[Texascavers] Twitter related - part 2

2009-06-19 Thread David
Here is an example of what I was getting at:

 http://ginx.com/road_cycling

At this site, bicyclers can post tweets, and anyone can
read these tweets on their wi-fi gadgets.

That may not be the best example.

But the idea is that a caving event, such as ICS, would
be a "group" on a microblog site like Ginx, and every
attendee would have access to it.

This may be too geeky for most cavers. I think
the Twitter thing I posted about is a much simpler
way of getting the information out.I think it needs
to be simpler though to really be practical.

Not everybody at ICS will be on CaveTex, and CaveTex
doesn't want people posting silly things like "PJ is
passed out in the hot tub, come check it out."

And most people are not going to have time to
read MySpace updates, etc.

That is were some form of Twitter fits in.

On a related note, caver Denver Hopkins
is in Bermuda in some sort of sailing contest, and
he is posting daily tweets.

[Texascavers] Twitter and ICS related

2009-06-19 Thread David
A week ago, I posted something about a Twitter thing I was
trying in an effort to help people stay informed about the
happenings in Kerrville on their wi-fi gadgets.

So far, only 3 others have become "followers" to this.

It looks like it will be a flop, but there is still a month to
go.

www.twitter.com

Username: KerrCaveNews
password:Kerrville

anybody can post anything.

You need to only log on while you are writing your "tweet."

Then immediately log off.

Twitter was not designed to work this way, but it seems like
a work-around until something better comes along.

I don't understand Twitter yet. It appears you have to have
an account to read the tweets, which seems to discourage
people from getting into micro-blogging.

I different micro-blog would work better, but it seems Twitter
is the most popular.

I posted several things only in an effort to get the ball rolling.
There does seem to be some kind of potential for communicating
around the campus with this.Kind of like the walkie-talkie of the
21st century ?

In theory, this could replace the paper daily newsletters, that require
a lot of work to put out and are out-dated by the time they reach
the cavers hands, and end up becoming trash at the end of the
event.

For example, the newsletters usually say stuff like,

Happy Birthday to Hodag Joe, or Happy Anniversary to Mr. & Mrs.
Hodag.Or, "Doug visit vendor to receive your free gift." ( only
to learn that your credit card didn't go thru )

All of that kind of stuff, could go on a micro-blog.

[Texascavers] good news

2009-06-19 Thread David
It appears the price of gas is going to be below $ 2.80 in Kerrville
and other parts
of Texas during ICS.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aINQ5xaXHosk

That was not the situation this time last summer as some of us were making plans
to drive to Florida.

I don't see anything in the news to suggest the price at the pump is going to
change much from what it already is, however, it seems to always jump around
July the 4th for no reason.

For most Texas cavers, gas cost will not be an issue at this event. But for
people driving from California, it will be a consideration affecting
their travel
decisions.

I think the caver that drives the farthest should win a gallon jug of
authentic made-in-Texas gasoline as a souvenir.

Greetings A & P Symposium Participants,

We have a final schedule and a copy is attached. Our Symposium will be an all
day afare starting at 8 AM on Tuesday 21 July 2009. We'll be meeting in Room
138 of the Mountaineer Center. Unfortunately, our Commission and Symposium
Co-chair, Roman Hapka, won't be able to make the Congress. We had his talk
scheduled for 2:20 to 2:40 PM; we will now be using that slot as a time to view
the three posters, which will be displayed in the afternoon in the Lobby of the
Mountaineer Center. They will also be available for viewing during the
afternoon breaks. The three posters are listed on the attached Poster List for
Symposium 1 on Tuesday Afternoon and here:

Archaeology in Brazilian caves. Xavier, Leandro A.F., Divaldo R. Sampaio.

Mgharet Al-Hourriye: A speleo-archaeological project. Abdul-Nour, Hani, Samer
Amhaz, Lorine Mouawad, Badr Jabbour-Gedeon.

New researches in a famous karst area: The cradle of humankind (Gauteng, South

Attached are three files: the final schedule, schedule-at-a-glance, and list of
poster papers. I just sent them off to Tom for the program. He expects to have
them plugged into the program today and possibly send the program to the
printer tomorrow. No more changes are possible.

