[Texascavers] Volunteers needed at Deep & Punkin March 6-7-8

2020-02-20 Thread Robert B
Texas Cavers and Friends of Deep & Punkin Caves
The following is a shameless request for your help on the weekend of March
6-7-8, 2020
Should your schedule, capabilities and desire to help match our needs ---
let Tom Rogers or I know.
We recognize how valuable your time is and do not make this request lightly.
Please understand, only those folks that contact us need show up.
We prefer - Safe, Strong, Smart & Quiet volunteers
This is not a caving or party weekend.
As or Feb-19... We have seven (7) volunteers.
We could use a few more, especially another 'Bobcat' operator.

OK, here it goes The Work...
On March 6-7-8, Tom Rogers and I are heading up the efforts to completely
replace the south-side deck at the Deep & Punkin Cabin.
The work crew will completely disassemble the existing plywood deck and
framing structure and remove all rock from underneath and around deck area
with the use of a rented Bobcat Skid-Steer with loader bucket.
The Bobcat arrives Friday evening, leaves Sunday afternoon.
We are preparing the site for the new deck being built the following
weekend.
We could use your help with the deck demolition (Friday 6th) but mostly we
need manual labor (7th-8th Saturday & Sunday)
This involves helping load the Bobcat with rocks. Operating the Bobcat.
Moving materials.
While the Bobcat can do much of the work, it can't do it all.
Through manual labor, we have to maximize each 'carried load' in order to
get the most efficiency out of the Bobcat. The Bobcat is basically a
motorized wheelbarrow.
I roughly estimate 70-100 loads will be loaded and dumped. This makes for a
long day, maybe two. The Bobcat must leave the property Sunday afternoon.
If manual labor is not your preference, we could use some help with cooking
- cleaning - cabin shutdown so the work crew can maximize their efforts.
Meals provided.
Tom and I are available should you have questions
Thanks for your consideration.

[Texascavers] Volunteers Needed for TCMA's Robber Baron Open House

2017-09-26 Thread Joe & Evelynn Mitchell via Texascavers
Saturday, November 11 is the date of the next Robber Baron Cave Open House and
TCMA need many volunteers to help make it a success! This is a major
fundraising event for TCMA, especially fundraising from outside the caving
community, and is a chance to raise public awareness about TCMA and caves. We
typically have more than 400 people go through the cave during the day, so need
lots of volunteers both on the surface to run tables and coordinate cave entry
and also in the cave to direct people and answer questions. The event runs from
9 am - 3 pm and after its over, you are welcome stay and explore other parts of
the cave. There will also be an after-party hosted by the Bissets.

If you can come and help out, please contact Evelynn at evel...@satx.rr.com or
via Facebook. She is coordinating volunteers and if you would like to do a
specific job, let her know what you are interested in doing:

Surface Greeter/Support
In-Cave
Tour Guide for guided tours/Advance sign in table
Sinkhole gear table/cave sign in and out
Surface sign-in table
T-shirt sales table
Photo booth/runner

If you are only available for part of the day, that’s fine, just let Evelynn
know.

If you are coming from out of town and need a place to stay, let us know and
accommodations can be arranged.

Hope to see you there!

Thanks,
Joe Mitchell

[Texascavers] Volunteers needed for the 2017 NSS Convention, New Mexico :

2017-01-20 Thread Jerry via Texascavers
Hi folks,

It's 5 months until the 2017 NSS Convention in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and time
to get serious about the upcoming events. The Convention staff have been
working diligently to make this a great Convention, but they need your help. As
always, a conventions' success depends on the volunteers that make the gears
and wheels of the convention actually turn. Volunteers are needed for a variety
of jobs, both pre-, during-, and post-Convention, including Decon station
volunteers for both full-day and 2-hourshifts, cave trip leaders, and for
Registration andSecurity, among other duties. To date, approximately 200 people
have pre-registered for the Convention.

I've been told that the best way to get folks to volunteer for something is to
directly contact them. People like to be told that their personal contributions
are important, and that their commitment to the greater good is much
appreciated. I agree with this view and wish that it was a totally viable
method to recruit folks for this years' Convention. But the Convention staffers
are not clairvoyant nor do they know everyone out in the caving community that
may be able to help out. If you've never volunteered at an NSS Convention, or
have in the past and found it to be both fun and educational, I hope that you
will consider doing so again or will try it out for the first time. It's a
great way to find out how your society actually works (or doesn't) and a way
for you to become involved in the greater caving community.

I encourage any and everyone that may be able to volunteer to contact Meg
Sorensen (Convention volunteer coordinator) at volunteer2...@caves.org Meg can
fill you in on what's needed and when, and help you figure out a schedule that
fits your timeline.

Registration for Convention can be done online at:
http://nss2017.caves.org/index.php That link provides other Convention-related
information as well.

I hope to see you in Rio Rancho this summer !

For the last several years, cavers from around the state have participated with

I just wanted to let you know that we have been invited to again assist the
Girl Scouts from the Austin and San Antonio area at Colorado Bend SP for their
annual Girl Scout Extravaganza.

