Okay. I *think* I understand what you're saying. I'm connected by
broadband to Comcast.net. This happens automatically on boot, although
I also have installed a little "re-set" icon, in case of a failed
connection to Comcast.net. So far have had no need to use that.

My e-mail is running through a domain in Indonesia. It could just be
heavy traffic that was keeping me off--or, it could actually have been
a problem in my TB!. I didn't think to check it out with telnet--but
I've been reminded to do that, now, on this thread. So next time it
happens--although I hope that will be never! :)--I'll run telnet and
tell myself, Don't Panic. :)

Thanks for writing. :)

I see. Well, I'm certainly not far enough along to start playing with

more problems than the CE. :)

Well, that's logical. And of course I couldn't expect TB! to know why,
if the problem is on the other end. Is there a way, technically, for
it to be able to tell me that the problem is TB!'s, if it is? In
future versions, that is?

My ISP is in Indonesia. I could ask about it by e-mail, though, once

As I found. :) But back when I was running v. 161, the problem was
often in TB! itself, although all it would say was "could not connect
to server." But in that version it was an almost daily occurence--the
program would seem to time itself out after being up awhile and a
re-launch or a re-boot would seem to fix it.

Anyway, re-launching and re-booting gave me something to do, like the
prospective father whom a country doctor has told to go down to the
kitchen and boil some water. :)

Yes! Time for another cup. :)

Hello Everyone!

Do any of you know whether a later version than 2.00.6 of The Bat!
provides more information in the log than just the bare line "could
not connect to server"?

I mean, can any version of TB! tell the reason "why," as in, for
instance, quoting the server's response?

In most instances, the Internet browsers are still available to me.
It's just the POP3 and SMTP that are not functioning.

Last night I shut TB! down and re-launched several times to no avail.
Then I tried closing TB! and re-booting the computer. No joy there,
either. After about 3 hours of trying (not continuously, of course), I
gave up and went to bed. As I've already mentioned in two earlier
posts here this morning. :)

If my question is better addressed to tbot, I'll take it there.

TIA for help anyone can offer me. :)

Help for a new user

2004-02-06 Thread Mary R Bull
Hello Everyone!

A new user of The Bat!, who has had an evaluation copy for 6 days, has
been writing to me for help, because I recommended it as the best
e-mail program on Rootsweb's Computers-L.

I ran into problems I couldn't solve for her and recommended tbudl.
She has tried to post to the list--after encouragement from me--and
her very first post was returned, with a subsequent post to me at
tbudl being sent to me by [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It said: "The message's content type was not explicitly allowed"

So I wrote to her and asked if she would like me to try to get her
questions answered. She said, in part (begin copy-and-paste):
__
Hi Mary,
If you can get answers then please do so. I really like lots of things
about the Bat but some things I don't understand or maybe the 'Bat
just does not do what I want. Otherwise I will go back to Eudora or
Pegagus.
Thanks, Kay
--
Regards,
 kGSno
___
end copy-and-paste

Kay wants to know (here is an exact copy-and-paste of her declined
post):
___
This is the 6th day I've used the Bat. I don't understand much tech stuff.
Some of the things I need to do and can't figure out are:

1.Select and copy a message or a part thereof, and paste in my word
processor, MS Word.

2. Copy an email address from this list and paste it in a new
message.

3. When I receive a picture in email, when I forward that email why
doesn't the picture(s) show up in my forwarded message?

4. This day I tried to print a message and never could get it printed.

5. I do not understand when I get a message without an attachment,
there is a tab for "html" and a tab for "text", is there a way to stop
that from happening.

I am not a happy camper, I get too much mail to have to spend most of
my day "trying" to do what needs doing. Kay
__
end copy and paste

If anyone here can help her with any of her 5 queries, she's still
subscribed here, and both of us would be grateful for your answers.

I was referring to myself as a Batty Newbie, who a couple of years ago
could have used a screenshot. Not to you.

However, aren't you new to this list? If so, as a fellow-subscriber,
let me say welcome.

If I've missed something, and you're not a newcomer, please forgive my
mistake.

It is true that difficulty getting used to the signature delimiter
(cut-mark) is something that seems to happen quite a bit with new
subscribers to tbudl. I've watched these kinds of discussions quite
often over the months that I've been here.

Anyway, let me say again that I am pleased to become acquainted with
you, even in a cut-mark discussion. :)

I accomplished that, of course, with a manual highlight-and-copy. Your
cut-mark worked perfectly, Leif.

