It’s now a new year and I am compelled to remind D&P Trip Leaders MUST be
current TCMA members as required by the management plan. If you are planning to
lead an upcoming trip or planning for a future trip it would be good to check
your membership status. Thanks!!

[Texascavers] [TCR 2017 Success!]

2017-10-15 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
Hey everyone, another successful Texas cavers reunion is behind us now, well
done! Good job everybody! It was awesome! IT WAS!

Not much to report in the Lost & Found Department this year, for once, yay!

The owner is happy, the park is clean. Next years deposit is paid, no date set
yet.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!

I didn’t want to harsh your mellow, on Saturday night, but 2017 was my last TCR
as Director. I did six TCRs. I’m sorry folks, it was fun, rewarding and an
adventure! My resignation is on a high point, I feel, with TCR is in good shape
with a head start on 2018, with a year to solve my absence.

The music was very very good!
The food was very very good! Great job!!
We had INTERNATIONAL Cavers visit from Mexico!
We had David Locklear!
The NSS represented!
The Texas Contingent represented!
The Aggies had a challenging Speleolympics course!
There was a REBELAY course!
We had a hot tub, sauna AND spring water!
There was a SLIDESHOW!
There were POWERWAGONS in service!
There was a HUGE board game.
There were barbarian Viking HOARDS!!
We had MUD GLADIATORS!!
There was schmoozing, I SAW IT!
People smiled!
What more can you ask for?
I’m happy!

Thank you

2017-10-04 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
Eight days away! Temperatures are forecast to be really nice, current estimates
are are a high of 73° Friday! Please bring cash. I’ll open the gate Thursday
around 1 pm, then close it just after dark, then open it again Friday morning.
If you plan on arriving after dark Thursday, better let me know BEFORE
Thursday. No glass near the river. Pets and children are welcome if they are
well behaved, you will be expected to pick up after them, fights will result in
ejection. Please, no percussion instruments at the hot tub, once again the
rental house at the dam is occupied by a deputy, we want to keep him happy. If
you see non Cavers in the park please let me know, it is our private reunion.
EVERYONE WILL SIGN A PARK LIABILITY WAIVER. Some ice will be available, but
don’t expect us to keep your cooler filled with it, the cooks have priority.
The cooks have been working hard to provide us with a meal Saturday evening and
there will be breakfast fundraising too! As usual Paradise Canyon has cabins
and one RV for rent, please make arraignments through them. There are now a few
RV spaces with electricity and water too, also make arrangements through
Paradise Canyon. Anyone needing directions contact me I’d be happy to share. As
usual I am excited and look forward to seeing you there!

[Texascavers] [Texas Cavers Reunion]

2017-09-11 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
"Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you can be crunchy and taste good
with ketchup."

Paradise Canyons gates open after noon this October 12 to the 19th, for the
40th annual Texas Cavers Reunion! Vikings & Barbarians!

Word has been out for some time now, and the time is almost here!

Cavers have been caving and are ready to tell their tales! Let's get together
with our caver family in an awesome setting and enjoy each other's company.
Many new cavers need to be introduced to the old timers & traditions of Texas
Caving!

Contests, T-Shirts, Swimming, Prizes, the great outdoors and a Parade!

$30 for individuals
$15 for old timers (Odin gets in for free)
$15 for kids
$80 for families

Come support and celebrate your Caver family!

The 40th annual Texas Cavers Reunion will be at Paradise Canyon park below
Medina Lake on the beautiful Medina River. There will be the usual revelry!
Rope contests, surveying contests, mud wrestling contests, speleolympic
contests, costume contest, kegs of Shiner & Lobo beer, story telling, swimming,
parade, hot tubbing, door prizes, kayaking, river tubing, slides, sashaying,
mooching, lying, goofing off, horse play, dumbassery, giddiness, hugging,
handshaking, camping, mocking, and general capering about. Come early, on
Thursday for the primo campsites. There are four cabins and an RV, plus RV
spots for rent through Paradise Canyon, please contact them for price and
arrangements.

If you are a Saxon, Viking, Barbarian, caver, spelunker, troglodyte, cave
manager, cave guide, cave owner, cave archeologist, cave lover, cave explorer,
cave diver, cave biologist, cave geologist, cave hydrologist, cave climber,
cave squeezer, cave aficionado, cave critter, or caver supporter, caver
financier, cave surveyor, cave mapper, naked caver, cave gear vendor, long
suffering cave spouse, cave divorcee, cave widow please consider attending. If
you aren't, you will be vetted, someone better vouch for you or we may use you
as a bad example and let the Viking hoards have you.

