A number of software authors use this model.Rarlab still exists, and release regular updates. And without me paying, paying again, and paying again, and again... To some extent I would agree, but I don't believe that it inevitably leads to nobody valuing what anybody does, rather it makes those with less money in their pockets fight much harder to get the services and 'things' cheaper, so that they can afford them. It's a con sequence of an uneven distribution of wealth, where the least wealthy have grown in massive disporportion, have less financial power to bargain with so strive to drive down prices so that they are not excluded from partipation. I heard someone say that if there weren't poor people then the world would be a better place. The person saying it was a businessman running a factory with over 300 workers who had just gone on strike because of work conditions and low wage complaints. I don't see how that can be the same. > Heck, they want all software to be free and will not pay any money, for > example, for an email client. I think that is a vast oversimplificationand not just necessarily so! A distinction was made very early on between commercial, shareware, freeware, donationware, cardware...blah-ware software. This was necessary because not every software author sat down at their computer to spend inordinate amounts of time tapping away at their keyboards simply because they saw the potential financial rewards ahead. Aside the above, you have everyone from Ahab who is 10, to Desidimona who is 80, with access to a computer, and they, and everyone else, want various softwares to run on their computers, otherwise computers would be useless. The term 'software' obviously covers a huge spectrum, such as Operating Systems, web browsers, email clients, bitmap editors, graph paper printers, automation software, media players, PDF viewers, privacy software, (continue on ad infinitum) etc. Just count the number of programs sitting on your computer and then calculate the cost if every single one of those was a piece of commercial software, with regular, almost yearly pay-for updates, and you realise just how ludicrous this model is. It's a nonsense. "They" don't want all software to be free because "they" are evil, "they" haven't just got deep enough pockets to pay for every bit of software and every update. Even within the so-called developed wealthier countries you have incredibly unequal distribution of wealth, with most of the wealth belonging to the top 7% to 12% of the population. A lot of people within these same countries live on or below subsistence levels, and then you look across the globe to other countries that are even worse off and you see that the 'you-must-pay-for-everything' model of software distrubition is just madness. It does't work, it cannot work. A few hundred pieces of software on one PC is really not an uncommon figure for many people, now calculate a total purchase price, and they a yearly fee to keep every one up to date. Far too many people don't even earn those sort of amounts each month (or even much longer) so my heart does not immediately bleed for software authors who are looking to get rich out of volume distribution and then getting angry at the bad people for not wanting to playinstead of accepting that the whole model is flawed and perhaps the whole idea needs rethinking. S>> I'll remember to tell the altruist that gives up their free time and S>> money that they should desist with their beneficent activities because S>> they should be paid for their troubles, because they are the rules, and S>> fairness demands it. > Exactly. You will not believe how many heated arguments we had, I think > the 90s were the time when users just demanded to get all software and > even online time for free. They thought they had a right to be provided > with free services and software. Again, an oversimplifcation. At those times 'Free' didn't actually mean 'free'. 'Free' hasn't meant gratis for a very long time. The tenner-a-month ISPs in the UK back then (the 90's) advertised their services as unlimited free access for only £10 per month :-/ People were jumping onboard because their telecoms companies were exploiting this new source of revenue from Interent access and phone bills had soared out of control. People were finding themselves with bills for hundreds of pounds a month just for connecting to the Internet to collect email and chat. When there is limited access to a money pot (which is all of the time IOW) 'people' will naturally and fairly be looking for cheaper, if not gratis, solutions for most things, and quite rightly. I support them in their efforts 100%. And it is nothing to do with valuing the efforts of others...not in the slightest. Just because you decide to create something doesn't automatically give you the right to have an income gain from it. I see no reference to it in my account logs. Not a stupid question at all, and I'm glad you asked because there may still be a problem :-/ I first checked the plugin by running a manual AV scan (under Folder/Check for Viruses). This was successful: * Checking finished. Found 0 infected messages out of 9114 checked ones. I then checked my account logs after receiving incoming mail and the correct entries were present. However, I didn't check the account logs after outgoing messages had been sent. TB!'s previous behaviour was to add incoming and outgoing AV check entries to the account log when the AV plugin was configured and the 'Check Incoming mail for viruses' and 'Check outgoing mail for viruses' options were selected under Anti-Virus default settings under preferences. However, since the plugin broke and the latest 'fix' the outgoing check log entries no longer appear in the account logs, only in the incoming check entries: Outgoing: 24/07/2009, 10:00:50: SEND - sending mail message(s) - 1 message(s) in queue 24/07/2009, 10:00:52: SEND - connected to SMTP server 24/07/2009, 10:00:52: SEND - sending message to cont...