Re: [TMIC] Extent of your TM? Pins and Needles

2012-01-04 Thread Priscilla Keene
I loved this, Dalton.  Luckily I had already retired from teaching so I didn't
have to work after I got TM.  I have too many issues to work anyway.  A fellow
teacher who worked with me had spina bifida and was in a wheelchair.  She asked
our new principal for a teacher's aid and he refused.  She quit her job and
stays at home, drawing disability when she could have been productive.  I
suppose my biggest regret is not being able to be productive in some way.  My
hands are paralyzed, and that makes it difficult to do much. Church, the
internet and tv are my life; I need to find something more to do to feel like I
have a purpose.
Suggestions anyone?

Have a wonderful day!

Reminds me of my last semester at college;
Since my arms were almost as weak as my legs and torso, I got the idea of using
my office chair, which was on casters, to glide around the halls to and from
classes and other appointments.  But the Dean didn't like it.  He was (and
likely still is) an anglophile.  That's someone who worships the old upper
class British orthodoxy.  I think he fancied himself some kind of colonial
boss.  Anyway, he saw me gliding on my office chair getting into the elevator
and stopped me.

Dalton, you can't go around like this.
Why not?  It works and allows me to attend to all my duties.
It's not acceptable.  Get a wheelchair, then.
My arms are just as weak as my legs.  I couldn't use a wheelchair.
Then get one of those electric scooters.
I teach on two campuses a half-mile apart.  Who's going to load and unload the
beast from my car?
I don't care.  I can't have one of my professors rolling around the halls in
an office chair.  It's just not acceptable.  What would people think?

Not proper, ay?  What do they know?  They should have some regard for the end
that awaits all of us.  I didn't last another semester. They got rid of me.
But in truth, I could no longer do the work.

That's when I understood the difference between a team and a family.  A team
eliminates weakened members while a family supports them, nurses them back, or
takes care of them until they pass on.  The workplace is like a team, I guess.
But our country should be like a family toward its citizens.

There I go again.

Jim, I could walk all along...but by holding my legs or joints stiff and
swinging from the hip and I didn't get far.  After steroids I was very weak,
and couldn't tolerate any weight or get far for about 4 months.  then I had a
complete recovery over about a year except for occassional fatigue and
spasming.  In 2000, I lost it for 11 months and recovered over another year.  I
had progressive weakness starting about 2008 until August 2010 when I couldn't
do anything let alone sit for more than an hour.  I'm now getting around with
orthotics and a brace for walking.  But, I have a lot of muscle weakness and
easily get pain aside from pins and needles, and burning with any exertion.
Also, my hands and arms are now involved.  But, I still get around pretty good
if I can pace myself.  Pam

From the discussion of Pins and Needles it seems that most of you are able to
get around and have some use of your legs.  I have pins and needles from my
feet to my belly and no use of my legs at all.  And they weigh a ton.  Been
like this since day  one.  Did any of you lose the use of your legs and then
get them back?  If so, how long did it take and how did you do it?

Hey guys,
I need some advice. Most of you would remember my wife leaving me in April of
this year. Since then I've found acceptance of my lonliness and it really was
not too bad.
Anyway, some 2 months ago I met up an old friend from way back and well, let's
just say sometimes life just has a way of hooking 2 people up. My problem is
I'm going away with her this weekend to a resort on the island of Tobago for
her birthday. I'm kind of wondering if I'm ready to spend a weekend with
someone alone. Haven't thought about that since my separation/divorce. What if
I start having real feelings for her? What if she wants more out of this
relationship after this weekend, even though we spoke about it at lenght. I
was really honest with her from the get go, suppose honesty becomes my
downfall?
Should I be scared guys? or should I just go and have funforget
TM/fibromyalgia/vasculitis for a weekend and enjoy the company of a woman who
I might like?
Regards,
Jeron

now that my dictation software is working properly on a laptop with Internet
action, I can finally let you guys know what's going on.

Sometime in January, I noticed that transfers and rolling around in bed getting
difficult. I didn't pay any attention to it since it is normal for things to
get difficult, that easier, is difficult to get. It seems to mean the end and
flow of people with these kinds of diseases. When I went to see my neurologist
for a follow-up appointment I was able to tell that I have been doing much
better but for this particular day I felt kind of bad. I chalked it up to just
having an off day.

Two days later, I found no longer able to mobilize in bed or transferred to my
chair using transfer board method. Needless to say, when home care came, I was
too difficult to assist so an ambulance was called and was transported to the
hospital on February 12. I've been here since under assessment and it was
decided last week (and also became my own conclusion) that I be placed in
long-term care.