They are needing our help to lead groups of girls on caving trips on Saturday,
January 12th.

They are usually split into three (or four groups) and we typically visit
Dynamite Cave, Turtle Shell Cave, and Cicurrina (sp?) Cave and, possibly,
Gorman Falls.

A short cave talk at the Park office is usually given beforehand and the girls
will be providing their own equipment.

Female leaders are especially effective with the Scouts, as they seem to like
and appreciate members of the fairer sex who aren’t afraid to have fun and get
dirty!

I was planning on helping, as were the kids, as we have the last 6 or 7 ( 8?)
years, but I found out my parents will be swinging through the DFW area to see
us and, primarily, their two new great granddaughters that same weekend.

If any of you could head up this endeavor, I would be very much indebted to you
and the Conference Center available for GS caving volunteers’ use.

Please let me know if you can assist and I appreciate your past help and, I
hope, participation in January.

Thanks very much in advance!

Earth Mars Cave Detection Project, 2011 Mojave Desert Expedition (09-15
April 2011)
We are seeking volunteers to assist with thermal and visible imagery
collects and ground-based data and instrument recovery as part of the
Earth-Mars Cave Detection Project. This work is supported by NASA's
Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology Program. Work in the Mojave will
mark the culmination of a three-year effort to characterize thermal
behavior of terrestrial caves to identify optimal detection times using
thermal infrared imagery and ground-based measurements. We have been
studying five caves and four shallow cave like features in the Mojave
Desert, CA. Currently, we are using temperature and barometric pressure
data loggers to collect hourly data; these instruments are deployed on
the surface and throughout the length of each of our study features, and
have been collecting data for the past three years.

Ground-crew: We will be collecting thermal imagery from a NASA-Dryden
B-200 aircraft from 11 through 13 April. We'll be collecting thermal
and visible imagery on the afternoon of 11 April, pre-dawn thermal
imagery will be collected on 12 April. 13 April is currently a
contingency operations day in the event that weather or aircraft issues
prevent us from flying on one of the scheduled days. We are looking for
a ground crew of between 5 to 10 people who can be spread out across the
lava flow and serve as ground markers while we are collecting the
imagery. During the day, they will need to wear bright colored
clothing. At night, they will ignite emergency road flares.

Data and Instrument Retrieval: Once overflights are complete, we will be
removing all instruments from our study caves from 13 through 15 April.
We need at least two people to assist with this effort. Volunteers must
be physically fit and must be either experienced cavers, rock climbers
or mountaineers to participate in this work; there are no exceptions for
these requirements.

Ground crew will be needed from 10 - 13 April; Data and Instrument
Recovery personnel will be needed from 13-15 April.

Schedule:
09 April Travel to Barstow, CA/ Camping Area near Mojave National
Preserve
10 April Establish surface grid for geo-referencing tie points
11-12 April Overflights/ Ground Crew deployed
13 April Contingency Operations for Overflights
13-15 April Pull data and instruments from all caves
15 April Travel (Afternoon)

Accommodations: All volunteers will be responsible for their own
accommodations. Volunteers may wish to camp at the site and there is a
large unpaved parking lot where we have camped in the past. Conditions
in the Mojave will be quite comfortable this time year. Also, there are
hotel accommodations in both Ludlow and Barstow, CA.

Food and Water:
All volunteers will be required to have their own food and water during
this project.

Equipment:
Ground Crew for overflights: Helmets and headlamps will be required when
working on the lava flow at night. All volunteers must have their own
helmets, headlamps, back-up lights and extra batteries while working on
the flow.

Data and Instrument Retrieval: If assisting with the data and instrument
retrieval portion of this mission, a complete packing list will be
provided-at a bare minimum, all personnel working in caves will need a
helmet, at least 3 sources of light, extra batteries, gloves, elbow and
knee pads, personal first aid kit, emergency blanket, water, and food.

Explorers Club Flag Expedition:
This project is an EC Flag Expedition. I will be carrying Flag # 139.

have been collecting data for the past three years.

[Texascavers] Volunteers needed

2009-06-08 Thread Jim Kennedy
Cavers,

I have need for some help for ICS.

First of all, I need a volunteer (or volunteers) to be on the WNS Decon
Committee, specifically to pick up the supplies from my house in Austin
and take them to Kerrville by Saturday 18 July. This person or persons
will be responsible for ensuring that some of the supplies get to Travis
Scott, who is organizing the cave trips during the week, in order to
place them on the vans and busses that are going to those caves. The
volunteer(s) will also be responsible for getting other supplies to Jon
Cradit, in order to place them at the campus Washateria and other
laundry facilities in the dorms and apartments. The supplies will
consist of some big plastic tubs, empty 5-gallon buckets, cases of
bleach and Lysol(r) disinfectant, boxes of trash bags, and other sundry
items (scrub brushes, Purell(r), etc.), so a pickup truck or SUV would
be needed. I will be leading a week-long pre-convention field trip that
will end in Kerrville on that Saturday, so I cannot get the supplies to
Kerrville on my own. Please let me know by the end of this week if you
are available and can do this.

