[Texascavers] A new LED headlamp
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I saw a new headlamp at Walmart that caught my eye. I am in very deep doodoo at the moment, but I went ahead and bought the headlamp today. First impression is this is the first department-store headlamp that I have ever seen under $ 25 that is suitable for real Texas caving. 6 light settings, strap fits over helmet, and has 3 piece strap, dust resistant, plastic seems good plastic. No green or blue or strobe or flash settings. The rotating hinge seems cheezy, so I would set it at the best angle and epoxy it. I would bet you could cave with it for 5 hours, but after that you would have to put on a different headlamp. So this headlamp is better as a back-up, if you plan to cave for more than 5 hours. I would not venture into Honeycreek Cave with it. Maybe you could gerry-rig it to be water-resistant, but not water-proof. Hopefully, it will end up at the 2020 NSS Consignment Sale. >From David Locklear Please hit the delete button now - pretty please I am about to discuss the best LED headlamp that can be purchased for under $ 38 retail. The ATAK 560 Sold at Northern Tool Company for just $ 34.99 plus tax ( $ 37.88 ) I own this headlamp. The most unique feature are 2 large Li-ion batteries in the compartment at the backside of your head. ( These included batteries appear to be the standard size you can purchase at Fry's, or outdoor stores like Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas, etc. ). The next unique feature is 3 light settings all of which are bright and perfect in pattern. This lamp can only be recharged with a USB adapter sold separately.I guess you could remove the batteries and and put them in a charger. You would certainly want to carry fully-charged pair or two pair of these batteries in your caving pack. The light switch is very good. The construction is rugged on the headpiece, but super-cheezy on the battery compartment. This would almost be the perfect newbie caving headlamp ( for large dry caves only - Guads, northern Mexico, west Texas ). But with the cheap price comes some drawbacks. The stretchy- head-straps are way too short to put on a helmet.You will have to cut them off and rig some new straps of your own.But worse than that - the electric cord is way too short. You will have to cut it and install a male-female connection.This is common on caving headlamps, so that really is no big deal to an experienced caver. The battery compartment will require some way to keep it sealed and to keep the batteries from falling out. Maybe some rubber-bands or velcro or duct-tape, etc. The lens cap comes with those silly tactical-edges.That is the last thing you want on a caving headlamp. You are likely to cut yourself and get an infection or cut the rope and fall to your death, or cut your caving buddy, ( or with my luck all five at the same time ). You must file these sharp edges off. You should be able to get 13 hours of caving in walking size passage with this headlamp on one set of batteries.So figuring in a 1-1/2 safety factor or something like that, say 8 hours of caving, but carry spare batteries. The lens does focus to a spot beam, but I did not test if that makes it any brighter. But that is where water would seep in if you dunk the light.I would prefer to find a setting you like and then seal the tiny gap around where the lens extends inward and outward This product can be found on-line even more inexpensive https://www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-560-Rechargeable-Headlamp/dp/B071YSF7J1 This lamp is not suitable for Honeycreek, or Airman's cave, or Whirlpool Cave, etc.It is too bulky and bright, and not water-resistant enough. Until someone actually does several caving trips on this headlight, you have to assume it could totally fail, and you need to carry a back-up headlamp.The weak point is probably where the electric line connects to the battery-pack. A creative caver could buy these cheap on-line, and re-engineer them and sale them at caver parties, grotto meetings, etc. This one should end up as a door-prize someday. Maybe at the next big shin-dig. Carol, Thank you very much for that tip. I was going to take the headlamp back for a refund. I don't know how I overlooked that slider focus adjustment. I will test the light pattern again tonight, but a brief test in daylight, the light pattern still appeared to be annoying except in the flood position. It looks like it is best to put some sealant ( under the sliding mechanism ) and just push it all the way in permanently. Some duct-tape might make it water-resistant. The light pattern is not really adjustable. It is ideal for small walking size passage only. But it is readily available at AutoZone for $ 30 plus tax. With 4 AA batteries, it may be the best headlamp under $ 33. [Texascavers] Another new LED headlamp
Coast lights has a new headlamp called the HL46 sold at Lowe's for $30 plus tax. It looks like the perfect newbie headlamp for those that want to start with something nice. I do not like the switches on their low end products, meaning this one. But it is compact enough for the average west Texas cave. It has good light settings, and water -resistant enough to take in humid passages. This lamp would be overkill for Travis County caves, and Enchanted Rock Cave. Disclaimer: I did not take it out of the package, but once owned the previous version. It includes 4 hardhat clips. My bet is one would most likely use the low setting while caving, and the high setting while hiking along the dark trail from the cave. [Texascavers] Another new LED headlamp
Academy Stores has a headlamp called the INOVA STS, by Nite-ize. I can not review it right now, but the specs look interesting. It cost $ 35 plus tax. It is black in color, but the lens ring comes in a choice of either, blue grey or orange. I would presume that this headlamp should be acceptable as a primary source of light in any Texas cave, and as a back-up to keep in the cavepack for expedition trips to the big caves, because INOVA has a reputation for durability. It is quiet out there on the web. I can't find anything news worthy. I hope you are all sitting around camp near a cave somewhere. Here is a lamp that was upgraded and renamed about 2 months ago. http://www.berniescafe.co.uk/catalog/images/supernova.jpg It is waterproof ( using a magnetic switch ), and puts out 400 lumens on high, and also has a low setting. The lens appears to have a collator so hopefully the light pattern does not have a bright spot in the center. I am guessing it cost around $ 300 U.S., not counting shipping. This is the same lamp they had before, but rumor has it that they replaced the P4 LED module with a brighter P7. I can't find much info on it or reviews. Steve Webb of the DFW grotto has the hp10, its really bright, but needs a diffuser on it for smaller areas. I think he took it on the last sump trip into Honey Creek and reported it worked well in there. I try to stay away from Ebay, but as soon as retailers have it back in stock, I plan to pick one up. Fenix makes really good lights, I already have several from them. [Texascavers] A New LED Headlamp-The Mammut Lucido TX1
I do not think David has reviewed this headlamp. In August I purchased a Mammut Lucido TX1 LED Headlamp for $80.00. The lamp is helmet mounted with 3 AA in back of the helmet. What makes this headlamp so good is the incredible spotlight with the great runtime of days and that is on the brightest setting. The bright light is a hi-flux one watt LED with a max range of 345 ft. The lamp also has Two Hi-definition floodlight LEDs with hi and low settings. The run times of these smaller LEDs have a max of 180 hours. I noticed tonight that some vendors now sell the Lucido for as little as $64. Another model offered is the plain Mammut TX1, not the Lucido which I have. The TX1 is powered by 3 C-cells carried in a belt pack or in a pocket where the batteries can be kept warmer. That model using 3 C-cells has a run time of 450 hours, can you believe that. The lamps are not waterproof, but they are made for an alpine use in rough and tough, cold and damp conditions.