If you have children or pets, please keep them leashed, clean up after them
(bring your own poo bags). They are welcome but we expect them to be quiet and
well mannered. Poorly mannered children and pets will be handed over to Grendel
for disposal.

Please bring your own utensils for the Big Feed on Saturday night.

Please:
NO GLASS CONTAINERS
in the park. None. If you are a cook, you are not included in this mandate,
unless you go near the river. Also, no driving the vehicles to the lower level
camping areas, the owner has installed rock walls and planters that now prevent
this, sorry.

Please help us keep the park owner happy with us by being conscientious with
trash, the park is open to the public during the rest of the year and bottle
caps, twist ties and other minutea of debris gets left behind. With so many
environmentalists present at once during our event if everyone picked up a few
things the park would SPARKLE, so will the owner's smile!

Create a prize winning, memorable Barbarian or Viking costume! Get on it!!

BEYOND HERE BE DRAGONS

[Texascavers] [TCR Food]

2017-02-10 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
Currently TCR doesn't have a head cook, or menu. There have been complaints,
rumors and talk about this subject. It seems there are three options: (a) fend
for yourselves, (b) caterer, (c) volunteers come forward to cook.
Each has its benefit and drawbacks. I need to get a feel for options.

I’ve found that TCR's biggest critics are NEVER step up and help. NEVER. You
got attitude because of your nasty criticisms. Touché.

Charles, get over it. Paradise Canyon agreed to a good price if we kept TCR
there for the next 5 years. If no one hasn't noticed things are getting more
expensive these days. If you can find a better price than what we are currently
paying with as many amenities, showers, river, electricity, bathrooms, ice,

Well, seeing you haven't come to a -TCR- (Texas Cavers Reunion, been named that
for only the last THIRTY EIGHT YEARS) you have totally missed out on some fine
cooking by the experts we have that ACTUALLY STEPPED UP and VOLUNTEERED. Stefan

I've even posted in the NSS news with my contact info for just such

Re: [Texascavers] The Texas Caver

2016-10-26 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
As a trained and educated artist, recent volunteer Texas Cavers Reunion cat
herder, and past Texas Caver Editor (a particularly thankless job) I have
always found plenty of folks to endlessly criticize or complain, it's an
integral part of the job and one learns to recognize the difference between
"criticism" & "opinion". However, novices (volunteers who stepped up to do a
job when no one else would) aren't usually trained or skilled or ready to deal
with criticism. It can be counterproductive.

At TCR typically I ask critics to step up and help solve whatever they think
isn't happening to their expectation. One of two things happens; they step up
and do something -or- they shut up and do nothing. In my experience the vast
majority of complainers choose the latter.

At TCR, lots of people voice ideas about how it -should- be done, and I get
tons of criticism of how "it got done wrong", or how "it should be done in the
future" or how "it was done better in the past". Plenty of suggestions, oodles
of constructive ideas. But when it come time for those same volunteers to step
up and stand behind their suggestions and help - very very few ever follow
through. Ever. They usually disappear with the words "how about helping out
then?" The ones that actually see the job done are the ones who want it done
and do it.

Criticism can be constructive, such as when someone expects it or asks for it.
Or the critic is willing to step in and help firsthand, which is usually
welcomed. Especially useful are wisdom and experience. Otherwise it's just
opinion.

When someone is struggling on the side of a busy highway trying to change a
flat tire, it's real easy to drive past and shout out the window "lift with
your knees!"

Re: [Texascavers] potential future TCR attendees

2016-10-18 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
No such thing as a free lunch. David, go ahead and start putting a hundred
dollar bill in the TCR bank each month and by the time 12 months rolls around
we can implement this scheme. Double that amount and we can pay for a caterer,
triple that hundred dollar deposit and we can add a live band too.

Is there anyone in the Austin area, or passing through, able to pick up the two
boxes of shirts and see them to this years reunion? Wednesday is his best day

[Texascavers] [Texas Cavers Reunion!]

2016-10-10 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
Paradise Canyons gates open after noon this Thursday, October 13 to the 19th,
for the 39th annual Texas Cavers Reunion! Magical Forest Creatures.

Word has been out for some time now, and the time is almost here!

Cavers have been caving and are ready to tell their tales! Let's get together
with our caver family in an awesome setting and enjoy each other's company.
Many new cavers need to be introduced to the old timers & traditions of Texas
Caving! Contests, T-Shirts, Swimming, door prizes, the great outdoors and a
Parade!