The girls will be going to stay with her dad, which I now think works well,
since my time with them will be a better quality. His apartment is wheelchair
accessible so visiting should not be an issue. My ex also intends on bringing
them to me at regular intervals.

So sorry to read this, Dalton.

That sounds like the pain I had when  TM took hold --pervasive,
internal lightning bolts, that shut me up.riveting. Leaving me
aswoon. That was while i was still walking. It abated, to return
mainly at night, waking me leaving twitching on the floor, truly
wracked with pain.  I've read other people have banding and areas.
Until mine subsided I couldn't pinpoint an area. Naltrexone has
blunted the sharp edge for me  and made the agony twisters subside --
but my TM resulted in paralysis.

Some of you may recall that I was the drummer with a group called the
Edsels in the late 50's. We recorded a song called Rama Lama Ding Dong.
Anyway, I was talkin with Harry Green (2nd Tenor), and Marshall Sewel (Bass)
the other night, and we discussed George (Wydell) Jones who passed away two
years ago. George was the lead singer with us. Marshall asked what was wrong
with me using a cane, so I told him. He asked if that was anything like Polio
and I told him the difference, and started complaining. He said, Ya know, Doc
Had Polio. Doc who I asked. He said Doc Pomus who's real name was Jerome
Felder. I never met him but Marshall had so he related this story. Doc
contracted Polio as a child way back and in his early years, and was confined
to a wheel chair. It seems he and his wife were at an awards ceremony where Doc
was watching his wife dance with other guys that they of course knew, so Doc
penned a song for her as he watched called Save
the last dance for me. If anyone here is old enough, the Drifters recorded
that back in the early 60's. Check out the Drifters on You Tube, click on save
the last dance for me, and listen to the words. Just goes to show what you can
do if you set your mind to it. He wrote a ton of other hits also, but this one
especially hit home with me. Something I never knew before. I guess we never
stop learning.

I have similar feelings too in my feet.    A couple of weeks ago I spilt some

It is the right foot that swells, the right arm and hip are larger, and the
right side of my face is larger than the left side.  It's so strange.  I would
have trouble pulling up the hose since my hands and arms are so weak and I
can't
move my fingers.  My caregiver could do it though.  Thanks, Cody, for the reply.

Priscilla...It seems like everyone with TM has a dominate side of their body in
terms of pain and other issues related to TM. Mine is my left and it sounds
like
yours is the right side. I had to start wearing the hose after I had a huge
blood clot in my left leg. I also sleep with my feet elevated. When I wake up
in
the mornings the skin is lose around my toes. Then I put on my support hose and
get dressed. When I take them off at bedtime my ankles will start swelling.
That
is why I sleep with them elevated.
The hose are very tight and difficult to put on (much harder than pantyhose,  I
think :). I get the feet on first and then pull them up around my thighs. At
first it's difficult but it gets much easier after a little practice. Hope that

Thanks for the suggestion about the support hose.  My right foot and my
stomach
swell.
What helps bloating of the stomach?  I have cut my Lyrica down to 2x

I am not sure how this will work?  TM does the damage at the cord level, so how
is transferring nerves from one leg to another going to help?  Any of you got
an
idea as to this, especially medically trained persons I was a paramedic
training to be an RN, and I cannot see how this is a fix for TM.  The only way
a
nerve transplant would work was if the girl had Gulliame Barre' and the myelin
from that nerve was destroyed; then replacing it might work.  But for TM, I
don't see or understand it.  The article said very little as to how the doctors
came to this conclusion.

Re: [TMIC] forgot to say that I'm home

2010-05-30 Thread Priscilla Keene

Hey Barbara,

I'm relieved to know you finally made it home.  You were gone a really long
time!  I know it wasn't fun spending time in the hospital.  I leave next Tues.
to go to KC (plane-5 hrs.) to my daughter's and on to Branson (car-4 hrs.)
Thurs. and Fri. nights.  Did you stop in Branson to see some shows?

I know I'll be tired, but I plan to rest a lot and take it slow.  I'm in good
health with limited walking so I'll take my wheel chair with me just in case.
My worst problem is that my hands are paralyzed so I'm taking a friend with me
to help me in the airports and getting on and off the planes.  I have a hard
time climbing steps and at some airports where they don't have a jetway, they
have to roll in a portable lift to get me up to the door.  That's awkward
because I feel like everyone is watching me.

Anyone live near KC?  It would be great meeting someone else with TM.  I
haven't been on a vacation for 2 years, and I'm really excited.

Enjoy the holiday weekend and never forget those who served our country for our
freedom!

I'm sorry that I forgot to tell you all that I arrived safely home late on
Friday, May 21st.  We managed to put 7608 miles on our van and
enjoyed practically the entire trip.  It really was a great trip, and was
almost without incident.

