[Texascavers] OT mini retreat: yoga, meditation, journaling for women

2008-02-19 Thread Nancy Weaver
Upon hearing that I just completed a yoga teacher training course,
Jocie Hooper asked me to consider leading a half day women's yoga,
meditation and vision quest journaling retreat at my home in
Driftwood. She was so enthusiastic that I have decided to schedule
one for either a saturday or sunday in March or early April. Jocie
has a conflict on the weekend of March 29th and April19 (Sat). So I
am considering either the weekend of March 15, 16 or April 5,6 or
12,13. It can be either saturday or sunday, depending on what works
best for the most people interested.

I am thinking of 4 hours, say 10 - 2, with a light potluck lunch.
We could have several hours of yoga practice interspersed with breath
work, guided meditation, lunch and some journaling practices. I
think a reasonable cost would be $30.

If you are interested in being on a one time email notification list,
with no commitment to come, please contact me. Feel free to pass
this on to any women you know that you think would enjoy it.
We'll work out a day best suited for those interested. I feel
comfortable with a group of up to 10 women.

namaste (from my heart to yours)

[ot_caving] high definition video disc

2008-02-19 Thread David
Toshiba announced today the end of their version of
High-Definition DVD.

If I were them, I would sell the technology to a small niche
company, that could market HD-DVD into portable
movie devices, like the Portable Playstation.

For example, something similar to the VideoNow product , or a
slim-portable DVD player with a small screen, similar to the Casio DVD
player. And to possibly
use 3 disc.

One of the problems with that idea however, is that high definition
really only looks better on the bigger screens. They could always
make a TV-out connection on the gadget.

Anyways, it is likely that Blu-ray is going to sell a lot better now.Don't
you wish you had some stock in that?

Re: [ot_caving] Vinyl is good but...

2008-02-19 Thread David
About 6 years ago, I reported on Cavetex that I had copied
some of my vinyl LP's onto my computer's hard-drive using

a free program I had found on the internet.

http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/

Unfortunately, I never used it much after that.

There are many ways now to get your music off of an old LP
and into your IPOD or other gadget. Supposedly, the
trick in getting a good sound transfer is to not use a
computer, but to either purchase a $ 500 TEAC CD-LP
recorder, or purchase an external sound card and a really
good turntable.

The cheapest route seems to be the download above,
plus a cheap turntable, and a pre-amp going into your
computers sound card.

I still think it could be a lot easier, such as straight from
the LP to your portable gadget. I believe the old Sony
Walkman Mini-disc recorder had that capability, but I
never confirmed it.

I imagine by now, nearly every song that has ever been
recorded is now available for purchase on-line, but that
wasn't the case 5 years ago.I would also think that
in a few years, the prices on some of those songs will
be more reasonable. Who wants to pay 99 cents for
Disco Duck or the Jim Nabors smash hit?

Re: [ot_caving] Vinyl is good but...

2008-02-19 Thread Don Cooper
I totally have to disagree with the idea of buying an external device to
accomplish this feat.

I mean, I did it with only a very good turntable, a decent preamplifier and
a computer containing a fairly good sound card. The results were
indistinguishable from the original. Most new sound cards are capable of
converting audio into digital at a rate of 50Khz with 24bit resolution -
settings I made the recordings with. (42Khz at 16 bit is quite enough to do
it)

The bad guys who want to control everything you do, digitally, with any
copywrited material
would like ALL Analog to Digital converter devices - essentially -
outlawed or hobbled to the extent that you could not exercise your
technological abilities to do such...

contemporary poetry you're likely to come across makes There once was

[ot_caving] Ladybugs

2008-02-19 Thread Don Cooper
I hope there are enough cavers who read this section, that it might
encompass someone who knows these things
But I am wondering what media or environment it is that suits
Ladybugs. My new domain (rented duplex next door to Cammy and Vico Jones)
has a minor infestation of ladybugs - at least in the bathroom. I cannot
tell where they are coming from - I think from around the edges of the
bathroom window (ie. from somewhere in the innards of the structure) - this
morning while taking a nice long hot bath I counted seven of them - all
around the window, apparently trying to escape.
I understand they are beneficial insects. (I try not to harm any of them or
the little jumping spiders that hang around.)
They are somewhat interesting. I had not realized before that their spots
are not uniformly issued - some have none. (I'm assuming they are all from
the same family and not multiple species or varieties.)

[Texascavers] Anthony Bourdain Goes Caving on the Travel Channel

2008-02-19 Thread mark . alman

Anyone catch the irreverent travel host and world renowned foodie on the
Travel Channel last night?

He went caving in Jamaica and, from all appearances, had a miserable
time.

Part of the problem may be that his intrepid guides had him wearing
tennis shoes into a muddy cave, no gloves or knee pads, trekking thru
jungle with 200% humidity,
and he seemed particularly concerned about anal invading parasites.

Can't blame him on the latter point!

He will eat the most gosh awful food (watch the Namibia episode to watch
him partake of a certain delicacy from the back end of a warthog to see
what I mean),
but I wouldn't count on him making any Grotto meetings.

If you missed it, they're running it again on Feb. 23rd at 1 PM.

Set them DVR's!

Now we're really getting off the subject of caving, but...
I imagine that a chimp could learn to swim. Its hard for me to tell if I
learned to swim, but it does not seem like a built-in set of reflexes came
into play. Apes are so closely approximate to our own bodies - I cant see
anything that would keep them from swimming - aside from freaking out by
being in such an inappropriate environment.

[Texascavers] Camp Eagle Ridge Walk Opportunity

2008-02-19 Thread O'Bryan, Lisa Renee

I am posting an email from the director of camp eagle. To respond please email
him at the address he provides at the end of the email.
~Lisa

For Immediate Release!

Texas Cavers,

Camp Eagle is hosting a ridge-walking event this April 18-20. Through some
interesting circumstances, our cave potential, and the advice of many cave
minded people, we have been prompted to host a ridge-walking event. Camp Eagle
is a summer camp, retreat center and premier adventure destination located on
1400 acres in the Texas Hill Country right at the headwaters of the Nueces
River. We are located a few miles or less from many local caves, such as:
Poppy Cave, Red Arrow Cave, Devils Sinkhole, Blue Hole a large spring, and
other un-registered and un-mapped small caves. However, none of these caves
are on our property and we are going to look for one.

A few grottos have been contacted in Texas and they have expressed significant
interest in coming out. We as Camp Eagle are interested in learning more and
having many groups of cavers come together for a fun time, networking,
ridge-walking, and to help us out. We are making available: hostel-style
lodging for up to 100 people, camping sites with a bathhouse, our trails,
waterfront, our beautiful property, cliffs, coffee shop, small kitchen, etc for
this event. We are looking for this to be a very laid back sort of thing with
lots of room for adventure. The cost is free, with the exception of short
order meals for those interested.

One interesting thing that prompted the start of all this were two reports of a
found cave on our property from two unrelated group of hikers and adventure
racers. The last group said they closed off the entrance due to the unstable
look of the ceiling. Further investigation has shown some good signs of a cave
but nothing for sure.

Basically, we as the staff of Camp Eagle no very little about caves and looking
for one but are very interested in learning more and possibly finding one on
our property.

If you are interested and would like more information please contact me and
check us out on the web. Thanks.