@obfuscated.com 24/07/2009, 10:00:59: SEND - message to cont...@obfuscated.com sent (516 bytes) 24/07/2009, 10:00:59: SEND - connection finished - 1 message(s) sent Incoming: 24/07/2009, 10:01:05: FETCH - receiving mail messages 24/07/2009, 10:01:05: FETCH - connected to POP3 server 24/07/2009, 10:01:05: FETCH - authenticated (plain) 24/07/2009, 10:01:05: FETCH - 1 messages in the mailbox, 1 new 24/07/2009, 10:01:06: FETCH - Received message from Privateofcourse , size: 1757 bytes, subject: "AV Log Test" 24/07/2009, 10:01:06: ANTIVIRUS - Examining the incoming POP3 mail message for viruses 24/07/2009, 10:01:06: ANTIVIRUS - No virus found in the examined object 24/07/2009, 10:01:06: FETCH - Received message from privateofcou...@myserver.com to cont...@obfuscated.com, encrypted: No, size: 1757, date: Friday, July 24, 2009 10:00:50 AM, subject: "AV Log Test" 24/07/2009, 10:01:06: FETCH - 1 messages deleted on server 24/07/2009, 10:01:06: FETCH - connection finished - 1 messages received I can only assume this is a bug. There is also a problem with avast!'s plugin configuration being remembered. If you select 'Show icon in system tray and scanning', and 'Logging' under the plugin's configuration, they become 'unselected' the next time you start TB! So, looks like I was wrong. Incoming mail is being checked, and manually checking, but outgoing messages *may* not be..either that or it's just the log entries that are missing. Yup! Run manually works a treat. Finds any unconverted wavs and processes them. I called it from another script and it works as well. And I also ran in via Windows Run and no problem. I also compiled the script and programs it uses into a single exe and used that instead, thinking that TB! might have something against running scripts, but no go. > Have you tried putting the three actions into three separate filters? > (make sure first two are set to continue processing with other > filters) Yes, I have also tried that. And I have tried a Hotkey only filter for the conversion part, but the wavs aren't processed...well know why they aren't but don't know how to solve the problem. When I run my converter, it creates a couple of temp files and folders in the system temp folder. When run manually I can see these being created and removed as the program executes and ends. I also tried this with TB! executing the .exe and TB! is executing it because the temp files and folders are appearing and disappearing. However, the exe isn't running in the voicemail folder, and I know that for certain because the exe unpacks 4 files into the folder it is run in, runs the script then clears up afterwards. You can see these files appear when run manually, but they do not appear in my voicemail folder. So, TB! is executing the exe, but it is being run somewhere else, not in the same folder as it is executed from. And I have no idea why that is, or how to resolve it. This is a very popular misunderstanding, made by people who have used Windows for a long time. Think about this: You have spend 5 or 10 years beeing a Windows expert, and knows how to do everything. Then you try Linux (with a GUI), and suddenly everything is done differently. It would be just as hard going the other way, from Linux to Windows. But in fact it works almost every time now - you can get a Linux disto called Knoppix, which boots off a CD-ROM and right into a GUI without touching the hard drive - you can't do that with Windows! > Hence, Linux, simply, is NOT "easy", and will never be. I think you forget, that computers was made for scientists, so if you are right, most people can't use a computer. When I first used Linux many years ago, the GUI was as you describe: A bit buggy, not easy to use, when you should use a floppy disk you should "mount" it yourself etc., but that is the past, and Linux is just as user friendly as Windows - it's just not a Windows clone, but a different operating system where you have a free choice - just like when you want to buy a car. Sorting Office Filters
A couple of oddities: I subscribe to three mailing lists, of which this is one. I have filters to send messages from each list to its own folder. Two of these filters look for an expression in "kludges", the other looks for a simple string in "subject". When I use the mouse to move between the filters, the "location" field seems to stay set to the first filter rule. eg. if I start by looking at a filter where location is "kludges" then "kludges" is dispayed even if "subject" has been set. And the filters which look for an expression in "kludges" works, but the fikter which looks for a simple string in "subject" doesn't. Thinking about it, I have a guess: I use Norton Antivirus, but when I get infected mail from a specific server (pop3.tiscali.dk) the connection breakes with a message like: FETCH: Connection to host broken (last command sent were: "UIDL", "RETR 1") (the commands vary a bit) It's an old account that pretty much only get virus and spam, so once in a while I disable Nortons scanning of incomming mail, resulting in that it blocks TheBat from writing the infected files to the disk. The .tmp-files are actually empty, and can not be deleted untill TheBat have been closed/restarted. If TheBat just deleted all bat*.tmp files when it started, it should solve many problems like this one. The problem with broken connection and NAV is present with all mail clients I've tried (e.g. Mozilla Thunderbird), so I guess it's a bug in NAV. Empty - didn't help. I think it is a regular bug, and not just the usual errors in the mailbox files. The problem has existed from I ran 2.11 the first time, and I have never had any problems with 2.x. 2.11 consume all CPU resources
