Poco was what I used before switching to TheBat. IIRC, it stuffed up
quoting on messages that were replied to a lot (this was over a year
ago) and a mailing list I subscribed to threatened to excommunicate me
if I didn't fix it... Possibly it got fixed.

SysAdmins tend to be a menace. Safer to remove their rights to write
to your registry and disks, especially if you write code.

This might help identify the culprit - it displays registry activity
as it happens, with the process that did it.

Hello Michael L. Wilson,

Ok, if your folders are missing presumably you know some of their
names...
Why not just do a simple search for a few of them to see where they
are and whats in them...
Once you know where they are and they arent all zapped, getting the
bat to realise its looking in the wrong place (likely a user error!!),
it can be fixed...

Wow. Then this one is a scorcher.

Tell you what. When TB! starts and your mail is gone, take a look in
the registry and go to

HKCU/Software/RIT/The Bat!

Look for a entry called 'Working Directory'. Does the value correspond
with your current installation path to \The Bat!\Mail?

No, and I had it happen once after an install. All it means is a
pointer somewhere to the wrong place and if it can be pinpointed what
caused it, well, it could be fixed.
if your mail disappears its caused by something but for sure its not a

Why instead of blaming the Bat to be a virus which it isnt, donot you
supply details?
The bat is great to prevent infections, and for sure it isnt.
If you have problems like you mention you have a major system problem.
But it isnt the Bat...

If I got stuck like that I would seriously consider a reformat and
clean install...

What OS, and what other things are you running??

Anyway consider that with your system being sick even if you blame the
bBat, you likely get zapped again whatever you are running...
You need to find the cause or just start clean.

I myself had a whole company setup this way as it proved to be
impossible to convince the users NOT to mess up the root node and
other places they had no need to store anything
In short anything on C:\ which didnt belong there got zapped
Any directory in program files not supposed to be there, the same...
management supported it and after a few hickups and complaints after
which the guys causing the problem got kicked from above situation
improved and when I deactivated it slowly based on behaviour, no
  problem...

Ceo's losing their data, well most have no business using a computer,
  too old/dumb for it(g).
  AND rarely listening to advice..
Secondly hanging laptops and palms donot belong on a company
network, they are a security network, especially if the owners do
  what they want...

One guy here is slowly learning here that every time he logs on he
gets zapped by the latest virus around... Luckily he can read from but
  not write to the network...

This classically sounds like a problem with the registry. TB! stores
the path to all accounts in the registry. Do you keep your accounts
in the default location or do you have them elsewhere on the system??

You need to tell us more about your system. What OS are you running?
Is the system running perfectly well otherwise. Are you having
problems with any other applications retaining their settings between
reboots?

Did you recently do any virus scans?
Do you run any software to clean the registry or to install/uninstall
programs automatically?

2002-05-01 Thread Michael L. Wilson

Messages have been posted about this and no help. The fact that I have to
rebuild me entire message base just to read the posts makes it difficult to
interact. Any help? Give it. I'll listen and try it. I refuse to use a
Microsoft Product for email, so to keep the discussion going, I have no
choice but Eudora.

Re: The bat is a virus. goodbye

2002-05-01 Thread Michael L. Wilson

Greetings,
I have been a TB user for years. I love it. I use it all the time. I
even tried some beta releases with never a major problem. I download 1.60h
and the next day (after my computer has been off all night), I turn it on
and all my mail is gone. I have backed up my TBB files, so I rebuild
everything. Next day, all my mail is gone. So, I uninstall everything,
delete the directory and install 1.60c and rebuild (by this time, two of my
TBB message files will not import into 1.60c). The next day, all my mail
is gone. You tell me...

Michael, this could be any number of things...you should stick with it and
ask some questions of the list...you'd certainly get some help. I bet it
has more to do with settings on your computer/OS than it does with TB!.

Sounds like you've got something weird in your startup procedure or
some kind of fail-safe restoring the registry behind your back.
Whatever. It's nothing to do with The Bat! The Bat! is the victim, not
the culprit.

> Therefore, I am, deleting the bat, never to return.

As you wish. Eudora is a bit of a silly choice, but each to their own
I guess.

> The bat is a virus.

LOL! Now you're being ridiculous! Hey - perhaps SpamKiller did it?
