John and Terry,

Curiosity got me digging.

John, there was no cave in the Texas Speleological Survey database that matched
your information. There is now. I’ve plugged your information into the database
at a location that might be the site of an old homestead but really needs
someone to check the county property records to confirm where the Walter Babb
Ranch headquarters was precisely located (although during my digging I found a
1953 El Paso newspaper article where Babb was allegedly caught stealing
cattle).

Terry, Fielder Canyon Cave is in the TSS database, but not in Texas. Several
Texas caves and karst features without location information are assigned the
same set of default coordinates in southeast New Mexico. Once location
information is available, they are relocated back into Texas. Using the
information you sent, I moved the cave into Texas to coordinates that are
probably accurate to within about 1,500 m.

Hi All,
Hopefully someone can help me locate a small vertical cave north or northwest
of Langtry. I have known of this cave for decades, but because of its history
relative to the family, I have put off recording the cave (or even visiting it)
until now. Most of the family is now dead, and with me at the end of life the
location and history of the cave will be lost soon. I don’t think it is
mentioned in the Caves of Val Verde County, but it should end up in the county
files for both caves and archeology for future reference and history.
It is a small vertical pit with supposedly a small opening entrance and ample
interior space. I have no idea if it has vertical walls or bells out. It should
be fairly close to the old Walter Babb ranch headquarters, which I assume was
his small ranchhouse, shed, and normal old-style pens. Since I have never been
to the cave, I don’t know its exact location, but it was rumored to be a
vertical pit relatively near the house. The cave would be similar to the
vertical pits of Hitzfelder and Mason’s Indian Cave and nothing like Lead or
any of the other Langtry area caves.
If anyone has any ideas or general information, you can post them to this list.

I've also wondered about Susie since she's been absent. She was a mainstay
of Texas caving, every vertical work shop and other things she was involved
with. she was my mentor at CWAN for the photo workshop, back when we used

almost brought me down, I begged for the vaccination but they wouldn't give
it to me before hand.. Too many tie ins . I hope for a good report on her !

Re: [Texascavers] looking for tips - caving in Missouri

2017-07-25 Thread Jerry via Texascavers
--- Begin Message ---
While I personally agree with Dr. Tuttle's message regarding the effectiveness
of current WNS decon protocols on reducing the spread rate of Pd and WNS in the
US, I believe that it is somewhat irrelevant to the issue of whether we, as
cavers should comply to mandated decon regulations. Cavers tend to chafe at
being told to do things that they don't agree with, no matter how trivial or
easy it is to comply with. Nonetheless, the NSS, as an organization that
attempts to embody national recognition and respect amongst the different
federal and state regulatory agencies that manage public lands, should maintain
a hard line on caver and member compliance. -- Not start an online discussion
about the relevancy of the protocols in the guise of educating the membership.

It is disappointing that after the Ely debacle in 2016, and increased concern
on the part of the federal agencies to address the WNS issue, that the
leadership of the NSS continues to nibble at the edges of dissent, instead of
guiding the NSS through a time of trouble.

It is easier to blame the cavers than accept that we are not able to control a
natural process.

The decon mandate makes it look like we are doing something and gives some
folks the warm fuzzies.

Cleaning gear should be a normal process, kinda nice not dealing with the end
result of wet muddy gear that was stuffed in a plastic bag and left there for a
few weeks.

Folks,

While I think that cleaning gear is a great idea for a lot of reasons, it was
very interesting to listen to Dr. Tuttle’s Keynote presentation on WNS and bats
at the NSS Convention Friday Banquet. To paraphrase him, Deconning of equipment
will do no good in preventing the spread of WNS. There has been no documented
case of the transmittal of WNS by cavers and bats are doing a great job
already. WNS will spread across the continent, killing an untold number of
bats, and there is nothing that cavers can do about it.

Any thought out there in caver land.

Re: [Texascavers] looking for caving tips -Missouri

2017-07-25 Thread David via Texascavers
Over in southeast Missouri, between Eminence and Round Spring you will find
fun things to do. Check out "Devil's Well" as you can do that by
yourself. Even better, ask around to see if there is some caver that
knows how to actually rappel into it. I think there is a light-bulb at
the bottom that some caver is lucky enough to be in charge of. Round
Spring Cave has a lantern tour, I think.

Lots of good swimming and some cliff-diving around there. There is a
commercial cave around there somewhere, and several north of there.

