[tw] Re: For any guitarists out there: like to test a guitar tab plugin for TiddlyWiki?

2009-07-24 Thread Alex Hough

Hi Paul

This looks really cool.
I've got a guitar teacher friend who might be interested as well as a
young nephew. I'm impressed that typing 'Esus4' gave me the right
chord.

I thiink it could be really useful for blogging music teachers. Some
tabs and a youtube vid would be a really good way to learn.

I really like the Rapheal stuff.

A recommendation? a TW version with all the scripts included.

[tw] Re: For any guitarists out there: like to test a guitar tab plugin for TiddlyWiki?

2009-07-24 Thread Paul Gallagher
Hi Alex,

Thanks for taking a look, that's great. The underlying jTab library is only
a recent development, so looking for all the input I can. I .. er, ahem ..
code better than I play, so the more eyes on it from
well-schooled/professional players the better.

Doing a standalone TW version is probably a little way off, since there's
frequent improvement/extension of jtab at the moment. It's a great idea for
when it's stabilized a bit more though - eliminate the dependencies.

Regards,
Paul

No more messing around with ascii or having to install PowerTab...
Just open a browser enter some strings and there you have it your tab

[tw] Re: For any guitarists out there: like to test a guitar tab plugin for TiddlyWiki?

2009-07-24 Thread Måns

Hi Paul

Thanks for sharing - It's great to get yet another plugin that makes
TiddlyWiki worthy of beeing notepad nr. 1.
I've been using Tuxguitar/Musescore and Lilypond - sometimes
OooLilypond (WriterPlugin OpenOffice.org) to write my music and
guitarstudies for pupils.
(Before I discovered Open source - I was using Sibelius extensively -
also for guitartabs, - but I like to be able to share software with my
pupils and colleagues - therefore I've made a switch to Open Source)

What I really miss is the ability to write plain notes directly in a
TW - but your plugin shows that there is a way to communicate and
store both cadences and tabs for simple melodies - and that's a HUGE
step in the right direction.

I wrote this in an *old* thread about Lilypond:
http://groups.google.dk/group/TiddlyWiki/browse_thread/thread/51b1fc508f281a62/5e54e1759d5593c9?hl=da&q=lilypond#5e54e1759d5593c9

I will investigate your plugin as soon as I'm back from my vacation
ans see if I can use it for customized chord diagrams?! -
I like to make my own vocabulary of mixed chordsystems based on
individual pieces of music...
Is this a little too ambitious at the moment?

Thanks again - It looks good so far - Great job.

2009-07-25 Thread Paul Gallagher
"Just open a browser enter some strings and there you have it your tab.." -
that's exactly the motivation Heller, glad I found some like-minded ppl.
Actually, the truth is that jTab was a spur-of-the moment project to test
out raphael. The idea of sticking it in TW came as an idle thought afterward
- but I guess I should pretend that was the idea all along. It is so *right*
;-)

Måns - interesting to see you imagining the same idea in your old thread on
Lilypond;-)
Do let me know about any ways it can be improved to meet your transcription
needs. jtab still young, but I'd like to make sure it is a good, robust and
general purpose solution for all guitar transcription.

Paul

Hi Paul - and/or maybe Eric?

Two questions:
!)
I can't print chordcharts with SnapshotPlugin
http://www.tiddlytools.com/#SnapshotPlugin.
Do you know what I have to do - to make it work?
2)
My TW uses a dark/tranparent background for the textbody.
I'd like to have a white background - just for the tabs.
How do I accomplish this?

You can have a look at it here: http://måns.dk/#[[GuitarTabs%20i%20TiddlyWiki]]

2009-07-29 Thread Måns

Hi Wolfgang

Great! - You are a real TWWizard ;-)

I mixed up a TW/Web-vocabulary with a musicexpression for
guitarnotation - "tab" - meaning: notation of which note to play on a
stringed/fretted instrument, by writing numbers (fretnumbers) on lines
= strings.

What I'm searching for is a way to change the background to white of
tiddlers with a certain tag (I would probably use: "jTab").
I think I read something about using different colours for tiddlers in
an earlier thread - maybe it was just a script - don't remember. I
have to look for it.

If you have a simple css-workaround for it - I would be glad to know.

Hmm... about my tw on måns.dk - I don't know whats wrong (hope it's
not my changes to MarkupPostHead that makes trouble...)- try xn--mns-
ula.dk/[[GuitarTabs i TiddlyWiki]]

Hm - I've tried to open my TW (måns.dk) from different browsers -
different pc's during the last month without problems - now I can't
open it in older firefox browsers or seamonkey...
I t *must* have some relation to jTab plugin - or the changes I made
to MarkupPosthead - I have made no other systemchanges for almost a
month

However I can open it online from FireFox 3.5 and IE 7...

2009-07-29 Thread Paul Gallagher
Hi Måns,

I haven't tried printing jtab with the SnapshotPlugin yet - thanks for the
alert, I'll check it out.

Regarding coloring of notation, you are right - currently it is fixed doing
black on transparent background. I'm thinking about adding more control over
colors (and sizing). In the meantime, a quick hack could be to style with
CSS. jtab renders into a DIV with class "jtab" - so you could set
background-color on this as desired.

Paul

[tw] Re: For any guitarists out there: like to test a guitar tab plugin for TiddlyWiki?

2009-08-30 Thread Paul Gallagher
Måns, Rob and others who were kind enough to chime in with ideas: there's a
1.1 release of jtab now available that incorporates many of the ideas like
color handling, tab notation shortcuts and the ability to render chords at
any position on the fretboard. See
http://tardate.blogspot.com/2009/08/jtab-11-guitar-tab-for-web-gets-update.htmlfor
details.

I've also setup a mailing list for jtab at
http://groups.google.com/group/jtab to avoid overloading tw and other lists
with OT messages in future. All are welcome..

[tw] Re: For any guitarists out there: like to test a guitar tab plugin for TiddlyWiki?

2009-08-30 Thread Måns

Hi Paul

Great job.
It's getting better and better - and looks very promising.

I have 1 caveat though - the printing issue. I'd really like to be
able to control printing of tabs - with Erics SnapshotPlugin.

Inspiration:
Do you know www.bopland.org? It has implemented Lilypond as an
notation- and midirenderer - and delivers notation + midi online.
The syntax is very simple - and you can playback notation rendered as
midi. Click a button and you can se the sourcecode.

OooLilypond makes it possible to write notation directly into Draw,
Writer and Impress - via a little plugin and templates.

It needs LilyPond to be installed on the hostpc...

I've tried to make Samuel (OooLilyPond) and BopLand.org talk to each
other about the syntax, because BopLand.org's special syntax is much
easier to learn and I would like to be able to use it in OooLilyPond -
for quick notation - and as a paedagogical notationtool for students.
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=3358533&forum_id=614285

At the moment your jTabplugin for TiddlyWiki - is easier to setup for
students to play with, - than the two alternatives mentioned. Once
again - Good job!

2009-08-30 Thread Paul Gallagher
Thanks Måns ... some really good ideas and points to follow up on; I'll look
into these further. The more we can reduce the barrier to entry on good
quality notation, the better!
