Re: [PBSS] CREE lights

2014-07-30 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
Those black and red lights Alex and I have are CREE. They get pretty hot and
only last about 2 hours (the type we have) but they work well. I think the one
I have is on it's last leg after many years of caving. I got it wet in Abyss
climbing out the waterfall last time we went there.

3000 lumens sounds awesome, is that a handheld or head mount? Also, that
spotlight I have has 3 CREE bulbs. I've smashed it up pretty good now but it's
also been pretty solid on many trips. It's suppose to be 10 hours on high.

Greetings,
Anyone have any experiences with CREE headlights? Good? Bad? other wise...
It says 3000 Lumens, It cause pain when I try to look in the beam... And leaves
a streak like you have looked at a welding light ... temporary though...
It is bright and I have tested it on two 2800 mAh 3.7 v batteries for
48 hours and there is still usable light although not as bright as it was...

Re: [SWR] More on Radon

2014-07-25 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
I don't think the picture went through earlier, it does plays a role in it but
there are definitely other reasons because surrounding states like Missouri,
Illinois, Michigan and Nebraska, all much lower levels. It has to do with how
much radon is able to escape from the ground. I am not a geologist and have
zero education in rock but published papers say that during the last ice age,
rock (which clearly had radium in it) from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ontario
were ground up and pushed to Iowa from a glacier, where they were deposited.
What people should do in that part of the country, and really anywhere if your
home has a basement or even high ground level readings, is install a fan and
pipe to the roof. The EPA has a simple picture on their page. Get the air
moving in the basement and allow it to escape up the pipe and out of the house.
You can make a basement as safe as anywhere else with a little effort.

Is the reason "the most dangerous place to live in the US is Iowa" due to the
fact that most houses in the Upper Midwest have full basements that get used

Because people seem to be interested in this topic I've included a few pictures
followed by a copy and paste from the EPA's page on lung cancer incidence and
Radon exposure in homes, but cancer is indiscriminate so if your exposure comes
from the office, your basement, your cigarettes (which contain radon as a
byproduct of phosphate fertilizers used in tobacco crops) or your favorite cave
it doesn't matter. Exposure is exposure. The thing with smoking is you are
breathing radon in every time you smoke so there is a chronic exposure. In the
world of radiation safety there is an acronym, "ALARA". Which means As Low As
Reasonably Achievable and works of the basis that any exposure to ionizing
radiation CAN cause harm, though it often doesn't, but it could. In case the
pictures don't go through the most dangerous place to live in the US is Iowa
but the 3rd picture shows that most uranium deposits are in Arizona, Utah,
Nevada, Wyoming, etc... So uranium doesn't equate to radon, the porosity of the
bedrock and soil have everything to do with radon escape. Medically, and
historically, doctors used to use needles that had radium to treat cancer. The
radium was encased with a double wall of stainless steel and that's plenty to
prevent any radon from leaking. The radium decay also emits gamma radiation,
which is energy, and some passes through the steel and interacts with tissue
when placed in a person. The problem arises when you have a radioactive needle
that has a half like of 1622 years that could be stolen and used for bad
things. You'll also see that on a World scale the US is pretty safe. The worlds
highest levels are found in the Czech Republic at 3.8 pCi/L or 140 Bq/ m3.
Second is South Korea (though I imagine there isn't data for North Korea) at
3.4 pCi/L or 124.9 Br/m3. Us averages at 1.3 pCi/ L or 48 Bq/ m3. Typical air
has about .4 pCi/L so if your a hippy and live outside, you're a bit safer from
Radon but more prone to snakebites (give and take right). To the point Louise
made, the risk radon poses is exposure of the lungs to alpha particles, which
cannot penetrate tissue (like the skin). So if you have a history of lung
disease or cancer your risk increases as the exposure to radon increases
because the radon is introduced from respiration. If your history is cervical
or prostate or brain cancer, radon provides no additional risk. You've all
probably seen a movie where a person has been in a radiation area and they are
being scrubbed down by people with long handled brushes with water and soap,
that is to remove the sticky byproducts of radon decay from the clothing before
they undress. The masks prevent the alpha particles from being inhaled.

