Re: [TMIC] Extent of your TM? Pins and Needles
I loved this, Dalton. Luckily I had already retired from teaching so I didn't have to work after I got TM. I have too many issues to work anyway. A fellow teacher who worked with me had spina bifida and was in a wheelchair. She asked our new principal for a teacher's aid and he refused. She quit her job and stays at home, drawing disability when she could have been productive. I suppose my biggest regret is not being able to be productive in some way. My hands are paralyzed, and that makes it difficult to do much. Church, the internet and tv are my life; I need to find something more to do to feel like I have a purpose. Suggestions anyone? Have a wonderful day! Pins and Needles Reminds me of my last semester at college; Since my arms were almost as weak as my legs and torso, I got the idea of using my office chair, which was on casters, to glide around the halls to and from classes and other appointments. But the Dean didn't like it. He was (and likely still is) an anglophile. That's someone who worships the old upper class British orthodoxy. I think he fancied himself some kind of colonial boss. Anyway, he saw me gliding on my office chair getting into the elevator and stopped me. Dalton, you can't go around like this. Why not? It works and allows me to attend to all my duties. It's not acceptable. Get a wheelchair, then. My arms are just as weak as my legs. I couldn't use a wheelchair. Then get one of those electric scooters. I teach on two campuses a half-mile apart. Who's going to load and unload the beast from my car? I don't care. I can't have one of my professors rolling around the halls in an office chair. It's just not acceptable. What would people think? Not proper, ay? What do they know? They should have some regard for the end that awaits all of us. I didn't last another semester. They got rid of me. But in truth, I could no longer do the work. That's when I understood the difference between a team and a family. A team eliminates weakened members while a family supports them, nurses them back, or takes care of them until they pass on. The workplace is like a team, I guess. But our country should be like a family toward its citizens. There I go again. In 2000, I lost it for 11 months and recovered over another year. I had progressive weakness starting about 2008 until August 2010 when I couldn't do anything let alone sit for more than an hour. I'm now getting around with orthotics and a brace for walking. But, I have a lot of muscle weakness and easily get pain aside from pins and needles, and burning with any exertion. I didn't pay any attention to it since it is normal for things to get difficult, that easier, is difficult to get. It seems to mean the end and flow of people with these kinds of diseases. When I went to see my neurologist for a follow-up appointment I was able to tell that I have been doing much better but for this particular day I felt kind of bad. I chalked it up to just having an off day. Two days later, I found no longer able to mobilize in bed or transferred to my chair using transfer board method. Needless to say, when home care came, I was too difficult to assist so an ambulance was called and was transported to the hospital on February 12. I've been here since under assessment and it was decided last week (and also became my own conclusion) that I be placed in long-term care. The girls will be going to stay with her dad, which I now think works well, since my time with them will be a better quality. Anyway, I was talkin with Harry Green (2nd Tenor), and Marshall Sewel (Bass) the other night, and we discussed George (Wydell) Jones who passed away two years ago. George was the lead singer with us. Marshall asked what was wrong with me using a cane, so I told him. He asked if that was anything like Polio and I told him the difference, and started complaining. He said, Ya know, Doc Had Polio. Doc who I asked. He said Doc Pomus who's real name was Jerome Felder. I never met him but Marshall had so he related this story. Doc contracted Polio as a child way back and in his early years, and was confined to a wheel chair. It seems he and his wife were at an awards ceremony where Doc was watching his wife dance with other guys that they of course knew, so Doc penned a song for her as he watched called Save the last dance for me. If anyone here is old enough, the Drifters recorded that back in the early 60's. Check out the Drifters on You Tube, click on save the last dance for me, and listen to the words. Just goes to show what you can do if you set your mind to it. He wrote a ton of other hits also, but this one especially hit home with me. Something I never knew before. I guess we never stop learning.

