more deeply encoded something is, the more effort is required to decode
it. Anything else would be alchemy.

The asymmetry is simply that OVERALL decoding takes less effort than
 encoding (regardless of compression rate).

Well there is no such thing as more deeply encoded in FLAC world.

Encoding result is one approximation function regardless of encoding
level. The complexity of approximation function is quite stable across
encoding levels but not constant.

(Higher FLAC encoding level simply means that encoder puts more effort
into finding better approximation function for the given signal.)

By more deeply encoded I meant that more time was spent finding a
better approximation, thus reducing the size of the residual error that
has to be Rice encoded and stored.

It also means that there is less residual to be recovered via Rice
decoding.
However, the consequence is that the decode needs (slightly) more CPU
to regenerate the original data from the more complex approximation
function/algorithm that was selected.

There is no such thing as a truly free lunch :-)

If you follow the link below to the Flac Authors own reference website,
you will find the proof of the fact that -8 takes 10% more cpu approx
than -5 to decode.

OK - so it seems that FLAC takes less power to decode than to encode,
but that there remains a greater CPU overhead to decode files with
higher compression than lower, e.g. -5 vs. -0.

Is anyone able to explain why with a hard-wired Ethernet connection at
FLAC -5 my Touch can cope but all else being equal when on wireless it
cannot?

I'm note having any VU screensavers active - everything is 'standard'.

Is it the combination of having to receive wireless data and decode at
the more complex level just pushing the CPU power of the Touch to its
limit?

That's conceivable. It could be that the CPU is more involved with
wireless transmission than with wired ethernet. Perhaps the wireless
encryption and decryption is pushed off to the CPU by the wireless
chip's drivers.

Yes. First you have to enable sharing through Setting Advanced USB
SD Storage Sharing. You might also want to clear the share
account's password while you're at it, unless you really need the

After sharing is enabled, with a little luck you should be able to

Seems like you have 2 choices:
1) reflac everything to -5 (can be done with a script)
2) stream FLAC as WAV to remove the FLAC decoding burden from the
Touch back onto the Server.

Just to clarify I never had my FLAC files at level -8. They were all

I am just curious if the CPU limit is so tight, if that is what the

I highly doubt that Touch processing power is so small that FLAC
encoding levels would impact overall performance. After all Touch is
designed to run server software + playback.

I have never had problems with Duet and all my FLAC files are Level 8.
(Duet has less power than Touch.)

So I don't think that FLAC encoding level is a direct problem in this
case.

[SlimDevices: Touch] After firmware upgrade Touch keeps freezing followed by a reboot.

2010-04-13 Thread squeezetouch

After having a faulty Squeezebox Duet controller, which Logitech no
longer wanted to repair or replace I got the Squeezebox Touch instead.
I've only had the new Touch for about 6hrs. First thing, after it
connected to the internet, was a firmware update.

But I don't seem to have any luck getting it to work for any length of
time.
It just keeps freezing followed by a reboot. This happens during normal
use, whatever one does, either trying to play a music file or just by
changing the settings. Often within the first minute of a reboot.
It confirms that it recovered from a crash and asks if I want to let it
send a report.
I've done a 'factory reset' - still the same problem.
Have also done another firmware update - still the same problem.
Maybe somebody has come across this problem on the Touch
a) Could a firmware rollback fix this problem?
b) Also, how does one rollback the firmware on a Squeezebox Touch?

 Yes, with some small modifications:
 1. You probably want to put your own description in
 extensions/details/title
 2. You need to change the url element so it points to the zip on your
server instead of my Google Code project
 3. You can remove the sha.../sha element during testing, else you
will need to recalculate a new sha checksum everytime you change the
 zip

And you will of course need to add the url to the repository file on
your server in the SBS Settings/Plugins.

If you have a server that's available always (24/7), I'll remove it
from my repository. In that case, I suggest that you add your
repository url to the following wiki page so users know where to find
 it:
 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeCenter_Repositories

If you add it to the above wiki page we will also add it to the list of
official repositories which are available by default, this way the users
doesn't have to add the url to your repository manually in SBS
 Settings.

If your server isn't available all the time, just point me to the zip
file when you have finished tweaking it and I'll put it on my server.

It will always be available. How do I generate the sha checksum?

I'm going to develop several meter styles for the VU since that one is
very bright at night. What would be nicer would be a meter style user
in the UI instead of having to uninstall/install to change them.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How well does the Touch work?

2010-04-13 Thread mdconnelly

Interesting! I received my Touch last night and within 5 minutes had it
playing. It took me longer to get it out of the box than to get it
playing music!

The first thing I did was plug the Touch into my Oracle DAC1000 right
next to my Duet, synced the Touch with the Duet, level-matched them and
then proceeded to listen to a few of my favorite albums, occasionally
switching between Touch and Duet.

The switch was so seamless that frequently I thought it did not
actually switch. After perhaps an hour or so of listening I did begin
to hear subtle differences with the Touch being a wee bit more relaxed,
refined and defined. I do wonder if the Touch needs 'breakin' time...
anyone with experience on that?

I have not YET attempted to compare via the Touch analog outs but will
certainly do that at some point. I will say that running the Duet
digital out thru my DAC was dramatically better than the Duet analog
outs.

Overall, I am one very happy Touch owner. My Duet will soon be demoted
to kitchen duty.