So how much radon is in the area is important, the permeability of the rock
determines if the radon can escape from the rock, air flow determines if the
radon collects or is spread out. To what was said earlier,

subsequently radon removal in caves..." I'm not saying if this statement is
true then..., I'm saying if a cave breathes there is air exchange and if a mine
breathes there is air exchange and if there isn't air exchange radon can build
up to unsafe levels. The level of exchange determines the level of radon not
removed as a result of air flow regardless of the reason of that flow (natural
or manmade). And just like a whitewater river has rapids and pools and eddies,
so do caves. Some areas have good air movement, others have pockets of stale
air, all within the same cave.

Re: [SWR] BLM reopens Wyoming's Natural Trap Cave

2014-07-25 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
So I've been debating on if I should reply to this or not because what seems
like a simple question has a very complicated answer. First, I don't know
anything about the cavers mentioned but I do know about radiation and legal
exposure limits. Geiger Counters are all different and have different levels of
sensitivity but the Geiger counter here at work "maxes" out at 2000 mR/hr. In
radiation and radiation safety there are several different ways to measure
things, for example "R" is exposure in air, REM is in an occupational worker,
Gy or Sv is in a person who is deliberately being treated with radiation,
gamma, beta, Ci, Bq... All different levels of radioactivity. To overly
simplify, I will try and interchange them roughly. So, maxes out at 2000mR/ hr.
An accepted dose for a non radiation worker, which is all of you, is 100 mR/
year (which indicates a single exposure like in a cave) or 500 mR from multiple
brief exposures. So, if a Geiger counter were being maxed out, you could not
legally be allowed in that cave, nor would you want to be in that cave.

So that's a dose for a person, for an area a person can step into, an
uncontrolled area can emit 5000 mR/ year or 10 mR/ week. Again, 2000 mR/ hr
versus 10mR/ week. Big difference.

As is mentioned below the danger from radiation in caves comes from Radon
exposure, which is a gas that decays alpha particles (big damaging particles)
as does its daughter decay elements, as well as electrons and photons until it
eventually becomes stable, as lead, some 20 something years later. Uranium to
Radium to Radon to Lead with a whole bunch of other elements in between. Radium
takes 1600 years to decay, but in a non ventilated area that decay (radon), can
build up in a gas form (which is why basements in some areas are ventilated),
so it's always there as a constant byproduct of the amount and type of rock in
the area. As a gas Radon is breathed into the lungs and since it's half life is
only about 4 days it could decay as or just after you breathe it in. It's
daughter products are "sticky" and can adhere to dust in the air or tissue in
your lungs. Alpha particles have a relative biological effectiveness 20 times
higher than x-ray, like the type you could be exposed to getting a CT scan. So
an element that emits a 300kv photon carries an RBE of 300, an element emitting
a 300kv alpha particle carries an RBE of 6000. Radon exposure doesn't lead to
death ( at least it's not well documented unless you piss off the Russian
government) but it does cause lung cancer, 21,000 deaths a year and is the
second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking and the number one cause in
non smokers.

Hope that help. I doubt anyone was flying rock out and if they were it wasn't
because of radiation levels. They might have limited access because of higher
(but still legally safe) radon levels.

It should also be noted that 200,000 mR causes acute radiation sickness, as was
the case among atomic bomb survivors, so 200,000 divided by 2000mR/ hr would be
100 hours in a cave, after which you have a 5% chance of dying. BUT radon=
alpha= RBE of 20= 5 hours. At that level, after 20 hours the odds of dying go
up to 80-100 percent after suffering for weeks and weeks as your cells
basically explode one by one. Again, this is all a gross simplification.

Carl, your question just posted, there are completely different guidelines for
mining uranium as well. It's said caves breathe, mines don't. If that's true
there is air exchange and subsequently radon removal in caves (which leads to
consistent levels of radon- not increasing or decreasing left alone at 5 pm
during the summer when its 95 degrees outside from year to year) but not in
mines. Temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, all effect pockets of radon.
That is why mines are required to have, among other reasons, awesome
ventilation systems. "Some types of rocks have higher than average uranium
contents. These include light-colored volcanic rocks, granites, dark shales,
sedimentary rocks that contain phosphate, and metamorphic rocks derived from
these rocks. These rocks and their soils may contain as much as 100 ppm
uranium. Layers of these rocks underlie various parts of the United States." US
Geological Survey. A "working level" of a uranium mine is allowed to be 7000
Bq/ m3 in air. It is of interest that some non ventilated mines have reached
levels of 1,000,000 Bq/ m3 (might want to make a call to OSHA on that one).