On my trip there I had hoped to tour Cathedral Cave, but I missed the only
tour, or it wasn't running when I got there.

Worse case scenario, is some caves have expensive wild tours.

David Locklear

P.S.

I was officially was an active GHG member from 1989 to 1992 & 1994 to 1995
) I have worked in Houston for 27 years, but never really lived there,
unless you consider being a vagabond as living.I lived in College
Station in 1993 and was active in A.S.S. that year and had little contact
with GHG except for seeing a few of the active members at TCR, several of
whom are no longer with us or vanished or moved far away. All of that is
a very fuzzy memory now.

I bumped into Charles Fromen about 3 weeks ago. He and I visited Las
Grutas del Precipicio in 1991. And in 1989 we went to Minas Viejas cave
called Cuchillo.
His son and experienced caver, Carl Philip Fromen owns an impressive shop
repairing large industrial earth-movers in the town of Cypress, meaning
large backhoes, bull-dozers, cranes, etc.

I hope to go back to Missouri as a tourist again someday.

Still no word on my Sequoia yet. Man that s*cks.

Pete,

That is a good point, if you're not an NSS Member, joining gives you
credibility as a serious caver when you're contacting cavers in other regions.
In addition, the members manual and the NSS web page at www.caves.org are great
resources for finding cavers in other areas.

[Texascavers] Looking for LIDAR cave data and photos

2017-03-08 Thread gpassmore
Hi All. For the TSA Spring convention, I would like to prepare some virtual
reality experiences with a cave LIDAR dataset of a smallish room. Ideally,
there would be photographs of the area or photometric data with the point cloud
samples. If someone has data they are willing to share, I will get it up and
running on the Oculus and bring it to the TSA convention for everyone to enjoy.
The user will be able to walk around in the cave room. If there data is more
extensive, I can add in walkways for fun as well. Please write me at
g...@passmorelab.com you fit the bill. Credit, appreciation and lots public
praise will go to you for help on this.

2015-10-13 Thread Diana Tomchick via Texascavers
Rob,

The Constitution and By-Laws are on the TSA Business page:

http://www.cavetexas.org/TSA/tsaofficialbusiness.html

The date on the document is 2002. Has it been substantially changed since that
time? If so, then this version should be swapped for the newest one.

Also, the meeting minutes from 2001 can be found on that page.

Hi Thomas:

Frenc Facija, a caver in Slovenia, operates a speleocamp near Laze with both a
bunkhouse and campsites for visiting cavers. He is a very active caver with
many contacts through the caving community.

There are some images of Frenc and his facility on page 7 of

(It may take a moment to download the PDF file)

We are currently in Terlingua, but plan to return home to Denver in early May.
I think I have an extra copy of Ian Bishop's Cave Guide to Slovenia which I
purchased from him in 2006. Ian has passed on and the publication is out of
print. Let me know if you would be interested in obtaining that extra copy.

2014-04-16 Thread George Veni
Here is a simple rule-of-thumb if you're planning to go caving outside of the
US and are looking for contacts. Go to http://uis.caves.org/. The UIS
(International Union of Speleology) is made of about 60 member countries,
including Croatia. Contacts for those countries as well as their national and
regional organizations are listed.

I'm planning a trip to the shining Adriatic Sea for June, and was hoping to

Not only is the Baltimore Grotto the most active of the 4 grottos
mentioned, but also since most the caving for the entire region is Done in
WV / Western VA the DC, Baltimore, and PSC (Northern VA) Grottos (all very
active) maintain a shared caving calendar and communicate events to each
other.

For the more informal events make sure to get into the grottos mailing

 Thanks,

Have you checked the NSS Members mManual or the caves.org web page?

There are 4 grottos listed:

Baltimore Grotto in Fulton
Frederick Grotto in Westminister
Sligo Grotto in Millers
Western Maryland Grotto in Meyersdale

If you are in the Baltimore area contact me off list and I will give you a
personal contact to get hold of.

Have fun up there

Hi Lissa,

I am a former Terxas caver now living in Virginia. I have
many friends in the Baltimore Grotto. It is probably the most active
of the ones R D mentioned. I can put you in touch with several
people. They do many active exploration trips, including major
vertical caves in WV. Let me know your interests and abilities and
I'll introduce you.