$30 for individuals
$15 for old timers
$15 for kids
$80 for families

Come support and celebrate your caving family!

The 39th annual Texas Cavers Reunion will be at Paradise Canyon park below
Medina Lake on the currently raging Medina River. There will be the usual
revelry! Rope climbing contests, surveying contests, mud wrestling contests,
speleolympic contests, costume contest, kegs of Shiner beer, story telling,
swimming, parade, hot tubbing, door prizes, kayaking, river tubing, slides,
sashaying, mooching, lying, goofing off, horse play, dumbassery, giddiness,
hugging, handshaking, camping, mocking, and general capering about. Come early,
on Thursday for the primo campsites. There are four cabins and an RV for rent
through Paradise Canyon, please contact them for price and arrangements.

If you are a caver, spelunker, troglodyte, cave manager, cave guide, cave
owner, cave archeologist, cave lover, cave explorer, cave diver, cave
biologist, cave geologist, cave hydrologist, cave climber, cave squeezer, cave
aficionado, cave critter, or caver supporter, caver financier, cave surveyor,
cave mapper, naked caver, cave gear vendor, long suffering cave spouse, cave
divorcee, cave widow please consider attending. If you aren't, you will be
vetted, someone better vouch for you or we may use you as a bad example and let
the fairies have you.

If you have children or pets, please keep them leashed, clean up after them
(bring your own poo bags). We expect them to be quiet and well mannered. Poorly
mannered children and pets will be handed over to the cooks or Ogres for
disposal.

Please bring your own utensils for the Big Feed on Saturday night.

Please:
NO GLASS CONTAINERS
in the park. None. If you are a cook, you are not included in this mandate,
unless you go near the river. Also, no longer driving the vehicles to the lower
level camping areas, the owner has installed lots of new plumbing for lawns and
has suffered breaks from vehicular traffic.

Please help us keep the park owner happy with us by being conscientious with
trash, the park is open to the public during the rest of the year and bottle
caps, twist ties and other minutea of debris gets left behind. With so many
environmentalists present at once during our event, if everyone picked up a few
things the park would SPARKLE, so would the owners smile!

Create a prize winning, memorable Magical Forest Creature costume! Get on it!!

[Texascavers] [TCR '16]

2016-06-03 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
132 days from the time of this post will be the 39th annual Texas Cavers
Reunion at Paradise Canyon park below Medina Lake on the currently raging
Medina River. There will be the usual revelry! Rope climbing contests,
surveying contests, mud wrestling contests, speleolympic contests, costume
contest, food eating conte… err, not so much a contest…, dishwashing contes…,
crap… YES - a DISHWASHING contest, kegs of beer, story telling, swimming,
parade, hot tubbing, door prizes, kayaking, river tubing, slides, sashaying,
mooching, lying, goofing off, horse play, dumbassery, giddiness, hugging,
handshaking, camping, mocking, and general capering about. Come early, on
Thursday for the primo campsites. There are four cabins and an RV for rent
through Paradise Canyon, please contact them for price and arrangements.
Registration costs to be announced later.

Poorly
mannered children and pets will be handed over to the cooks or Ogres for
disposal.

NO GLASS CONTAINERS in the park. None. If you are a cook, you are not included
in this mandate, unless you go near the river.

Please bring your own utensils for the Big Feed on Saturday night.

Mine too!

Sometime after the Fourth of July the park owner has requested some work from
us to help keep costs down, he has some brush clearing he'd appreciate. Plus
it's an excellent opportunity to gather firewood for the hot tub and fires.
More to come later on this. If you think you may like to help, shoot me an
email at don at oztotl dot com.

You have 132 days to create a prize winning, memorable Magical Forest Creature
costume! Get on it!!

can get materials out there.

[Texascavers] [Texas Cavers Reunion 2016]

2016-05-28 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
It's official, Texas Cavers Reunion has its venue. The water is once again
flowing over the lower retention dam into Paradise Canyon park, and hopefully
will continue to do so through October 13 to October 16, 2016. The corn is tall
there outside of Castroville on the flowing Medina River, actually the water is
currently OVER the retaining walls in Paradise Canyon park. There is now a
playground and a beautiful new restroom and shower facility.