After literally hundreds of messages, especially after the draft schedule was
posted, I was able to accommodate nearly all requests. There are still a few
items (probably less than five) that are somewhat awkward in their placement,
but I couldn’t find ways to adjust for them without making things more awkward
in other ways. In any case, it is done and I think it is overall in very good
shape.

Lee and Dave, you still some work ahead of you (Lisa and Rick too, keep
reading). The first thing is to send instructions to all of the symposium and
session chairmen. Dave may have already done this for the symposia and, if so,
could share them with Lee so he doesn’t have to write them from scratch. The
key points that need to be covered are that the chairmen should:

· Arrive 15 minutes before the session starts to begin loading
PowerPoints into the computer; this is especially crucial if they are doing
only a quarter-day session and don’t have a break to load more.

· Understand that there will be no AV assistants in the rooms; if they
aren’t comfortable with the technology they should ask a knowledgeable friend
for help. If they have a serious technology problem (not that they don’t know
how to load a file or open PowerPoint, someone in the room will certainly be
competent at that), like burned out bulb or malfunctioning projector, they
should call Rick Corbell who is in charge of AV. His number is: 210-313-6084
(Rick, it may be a good idea for you to tape in each room “For ICS AV
emergencies call 210-313-6084” to the tables where the session chairmen will be
seated).

· Take turns introducing the speakers.

· Keep the papers on time and absolutely no longer than 20 minutes.

· Do not start papers early.

· Do not change the schedule or move papers up if a paper/author is
absent.

· Encourage discussion and be prepared to ask questions if a paper ends
and no one else is asking question, if there are still a couple of minutes
before the next paper begins; announcements of related luncheons or meetings
are also appropriate for such times.

· If a paper/author is missing, open the time slot to a presentation
from the floor, assuming they have it ready to go and can finish before the
time the next paper is scheduled to start. Additionally, the chairmen should
consider having a couple of their own papers already loaded on the computer for
presentation if the time slot is open and if no one else offers. The paper
should be related to the topic of the session and ideally should be something
not being presented elsewhere at the ICS if possible.

There is also one other thing they need to

[Texascavers] San Antonio going Batty

2009-06-19 Thread Joe Ranzau
http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/Alamo_City_has_reason_to_go_batty.html

 *By Ariel Barkhurst *
 - Express-News

For years, when it came to sources of city pride, San Antonio had the Alamo
and Austin had the bats.

But now, San Antonio may be usurping Austin’s flying mammalian attraction to
become the Alamo and Bat City.

About 8,000 Mexican free-tailed bats have colonized the underside of
Interstate 35 over the San Antonio River at Camden Street, and San Antonians
have begun to emerge from their homes to watch the bats emerge from their
roost.

And while there may not be as many bats here as there are at Austin’s
Congress Avenue Bridge — 1.5 million bats have roosted there since 1986 —
that didn’t stop almost 200 people, including former Mayor Henry Cisneros
and Councilwoman Mary Alice Cisneros, from gathering along the Museum Reach
one night last week to watch the bats as they emerged from the crevices of
the bridge in swooping bursts.

“These will be more cultured bats,” said Henry Cisneros, who was celebrating
his 62nd birthday. “They’re a special breed of river bats. Austin can’t
match that.”

Austin promotes the critters with a giant bat sculpture dubbed “Night Wing”
near the bats’ roost, seating areas and benches for bat watchers and a “bat
hot line” at the Austin American-Statesman, among other things.

No surprise, then, that a 1998 study by Austin-based Bat Conservation
International found the bats bring in about $11 million in tourism each
year, a number that obviously would be higher now, says Susan Kwasniak,
director of marketing and community for the organization.

So, what’s San Antonio going to do to capitalize on its own flying mammalian
tourist attraction?

For one thing, there will be a few benches installed under Camden Street,
said Mark Sorenson, project manager for the Museum Reach urban segment with
the San Antonio River Authority.

“I don’t know of any other place we could put benches as of now,” he said.
“The project as it goes through that area wasn’t originally designed with
creating bat viewing areas, so we are a little cramped for public space in
there, so I don’t know that from a public projects perspective there’ll be
too much that we can do. That’s why we’re hopeful the private property
owners will be willing to develop the property for bat viewing.”

