.exit.thebat.doh" exist in the program directory then TB would
  exit.

My applications do have protections against a dead loop as such as the system
will reboot and restart from where TB ignored thebat.IPC. But I feel it is
unacceptable having to reboot every 7-10 minutes. I am trying to tune the shit,
and already I have produced protections of "DOS'ing" TB.

After letting FileMon monitor for a while, it is revealed that TB check
thebat.IPC every 10th seconds. However, each time one is running a second TB
(with or without IPC commands) the primary TB will "sync" up to the secondary
TB. If, for example, TB was checking thebat.IPC at times

  16:03:05
  16:03:15
  16:03:25
  16:03:35

and you start a second TB at 16:03:38, that second TB would have the primary
TB to check thebat.IPC right away - and subsequent checkings of thebat.IPC
would then time to for example

  16:03:49
  16:03:59
  16:04:09
  16:04:19

  and so on.

When it comes to what one can put into the thebat.IPC TB is pretty forgiving,
but apparently commands that isn't supported won't be executed. Put a fake
command (ie. /DOH) into thebat.IPC and TB will read and process the file - but
nothing will happen as a result of that /DOH command. I tried three methods
to have TB process IPC-commends. After some testing, I fortunately found a
way of doing it and that I have found to be stable with my software - even at
  a pretty short poll intervals.

The most stable method of executing IPC-commands is to write the commands into
a batch file. A batch file is described in the Help-file:

"If you need to execute a lot of commands many times, the /BATCH command is a
life saver. This command allows the execution of multiple commands defined in
a text file; each command being placed in one line."

I find that doing so makes running IPC-commands stable. I have tested for some
days now, and it is stable - TB hasn't failed once!

Just for the record, the following two methods are totally unstable and I can
  not recommend them:

  1) Sending each command directly from th command line - like
 16:05:00 - "C:\Program Files\The Bat!\TheBat.EXE /MAILU="[snip]
 16:05:03 - "C:\Program Files\The Bat!\TheBat.EXE /SEND*"
etc. (commands "/MAILU" and "/SEND" are for the example only.

TB will pretty soon (in minutes) stop checking thebat.IPC - useless! It do
seems TB is choked, but the above may even happen even though the intervals
are longer than 30 seconds - maybe even after minutes between each action!
So there is some condition that makes TB stop checking thebat.IPC.

  2) Update/composing thebat.IPC directly at a time TB is not checking it - like
 16:05:00 - TB is polling thebat.IPC
 16:05:05 - writing IPC-commands to thebat.IPC
 16:05:10 - TB is polling thebat.IPC

Again, TB will pretty soon (in minutes) stop checking thebat.IPC. One should
assume it would be safe to write to the thebat.IPC as TB is not occupying it.
Yet, this method is proven just as unstable as with the first method - and
 again it's useless!

I have no idea why the latter two methods eventually fail. Stick to writing to
a secondary batch file (thebat.TXT etc.) point to it from the command line.

As for /EXIT that fails when TB fails to check thebat.IPC:

  Alexander S. Kunz:
> ** You. Do. Not. Need. The. IPC. File. **

You do! /EXIT won't work when TB stops checking thebat.IPC - because (as you
later found out): "TB itself writes the .IPC file when you access it via the
commandline?!?". Yes, it does - I have always said that (or at least implied
it strongly)! :) It was crucial in the discussion and is a major reason for
topic of "[St's TB Annoyances] thebat.IPC".

BTW - thru the batch file method I hav been able to produce a stable fix for
the problem I outlined in "[St's TB Annoyances] Periodical Checking (of mail)".

Hello Maggie,

Did you release Alt and Space before hitting m? Are you using an
English system? The key you push after Alt+Space will vary (I assume)
based on your locale.

Make sure TheBat is the active application. Pressing Alt+Space
will bring up an a context menu (pop-up menu) that will also be
off-screen. Then pressing the M will select "Move" on the pop-up menu.

Hit an arrow key (I prefer the left) which will start moving the
window, but then you can simply move your mouse and use the mouse to
relocate the dialog. I find the mouse works much faster since the
mouse cursor is locked to the viewable area of your desktop it'll snap
the window into view really quickly. Just remember you must hit an
arrow key before the mouse will move the window, otherwise the mouse
will only move the cursor.

Another way of doing it is to simply right-click on the Task bar (not
system tray) entry (if you haven't turned it off) and selecting "Move"
from there. Once you've selected move you can use the arrows and then
the mouse to move the window someplace viewable.

I hope that helps..

  Changed to 48 hrs.

  Stats:

Spam Stats, last 48 hours (BayesIt! 0.5.11)
Total Spam Emails: 69
Total Clean Emails: 286
BayesIT guessed right 99.478261% of the time

Upon experimenting, it isn't the length, but instead the inclusion of
special characters. Once you insert a character like !, `, %, $, #, ^, +,

I had this problem when I upgraded TB! and had to "retrain" BayesIt!