Re: [Texascavers] Looking for a grotto in Maryland

2012-09-18 Thread Brian Freyling
Not only is the Baltimore Grotto the most active of the 4 grottos
mentioned, but also since most the caving for the entire region is Done in
WV / Western VA the DC, Baltimore, and PSC (Northern VA) Grottos (all very
active) maintain a shared caving calendar and communicate events to each
other.

http://www.cavingclub.org/info/calendar/cal.pdf user/pass: calend/gocave

For the more informal events make sure to get into the grottos mailing
list. Note: VAR is happening this weekend, this is kind of like TCR with
lots of caving and partying. I would highly recommend going.

Re: [Texascavers] Looking for a new caving vehicle?

2012-08-20 Thread Justin Haynes
Oh, meant to say 1980 is desirable because it was the only year with the
SD33T or turbocharged diesel engine. Also all diesel scouts were 4 wheel
drive with the means to shift between 2 wheel and 4 wheel. They all had
hefty Dana transfer cases. So if you see a 1980 diesel scout, you don't
have to ask many questions about options other than automatic or manual
transmission, and you may want to ask some questions about gear ratio.

At any rate, there is an active community, so you wouldn't be abandoned
with an uncommon car that no one has. Also it was a car made in the US
(and the Nissan engine was a popular one in other applications), so finding
parts isn't too hard:

(I used to have 1978 gas powered scout in the 90s which I loved. I'd
probably shop for one of these diesels myself if I didn't already have a
1984 Mercedes-benz 300d)

So in other words, they are disappearing. And if you can find one, you can

Howdy Cavers,

A.S.S. would like to invite any interested cavers to come and give a cave
related speech/ presentation at one of our meetings. Our meetings are held
Thursdays at 7:30pm on the AM campus.

Please keep in mind that due to ASS being a university club, our turnover
rates are quite high and the majority of our grotto is new to caving and
come from a wide array of backgrounds. The more general a topic the better,
but you are welcome to present on what ever you would like. Possible topics
include: intro to cave surveying, cave geology/biology/etc, cave formations,
and so on.

I understand that College Station is out of the way for many of you, and
therefore ASS is willing to reimburse you for gas expenses (within reason).

If you have any interest, please contact me at zachrbrouss...@gmail.com for
further details.

Thanks,

As a reminder to all, the Karst Information Portal (www.karstportal.org) is
among other things a virtual karst library with about 5,000 publications and
more added regularly. It has digital copies of all NSS News issues from
volume 1, number 1, up to a couple of years ago. Simply select the Browse
Resources tab, then scroll down through the long list of publications to
the NSS News. From there, scroll to the issue you want. You can also do a
keyword search help you find what you need.

The back issues of the Texas Caver will be added to the Portal per an
agreement with the TSA, as well as to the TSA website. High resolution
scanning and OCR processing is in progress.

The Karst Information Portal is a project of the National Cave and Karst
Research Institute, University of South Florida, International Union of

Hi George!

Thanks for the reminder. I found there the article David wants, and loved that
Bill Russell was on the expedition team that made it down to river, and the
final line of the article:

The 0-9 Water Well Cave seems to be a cave designed by Old Mother Nature
specifically for the purpose of separting the men from the boys in the ranks of

Some great reading (and research) to be done on the Karst Portal!

2011-03-26 Thread germanyj

Hi George!

Thanks for the reminder. I found there the article David wants, and loved that
Bill Russell was on the expedition team that made it down to river, and the
final line of the article:

The 0-9 Water Well Cave seems to be a cave designed by Old Mother Nature
specifically for the purpose of separting the men from the boys in the ranks of
Texas spelunkers.

Some great reading (and research) to be done on the Karst Portal!

As a reminder to all, the Karst Information Portal (www.karstportal.org) is
mong other things a virtual karst library with about 5,000 publications and
ore added regularly. It has digital copies of all NSS News issues from
olume 1, number 1, up to a couple of years ago. Simply select the Browse
esources tab, then scroll down through the long list of publications to
he NSS News. From there, scroll to the issue you want. You can also do a
eyword search help you find what you need.
The back issues of the Texas Caver will be added to the Portal per an
greement with the TSA, as well as to the TSA website. High resolution
canning and OCR processing is in progress.
The Karst Information Portal is a project of the National Cave and Karst
esearch Institute, University of South Florida, International Union of
peleology, and the University of New Mexico.

That predates my collection by 8 or 9 years. Aren't they digitized in the
NSS Library?

We can check the TSS library next time we are up that way unless you want to
schedule a special trip.