[PBSS] December Meeting

2012-12-07 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
Cavers,

I do not have any significant meeting items to discuss in December. I am
willing to compile a presentation of PBSS caving activities from 2012 if
anyone is interested in having a Christmas party. I would be willing to
host the party at my house in Odessa on the 15th of December if there
are enough interested participants. If not we'll have our traditional
monthly meeting on Tuesday at Murray's, in which I could still show the
presentation, but I don't have any business to discuss. Please let me
know your interest and availability over the weekend and I'll send out a
final determination by Monday.

[PBSS] November Meeting

2012-11-20 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
The November meeting of the PBSS was held on Tuesday the 13th. The
meeting began at 7:00 pm and was attended by:

Matthew Ormsby, Tristan Ormsby, Ben Fowler, Bill Bentley, Walter
Feaster, Rule Metcalf, Patrick Ray, Laura Liem and Luke and Kat (whose
last names I obviously don't know).

A financial report was given by Walter. New memberships and bat stickers
brought the clubs total to 871.79.

Bill gave a brief report on the TCR. Approximately 360 individuals
participated.

Some time was spent speaking about the upcoming trip to the Deep and
Punkin Nature Preserve. Interested parties were given directions. This
trip is scheduled for Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th 5 miles from
Carta Valley Texas near Del Rio. Anyone interested in going that reads
this remailer should contact me by Wednesday the 21st. Information on
both caves can be found on the TCMA website.

Interest was also gauged in participating in a December trip. The
interest seems to exist but a consensus on a good weekend varies.

A few minutes were also spent discussing the Christmas party but a date
and location were not yet decided.

This very short meeting was officially ended at 7:20 pm; however we
spent another hour looking at maps and discussing gear preferences.

Sincerely,
Matthew Ormsby

[PBSS] October Meeting

2012-10-10 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
Greetings All,

The October 9th, 2012 meeting of the PBSS was held last evening. The
meeting began at 7:05pm and had a robust attendance.

Matthew Ormsby, Walter Feaster, Bill Bentley, Tony Abernathy and Patrick
Ray were all in attendance as well as some new to me but old faces,
welcome back Ken Cameron and Steve Franks. Also in attendance were some
newbie's and semi newbie's: Aaron Corral, Erik Ulrestad and Luke and Kat
of already forgotten last names. As an aside I've made zero effort to
spell anyone's name correctly so if it's incorrectly please feel free to
let me know.

A financial report of 837.37 was given by Walter which changed during
the evening by at least 4 new members and a sticker being sold.

Bill gave a report of the grotto led trip to Amazing Maze for the PBOC.
A reported 21 people attended and apparently everyone had a good time.
It was said that at first it was like trying to "herd cats" but
eventually a few groups were formed, leaders assigned and at least 6
total hours were spent underground crawling around. Bill tested his new
gopro camera and after some difficulties says he recorded some pretty
good video. Perhaps he'll add it to our youtube page (if you want to let
me know and I'll get you the account and pw).

I mentioned that I hadn't heard anything back about volunteers to repair
the gate at Ess Cave and Bill hadn't either so to our knowledge the cave
is still unsecured. Some strides were made with the google maps and
though a point specifying the location of Ess Cave still appears the GPS
coordinates have been removed. The point gets you in the ballpark but it
would take a lot of searching to find the cave from that start location
so everyone seems somewhat happier now. If anyone on the mailer has the
ability to repair the gate please let me know and we will set up a trip
to provide whatever assistance is necessary.

I gave a report on a UT Grotto trip I went on with Alex to the Deep and
Punkin Nature Preserve in order to prepare for our PBSS trip this
upcoming November to the same place. I also read the letter from Don
about the upcoming TCR later this month and a letter from Ellie Watson
about the Chuck Steum Award.

Finally the meeting was opened up for election nominations and all of
the same people currently serving in their positions were re-nominated
to again serve in those same positions. No new nominations were
suggested so each "incumbent" will be running unopposed.

