[Texascavers] Glow in the dark caving rope ?
Has anybody heard about this yet ? http://www.pelicanrope.com/glowropes.html Apparently, these are kernmantle nylon ropes suitable for caving, with a pigment in the rope that glows. They have it in webbing too. On a related note, their special prusik cord has a tensile strength of 6,200 pounds. http://www.pelicanrope.com/prusikrope.html - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com
[Texascavers] Amistad Project trip in September :
There will be a scheduled project trip to Amistad National Recreation Area near Del Rio, Texas on the weekend of September 11-12, 2010. I have slots for about 15-20 people so this will be a first come-first serve opportunity for folks. The goals for the trip will be to: 1.) Relocate caves and karst features that were noted by the International Boundary Water Commission back in the early 1960s. We have rough locations and descriptions but no one has relocated and surveyed these features since then. 2.) Explore and survey the caves and karst features that have been relocated. 3.) Ridgewalk areas that have no known caves. Camping will be provided by the NPS at the group camping site. For those that want a warm bed and sit-down meal, Del Rio is only about 15 minutes away. Some of the caves may be vertical and/or require digging to open. The flora in the area can only be described as vicious so bring tweezers and long pants. Heavy hiking boots are a must if you don't want the cactus and lechuguilla to cripple you. The weather at that time of the year will be warm and probably dry, so plan accordingly. If you have any questions, please contact me off digest. I hope to see you all out there. There's plenty of caves and karst for everyone ! Jerry Atkinson.

[Texascavers] tour cave question
I was just curious which of the tour caves have closed due to WNS. I saw that Wyandotte Cave in Indiana was closed. ( I believe that is a state owned tour cave, as opposed to a privately owned one. ) I know there has been some debate about tour caves putting up barriers to keep bats out of their caves. A bat with WNS could just as easily fly into a tour cave, and hook up with some other bats there. Which of the tour caves have had bat fatalities from WNS ? Could a tourist somehow spread the virus by taking 2 cave tours in the same clothes? I would not believe that. Are any cavers for the closing of caves that seldom have bats in them ? It seems that if none of the tour caves are going to close, what is the point of closing the caves that are not tour caves? That decision seems to be based purely on economics. I have a feeling that WNS is not high on Obama's plate at the moment. - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com
Re: [Texascavers] tour cave question
David, Regarding your question and comment, Could a tourist somehow spread the virus by taking 2 cave tours in the same clothes? I would not believe that. I don't see why tourists would be any less likely than cavers to spread WNS. At least most organized cavers are now aware of the issue and, where appropriate, are taking steps to decontaminate their equipment between caves. Tourists, however, are much less likely to be knowledgeable about WNS or what to do to avoid its spread. Tourists might wash their clothes between cave tours, but how likely are they to wash or disinfect their shoes? It's also quite possible that they could use other items, such as cameras, coats, purses, gloves, etc., during multiple cave tours without cleaning them between tours. By the way, isn't WNS thought to be caused by a fungus rather than a virus? [Texascavers] Re: tour cave question
At this point, no one knows what causes WNS. There is a fungus associated with it, but saying that a bat has been identified with the _Geomyces destructans_ fungus is NOT the same as saying that WNS has been confirmed at the site. Once again, I point out that for those of you who know absolutely nothing about WNS, especially David L., to please go to the excellent WNS webpages on the BCI, NSS, and USFWS websites. It's a bit of a sad comment on the PrincetonTec in general that so many cavers are knowledgeable about failed lights that need to be returned ! Jerry. In a message dated 7/17/2010 6:03:11 P.M. [Texascavers] cave diving in Saudi Arabia
This from John Pint: Hello from Saudicaves! We have just received a 12-minute video of a visit to Ain Hit (Al- Heet, Ain Hith) cave, one of the few places in the world where you can go cave diving in the desert -- and a landmark in the history both of Saudi Arabia and of the oil industry. [PBSS] July meeting notes
The July 13th meeting of the Permian Basin Speleological Society opened at 1901, an unofficial opening to be sure (no gavel. Again) but an opening nonetheless. Attending: Tony, Bill, Walter, new (also former) member Allen Laman, and Jacqui. Treasurer's report: Bill Bentley reported that we again have $738.40. The health and stability of the treasury moved us right along to new business as Bill made a motion that we lower our dues to $10.00. Bill's motion was seconded by Walter and discussion included the information that we used to need $15.00 from each member because we were mailing out the Hole News and we don't do that anymore. Other facts that came out in discussion: PBSS currently has 15 members. Bill has sent emails to all cavers whose memberships have expired, asking if they would like to re-up. We do have some student members who may have budgeting issues (they are students, after all) so we didn't discuss for long before we decided to create a student rate of $5.00 (full-time students only) and also reduce the associate rate to $5.00. The new rate of $10.00 with associate memberships at $5.00 and full-time students also at $5.00 passed unanimously. The change is effective immediately. Bill is working on a trip to Comanche Springs in Ft. Stockton but it needs to be a survey trip. Bill is looking into finding a sketcher-mapper person who may wish to join us for this trip. Potential dates September 11th or 25th. Lori Hales has a contact for a cave near Balmorhea and she hopes to have us set up for a trip in the fall or winter. A couple of PBSSers have been to this cave a long, long time ago. Walter reported from the Fort Stanton project and passed along a personal invitation from Steve Peerman to Bill Bentley to involve himself in the Fort Stanton Project. (We were assured that all of us are welcome, even without the personal invitation). We decided to poll the membership regarding whether or not we want to do another Carlsbad rock haul. We did not set another Five Mouth dig date but will plan another dig when it cools off a bit. Bill asked if anyone was interested in a not-caving trip to Big Bend as his permit is good through December 2010. We all said yes, we are. We briefly discussed NSS's request that Internal Organizations consider the direction they want to see taken by the NSS and submit appropriate motions to the Board of Governors. No motions came to anybody's mind. We received contact information for a company that makes patches and will make as few as 50. Jacqui will look into how much it would cost for us to have some new PBSS patches made. The meeting closed at 2001 hours. Re: [PBSS] July meeting notes
I'm not a member of PBSS, so take this for what its worth, but I'm very interested in helping with a rock haul, as a few of you may know. I know there are a bit of politics involved, and I hate to see cavers getting the short end when they are only trying to help. Aside from that, I'll bring whatever people want to come help from DFW area grottos if you do decide to do another. Charles On Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 9:59 PM, J.