And your patience here in explaining reminds me of my early first days
posting to tbudl--now going on 2 years ago. It is sometimes very hard
for a Batty Newbie to "get it." :)

Maybe a screenshot in the Help file, like the one for the Mail

You're welcome. :)

JS> ["]Shall we take this to tbot without being told to, Jean?["]
JS> Are you suggesting that this question is better for tbot than for tbuld?

Yes, I really think it is. Are you subscribed there? If not, here's
the "mail to:" address for subscribing:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

In addition, I've included a "Reply to:" address in my headers, to make it
easy for you to Reply to this e-mail on tbot rather than on tbudl.

Of course, it's possible that the moderators would not regard this
conversation as off-topic for tbudl. Sometimes my mind--out of being
wary of transgressing :) --interprets tbudl's rules more strictly than
the moderators do. :)

Also, Miguel is not subscribed there--he doesn't have time for that
extra list. So, since you were originally Replying to a MAU (Miguel)
posting, it was entirely appropriate for you to ask your questions for
the first time on this list, where the expressions that were puzzling
you were being used. I just thought that now, we might move it to
tbot. In case there were some more expressions that you wanted to have
explained.

All the best to you, Jean. :)

M>> Have a nice weekend ;-)

JS> On Sunday i am trying to improve my english.
JS> I need help.

Since Miguel hasn't answered yet, nor so far anyone else that I see on
my tbudl folder, I'll give it a try. I live in the U.S., born in
Texas, now residing in Tennessee. I've been with TB! for going on two
years now. One of the most wonderful things to me about the mailing
lists are the messages coming from people whose native language is not
my own. I've been learning so very much from all of you.

So, I want to try to help on this.

JS> I am not sure to understand exactly some sentences:

JS> I kinda like my Bat.. The thread's title

It's a sort of humor. "Kinda" means "sort of" or "somewhat." It's an
understatement. What's really meant is "I like my e-mail client, *The
Bat!* very, very, very much, in spite of its few things that need
fixing."

JS> I don't suppose you'd consider knocking up a little 'how to' document
JS> would you?

Roughly translated, this means: I don't suppose you would want to
write a message that explains how to do this, would you?

JS> Nah! Chickened out

"Chickened out" is a slang expression, used in a derisive tone of
voice. It means that the recipient who is accused of "chickening out"
has become scared of doing a particular thing, or has seen the
particular thing as too difficult, and so has changed his mind. He
will now not do what he had said he was going to do.

So, he's basically being called a coward. To be "chicken" is to be
"cowardly."

And, since he said this of himself, he's just indulging in a bit of
humor, perhaps to forestall being teased about deciding not to give up
a whole weekend to learning this new thing.

JS> I'll stick with hovering over CTRL+SHT+DEL thanks

This is a metaphor: his hands are hovering over--meaning, in a
position just above--these keys on the keyboard. It means he'll go on
using them rather than go through the long process of learning a new
(although possibly better) way.

JS> Oh heck, I've just got sucked into the wonders of WindowBlinds

"Oh heck" is a mild euphemism for "Oh hell."

To get "sucked into" something means to have been fooled or lured into
it, against one's better judgment.

"The wonders of WindowBlinds" is a partly ironic expression. He's
fascinated, but it's going to take up so much of his time to learn to
use this program that he's rueful, also.

JS> And

JS> in "I do, but YMMV" What stands YMMV for

YMMV stands for "your mileage may vary." Again, this is a figure of
speech, taken from the automobile industry. It means, in this context,
that "you may not have the same experience which I've had with this."

JS> Thanks for help

My pleasure, if it is truly a help! I'm retired from teaching
elementary school--the last 10 years of my service was with 10-,11-, and
12-year-old youngsters in the sixth grade.

I hope--given this background--that I haven't "talked down" to you.

My undergraduate degree is in English Literature. I love to the point
of passion dealing with words and their backgrounds and meanings. :)

Also, I know this is Off-Topic. Apologies in advance of the inevitable
moderator's reminder. Shall we take this to tbot without being told
to, Jean?

I had been getting this error message from time to time--mostly when
attaching jpegs--about making Outlook the default client. I'd been
handling it by closing the error message window and proceeding on my
way, and that worked for me.

I'm running F-Secure. These "make Outlook your default client"
messages only began a couple of weeks ago and I've had F-Secure since
last November.

Puzzling.

But I went to Options/Preferences/Applications and installed TB! as
the simple MAPI request handler just now. Happened with ease.

I expect to see no more about Outlook on my screen--which application
I understand to be leaky as a sieve to trojans, worms, viruses, and
hackers. :)

Thanks for the detailed path to the MAPI button in TB!, Steve.