Patrick asked if it was too early to discuss the Christmas party and so
we talked about it for a few moments. I volunteered Patrick's place but
after learning he lived in a perhaps "less than safe neighborhood" I
retracted my willingness to have him host. It was said that everyone
enjoyed having it in someone's home like last year so if anyone would
like to host the Christmas party please send me an e-mail. It was also
suggested that we could check the availability of the Sibley Nature
Center.

The meeting was ended at 7:30 pm and following the meeting I showed some
of the new members the basic vertical gear required as well as offered
some other practical advise on where to get it.

Have a great month,

Matthew Ormsby
PBSS President

As an aside I've made zero effort to
spell anyone's name correctly so if it's incorrectly please feel free to
let me know.

[PBSS] September Meeting Notes

2012-09-12 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
The September Meeting of the PBSS began at 7:00pm with Bill Bentley,
Tony Abernathy and Matthew Ormsby in attendance. We were later joined by
Kerry Lowery, Patrick Ray and two of his friends Erik Ulrestad and Laura
Liem.

A financial Report was not given because Walter was not in attendance
but last months report was 800.79 and there have been no expenses since
then.

Bill gave a report about the upcoming Amazing Maze trip for the Permian
Basin Outdoor Club led by the PBSS. Emphasis was added regarding TCMA
membership requirements. The PBOC meets next Tuesday and the trip will
be on September 22. Any interested PBSS member are invited and
encouraged to attend, please make sure your TCMA membership is up to
date. If you need directions please e-mail me.

I gave a brief report about a trip to Ess Cave this past Saturday. Bill
recommended I mention in this remailer that the gate has been
compromised and needs to be repaired. Barry and Mike have been
recommended for the job. Currently, the cave can be accessed by anyone
who knows its location. Thanks to Google anyone that searches Ess Cave
can find it. Bill is going to send Google a request that the location be
removed from its map but doubts anything will come of it.

The TCMA reunion will be on October 20-21 at Paradise Canyon. I am
tentatively looking at getting permits to park caves on October 27th. I
also hope to get permits to the TCMA preserve in November after
Thanksgiving.

The meeting was officially closed at 7:25 because of a commitment I had
in Odessa at 8:00 but most everyone else stayed and ate and probably
talked about caves.

[SWR] August Meeting Notes

2012-08-17 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
Meeting Notes August 14th, 2012

The August Meeting of the PBSS open at 7:02pm, 10 minutes after a
opinionated and probably near sighted individual commented to Tony and I
about the size of the table we were occupying. He obviously missed the
sign that indicated the table was reserved for the club and probably
didn't know the meeting was not yet at hand. I guess sometimes people
speak and don't think, or speak after thinking... only their thoughts
are a little on the short side of intelligent. Anyway. The table did in
fact fill up with Walter, Bill, Tony, Patrick and Matthew all in
attendance.

Walter gave a financial report. Currently $800.79 resides in the clubs
account.

Bill addressed an upcoming PBOC trip to Amazing Maze. The trip will be
on September 22nd and Bill and Jacqui and anyone else I presume that
wants to will lead a group of people from the outdoor club to and
through parts of Amazing Maze.

Matthew gave a report on the recent trip to Wen Cave and Christmas Tree
Cave in CCNP. Bill gave some history on the caves and recent pictures
from the trip were shown on a laptop. Trips to Chimney and Helen's Cave
were discussed and will be planned in the not to distant future. Patrick
commented a recent job change should allow him to make more caving
trips.

Bill gave a report on the National Convention. He gave more of a report
on the storm than the actual convention but lamented that those earning
awards were not appropriately recognized because the distraction that
the storm presented.

A large portion of the meeting was spent discussing access to a large
cave in West Texas. Prior to the meeting much time had been spent trying
to figure out if the PBSS might establish a relationship with the West
Texas land owner. At meeting time we were hopeful to get into the cave.
Since meeting time we have learned that relationships with the landowner
are very dynamic and access will be tricky.

The meeting closed at 7:41.

