being the preserve manager.

If you are not going to have a hog rotating over a wood fire and fire-roasted
vegetables then why even have a dinner ?Or at least some food cooked over
wood, or at least charcoal.

I am just curious when was the last time that the hog's head was the
centerpiece of the table ?

I hope to arrive at TCR on Saturday at 5 pm. and hopefully find some leftover
scraps.

I can only pray that I will be single by then.

Re: [Texascavers] an idea for fund raising

2016-05-10 Thread ryan monjaras via Texascavers
I can't agree with you David. Firstly, most grottos dues already are $10 for
the year, not just 3 months. Do you propose we uncrease our yearly dues for the
rest of the members? Secondly, we are not the kind of people who alienate and
deny others of the joys of caving simply because they can't pay dues. And last
of all, I've only seen the hat passed around a handful of time and new members
have not been asked or expected to donate for someone or something they don't
know.

From: texascavers@texascavers.com

I have seen dozens of people very interested in caving come to one caving
meeting and either never come back or only go on one caving trip.
I would like to formally propose that caving organizations offer all new
visitors and the general public an Introductory 3 Month Membership for $ 5 for
students and $ 10 for others. And if they turn that down, then you can get
more aggressive about not including them in the group when they do not renew.
It scares people off when the first thing they hear from a group is put money
in the "collection plate."

[Texascavers] Off-trail exploration of Wonder Cave

2014-01-06 Thread ryan monjaras
So I went off trail at Wonder Cave today as I work there and can get permission
from the manager. I went to a small hole that I knew lead to a larger room from
a previous off-trail trip and had to turn back due to time constraints and I
got a little lost. This time I went farther than before and can easily say the
cave is more than double than what is on the map and had to head out early
because I did not feel comfortable in that much cave by myself and I got lost
again. Now don't laugh, but I need help to finish exploring this off-trail
section. I got permission from the general manager to take cavers down this
Wednesday to explore more, either e-mail me or text my cell which is below my
signature.

This Sunday, Nov. 17th, will be the work day for Lost Oasis Preserve in Austin.
I will need people to bring chainsaws, lopers, weedeaters and you should also
wear gardening gloves. I will be there at 10 AM to get started and we will go
for 3 or 4 hours, afterwards access to the cave will be allowed and drinks and
sandwiches provided. Our main objectives will be the eradication of invasive
species, establishing fire breaks and aesthetics of the preserve. The address
is 4116 Lost Oasis Hollow Austin, TX 78739.

RE: [Texascavers] Beck Ranch Cave Update

2012-09-27 Thread ryan monjaras

How about a cube shaped gate. It would go vertical two feet then the top part
would be bat friendly. Any debris would be trapped at the base and not block
the top entrance part. There could also be a bottomless box type guard thing
around the lock to prevent anyone from cutting the lock from the side.

The trails are heavily used by the residents. Flood damage means more money
spent fixing the trails.

Most of the debris I'm talking about is organic. It washes down the wet branch
of the cave to the aquifer. Nature runs her course.

However, if a grate were placed over the opening, the debris would tend to pile
up and block the opening. That's the problem.

Roger,
S, I'm watching the new show Legend Quest on the SyFy Channel (absolutely
awful show so far, by the way) and the host just crawled into a cave, knocking
down stalagtites as he went. Maybe you or some of your caving friends should
consider contacting SyFy about this? If nothing else to have them come down on

Dave,

I only know of four Austin area caves and
two are not suitable for a one year old. Just to say she has been in one, take
her to Avery Ranch Cave
or Dyes? Ranch Treasure Cave.
Both are in Cedar
 Park and only about 100
feet long with no hiking as they are both in the middle of residential
neighborhoods Avery is the better and easier of the two.

Oh I understand, but I HAD to jibe you a bit.
We've had enough volunteers that have experience in there, if someone wants to
show up and help out, and need some direction on what to do, we'll arrange to
get someone in there to help. I'm pretty sure the schedule is wide open to
whenever you can go in and spend some time to help.

It's a perfect Texas summer project, since the cave is cool enough comfortably
work in.

Lydia, I'll be onsite Saturday and Sunday as well, continuing the work I
started in the Imagination room, I think most of the work is done in Storm
Canyon and the Cathedral room.I think my next step was to put lights up in
the ceiling in the Imagination room, along the fault line. Feel free to take a
crack at that if you like, or where you feel comfortable.

I won't arrive until Saturday afternoon, I'll be driving in from Dallas. I've
also got 2 people showing up Sunday morning to help as well.

And as Lydia stated in another email, we have lots of work left to do. Lights,
resto, mud haulout (this will be a big job) and I think some surveying will be
done as well.

Mark, if you would show up to more than 1 grotto meeting a year, you'd know
about trips :)

I can think of many more ways. Caving here in Belize I can add:

53. Getting eaten by a jaguar
54. Being ripped apart by a gibnut (or tepescuintle) in a crawlway
55. Interupting looters while they are looting Maya artifacts

(I've been close to these.)

There are other ways too.

56. Being blugeoned to death by your fellow cavers with rappel racks. (I've
contemplated that a few times.)

[Texascavers] not cave related but i know theres plenty of veterans in here

2009-11-11 Thread Ryan Monjaras

this was sent to me through my squadron and im trying to get it to as many vets
as i can. oorah!

