Hello, Seeing that lately TB! gets stuck on receiving mail more often than it actually manages to complete the transaction, I have decided to try it via IMAP. POP3 to IMAP
Hi all, I apologise if this has been asked multiple times before, but I'm after some assistance to what is hopefully quite a straight forward question!? I've decided to convert one of my accounts from POP3 to IMAP as my server supports both protocols. The account in question currently has about 30 folders with multiple filters in place to move messages to these folders. To cut a long story short, basically I'd like to 'simply' keep everything intact as it is, but change the account to IMAP rather than POP3. Is this at all possible, or is it a case of having to re-create the account in IMAP and then copy the folders, messages and filters over? -- Regards, Chris Created using The Bat! v3.0.2.6 OS of Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 2 Cleaning up SPAM with Bayes Filter Plugin v1.5.6 Current version is 3.0.1.33 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

T Use Thunderbird to copy the messages to IMAP -- it's much better at T this than TB! is. Hmm, if there a brief guide available of how to do this? What I did was from TB!, select the messages in a folder and export as unix mailbox in the Tbird Local Folders (in your profile/mail folder). I called the mailbox temp. Then in Tbird, open the Local Folders/temp folder, select the messages and move or copy to the appropriate IMAP folder. Go back to TB!, repeat with the next folder, choosing to overwrite temp (not append). It's a long, laborious process, but once you're on IMAP, you can switch between clients at any time (or run a couple of different clients simultaneously). Just follow the URL at the bottom of any message on TBUDL. Choose the relevant link on the left under 'Contents'. or To join the TBBETA, send a message to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm sure the URL will work, but I'm not so sure about the 'mailto' link because IIRC there was some maintenance on the servers which may have an impact. Which do you think I should use? POP3. You're using TB and TB has a bit imperfect IMAP implementation. IMAP is more suited to a LAN, because you've got to connect to the server to read your mail (even a second or third time) Of course IMAP has advantages like being able to read your mail on any computer (with an imap client), but with the possibilities that TB offers I prefer POP3. -- Groetjes, Roelof Current Ver: 1.60m FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://bt.ritlabs.com

If you need access to your mail from different locations and computers, even share your mailbase with others - as would be the case for corporate mails (i.e. support) - IMAP is a good idea. Otherwise POP3 is the way to go. Particularly since TB!'s IMAP support is practically nothing more than an extended POP3. That is, TB! supports the most basic commands (getting mail and sending mail) of the protocol. Thank you. I've been pulling my hair out for a month trying to figure out how to make The Bat! be at all useful. Knowing it simply doesn't have the functionality I need is of great assistance. CK Do you know if it is planned that BAT will be developed toward IMAP in CK the future? I'm a user, just like you. So I haven't any idea where RITlabs wants to go with TB. But the setup of TB is such that IMNSHO it doesn't make much sense to have much emphasis on IMAP. TB is about collecting mail and processing it automatically into folders, responders, etc. To do so effectively with IMAP you'd need to copy every filter to every copy of TB, otherwise their use would be fairly limited. With IMAP you need to do the processing on the server and the only thing you need a mua for is to access the processed mail and some manual operations. That is if you want to process the mail consistently. Therefor it would be a waste of resources to develop the IMAP of TB any further. The advantage to process the same mail twice (via POP3) at two locations (home and office) is that your interests at both places may differ strongly. So it would make sense to use two different sets of filters. -- Groetjes, Roelof Current Ver: 1.60m FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://bt.ritlabs.com
POP3 or IMAP?
Hello, I have just realized that our mail server supports both POP3 access and IMAP access. Which do you think I should use? I read the same mail account from work and home, so it would be really nice to see the same messages at both places. However, I don't really see what IMAP could give me over POP using the BAT. -- Best regards, Csaba Kiss [EMAIL PROTECTED] MTC Karolinska Institute Stockholm, Sweden tel:+4687286259 fax:+468330498 ICQ:7911383 _ This message was created using The Bat! v1.60m on Wednesday, May 22, 2002. Which do you think I should use? I read the CK same mail account from work and home, so it would be really nice to CK see the same messages at both places. However, I don't really see what CK IMAP could give me over POP using the BAT. The one advantage of IMAP that I might like is that the mail is stored on the server. So if I have a PC crash, my mail is still on the server and I can retrieve it. Although if your provider crashes, are they backing up their mail servers? Maybe not. Something to think about. I also have the option of POP and IMAP, and I go with POP. I just leave the mail on the server at all of my mail client locations, except one where it downloads the mail and deletes it from the server. That way, I can still see e-mail wherever I'm at. -MikeD Current Ver: 1.60m FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://bt.ritlabs.com
