[Texascavers] driving question - TAG area

2010-07-22 Thread David
Has anyone driven from the New Orleans area towards Roanoke, Virginia?

Google has 2 routes. One going thru Chattanooga, Tennessee,
about 13 1/2 hours and the other thru Atlanta which is 14 1/2 hours.

I am leaning towards the longer route thru Atlanta.

I think I am asking what the drive between Atlanta and Charlotte, North
Carolina is like. And how it compares to the drive from Chattanooga
to Blacksburg, Virginia.

Please e-mail me privately.

[Texascavers] Re: first cave trip, and monkeys

2010-07-22 Thread Logan McNatt

Dave,
I recommend Carlsbad Caverns, which was my first cave trip when I was 2
1/2. I agree with Stephan that you need to wait awhile so she might
remember it. And as Pete implied, pictures will help jog her memory. I
have photos of me at the entrance of Carlsbad with a huge bandage
wrapped around my right hand. We had stopped at a roadside zoo in White
City, where the old man who owned the place had let the
chimpanzee/tailless monkey/ape/Cheetah out of the cage and forgotten
about it. My brother and I wandered by, the chimp put my hand in his
mouth and started dragging me off, my brother ran back to my Dad
screaming "A monkey's got Logan", and Dad came to the rescue.

I still have the scar on my wrist, and I think my very first visual
memory is--sadly, not of the cave--but of that chimp ambling toward me.
But that's not nearly as scary as the thought of seeing the corpse of
Floyd Collins wearing diapers.

By age 4 they are big enough to crawl into a tight space where you can't

about falling down tight pits. That could take another 4-40 years ;-)

Wes Skiles' Family Statement:

Thursday, July, 22, 2010

The Skiles family has asked me to distribute this statement:

Wes Skiles died while diving off West Palm Beach on Wednesday, July 21.

He was conducting a routine filming dive when the accident occurred. No
one else was injured.

There are no further details regarding the accident at this time. The
exact cause has not yet been determined and we are awaiting official
reports.

Wes has been a tireless advocate for springs, springsheds and the
conservation and protection of Florida’s water resources.

At the time of his death, he was excited about the upcoming issue of
National Geographic Magazine, which features his photographs and the
cover shot. We appreciate all of the concern and outpouring of support.

We celebrate his extraordinary life and ask you to do the same.

The family requests that you respect their privacy at this time.

Memorial arrangements will be announced in the near future.

Well, David, I hate to burst your bubble, but the storm is so far
away, no one knows where it is going. Predicting hurricane tracks is like
predicting weather in TX. You can make a guess, but you will be wrong. If
you are right, it is an anomaly and the weather will change so you are wrong

This might preclude Dave from taking his daughter there; I somehow

[Texascavers] a good first cave

2010-07-22 Thread David
As far as commercial caves go, I like to recommend
Alabaster Cavern's in Oklahoma.

This is a good first cave for anybody that already has an interest
in caves, because it has a different speleogenesis than
most commercial caves.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/9232573@N02/2563288068/in/set-72157605507013982/

According the the authority of Wikipedia, it is the largest natural
gypsum cave in the world that is open to the public.

( as opposed to the largest un-natural gypsum cave ?? )

I wish it were not such a long drive. I want to take my daughter

[Texascavers] Monkeys, Wes

2010-07-22 Thread BMorgan994

I'm no expert on any of this, but is not all or part of Hispanola a well
traveled craton? There are other otherwise ancient inexplicable critters
there too like the solenodon. Old world monkeys have tails too, but
diverged
from new world monkeys a very long time ago. Most people think Primates
are a
recent group but that is just not the case. If I am not mistaken they
have
been around since before the dinosaurs looked up to see the comet. No
time
to fact check any of this.

Here in Hogtown we are crushed. Wes was the best, larger than life, a
motorcycle riding, beer drinking, bad joke telling, world traveling, deep
diving
superhero. This right after his best bud Pete Butt got gobbled by a gator.
He will be sorely missed!

Well, David, I hate to burst your bubble, but the storm is so far
away, no one knows where it is going. Predicting hurricane tracks is like
predicting weather in TX. You can make a guess, but you will be wrong. If

So, if they're digital artifacts, you're saying that the
camera/computer/digitizer is sorta like on an acid trip trying to fill
in the blanks created by a lack of processable information from a
glass-smooth, neutral colored water surface? It's recording the
results of an open-ended search for matching data? Seems silly to me,
but maybe.

I've worked with aerial mapping for years, and I'm pretty sure this is a
common problem caused by the compression software used to reduce the
file sizes on aerial imagery. When the compression software sees areas
of nearly consistent color it tries to build rectangular blocks and
store them as a single item instead of referencing each pixel
individually. When these consistent areas (like ponds) are closer to
the black end of the color spectrum the software gets especially
confused and starts building the rectangles in random patterns and with
slight variations of dark colors.

If you look around Google earth, especially in the Canada area posted
earlier you'll see hundreds of examples of this rectangular compression
confusion.

[Texascavers] Tropical Storm Bonnie

2010-07-22 Thread David
The tropical depression that is currently north of eastern Cuba
is forecasted to become Tropical Storm Bonnie tonight.

It is headed for the Beaumont area just like Hurricane Rita,
to make landfall on Monday night, and be in Texarkana,
by Tuesday.

This could effect cavers heading on a road-trips, maybe
even towards Arkansas, as it could dump a lot of rain.

I can't leave before the storm passes, or changes course and heads
further south for Port Aransas ( just kidding Sheryl ).

If the storm moves up the coast along the route that cavers are
driving to the convention, that could make for a 2,000 mile wet
journey.

World class cavediving film maker, Wes Skiles, passed away yesterday (July 21).
He was working on a video off West Palm Marathon, FL. He was on a rebreather at
the time. I have no other details right now.

My condolences to his family, and many caving buddies.

Called? I could call Gill an ape, but he is not an ape.

From wikipedia:

Aside from humans (genus Homo), the macaques are the most widespread primate genus, ranging from Japan to Afghanistan and, in the case of the Barbary Macaque, to North Africa. Twenty-two macaque species are currently recognised, and they include some of the monkeys best known to non-zoologists, such as the Rhesus Macaque, Macaca mulatta, and the Barbary Macaque, M. sylvanus, a colony of which lives on the Rock of Gibraltar. Although several species lack tails, and their common names therefore refer to them as apes, these are true monkeys, with no greater relationship to the true apes than any other Old World monkeys.Jul 22, 2010 08:09:11 AM, trog...@cavechat.org wrote:

Re: [Texascavers] Monkey skeleton found in underwater cave...

2010-07-22 Thread Gill Edigar
For one thing, they said that the ancestors of these monkeys moved in
over 10 million years ago. There weren't any local Indians keeping
pets at that time. For another thing, sea level has been much lower at
various times allowing dry land crossing between what are now
islands--not to mention plate tilting and other movement that would
have affected the sea level and land elevations of the entire region.
And yet another thing is that a lot of animals are carried down
flooding rivers on logs and natural rafts and sent out to sea by
currents and winds to either die on the ocean or to be washed up on
shore--often on islands. And what makes anybody think this beast came
from Africa? Did it have a tail? Old World monkey are tailless; New
World monkeys have tails. Are they even related to each other?