There is a theme for our doo-dah parade too. Several good ideas were put forth
and in the end I required a secret vote from my consultants which ended in a
three way tie requiring me to bring in my heavy hitter tie breaker:
Magical Forest Creatures!
The rains have made the woods and countryside very very happy and green and the
magic is strong now. The gnomes, fairies, trolls and Hodags are proliferating
and putting on their summer coats of algae and mosses and lichens. The
unicorns, Pegasus and griffons were out grazing along the green riverfront
under the sycamores and cypress today. I think I even saw a wampus cat
frolicking with a zoat. Certainly Bigfoot lurks, and I swear I smelled a
skunk-ape.

More information to come, stay tuned

[Texascavers] D&P Shower Slab Pour Work Weekend II

2016-03-04 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
Gill Ediger and Lee Jay Graves and I (and Jenni) are out at D&P presently
preparing for next weekends work weekend/concrete pour ((--Take notice!-- A
year-old Facebook post was somehow resurrected and misleadingly gives the date
for the work weekend as the 27-28 - which was the date LAST YEAR we had the
trench digging work weekend)). I need everyone involved to please respond and
confirm you are indeed helping, and if you (texascavers e-list) are interested
in helping please contact me at d...@oztotl.com (I may have been told you
wanted to help but got sloppy and neglected to put you down). We need a
headcount! I've heard from a handful tonight already, THANKS!! Several have
backed out as was expected.

We have cooks already, what we need are strong backs. "Strong like bull smart
like tractor" types. We had an awesome bunch do good prep work last weekend and
we are ready to pour concrete.

Next weekend we will be running cement mixers and wheel barrows constantly
until we've completed it. I have 42 bags of concrete presently and we have two
mixers and two wheel barrows and I expect I'll be retrieving more concrete
tomorrow from Del Rio. Bring 5 gallons of water or more (for your own personal
use) and clothes that can get filthed. We plan to take shifts at the task.

[Texascavers] [TCR] [Hot Tub Firewood]

2015-10-09 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
If you are attending TCR next weekend please bear in mind that good folks are
volunteering for many things so you may enjoy the camaraderie. For instance,
John Schneider is providing a trailer of firewood for the hot tub and sauna.
However John is just one guy, who's doctor has directed him to do no heavy
lifting. He has a loaded trailer, he has asked for help to unload at Paradise
Canyon this Sunday and no one has stepped up to help. If I end up cancelling my
plans with my brother Sunday, I will, and I'll go help John, then I'll
rightfully claim that amount of time in the hot tub for myself whenever I want.
Perhaps Saturday night after the festivities I'll go claim my hour or two for
myself and everyone can stand around and wait for me to get my hot tub fix...

[Texascavers] [TCR][Registration & Vendors]

2015-10-05 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
Be sure to bring trade goods, cash talks.
Paradise Canyon is sheltered from cellular service by the canyon walls so don't
expect credit card service at registration & vendors etc. Bring T-Shirts &
trade goods for the Caver T's Tradin' Post.
There will be a carousel projector available at the slide show area too.
Bring your own grog cups and vittles kit.
There will be books for sale, caving organization meetings, mud wrestling and
vendors needing cash.

[Texascavers] [TCR][1 Month Away (o.k., 33 Days)]

2015-09-12 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
Texas Cavers Reunion is a smidge over a month away, and I am EXCITED! Hopefully
El Niño and Oztol will grant us cool weather without a deluge of rainfall, but
we all are used to such things and will make the best of it. Events are being
organized as I type this, SpeleOlympics will be insidious, Survey will be
tricky, Rope Climbing will be exhausting and CaveSim will require care and
precision and the hot tub will be, well, hot. The river is running nicely and
the park is better than ever with a new playscape and new waterfront walls and
a new water feature. Stefan is working on another delicious menu and Bill is
arranging kegs of beer to wash it all down (thanks guys!). There is a crew
dedicated to a slide show area and another crew that'll make sure the Loo's all
have TP. Yet more hard working and dedicated volunteers making sure you can eat
breakfast and get coffee Saturday morning and another group hosting a Wine
Tasting Friday evening. There will be live music featured by the band Carnys
and rumor has it there will be a Bouncy House too. Vendors are gearing up for
your caving related purchases including the TSA Store. There will be a Caving
T-Shirt Trading Post trading for cash, goods, small children, livestock or
booze. There will be gatherings, groupings, assemblages, couplings, meetings,
get togethers, encounters, confluences, convergences and possibly nudity and
near nakedness. There will be a parade, costumes, prizes, awards and giggling &
pointing.

