Dee wrote in asking about Kaiser insurance. I've had it for over 30 years
and am very familiar with the way it works in many different departments.
Unfortunately, the doctor's requisition for any Durable Medical Equipment goes
to that department and they often make a home visit to assess the need.

That's the way it works. I was denied a wheelchair, then appealed to her
heart and got it, a manual chair is all I was looking for though. I don't
think it would be any different for a scooter.

RE: [TMIC] Scooter

2007-10-26 Thread Larry Throne

My question is why is a social worker making any of those decisions?
First off after recognizing the need it is up to your doctor alone to make
the call, write the Rx and/or letter of medical necessity to the insurance
company and Durable Medical Provider. The social workers role is to link you
with appropriate services and help you determine your needs. If he or she is
doing more
than that, you might speak with his/her supervisor and/or the local social
work licensing board. As a social worker I have seen patients request all
kinds of things that may not be in their best interest. Housing assistance,
Medications, even applying for social security disability have been things that
I have tried to help patients realize they really may not need and might end
in a cycle of dependence. But if they want it, I've gone to the ends of the
earth to get it for them if that is what they truly want. It's not my call. It
is
theirs and their doctors call.
The key is not if you want it, it is if you need it. Do you have a medical
necessity
for this equipment, Rx, or other service. Denis in Texas I would suggest you go
through
an appeals process set up for not only Medicare/medicaid recipients but private
insurance companies also. Don't give up. You might try vocational rehab. in
your state. Let me know where you live in Texas. I know a few voc. rehab. folks
down that way. They
might be able to help.

bad
and all scooters are good.

Somehow, these social workers and Durable Medical Equipment people don't
understand that people also want to have a Quality of Life. In order to do
that, we need to be mobile. This is why equipment with wheels are made. Sure,
there are those who need scooters in their home for sure, but they aren't the
only ones who benefit from them.

I had the same problem when I wanted a wheelchair. She told me since I can get
around my house without it that I didn't need it. But I asked her if I was
supposed to be house bound for the rest of my life or if I were supposed to try
and have some quality to my life and go to a shopping mall, amusement park or
county fair, etc. Sure, we all have our limitations, but don't let anyone
discount what you can do and try not to let them stop you from doing it if you
can help it.

OK, I've vented also. I'll get off my soapbox now!

I had a social worker come into my home. I live in a mobile home Park and live
on the last street where I found my home. I wanted a scooter to get to the
swimming pool in the front of the park by myself. But when he saw that I was
using a walker in the house, he said NO WAY. You only get the scooter, if
you need it in the house. But, they would build me a ramp to my porch for
FREE. If I'm using a walker I don't want to walk a mile to get into my home,
it is easier to walk 5 steps up to my porch.
Thank you for letting me VENT,

etc that are refurbished. The other things are new. I don't know what must be
done to get a scooter from insurance.

Any scooter that can help you stand and get weight bearing on your legs
feet is got to be GREAT for you.
I don't understand about that someone could push you in a nursing home, what
if you need to go to the bathroom?

about this one? If so what did you hear.? Do you know of a good chair and
places to get one? It is horrible that people can't do without a power even
though we are in a nursing home. M/M insurance says we can be pushed around by
someone. WHO! I don't always get help for my other needs. The chair gives me my
life as I have it now.

RE: [TMIC] Scooter recommendations?

 I have a jazzy. a plain jane model,1 motor, 2 batteries, key for on/off,
toggle for forward/backward, speed control dial. the battery lasts for over 12
hrs. and recharges overnight. the only drawback is 3 wheels - 4 wheels would be
better for less tipping hazard. cost is around $700. it breaks down for storage
in cars. seat comes off, handle folds down but it's heavy, 2 people to lift it
into the car trunk. I also have a platform that attaches onto the hitch to
carry the scooter, it drives right up onto it. We don't ever use it now though,
since i have the van with the lift. The only problem I have is in the bottoms
of my feet. I find the pressure very painful, which is why i don't use the legs
on my wheelchair either. I don't walk, so if I'm not driving the van, I
transfer into the car and they store my chair or scooter. Good luck, Deb C in

The Scooter Store is advertised on television all of the time. They sound
like they stand behind their product and will help people with paperwork, etc.

They take Social Security benefit packages and will come to the home with
scooters to make sure the person gets the best scooter for themselves and

Best of luck to All...Plus, Jim, what is the site address to buy things that