Re: [TMIC] forgot to say that I'm home
Hey Barbara, I'm relieved to know you finally made it home. You were gone a really long time! I know it wasn't fun spending time in the hospital. I leave next Tues. to go to KC (plane-5 hrs.) to my daughter's and on to Branson (car-4 hrs.) Thurs. and Fri. nights. Did you stop in Branson to see some shows? I know I'll be tired, but I plan to rest a lot and take it slow. I'm in good health with limited walking so I'll take my wheel chair with me just in case. My worst problem is that my hands are paralyzed so I'm taking a friend with me to help me in the airports and getting on and off the planes. I have a hard time climbing steps and at some airports where they don't have a jetway, they have to roll in a portable lift to get me up to the door. That's awkward because I feel like everyone is watching me. Anyone live near KC? It would be great meeting someone else with TM. I haven't been on a vacation for 2 years, and I'm really excited. Enjoy the holiday weekend and never forget those who served our country for our freedom! Peachy in sunny TN From: Barbara Alma balmat...@aol.com To: tmic-list@eskimo.com Sent: Fri, May 28, 2010 7:35:01 PM Subject: [TMIC] forgot to say that I'm home I'm sorry that I forgot to tell you all that I arrived safely home late on Friday, May 21st. We managed to put 7608 miles on our van and enjoyed practically the entire trip. It really was a great trip, and was almost without incident. With regard to health problems: I fared really well, other than a bout of pneumonia and a night in the hospital in Colorado. This sounds bad, but I have gotten pneumonia at home many times. It was worse getting it on the road, as it has taken me so much longer to recuperate than usual, so that's the worse part. It also made the last week and a half of our trip a bummer, without much fun. No gambling in Vegas since I couldn't handle the smoky casinos, but that probably saved me some money. We managed to see 2 shows though. I had about 7 days out of 46 of laying in bed, resting my back overall. Not too bad, but they were spread out. We managed to see family and friends that we hadn't seen in several years, did things that we didn't know existed, and went to states that we had planned on visiting, but didn't really know when we'd do it. All this because our god-daughter planned her wedding. So, right after this, I'm going to call her and thank her for planning her wedding and for us having the opportunity to push my inner thoughts into planning this wonderful trip. She really didn't have any awareness of this when she planned it, but my mind started to wander, I only wondered if I could handle it. I wholehearted recommend to anyone who really wants to do any kind of a journey, whether it's a days drive or whatever, to give yourself the chance. We stopped often, whenever I felt that I needed to, sometimes every hour, sometimes in 2 hours, but I did it. We've done short trips in the past, and I did much better this time as it allowed for more relaxation since we had more time. Hugs, Barbara A in Auburn CA

It's funny you would post that today as it seems like my vision has been very blurry and I was wondering what I could do as my meds are working so great now and I don't want to change. Anyway, she had been complaining about pain in her left shoulder that continued down her arm. Nothing she did for it helped. She had fallen in the house and landed on her shoulder and that''s what I understand what prompted her to go to the hospital. Her doctor wanted her to go but Pam didn't want to. Obviously, she ended up taking her Dr's advice. Once she left for the hospital, I never heard from her again and I thought everything was hunky-dory until I received the short email from Dan regarding Pam passing away. I don't have the heart to call Dan and ask him for the details. I guess Linda spoke with Dan who told her that Pam had blood thinner than water or something like that. It was Linda's thought, and Mine as well, that Pam must have had a blood clot that went right to either her heart or to her brain. At any rate, she passed quickly and without pain. That is the most that any of us can hope for. Pam will be sadly missed by many of us and may we do good works in Pam's name and memory for the rest of our lives. Last time I went alone was from Montreal QC, Canada to Seattle, WA. Took 2 planes there and 2 back. (Mtl to Toronto to Seattle there, Seattle to Vancouver BC to Mtl back). The long rides were 6 hrs, the short was 1.5 hrs (Mtl-TO) and 30 min (SeaTac to Van). I travel with my wheelchair and bring my cane and wear my long leg brace. When I travel alone I usually get bumped to FIRST Class for FREE! I ask for seats close to the bathroom (and often they figure since I am alone I will need more help as I am in a chair, and they have more time to help when in 1st class). The first time I travelled alone I was nervous about going through security, the only time they ever gave me problems was going from Mtl to TO to Seattle. The Mtl security (US side) was ok really, but one lady there wanted me to take off my brace... um, I need to take off my shoes/pants.. I just looked at them and said, it's a brace that surrounds my leg, no hollow parts, I can't hide anything there. I was pissed, not b/c that they wanted to check it, that's fine, but it was her attitude that really got to me. She was rude and talked like I was mentally challenged. Um , hello, I may be in a wheelchair, but I am perfectly capable of making conversation! Grrr... Don't let the difficulties of travelling stop you! Dear Jude, I hope that you are on the mend now since your surgery. Is it painful to sit up? I am still sensitive since my pressure sore 8 years ago. I feel so terrible about your not having any one to stay with while Dave has his surgery. If I didn't have 2 different caregivers, I could be in the same situation. Patti had some good ideas to share. Another idea, probably not a good one, but could you stay in a nursing home temporarily? I know several people who had to do this. I wish you well. Happy Easter! Jude told me she wasn't afraid anymore. She wasn't/isn't looking forward to the recovery. She knows there are a lot of us praying for her and feels those prayers. Jude responded to a prayer that I sent her. At 7:00 AM this morning said she wrote that she was waiting for the ambulance to pick her up at home and transport her to the hospital for today's surgery. She was to be at the hospital at ten and the surgery is scheduled for one something. Jude sounded relaxed in her post so I still believe that she is at peace regarding her situation.