With regard to health problems:  I fared really well, other than a bout of
pneumonia and a night in the hospital in Colorado.  This sounds bad, but I have
gotten pneumonia at home many times. It was worse getting it on the road, as it
has taken me so much longer to recuperate than usual, so that's the worse
part.  It also made the last week and a half of our trip a bummer, without much
fun.  No gambling in Vegas since I couldn't handle the smoky casinos, but that
probably saved me some money.  We managed to see 2 shows though.  I had about
7 days out of 46 of laying in bed, resting my back overall.  Not too bad, but
they were spread out.

We managed to see family and friends that we hadn't seen in several years, did
things that we didn't know existed, and went to states that we had planned on
visiting, but didn't really know when we'd do it.  All this because our
god-daughter planned her wedding.  So, right after this, I'm going to call her
and thank her for planning her wedding and for us having the opportunity to
push my inner thoughts into planning this wonderful trip.  She really didn't
have any awareness of this when she planned it, but my mind started to wander,
I only wondered if I could handle it.

I wholehearted recommend to anyone who really wants to do any kind of a
journey, whether it's a days drive or whatever, to give yourself the chance.
We stopped often, whenever I felt that I needed to, sometimes every hour,
sometimes in 2 hours, but I did it.  We've done short trips in the past, and I
did much better this time as it allowed for more relaxation since we had more
time.

Hugs, Barbara A in Auburn CA

Hi Janice,
No, they were normal before TM.  My arms and hands are another story:  my right
arm is twisted inward slightly, my right hand is stiff, cannot lift my right
hand-it droops like foot drop, I use a utensil holder on my right hand, I type
with my right thumb.
My left arm is twisted outward slightly. My left fingers are curled slightly, I
can lift my left hand.  I can push down my pants with my left hand, but have to
pull up with the right.  I can't feel hot or cold water on my arms or hands. I
can't drive.  I can't raise my arms over my head.
Does anyone else have these strange characteristics?  My neurologist had never
seen this phenomenom before and wanted me to come to the university where he
teaches to show his students.  I opted not to do so.
Have a wonderful day everyone!

Hello All,
I was wondering if any of you had one or both feet that wants to turn
out.    My right foot leans to the right instead
of walking straight.    When I straighten it, it feels like I am walking
pigeon-toed.    Do any of you have something
like that?

I, too, have banding, but it has lessened over the 8 years I've had TM. It wasextremely painful for the first few years, but now I only have pain below my right breast at night. My hands are paralyzed, and I can't unhook my bra so sometimes I have to sleepwith it on,andthat really hurts--I try to go to sleep asap! Lyrica helps me a lot with the banding.

Hi Jude,

It's so good to see you posting. It's been too long and we've missed you. I'm getting pretty sick of this banding too. And I've had the same thing with the breathing. What's up with that?? The first time it happened I was actually a little scared. If I would mind my P's
and Q's and nottry to do too much in one day,ALL of myaches and pains would be more manageable.well, maybe

Hi Jeanne,

The banding has been exactly the same for me. It has been with me since day one and starts underneath my breasts and goes all the way around my abdomen. When it gets real bad, it continues downward until I feel completely enveloped by it. Sometimes it hurts so badly it hurts to even breathe.

I don't let TM or anything get me down, but I am beginning to feel angry, after seven years. I am pissed because I cannot work in the garden and go places without it being a big deal to get dressed, fix my hair and sometimes put on make up so the pain doesn't show so badly. I was told that I looked old when I am in pain...by a sweet 14 year old boy. "Thank you very much".

For the constipation problem, for years I have used Fish Oil capsules, one per day and I get them from the health food store or my pharmacy. They work like a dream. And I have the kind of bowel that moves the poop down to "the vault", but will not push it out, so I have done digital removable for ever and ever. It's not fun, but we need to do what we need to do...

Love and Prayers,
Jude

Those of you who got that banding feeling do you all just have TM or did you also get subsequently diagnosed with MS too? And if you did experience the banding feeling, did you experience it at the beginning of your TM (or MS) journey or somewhere down the road? :-)Just wondering if TM'ers get the banding feeling or is it only those that get MS too. I had it at the start of my TM but it went away after a month or two. I had a very mild case of TM and as of yet not diagnosed with MS. Thanks!-- Laura

We all have received the same short message about Pam.  I spoke with her daily
as she had recently got a free long distance telephone set up.  It was fun
talking as long as we wanted to.  Anyway, she had been complaining about pain
in her left shoulder that continued down her arm.  Nothing she did for it
helped.  She had fallen in the house and landed on her shoulder and that''s
what I understand what prompted her to go to the hospital.  Her doctor wanted
her to go but Pam didn't want to.  Obviously, she ended up taking her Dr's
advice.