The second job is for trip leader(s) for some Colorado Bend State Park
trips on Sunday (19 July), Monday (20th), Wednesday (22nd), Thursday
(23rd), Saturday (25th) and Sunday (26th). There will be one van
heading out there each of those days with up to 12 people. Trip leaders
will be responsible for driving the van to the Park, conducting
participants to Gorman Falls and several select caves in the Park, and
driving back to Kerrville, dropping off participants at the WNS Decon
Station and sweeping out the van. These will generally be all-day
trips, with a sack lunch. It would be great to have 2 leaders each day.
The same leaders can lead trips on as many of those days as you like.
You do not have to be familiar with the caves, since we will supply cave
maps, coordinates, and other beta, but it helps. Drivers must be over
25, but assistant trip leaders need not be. There will be coolers of
beverages on each van. Please let me know ASAP if interested, and cc
Travis Scott (tra...@oztotl.com) as well.

Thank you all for your interest and support!

[Texascavers] Volunteers Worth 3.3 Times Minimum Wage

2008-05-30 Thread germanyj

April 17, 2008

Volunteers Worth 3.3 Times Minimum Wage

The
value of a volunteer hour nearly kept pace with inflation during 2007,
increasing 3.94 percent while consumer prices tracked at 4.1 percent.
The estimate for the value of volunteer hour jumped by 74 cents, from
$18.77 in 2006 to $19.51 last year, according to Independent Sector
(IS), a Washington, D.C.-based coalition of nonprofits and foundations.

IS
calculates the hourly value of volunteer time based on the average
hourly wage for all non-management,

 non-agriculture workers as
determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with a 12-percent
increase to estimate for fringe benefits. The federal minimum wage is
$5.85 an hour.

Our
nation's volunteers play a vital role in helping America's 1.4 million
charitable organizations improve lives across the country and around
the world, said Diana Aviv, president and CEO of IS. Quantifying the
value of their time gives us yet another indicator of how important
volunteers are to communities.

The
new estimates were released ahead of National Volunteer Week (April
27-May 3) to acknowledge the millions of individuals who dedicate
their time, talents, and energy to making a difference.

Washington,
D.C. had the highest hourly value ($30.10) among the 50 states and
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The top states were all found in
the Northeast: New York ($26.18), Connecticut ($25.75), Massachusetts
($24.29) and New Jersey ($23.62).

The
bottom six states, excluding Puerto Rico ($10.21), all fell below the
level of the Virgin Islands ($14.85): West Virginia ($14.70), Arkansas
($14.63), North Dakota ($14.27), Mississippi ($14.08), South Dakota
($13.72) and Montana ($13.51).

In
all, 10 states eclipsed the $20 value and all but seven had values of
more than $15. Two pairs of states had identical values: Colorado and
Virginia ($20.08), and Vermont and Kentucky ($16.07).

[Texascavers] Volunteers for Girl Scout Trip to Colorado Bend SP, Saturday, January 19th

2007-12-24 Thread rafal kedzierski

Ann Evensen, a girl scout troop leader, has asked me about helping her take 2
groups of 15 girl scouts through Gorman and Circurina Cave at Colorado Bend SP
on Saturday, January 19th. So far I have found no one who could be there that
weekend and help her out, so I just want to send out an email to see if anyone
familliar with these caves volunteers. Cory Evans, the park sup, has offered
help with accomodations as well. Any takers?

[Texascavers] Volunteers needed at TSS office this Sunday

2007-09-24 Thread Jim Kennedy
Cavers,

The TSS office is having a major fall cleaning and work session this
Sunday, 30 September, at 10:00 am. That's right, Sunday. We have
scheduled it on a weekend to hopefully accommodate more cavers from
outside of Austin. If your grotto would like to make a weekend field
trip and help out, we can probably hook you up with a caving trip on
Saturday and find you crash space at night. Heck, people are welcome to
camp in my back yard or living room floor if they want.

We have multiple tasks that we wish to accomplish this Sunday. We want
to move some furniture and wirebrush and paint a badly flaking brick
wall (previously painted). We also want to repair a hardwood floor that
badly buckled from the humidity this summer, and have to move some
furniture and rip up some boards to do that. And finally we need to
give the entire office a good cleaning, carrying out old equipment to
the curb, sweeping floors, knocking down cobwebs, dusting shelves and
cabinets, cleaning the desks and tables, and ridding the rooms of
vermin. There will also be the opportunity to meet some TSS Directors,
go through the TSS files, and copy maps and descriptions if you want,
but those things will have to be worked around the big jobs, since the
main room will be a little torn up and a beehive of activity.

If you think you can make it, contact Jim Kennedy by Thursday at the
very latest so we can get your name on the PRC security list and so we
have a rough idea of how much help we have. The TSS will buy lunch for
everyone who shows up for the day. We plan to work until the afternoon
sometime, depending on how fast this all goes.

We'll have all the paint, cleaning supplies, and tools on hand, so all
you need are clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and a willingness to
help. We hope to see you then.

Jim Kennedy, TSS Office Manager