[PBSS] April Meeting

2012-04-16 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
April 10th, 2012 Meeting of the PBSS

Attendees: Tony Abernathy, Walter Feaster, Matthew Ormsby, Alex Ormsby
and Patrick Ray

Financial Report: 781.79

Welcome back Walter. We continued the conversation about the need to add
Walter to the PBSS bank account so that he could do his treasurering
accurately. Given the banks hours Walter would only be able to meet
someone to be added to the account during his lunch hour, from 11:30 to
12:30. We discussed him possibly meeting Bill around 12:00 sometimes
before the end of April. Bill will be out of town the remainder of the
week so the soonest date this could be done would be April 16th. I said
I'd call Bill and let him know what we were shooting for to see if we
could make it happen this time.

Walter gave an account of his current illness. He spent two weeks in the
hospital in San Antonio but is back in Midland now. His condition is
thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. We broke down the words to try and
understand the condition but I was unfamiliar with the word purpura
(I've since learned it means purple).
Essentially, Walter is having unusual clotting in his small blood
vessels which leads to a deficiency of platelets (your clotting cells)
in the blood stream. As a result bleeding can occur under the skin,
which looks like bruising, which is purple. Mystery solved.
Unfortunately his kidney is not functioning normally. His quote was,
"Two weeks in the hospital, kidney quit, back on dialysis, it sucks."

We discussed the possibility of a return trip to Blue Quail on either
May 5th or 12th. Walter said he was probably free both weekends but
Patrick, Alex and myself all have prior commitments. Tony said his wife
will be having surgery soon so he also would probably not be able to
make the trip.

We also began to talk about the SWR but it doesn't look like anyone is
going of the attendees so we undiscussed it. I mentioned that we were
still waiting to hear back on a date for Abyss but we were shooting for
the 1st or 2nd week in June.

The meeting was closed with no undue objections at 7:23pm.

[PBSS] March PBSS meeting notes

2012-03-20 Thread Ormsby, Matthew A
Meeting notes March 13th 2012

The March meeting of the PBSS opened at 1903 with Matthew, Alex,
Tristan, Bill, Tony, Patrick, Andrew and Herman Miller in attendance.

We have money, probably. No report was given as Walter was in the
hospital and not able to make the meeting. On that note the need to
transfer treasurer responsibilities at the bank from Bill Bentley to
Walter Feaster was readressed. Bill again noted he thought the president
should also be included in the process and be able to write checks. In
Walters absence and due to his unavailability it was decided to transfer
the account from Bill Bentley's name to Matthew Ormsby's name during the
week following spring break. When Walter becomes available Matthew will
then add his name to the account.

A trip report on our recent visit to Deep Cave in CCNP was given.

Upcoming events to the Spring SWR, National Convention, TSA and TCMA
events were discussed.

Herman discussed the Board of Directors and things associated with the
upcoming elections as well as a possible spring break trip with RD. We
also discussed possible trips in the Big Bend region, Abyss, 400 foot
and the current LNF and CCNP caves open for rec. permits.

The meeting was closed at 1933

Re: [PBSS] Amazing Maze date

Jacqui,

I spoke with Don Arburn about organizing a trip to Punkin and Deep Cave
near Carta Valley between Del Rio and Rocksprings and this was his
reply.

Matt, just set a date, we'll work out the rest. Basically you will need
a designated trip leader to accompany your group, I have a list I can
call upon for volunteers. This person will know the cabin procedures and
the paths through the caves. Currently, due to bats, Punkin is closed
except for the main big room and it's two rope drops. Deep cave surveys
begin soon, therefore opening more cave for your pleasure.

There is a $5 per person property usage donation and a few hours of
service work. I have directions, liability releases and volunteer hour
worksheets. Currently there is a burn ban (no fires), and a requirement
that each individual brings 5 or more gallons of potable water to use
and then add to the cisterns there.

There are many good campsites and the field station has 9 bunks plus
couches. There is a shower, kitchen table and fully outfitted kitchen.
We even have a presentation screen should anyone bring a projector.

Today I'm heading out there to do recon on the upcoming Deep surveys.

There is cell service there.

My phone number is 361-362-3677, give me a shout with any questions.

Is there any interest from grotto members in making a trip to these
caves? I believe I will certainly organize something in the future so
Alex, Tyler, Tristan and I can go as well as anyone else that would be
interested.