Today I upgraded TheBat from v 2.10 to 2.11 by installing on top of the old 2.10. Every time I run TheBat 2.11, the CPU usage goes to 100%, except when TheBat is using the disk a lot. I've tried to remove the BayersIt-plugin and rename it's folder, and move the content of my junk-folder to another folder - without any change. Some tasks, like reading mail, viewing folders and altering options is running as fast as they always have done, while reciving messages and moving messages is painfully slow. When I try to exit TheBat, I get the warning message "Some tasks are active now. Do you want to exit when they are finished?" with the buttons "Yes", "No" and "Abort". Nothing happens when I press any of them, and I have to kill TheBat from the Windows task manager. Well I hope that not too many would be! The idea of paying extra for the manual isn't a new one of course...but usually that's only when the manual is made available in print; a hard copy IOW. A help system should be an integral part of any software package and purchasers shouldn't be expected to pay extra to acquire it. It'd be like buying a washing machine and paying extra for the instructions on how to operate it. It's up to RIT to make certain that their product can be 'operated' by supplying adequate documentation to support it. If we learnt from RIT that the cost of producing better documentation was going to lead to an increase in the price of The Bat! I think some people would feel quite split over it. One of the attractions of TB! is its price, and I think that a price hike would make it a less attractive choice for those contemplating moving away from free versions. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello Edgar, On Tue, 23 Dec 2003 09:51:04 +0100 your time, you said: E> Although the help here in this group is great, It should not need E> to exist. Hmmm, well I think that is a romantic notion myself. So these types of support systems [this list and others] exist because of the lack of good help files with software? I really don't think so :-/ Just take a look around the Net @ other support forums/lists and ponder a while on some of the dumb-arsed questions that people ask! You could construct the best help file system on the planet and release it with your software and people will still defeat it by not 'reading the bleeping manual' and not being able to understand the terminology used, etc. In actual fact, many of the questions asked on this list could easily be answered by reading the existing support files. E> There should be a good help system. Well yes, actually I would agree with this, and have made my feelings known about this subject in the past. Personally, I think RIT Labs are doing The Bat! a disservice by releasing their client with the current help system; although there is easily enough information in the current help file system to get most people up and running it still needs revamping and made more comprehensive. So IMHO The Bat! does _need__ a better designed and more up-to-date help system, I agree. But I can think of many excellent programs with the same shortcomings...not that that justifies it of course. However, I don't believe for a moment that a better help file system would make this list redundant. Not a chance of it! This list is invaluable, and will continue to be so even after/IF RIT get their act together and redo the manual. E> Companies do not have the time to read loads of mailing list to E> find out how the e-mail client works. Companies do not have to read "loads" of mailing lists to find out how The Bat! email client works. That is misleading. There is a help file with TB! and there is this list. Not exactly stretching resources now is it? :-/ I've shown many, many people how to use The Bat! in under 20 minutes. Some of those have been new to computers and some have been veterans. If someone in an company IT dept. really can't work out how to use TB! then they probably need to get some other less demanding job...maybe basket making or something. E> Being a bit more "mainstream" will at least help. No at all. Having better help files would help a little, but those without prior experience, the lazy, and those in need of more complex help will turn to a list like this one, as has always been the way. And yes, I can understand people's criticisms, and of course it is only right that criticisms should be made, but it irks me somewhat when remarks go beyond fair criticism and become unfair put-downs...that strikes me as being somewhat immature (not directed at you of course). I think if you dislike a product so intensely you should really be seeking out something else more suited to your needs. There are plenty of flavours of email client about, although they won't offer you the same excellent range of features that this client can. As I said, TB! has faults but people on this list usually attempt to work around them until the faults have been rectified. - -- Slán, Simon @ i~n+f~o+w~i+z~a+r~d+.