Help with reinstall of version 3.80.06
Hello, List. I am having to post this message using Gmail because the other day my computer shut down unexpectedly just as The Bat!'s Connection Center was in the process of checking mail. When I rebooted, The Bat! would not open because something was corrupted. I was using OFTE at the time. No problem, I thought, I do have a backup, even if it is dated 6/17/06, so I'll simply uninstall and reinstall the program and then restore from the backup. Unfortunately, there was a problem. I used Add/Remove programs (WinXP Pro, with SP2) to remove The Bat!. That worked. I used the MSI of The Bat! version 3.80.06 I had downloaded earlier when I updated to that version and upon starting it, I was prompted for my password which I entered as before. However at that point the program would not finish loading. I got the splash screen and it went away and the program drew on the screen but never completed the loading the menus, etc. It yielded a continuous series of Access Violations. I had to close it with the Task Manager. So I again remove it with Add/Remove Programs. I downloaded a new copy of version 3.80.06 from the Ritlabs site and installed that. Again, it appeared to install. However, after entering my password, which was accepted by the way, when I try to start it up, I still get the AVs just after the splash screen goes away. I can't get into The Bat! so that I can restore from backup. *And* because I can't get in, the clock is ticking on my 30 day trial. So I need some guidance as to what to do in order to get back into The Bat! so I can restore my registered version and begin again using it. (Fortunately, I still have a copy of my registration message stored in Gmail that I can reimport to get it reregistered, if I can get the program to load.) Thanks for any advice you have to offer. (Let's hope I can get the cut mark to work from this Gmail account.) -- Regards, Perry Nelson Current version is 3.80.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Alternatively, you could rename the folder itself--something like Old The Bat! . Then do a completely fresh MSI install, and after that--if it will load--start moving the files from Old The Bat! . For what it's worth, the OFTE installation of The Bat! doesn't have a mail directory under C:\Program Files\The Bat!. Instead there is a folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Perry Nelson\Application Data called The Bat! Pwd where the folder and message base is located. When I renamed that folder and tried to open The Bat!, I got an error message saying, Cannot open file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Perry Nelson\Application Data\The Bat! Pwd\ikey.id.' The system cannot find the path specified. But at least doing that didn't produce cascading AVs. Renaming thebat.exe to old_thebat.exe and running the repair didn't work either. Same cascading AVs. This situation would lead me to offer a word of caution to potential users of the OFTE option. If you have a situation such as I do, you have no way to recover your messages, since even if you have a backup, it is useless because it is encrypted. Another down side of OFTE is that you can't move folders across account boundaries in your message base. (That bug has already been logged by the way.) What would be nice is for Ritlabs to produce a decryption tool for a backed up file that could be used outside of The Bat! if you know the password for the encrypted backup file. (Goes without saying that TB! should be closed whenever you are renaming or moving files and/or folders manually.) Thanks for the warning, but since I can't get it to open, any change I make will *have* to be when it's closed. Keep us posted, please! Consider yourselves posted. Just an idea. When you uninstalled TB, did you manually check (in Explorer) that no files were left? Maybe one of the configuration files remained on disk, and it is corrupted and part of the problem. Or maybe its one of the messagebase files thats corrupted. IIRC the installer has an option to leave the files on disk, or delete them when uninstalling, if you left the files TB is running into a corrupted encrypted messagebase file and can't cope with it. I'd make sure that really *everything* is gone after the uninstall (by manually checking the program files directory and your user profile directory where the messagebases are) and try again with a fresh install then. Oh, and copy the existing messagebase files away if they're still on disk. If you have success with the new installation, you can try to move the original messagebase files back (while TB is not running - and make sure to delete the indexfiles so that TB can rebuild them). If its a corrupted msgbase file, maybe you can locate it that way. It would be good to keep it then and, if privacy permits it, maybe send it to Ritlabs so that they can try to reproduce the problem (and avoid it in the future). Alexander, I'm really happy to see you putting your good mind to Perry's problem! Don't miss that his message base is encrypted through OTFE. I think, in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] , he gives a clue that the problem is a corrupted message base. Because, with the folder containing Mail renamed, he didn't get the cascading AVs when he tried to launch. Or is my thinking on that faulty? I'm quoting what Perry said, below: P For what it's worth, the OFTE installation of The Bat! doesn't have a P mail directory under C:\Program Files\The Bat!. Instead there is a P folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Perry Nelson\Application Data P called The Bat! Pwd where the folder and message base is located. The system cannot find P the path specified. But at least doing that didn't produce cascading AVs. Perry still has the password. But he can't get TB! to launch, thereby decrypting the mails. Well, you probably already did understand all this. But Perry's difficulty has wider implications, for other TB! users, as both you and he noted. So I hope either you or another of the subscribers here who have programming skills will have some idea of how he can access those encrypted mails. -- Best regards, Mary The Bat! 3.81.14 Beta on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Service Pack 2 Current version is 3.80.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Although I chose the option *not* to keep any files on the disk, to my amazement, I find that the message base folder I mentioned earlier, The Bat! Pwd, is still there in all its glory. And under C:\Program Files\ there are *two* The Bat! folders, one of them has the name The Bat!(2). See this screenshot. http://img398.imageshack.us/my.php?image=appdataqw3.png Here is a screenshot of the contents of the folder named The Bat!: http://img59.imageshack.us/my.php?image=folderthebatiw1.png This may be significant as you look at these screenshots. I upgraded to the Pro version on 12/23/2005. This is a screenshot of the folder named The Bat!(2): http://img69.imageshack.us/my.php?image=folderthebatencryptedah6.png This screenshot shows one of the accounts in my encrypted installation folder: http://img85.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tildeinextensionab3.png Here is a screenshot of the mail folder of my encrypted installation. Notice the presence of the ikey.id file, highlighted in yellow. http://img241.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thebatpwdfq2.png I'm sure all of that is more than you wanted to know, but maybe it will offer some clues.. I'd make sure that really *everything* is gone after the uninstall (by manually checking the program files directory and your user profile directory where the messagebases are) and try again with a fresh install then. As you can see, even though I specified NOT to retain any files, a whole lot is left. HTH And I hope these screenshots give you some information about what may be going on and suggests the next strategy. Let me ask if anyone thinks that trying an install that is NOT in the default locations would help. Sorry for the delay in replying to your message, Alexander, but I was away from my computer for several hours this afternoon and evening. Thanks for all your help. -- Regards, Perry Current version is 3.80.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: Spyware/trojan targets TB!
Charlene Ferrara @ 2006-8-08 11:39:42 AM Spyware/trojan targets TB! mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] RuSpy.A is a Trojan that obtains the usernames and passwords from certain programs, such as ICQ, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Outlook, and The Bat! I guess that doesn't affect users of the Pro version, due to the OTFE. Is this right? Probably not. Or, it might prompt you for your OTFE password/token at weird times. -- Chris Using The Bat! v3.80.06 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 2. Accessing a POP3 mailbox. Re: mailserver
Goos @ 2006-8-08 7:27:45 AM mailserver mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] The Bat! is not a RFC-compliant mail server Hmmm.. then I've misunderstood the 'server mode' install option. Think more along the lines of a group mail server. That is, The Bat! acts as a central repository for the e-mail within an organization, but Internal mail is housed elsewhere. Intra-organization can go directly through The Bat! to the other users. However, Internet mail still relies on a third part, like the ISP. -- Chris Using The Bat! v3.80.06 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 2. Accessing a POP3 mailbox.