During Veteran’s Day week many businesses offer discounts to military
members, retirees, and other veterans. Below are a few that have made it to
my desk. Please forward me any other opportunities you hear about. Proof
of service is often required such as a military or retiree ID card, DD Form
214, or VA card, so be prepared if you are asked. Also I recommend you call
ahead, because some locations may not participate. FYI for you veterans, if
you would like to have a VA card, simply register at your local VA Medical
Center (with your DD-Form 214), and you can receive a photo ID card.

Stein Marts in the DFW area will be giving a 10% additional discount to
all service members on November 10th and 11th. Go to www.steinmart.com to
find a store near you.

Cabela's nationwide is offering employee pricing on November 11th and 12th
to all veterans, active duty, reservists, law enforcement, and fire/ems
services. You will need to present your ID to receive a "hometown heroes"
coupon at the door. Some restrictions apply to this discount.

Applebees is offering a free select entree at participating stores on
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 with active/reserve/retired ID card.
http://www.applebees.com/vetsday/

Golden Corral's Military Appreciation dinner is scheduled for Monday,
November 16, 2009, from 5 to 9 pm in all Golden Corral restaurants
nationwide. http://www.goldencorral.com/military/

McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurants across the country are offering
a complimentary entree from a special menu to the Veterans who have served
in war and peace. This offer is only for Sunday, November 8th. Go to
http://www.mccormickandschmicks.com/featured-promotion/Veterans-Appreciation
Day.aspx to find a location near you.

Pizza UNO's is offering a free entrée or pizza (with the purchase of an
equal value item) to all veterans and current servicemembers. This is only
on Veteran's Day, November 11th. You just need to be in uniform or present
a picture or ID of you in uniform.

The Home Depot is offering all active duty personnel, reservists, retired
military, veterans and their immediate family members a 10% discount off
their purchases in honor of Veteran’s Day. The offer is valid on purchases
of up to $2,000. Some exclusions apply. The promotion usually lasts for one
week prior to Veterans Day, so call ahead to verify the days.

 Starting Summer 2009, Lowe’s now offers a year-round 10 percent discount
for all active, reserve, honorably discharged, retired military personnel,
and their immediate family members. The offer is valid on purchases of up
to $5,000. Some exclusions apply.

RE: [Texascavers] a bat related video clip

i believe it makes fun of the lengthy parliamentary process where every little
thing has to be voted on, in that aspect i found it very funny, the bat was
just something random, it could have been a flying squirrel and the script

I think the makers of the video clip below have an audience of peoplewho enjoy
watching the "Dumb & Dumber" type movies.
( recommend that you not watch it, but read below )

http://www.theonion.com/content/video/breaking_news_bat_loose_in
Synopsis:
A parody of 3 councilmen arguing about something irrelevant, when

a bat flies into the session. I can't understand where they found
actors/directors/animators with enough spare time to film this clip ?
Why did LG pay for advertising on this clip? Does that make you

want to buy LG ?

I’ve read this thread with interest, consternation, and
amusement all bundled up together.
Back when this mailing list was “CaveTex,” I spent a year (and then
some) as its administrator and moderator. I inherited the job from my dad, who
just got plain tired of trying to keep up with Luddites and flamers and
headaches from the list’s various hosting services.

Here’s what I think, for what it’s worth. The “me-toos” and
one-liners are indeed a nice campfire, sociable kind of response. You guys
exist in a rare community. I’ve seen the old-timers take care of each other in
ways that just don’t happen in conventional communities and families, and I
feel blessed—albeit in a very non-religious, non-denominational way. You rely
on each other for amusement, and you work together and learn together. I work
closely with another Caver-offspring in a 40-hour/week bureaucratic environment.
We marvel regularly at what a great thing it was to be raised by our crazy
parents and their friends. In most cases, you know you can count on each other
to care about important things in the same ways—family, friends, the land, the
caves, the knowledge…your own lives.

Use the Delete key as you see fit and keep your impatience
to yourselves. If you really want to be business-minded, be cautious with your
subject-lines. Use important first words:
Trip Report, Work Weekend, Action Required, whatever. But don’t
disparage each other for brevity or lack of brilliance. Gil Edigar can write an
essay that would make any of us weep. Ted Samsel can make me laugh so hard I
fear I will pee myself from a single line. But every non-stellar rejoinder or
mundane reply meant something to the person on the other end who hit “send.”
Respect that and appreciate it.

I have my secretary print all
my emails to paper, so I'd prefer 1 page text minimum (Times New Roman, 10 pt
font).

Also, if you could remove the history chain at the bottom this would save a lot
of paper.

Thanks in advance for your compliance on this matter,

Simon

Hi!

I use Mozilla's Thunderbird both in the office and my laptop. I know, it's a
throwback, now that everything is online, but you can set it up to pretty much
do whatever you want: leave messages on server, delete messages from server,
delete only the ones that you delete, have messages delivered directly to
specific folders, group messages by thread, etc. It has a pretty decent junk
mail filter, and setting it up is easy.

Even in slow connections, usually I don't even notice when messages are
downloaded (unless it's the first time of the day and there are several big
files to download, and for really bad connections you can put a limit on the
size of files to download). I always have the preview panel on, and it
literally often takes less than one second to read a message (especially short
replies), delete them and move on to the next one.

OK, 162 words. Clear to go!

Maybe a better solution for you is a daily digest. Then you scan scoot right