~c+o~.+u~k * PGP Key via Web: http://pgp.infowizard.co.uk/ PGP Key via Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Faffing about with TB! v1.62r on W2K SP4 #1830. I've read some comments on this list over the years but my word, these last few remarks really take the biscuit. There is nothing 'unprofessional' about the way The Bat! editor functions, and I must say it is a very discouraging choice of wording. There are distinctive ways of doing things in TB! but those ways work well once you have adapted to them. There is plenty of help available on this list to assist new users in moving to The Bat! from other email clients, and the people offering advice obviously appreciate that it can take a while to complete the transition, and come to terms with the new environment. But you have to at the least appreciate that _every_ email client has it's unique points, and TB! is no exception. If you want really decide that you want TB! to be another email client then switch to that. The benefit of using an excellent client like TB! is that it ISN'T always completely 'mainstream', and so it does require users to learn how to use some of it's many useful features. And TB! is rich in features, unlike other clients I won't mention. Although TB! isn't perfect, because nothing is, it stands head and shoulders above the competition. I think it is perfectly fine to discuss the disadvantages of a program, and talk about its ideal features, etc. but it's a bit unnecessary, unhelpful, and even disrespectful, IMO, to be hypercritical for the sake of it. But you'd lose the other functionality available with X-Ray. X-Ray performs filtering on both SMTP and POP3, which can be very useful. And you aren't just restricted to X-Mailer: headers either. I'd like to see something like X-Ray as a plugin for TB! I don't know whether that is possible, given the nature of the software, but there ya go. - -- Slán, Simon @ i~n+f~o+w~i+z~a+r~d+.~c+o~.+u~k * PGP Key via Web: http://pgp.infowizard.co.uk/ PGP Key via Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Faffing about with TB! v1.62r on W2K SP4 #651. I actually agree quite a lot with some of the points that Roelof made in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] but I'd just like to add that if you have a small LAN with 2, 3, 4, users etc. a proxy is probably the way forward. One installation, one setup serves all. I run a server on my home LAN. I use SpamPal for spam in front of my mail server (Mercury/32) which serves everyone connected to the network. It would seem a bit crazy to let everyone deal with the spam on an individual level in this kind of environment. But generally, what Roelof says I agree with. If X-ray was available as a plugin for TB! for example I wouldn't hesitate in using it instead of running it as another proxy on my server. Something like MyGate would also make an interesting plugin for TB! as well. - -- Slán, Simon @ i~n+f~o+w~i+z~a+r~d+.~c+o~.+u~k * PGP Key via Web: http://pgp.infowizard.co.uk/ PGP Key via Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Faffing about with TB! v1.62r on W2K SP4 #2546. Re: The Bat! is No.1 in my book.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello John, On Sun, 16 Nov 2003 21:57:25 -0600 your time, you said: JM> I don't understand this, could you explain it to me in a little more JM> detail? JM> Maybe a "for instance" or example or twol JM> Thank Above is your message quoted. In this case I selected/highlighted the text in your message that I was replying to and then I hit the F4 key. As you can see, TB! doesn't mess about with the quoted text at all, which is correct, as it is "quoted". However, sometimes when text is quoted it can prove to be a bit unwieldy, especially when the message you are replying to hasn't been wrapped beforehand and the text is on one line that strays across the width of the screen (say 130 or more characters for example). I'd therefore want to quickly reformat the lengthy quoted lines as I was replying to make them easily readable. To do this I'd simply place the TB! caret anywhere within or next to the quoted text with a single mouse click, and then either hit the ALT + L key to wrap the lines to the word wrap setting I'd previously set in Editor Preferences, or I'd hit the ALT + J key to wrap the lines to the word wrap setting and justify the text as well. This is your text after I've clicked anywhere in the text message to place the TB! caret, and then hit ALT + J: JM> I don't understand this, could you explain it to me in a little JM> more detail? Maybe a "for instance" or example or twol Thank Another example of when the wrap shortcut keys are useful is when you are typing a message with TB!'s autowrap feature on, and go back and edit parts of the text. For example, if I typed this: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. and then went back and corrected it like this: The quick brown fox jumped over the *lackadaisical feline*. The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox *leap frogged* over the lazy dog. The text would need reformatting. So a simple ALT + J/L would reformat it. And after this explanation I've just realised that what you were asking me to explain was an error. Doh! Ah well, I'll send this anyway. Someone else might find it useful...well you never know. - -- Slán, Simon @ i~n+f~o+w~i+z~a+r~d+.~c+o~.+u~k * PGP Key via Web: http://pgp.infowizard.co.uk/ PGP Key via Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Faffing about with TB! v1.62r on W2K SP4 #581.