Despite the lack of space for expanded bat-viewing areas, the crowd last
week was comfortably spread out along the sidewalks and grassy areas near
the roost.

Although some at the river authority expected the viewers to trample the
landscaping, Sorenson hasn’t noticed any damage.

San Antonio’s colony may never reach the size of the Austin colony because,
according to Tim Hanks, owner of Commercial Bat Control, this probably is a
bachelor colony, which is much smaller than a female or “maternity” colony
like the one in Austin.

But that doesn’t make these bats any less special to San Antonio natives
like Henry Cisneros.

“This is my unexpected birthday gift,” Cisneros said, “to see the bats.”

Here is the official state list:

[Texascavers] RE: Meals at ICS ?

2009-06-19 Thread George Veni
Lyndon,

We have tried to set up the ICS so people will not have to leave campus if
they don't want to. Meal options are:

Howdy Party (Monday night), NSS Awards Banquet (Friday night), and ICS
Banquet (Saturday night) are all included in the price of registration. For
all other meals.

Dining Hall will serve breakfast, lunch, and supper, and have a different
lunch and dinner menu every day.

Lion's Den is fast-food style food court in the building across from the
Dining Hall, which will also most many major sessions and ICS registration.

BBQ and Pizza booths will be located to service the sessions in meetings and
rooms at the north end of the campus. They will provide a fixed menu for
lunch and supper.

Meal cards are available for $70/10 meals. Buying meals individually will
run $6-9. I suggest getting a meal card and using it mostly on the $9 meals.

All food will be provided by Sodexo, the food service branch of Marriott.
This is not choke-it-down cafeteria food that you experience on some
campuses (notice above, "Dining Hall" not "cafeteria"). This is good stuff!

The ICS starts one month from today! (Not that I'm counting.)

Thank you for explaining the camping situation to us.

I got a hungry caver question:

How about the food and meal situation? I know there are at least 3 dinner
banquets where food is included in the registration. But I do not think the
breakfast, lunch and other dinners are included, all day, everyday. So, will
the mess hall/cafeteria be open on campus during the ICS? If you can let us

I'd hate to have to drive into town for every meal.

Thank you.

RE: [Texascavers] camping at ICS ?

2009-06-19 Thread George Veni
DL: I am just curious how many CaveTex readers plan to camp at the campus,
and if you plan to camp all week.

GV: Based on projections from the ICS registration database, I guess between
600-700 people will be camping. I know that many Texas cavers who normally
would camp are staying in hotels, dorms, etc. because they are working on
the ICS and need an easy set-up for rest and preparation for the next day's
work.

DL: They... will plan to camp at the last minute.

GV: Camping does not require early registration. There is plenty of space
and people can sign up to camp when they arrive.

DL: The swimming pool is near the campground, but it may not be open late at
night after the sessions. Anybody know?

GV: The swimming pool will be open daily from noon until 8 p.m. every day.
The area is not lit at night and for safety reasons it will not be open at
later hours.

DL: I did not get a chance to walk down to the swimming hole near the
campus. I don't know how far it is from the campground or how nice it is. I
presume a trail there leads to the swimming hole?

GV: Pete Strickland has established a trail to the river. It is a short walk
of about 3-8 minutes from the two trailheads on campus. The river is not
particularly deep in that area, but it is cool and wet.

DL: I presume the beer situation is under control since one of the major
sponsors is a beer corporation. Has that ever happened before?

GV: Spoetzl Brewery, the maker of the fine Shiner beers, is an ICS sponsor
and will keep everyone's beer mugs filled. Thank Spoetzl with your
patronage. Frank Binney set this up and Bill Steele worked out the details.
Thank them with a Shiner or two at events other than the ICS, where the beer
is included in the price of registration.

( Disclaimer: Some of these cavers may claim out of state grottos, but I
think they all live in Texas or claim to be from Texas, or something like
that. )...

Anyone is welcome to put this list in alphabetical order or any other order
that would be useful for the event.

**

For anyone interested in who is registered for the ICS, go to
https://secure.concentric.com/ics2009.us/register/whois/. By scrolling down
the page you'll find options to list people by registration number,
alphabetically, country, state, and trips. The last three list people
alphabetically. The information is in a database that allows easy sorting
and processing of the registrants' data as needed.