Yes, it's on the task bar. I pressed Alt + Space then m and then TB!
fetched mail. I also tried holding Alt + Space + Shift + M while using
the left arrow, and nothing happened. Not working. I'm on a laptop, so
maybe it's the differences in keyboards? I'd love to be able to get
your idea to work!

I figured out what is broken. I keep The Bat! on screen #2 (of 3
displays) which are arranged as [2][1][3]. That makes the horizontal
screen coordinates NEGATIVE on the screen where TheBat! is living and
any attempt at sizing with negative numbers is being slammed to zero
by TheBat!.

If I run TheBat! on screen #1 (or screen #3), column sizing/moving
works correctly. Both of those screens have POSITIVE horizontal
coordinates.

I posted a message about multiple monitors, too, and now I see that
this is related to that issue.

True. My guess is that there is a limit to the length before the @

Yes. This has happened with me too. While I normally don't put The

It's as y'all say, TB! always comes up on the main monitor. I have
another program which actually lives on the 2nd monitor, but that can
be a big problem, too! Sometimes when I unplug and go portable I
forget to reposition that program to the primary monitor. When that
happens, trying to access it becomes impossible. It's loaded, but
invisible - residing on the phantom number two monitor.

Thanks for the idea, will do.

FWIW, I found a possible work around, too. I think that
unchecking the 'Check mailbox at startup' option in the
account settings might give the local mail server/SPAM

Multiple Displays

2004-08-26 Thread nurbles
I'm using Windows 2000's built-in support for multiple
monitors (with 1 AGP and 2 PCI cards). I use monitor
#1 for active work and I keep TheBat! maximized on
monitor #2.

Strangely, TheBat! remembers the correct screen coordinates
between boots, unfortunately, it always translates them to
monitor #1, so on every boot I must manually restore it, move
it to monitor #2, then maximize it again.

While working on programs of my own, I noticed that the
horizontal coords on monitor #2 are all negative because
it is positioned to the LEFT of monitor #1. I suspect
that TheBat! is doing what I once did, and treating those
as errors and 'correcting' them to their positive
equivalents.

It would be so nice if either was aware of multiple screens
or simple used what it got...

I have the exact same issue with TB hanging once in a while - and much
worse that you cannot "Delete task" in the Connection Centre. If you hit
"Abort All", TB will stop checking mail and you need to restart to get
TB working again.

I have CCed this to the beta list as I am running the latest beta.

Checking Mail

2004-08-26 Thread nurbles
I've been successfully using TheBat! with POPFile to tag
SPAM for about a year now. I have both programs scheduled
to start automatically when my machine boots (and auto logs
in). Unfortunately, most of the time, TheBat! starts
checking for new mail before POPFile is loaded (or ready?)
and then hangs FOREVER.

That is TheBat!'s 'checking mail' task that is hung. I
cannot exit TheBat!, because a task is active. It refuses
to abort the task, despite offering that as an option. I
can only use the Windows Task Manager to KILL the program
entirely. When I restart it after POPFile is running, it
works just fine.

The problem started with my upgrade to TheBat! 2.12.00
The earlier versions seemed to just time out the first mail
check if it ran before POPFile, then later tried again, as
it should be. The current one may not be hung, but if not,
I cannot guess why it cannot be aborted or why the timeout
would be over two days (it rebooted once right after work
on Friday and was still hung Monday morning).

FWIW:

Changing column settings

2004-08-26 Thread nurbles
The the last couple versions of The Bat! (I'm at 2.12.00
right now) I've had a problem changing column widths and
positions in the message list pane (come to think of it,
I haven't tried the folder pane...oops! Now I have no
visible 'unread' column and I cannot get it back!).

When I click on the dividing/sizing line between columns,
the column to the left of the line instantly goes to a
width of ZERO and stays that way until I use the Setup
Columns dialog to type in a bigger size. In the folder
list, there does not appear to be any Setup Folder dialog,
so my 'unread' column is now lost to me.

The same thing happens if I inadvertently drag a column to
a new position -- it moves, but the size becomes zero.
And because it seems that a drag starts with a ONE PIXEL
mouse move, that is prone to happen even when I intend to
only click a new sort order.

FWIW:

  The Bat! 2.12.00
  Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

Oh, and this used to work fine in older versions.

It is expected that some applications will stop working on SP2. The
reason is that SP2 is closing some doors for backwards compatibility
out-of-the-box. Those sections of code for backwards compatibility
was a security risk. But, if I'm not mistaken you can still run those
applications by using the application compatibility settings, and that
is supposed to make those applications run in their own little
environment without breaching the security of the system. And another
but, some applications might not run at all. Most of those
applications are DOS and Win9x apps.

I'll stop here, because this is OT.

What defines a mailto?

2004-08-26 Thread Allister Jenks
Hello TBUDLers,

Any idea why TB! does not recognise the following as a mailto: ?

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've changed the 1's and the alphabet part to disguise the real address
(it's a mailing list confirmation). The = sign seems to replace the @
in my address, and may be the problem?