I want everyone to be friendly and gregarious and in a good mood. If you, your
children or dogs are mean spirited, loud annoying barkers or prone to pooping
on the ground, fighting or stealing - don't come or bring the poopers,
fighters, barkers or stealers. Fighting, barking & pooping on the ground or
stealing won't be tolerated, we will make fun, take & post pictures and then
ostracize.

Remember, please, this is a privately owned park whose owner is caver friendly
- lets help keep it that way. No glass containers and help make the place
better than we found it by cleaning up before we leave, so we can come back in
the future. Those of you who rented cabins, please pay Paradise Canyon directly
as TCR isn't involved. Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints
kill nothing but time & bring cash, faster horses and more whiskey.

[Texascavers] [TCR][Don's T-Shirt Trading Post]

2015-09-06 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
This year I will be hosting "Don's T-Shirt Trading Post". I'll have some caving
shirts up for trade & barter, so remember to bring your own gently used caving
T's (or trade items) for trade to TCR.

[Texascavers] [SuperSpeleOlympics]

2015-08-31 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
"Advanced SpeleOlympics"?

An intriguing idea has surfaced for this years TCR. This idea may incorporate
elements of a re-belay course, CaveSim, squeezebox, water feature and possibly
short adverse survey.
"SuperSpeleOlympics"?

The concern is twofold: it may not happen again (CaveSim availability and
cost), and concern for those who would normally do Speleolympics but who don't
have adequate vertical skills.

Can we get regular Speleolympics Officials from the past involved in this topic?

Discuss:

Yes, they just bring TP, and distribute to the portojohns as needed. No one
should run out of TP. Simple, once a day, go check them, leave TP as needed.

Dishwashing is self explanatory. As is the Slideshow Nerd & the Speleolympics

[Texascavers] [Texas Cavers Reunion 2015]

2015-07-22 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
Only 85 days left until the 2015 Texas Cavers Reunion at Paradise Canyon below
Medina Lake!

The event begins when I open the park around noon on Thursday, October 15.
Currently there is good water flow at Paradise Canyon and Red has made many
improvements to it and it looks really nice. There should be more portapotties
and ice to sell. Along with the usual activities of swimming, relaxing and
socializing there will be vendors, CaveSim, rope climbing, mud wrestling,
surveying, Speleolympics, door prizes, live music, parading, clowns, flirting,
camping, wine tasting, giggling, slide shows, food, hot tubbing, hammocking,
tubing, fishing, costumes, late nights, early meetings, memberships,
fellowships, napping, cooking, smiling, beverages, clowns, books, stories,
nudity, lies, Aggies, sashaying, laughing, stumbling, beer, hugs, handshakes,
guffaws, breakfast tacos, kissing, well behaved dogs, stupid grins (ok, that's
just me), pointing, registering, planning, discussing, reminiscing, sauna-ing,
friends, photographing, Cavers, dishwashing and hopefully showering.

Like usual, well behaved pets & children are welcome, PLEASE be sure to pick up
after them. Fighting dogs or people and thieves will be dealt with harshly, for
our amusement, then banished.

Traditionally the south end of the campground is the quiet end and the dam nude
end is a tad louder. Sadly, the rule still stands about percussion musical
instruments at the hot tub end. The "Doo-Dah" parade has a Circus theme this
year, and naturally there will be prizes for the favorite costume!

Bring your favorite camp chairs, hammocks, inner tubes, kayaks, bicycles,
bedding, tents, refreshments, snacks, cold beverages, climbing gear and survey
instruments. Don't forget, bring a good attitude and a smile! See you there!

[Texascavers] [CaveSim at TCR!]

2015-06-10 Thread Don Arburn via Texascavers
Cavers, I am pleased to announce that Dave Jackson and his cave simulator,
CaveSim, is available to come to TCR at Paradise Canyon this October.
Available. He needs fuel money to get here. Two individuals and two grottos
have already committed to donating to the cause - to the tune of $700! Thanks
Sheryl, Jerry, Bexar and PBSS grottos! We are halfway there! We need a total of
$1,500 for a day visit. An additional day would be an additional $300.
The CaveSim is an awesome facsimile and caver skills tester. I personally took
part in Alabama, during the NSS convention, in running it, it was VERY popular.
The CaveSim was at Paradise Canyon a couple years back and there are local
Cavers defending time & score titles!
I challenge you.
In addition to the REAL caves in the park, let's get the CaveSim here too!
TCR is forking over $50 to help, bringing the grand total to $750, what can
your group do?