Once she left for the hospital, I never heard from her again and I thought
everything was hunky-dory until I received the short email from Dan regarding
Pam passing away.  I don't have the heart to call Dan and ask him for the
details.

I guess Linda spoke with Dan who told her that Pam had blood thinner than water
or something like that.  It was Linda's thought, and Mine as well, that Pam
must have had a blood clot that went right to either her heart or to her brain.

At any rate, she passed quickly and without pain.  That is the most that any of
us can hope for.  Pam will be sadly missed by many of us and may we do good
works in Pam's name and memory for the rest of our lives.

I have travelled by plane alone and with my boyfriend (now ex). Last time I
went alone was from Montreal QC, Canada to Seattle, WA. Took 2 planes there and
2 back. (Mtl to Toronto to Seattle there, Seattle to Vancouver BC to Mtl back).
The long rides were 6 hrs, the short was 1.5 hrs (Mtl-TO) and 30 min (SeaTac to
Van).

I travel with my wheelchair and bring my cane and wear my long leg brace. When
I travel alone I usually get bumped to FIRST Class for FREE! I ask for seats
close to the bathroom (and often they figure since I am alone I will need more
help as I am in a chair, and they have more time to help when in 1st class).

The first time I travelled alone I was nervous about going through security,
the only time they ever gave me problems was going from Mtl to TO to Seattle.
The Mtl security (US side) was ok really, but one lady there wanted me to take
off my brace... um, I need to take off my shoes/pants.. I just looked at them
and said, it's a brace that surrounds my leg, no hollow parts, I can't hide
anything there. I was pissed, not b/c that they wanted to check it, that's
fine, but it was her attitude that really got to me. She was rude and talked
like I was mentally challenged. Um , hello, I may be in a wheelchair, but I
am perfectly capable of making conversation! Grrr...

Don't let the difficulties of travelling stop you! It sounds harder than it is,
and I was plenty worried, but it turned out just fine and I had a great flight!
(the attendents were so very nice and helpful and it doesn't hurt that I look
under 18 sometimes!).

Heather I have found that sometimes you just have to do what you have to do!!
I flew alone to be with my mom when she was in her late 80's and I was so glad
that I did. Everyone was so kind and helpful. I too use a walker and sometimes
a cane!  Long trips are awful but my son is getting married in Lima, Peru in
November and I am definitely going to be there! I have hand controls on my car
because I do not have any real control over my legs. All rental cars have
handicapped equipped cars. And they are not allowed to charge extra for the
device. There are different types but it's so easy, you catch on very quickly.
Tho it sounds like you have lots of people to ferry you around. Have a
wonderful time!! I love it when our family gets together! Cherish those
moments!

thousands of race fans this weekend.  I guess i'll be homebound until Mon.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Subject: [TMIC] a presurgery update on Jude

I talked with Jude Wednesday evening by telephone, because I had a sore throat
and runny nose and couldn't visit her in person. She had been on the phone
all afternoon with other TMers (as Jude would say -you know who you are) and
said she realized that her last message sounded like she was afraid of her
surgery. Jude told me she wasn't afraid anymore. She wasn't/isn't
looking forward to the recovery. She knows there are a lot of us praying for
her and feels those prayers.
Jude responded to a prayer that I sent her. At 7:00 AM this morning said she
wrote that she was waiting for the ambulance to pick her up at home and
transport her to the hospital for today's surgery. She was to be at the
hospital at ten and the surgery is scheduled for one something. Jude sounded
relaxed in her post so I still believe that she is at peace regarding her
situation.
One of us will write (Ella, Pam, Linda, myself) as soon as we know anything
more.
Blessings to all
Patti - Michigan

Dear Phranque,
It sounds as if you had a terrible blow to that hand and arm.  I hope you heal
quickly and you don't have a lot of pain.  (Ya'll know that Phranque knows best
how to handle pain!)
Take care!

Frank, this is Janice. How are you doing now that it has been a couple of
days since you had the hand worked on. If you don't reply, I will assume
you are too sore or too bandaged to write back.Or, you could do the old
hunt and peck with the other hand.Anyway, wished you the best!

 Frank,
I hope you heal well and that the worst is behind you. Spring is comming
soon so sitting in the sunshine will be an option in your healing process. Are
you typing one-handed now? Keep in touch even if you only type I'm
here.
 One-armed hugs,

Evidently I was somehow inadvertently unsubscribedagain. I know sometimes
the list is quiet, but it hit me it had been several days since anything had
come through from TMIC. I can't get in the archives to see what I've missed --
I keep getting a Problem loading page message. I'll try it again later. If
anyone has sent me an update for the birthday list since Friday, please send it
again.

Thanks!
