This is for a good cause so I am taking the time to forward it.

Please read it and if it touches your heart, I can reassure you that Rick
was a real person stricken with Transverse Myelitis. He was a fighter
right up until the end.

I know that times are tough, but if you can send even one dollar, it will
be greatly appreciated by Rick's family.

My love and Prayers to you all,

I am wondering about new shoes too. What type of sandals did you wear? I
can't find anything but sports shoes that I can wear with my AFO.

This topic has come up before, but of course I can't remember what I learned
at the time.

Has anybody found a pair of shoes that are really comfortable? You know,
good ones that can actually touch our nerve burning feet without pulling our
hair out. I wore my sandals all last winter in the snow. I just can't stand
to have shoes touch the tops of my feet.

If you've found good ones, what brand and where do you find them?

A big thank you to all

*I wear garden shoes year round, rain, snow, sleet or hail. Mine are called
Sloggers and are relatively inexpensive, and come in a lot of different
colors. I've stocked up on them to make sure I've always got a pair. They
are like walking on Memory Foam, and don't aggravate that damnable burning.
They have a strap around the back that is actually permanently attached, so
they're easy to keep on. Before my friend discovered them for me, I had a
real problem with stepping out of my shoes, as I have no grip in my toes.
I'm strictly a blue jeans person, and they actually look nice with them. A
lot of my nurse buddies have picked up a pair or two to wear to work, and
really like them.*

Terry and I had the pleasure of meeting Rick at the first TM Symposium we
went to approx. 8+ years ago. Since then, we have had several visits with
he and his partner, Bob, (we live fairly close to one another).

The last time we had visited their home, they had recently put in the
redwood paths in their yard to make the slope wheelchair accessible, (which is
most incredible, by the way). Terry had not seen the majority of the yard
until that time. He finally got get up to the koi pond and stream that
runs down the slope. Rick was so proud of his home and overwhelmed that he
could finally have the run of it once again.

Rick was an extraordinary man and will be greatly missed. He had a
beautiful smile, a great sense of humor and a huge heart, just to name a few of

his wonderful qualities.

[TMIC] RATS WALK AGAIN!

2009-09-23 Thread Akua

http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=gsJRK4OMIkLQJcJs=ivLYI9NTKiIRJ7NSKtEm=mjIQK6NQLjL5HReeve
Foundation supported scientists at UCLA and the University of Zurich
have been able to make rats with completely transected spinal cords
recover to the point that they can step and fully support their own
weight. This is a first!

Rats in the study had completely severed spinal cords. They underwent
a three-part intervention. Scientists gave the rats a combination of
the drug quipazine, and then epidural electrical stimulation. This
treatment activates the spinal cord's neural circuitry and makes it
functional again. Then the rats were given locomotor training.

The combination proved extremely effective. Within a relatively short
period of time, the rats were walking again. The voluntary stepping
of the rats on a treadmill was almost indistinguishable from their
stepping prior to their spinal cord injury.

Thanks Frank. I know Timberland is a great brand name and I know how soft

head.won't he be pleasantly surprised when I arrive in real shoes!

Thanks Patti - these sound great too. I can't feel cold on my feet, but I can
sure feel the wonderful burning when I put anything on them. Also can't stand
to have any kind of sock or slipper on my feet. We'll get this figured out.
Lots of great ideas here.

I seldom wear my AFO due to the burning when my feet are in lace- up shoes.
I look for shoes that I can slip off quickly including loafers and clogs that
have wide toes. The last two styles that worked for me are: New Balance 811
and Cobbies Cuddlers. Both styles have the short heel that helps keep my foot
from sliding around. The insides are smooth without irritating seams and both
have elastic side inserts that stretch to limit the amout of pressure on the
foot when taking a step. I need shoes because my feet freeze, but if I wear
them my feet burn. I hope you can find something soon.

Ok, I went on line and looked at the sloggers. These I could wear! And hey,
you can even put them in the dishwasher. I cracked up when I read that part.

Thanks Grace - I also like the fact that they don't have much height, which
just adds to the wobbles for me.