Currently, 199 people are registered from Texas. State affiliation on the
list is not based on grottos but on the person's mailing address. For
example, I still consider myself a Texas caver, but you'll find my name
listed under New Mexico.

Many people coming to the ICS are not cavers. They are cave and karst
scientists, managers, and educators. For many years there were two camps of
people working on cave and karst issues: those with caving backgrounds and
those without. Many of those on the caving side believed that non-cavers
couldn't grasp the realities and complexities of the karst environment, and
some couldn't. Many of those on the non-caving side believed that the cavers
were a bunch of enthusiasts who didn't have a good grasp of the science, and
some didn't. In recent years, there has been a healing of this artificial
rift. Both sides have important perspectives and insights to offer.

One of my goals with this ICS was to further bring those sides together, and
it is happening. Some of our symposia, meetings, field trips, and many of
the papers that will be presented will be from people on the non-caving
side. They have learned to appreciate the insights that caver scientists and
managers have, and do excellent work by bringing in ideas and information
that their caver counterparts never considered. The list of sponsors is
another example of bringing in people and organizations who are outside the
traditional caver circles. If we are to effectively study, manage, and
educate people about caves and karst, we'll be far more effective by
building partnerships with non-cavers, and the ICS is a big step in that
direction.

[Texascavers] ICS Kayaking Call for Volunteers

2009-06-19 Thread Robert B
Friends

Please consider this email as another ICS call for Volunteers.

I have been requested to coordinate and offer Kayaking opportunities during
ICS.

As most of you are aware, Texas is in an extreme drought and most rivers do
not have the flow rates that allow enjoyable water activities. The Guadalupe
is no exception. However, we all know this can change if weather conditions
bring lots of rain.

The current River conditions has been brought to the attention of the
ICS Activities Committee (not that they we unaware of the drought) with a
request that we abandon all kayaking activities. Thereby releasing any vans
'on hold' for this activity and allowing for those who might run kayaking to
move on to other ICS activities needing their help.

The Activities Committee has requested that I offer at least some very local
Kayaking activities.
The general plan is to offer Kayaking within the small lakes in Kerrville.
As you may be aware there are a few low level dams that hold enough water to
paddle on. We may look further upstream and put in at Schumachers Crossing
and paddle down to Ingram or further.

The transportation Coordinator has been informed that one van would be need
to take folks to the "Put In" and later pick them up at the "take out". If
we are limited to using just the local lakes then the locations are the
same.

What do we need to offer this activity. Volunteers and a truck to haul
the trailer w/boats paddles lifejackets.

I have access to enough equipment to put 7 boats in the water (with paddles
& life jackets) . I have a trailer to haul this equipment. My 5x10 trailer
cannot hold much more. Do we need more??

As stated above, please consider this email as another ICS call for
Volunteers.

Please contact Rob Bisset if you would like to offer your help.

[Texascavers] reply to Mark's comment about the big tree

2009-06-19 Thread David
I was only trying to compare the camping experiences of the
various conventions. The comment about the tree was an effort to
show that the convention was fun even
though the attendance was low.

Had the huge tree not been there, the campers would have scattered out
all over the shadeless muddy field and it just would not have been the same
camaraderie.

I didn't see much shade at the campground on the Shriener campus,
so I plan to bring all my tarps.

Walmart, Target, Academy, etc, sell a large octagon-shaped screened
shelter. These work great for this kind of camping.
They all come with a cheezy plastic connector at the top that is
the weak link in the structure. I recommend if you have one of these
or plan to get one, that you wrap the plastic part in glue and duct-tape,
and then poke holes in the tape where the poles fit into the part. After
that, it should weather a storm. I have one of these and plan to
bring it.

[Texascavers] RE: camping at ICS ?

  David Locklear said:

>In Lake City, we had a huge tree that nearly every caver was able to set up

That doesn't make sense. (Should I be surprised?) Most cavers wouldn't
have known about the big tree until they got there. And how many people would
go to a convention just because it had a nice tree in the campground? In fact,
I think the Florida convention did have low attendance.
