[ot_caving] government rebate check
What are you going to spend your $ 600 or $ 1,200 check on? If every caver donated their check to ICS, wouldn't that be nice? or how about Punkin Cave or Robber Baron? I bet a few people buy plasma TV's. Walmart and others have a 32 inch mode for $ 537, so plus tax that get's you a TV, with enough left over to order popcorn. Most people will just buy scratch off ticks, lottery tickets, a trip to the casino, a table dance, or a cheap set of shiny chrome wheels for their car, a dimebag of crack, etc. We are simply borrowing money from our grandkids to let the rif-raf buy whatever they want. Many immigrants will qualify for this somehow, even if they are living south of the border. I will certainly buy a chinese made LED head-lamp. [Texascavers] Body Painting
One more point. Albeit caving related only through inclusion in 50 years ---. Carl also said: >> "painting" was merely using the body of a willing volunteer to smear paint Ah!! "Smear"!!! For such a precision gunsmith to fail to recognize the technical details!! Loren was quick to point out that latex paint is thyxotropic. That means that when pressure is applied, the fluid (latex paint in this case) becomes less viscous and more fluid. That is the magic that allows latex paint to be applied using a roller. (ref: http://ci.nii.ac.jp/naid/110002988809/) In the case under discussion, the variations in the human skin organ create delicate and exquisite variations in pressure translated into artistic visualization when the skin organ is used as a painting implement. This becomes very apparent when body painting is applied to a firm, uniform surface, such as the side panel of TR's camper. Unfortunately, the family sensibilities of the NSS attendees in Springfield in 1968 required that TinkerBelle wear abbreviated items of cloth, which significantly detracted from the effect of the body painting. Loren was able to demonstrate, in more private location of Grode Hollow (Grode/Groad - ah more vagaries of the spelling and folklore by Texas cavers) the more delicate and artistic results of using unclothed female body parts. Humph!! "Smear!" Indeed!! For shame, for your choice of words, Carl. "Merely" does not even warrant comment. On the facing page begins a long quotation from Frank Binney about his first encounters with some of the fabled Texas/Mexico cavers that ends with a comment about the painting of T.R. One of his early promotional photos included a balloon (I think Hot Air, at least something with a passenger gondola) in the cave, probably in the Cathedral Room. Anybody else remember that? While on memory row, that was also the convention when Dwight and Sandy Deal, Squire and Nancy Lewis, and Loren Bolinger established the original Grode Hollow of disreputable old-farts, and Loren painted the first Grode Hollow sign. The slogan was: Even the flys don't like Katz Boch" (the cheapest beer available at 99 cents a 6-pack). And, of course, TR Evans brought copious quantities of Lab-O to spike the green slime, which decimated the unwary, and Loren used TinkerBell's body to paint TR's truck (see p. 317 in 50 years --). I'm not exactly sure why Carl included that under his title of "Serious Side of Texas Caving". Probably because it was an image just too good not to use somewhere. RE: [ot_caving] political news
Charles, David, While many do not agree with our current war effort, everyone should agree that the United States would not survive as a free and independent nation without a strong military force to defend our nation, our interests and our freedom. Those who don't believe this don't know history, are uninformed and are living in a dream world. I think that the Berkeley city council is wrong and that the recruiters are there for the public good. The college at Berkeley has long had a reputation for radical liberalism and apparently so do the city fathers. Waste in big government is enevitable as proper oversight of something this large is difficult if not impossible. Voting for those leaders at all levels of government who have DEMONSTRATED fiscal responsibility would help. Unfortunately, too many will vote the party ticket regardless of its philophosy. Did you see on the news what is going on in Berkeley California? The city council has banned US military recruitment centers inside of its city limits. Congress is bullying them, by threatening to withhold educational funding to the University. Did anything like that ever happen during Vietnam? In my opinion, the military recruitment centers are a huge waste of tax money. Imagine if Exxon or some US giant corporation rented office space in a shopping mall and paid 2 employees to sit there with there thumb up there ass all day. Congress calls it - creating jobs, as in, "they created 100,000 jobs last year." I would imagine that from the perspective of the Berkelians, that they are being harassed by a facist regime. [ot_caving] car news
Dodge dealers now have BlueTec diesel 4x4 trucks in stock. BlueTec is Mercedes most efficient technology for diesels. Rumors are that it will be in the diesel Cherokee next year. I still have not seen a 4x4 version of the diesel Cherokee. Has anybody else? Nissan dealers are now selling trucks with flex-fuel capability. Meaning they can run on 85 percent ethanol. I still haven't seen an ethanol pump yet. I have seen hybrid cars on used car lots. They are way too expensive. My theory is that people will lose money selling their hybrid cars, as the buyer will not want to pay extra for it, like when it is a new car. The buyer may also be concerned that the hybrid parts are needing replacement which is expensive. Truck Trend magazine this month has several interesting news articles on 2009 model cars, featuring a new improved hybrid Chevy Truck based on the alledged Chevy Hybrid Tahoe. I still haven't seen a hybrid Tahoe or Yukon, yet. Nor have a seen a hybrid Nissan Altima, Saturn Auro, Mercury Mariner, all of which are supposed to already be on the market. And the tiny Smart Car is supposed to be coming to the U.S. Honda cancelled the 2008 hybrid Accord. I don't think there were many 2007 models, as I think they stopped production of them early on. [ot_caving] more new LED lights
Walmart has at least 3 new LED lanterns by Coleman aimed at competing with the flourescent lanterns that they have had for many years. One of them has a crank to generate energy. The other collapses down to 1/2 its original size. And I think the other was a smaller lantern about 11" tall by 4 inches in diameter. They all use LED's point upward at a cone shaped shiny reflector. Here is an interesting story about Mr. Coleman: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=940DE3D9163CF930A1575AC0A96E948260 Walmart also has a new LED flashlight, but it is way too expensive. They have a kids LED headlamp now. Choices of body colors are Red, Green and Blue. Few of the other headlamp models come in choices of colors. It should match the color of your nylon overalls, right?