Well I was quite taken aback by how much better the Touch is via my dac
than my cd players via my dac.Substantially better.I've heard an SB3 in
my system but it was a good while ago,the Touch comfortably outperforms
it from memory. You're in for a treat! Be interested in comparing the

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch released or not?

2010-04-13 Thread MadCityGeoff

The Touch status on Amazon switches back and forth between available
April 19th and unavailable. I cancelled my preorder from Amazon and
ordered the Touch from the Logitech site yesterday when the item status
changed to in stock. An hour or so after my order, the Logitech site
said out of stock. I called them and they said that they don't have
any and they're waiting for a new shipment. Their site now says in
stock again. I checked the status of my order and it said no orders
found. I'm a very dissatisfied customer.

From a command line you run:

The sha1sum tool is available by default on Linux, but on Windows you
will have to download it from here:

Someone will have to develop a third party applet to support that.
It could probably be done by patching the standard VU Meter source
code, but I think a third party applet for it is a better solution than
modifying Logitech's source directly.

Sony owns the SACD chipset in the SACD player that is used to decrypt
the SACD. It is a carefully controlled and licensed hardware
technology. Sony makes money from royalties from manufacturers of SACD
players because these manufacturers have to purchase the SACD chipset
from Sony.

The damage to Sony if that hardware technology is not needed to listen

If the material on an SACD can be accessed by a consumer without the

this costs Sony royalty payments from purchasers of the music who would
otherwise have to buy an SACD player to listen to the music. If less
SACD players are sold, Sony loses money.

Here is an analogous situation:

“each time a consumer opts to use the Streambox search engine that is
present on a modified RealPlayer rather than the Snap search engine
that is present on an unmodified RealPlayer costs RealNetworks royalty
payments from Snap”

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch in sleep mode and USB HDD

2010-04-13 Thread roubil

Hello,

Sorry for my English but I'm French.

I bought a Touch yesterday, and I plugged in a very old noname USB hard
drive.

All is OK, but when the squeezebox is in sleep mode my HDD is not off.
And if I switch off my HD I had a an error message because I didn't
eject correctly my USB Drive.

My question is if I bought a 2,5 HDD without external power, do the
Touch will switch off my HDD during the sleep mode ?
And what about a 3,5 with external power, do the Touch will send a
signal or the HDD alone will stop.

here is very small, not really enough to worry about and certainly not

name=identity of the patch. If you make several patches they should
have different values in the name attribute. Remember to also give
them unique values in the title element as this is the text that is
shown to the user.

target=specifies which player types it works on, possible values are:
- fab4 - Touch
- baby - Radio
- jive - Controller
- squeezeplay - SqueezePlay Desktop
You can also combined them, for example fab4|baby indicates that it
works on both Touch and Radio. I think Touch is the only one that have
visualizers, so fab4 should be the correct value.

version=Version of the patch, preferably you should increase it if you
make a new version of the same patch. It isn't used at the moment but
future versions of the Patch Installer applet might use the version
attribute to indicate to the user if the patch can be upgraded to a new
version. In the current version the user have to uninstall and reinstall
the patch.

minTarget=Minium version of the firmware that's required, 7.5 should
be correct for visualizers since they weren't available in earlier
versions

maxTarget=Maximum version of the firmware that is allowed. Possibly you
might want to change this in the future, but at the moment I'd recommend
that you keep 7.5 as we don't know if Logitech will change anything in
the file structure in the next version.

You can have several patch.../patch elements in the same repository
file, look at my testing repository which I linked to in an earlier post
for an example.

various reasons. DSD may survive (ironically) as an archive format,
which is ONE of the reasons why Sony invented it. Sony's cunning plan

also failed.

The EMM device is an ADC/D-D (NOT AN SACD PLAYER!) If you think that
modifying it to output a higher-rate PCM stream is a violation of DMCA
you need to do more research. It has no access controls. It has no
encryption. It does not host copyrighted works.

Maybe you are thinking that the very existence of the EMM CDSD player
violates DMCA?

attribute to indicate to the user if the patch can be upgraded to a new

Ok, thanks. That all made sense.

FYI - I received an invoice from Crutchfield today of my order. On it,

Oh, boy. :) I've done this. But it may not be easy, depending on how
familiar you are with Linux. It may also be overwritten the next time
the firmware is updated.

First, enable remote login (SSH). Settings Advanced Remote Login
Enable SSH.

Then, using an SSH client (such as 'PuTTY' (http://www.putty.org/)),
SSH into the Touch (port 22) with username=root, password=1234.

Go to the samba configuration directory.

#cd /etc/samba

Edit the smb.conf.dist file, which is a template file for the Samba
configuration file. You'll see the workgroup line near the top.

# vi smb.conf.dist

Restart Samba or reboot the Touch.

# /etc/init.d/samba restart

Yes but its not easy. You have to ssh into the Touch and modify the
samba configuration file.

There are a lot of configuration settings such as this that are in
various configuration files but don't have gui menu items.

Someone should write a wiki entry on how to ssh into the Touch and edit
these files for those that are adventurous enough to try it.

This is interesting. I saw from another thread that the touch can't see
directories shared on the network. Would it have been that much more
overhead to have the SAMBA client as well as the server running?

Regarding seeing the drive connected to the Touch on the network, has
anybody managed their library remotely using this functionality? What
I mean by this is ripping/encoding/tagging files to the drive attached
to the Touch from a computer on the network. If that works well,
that's very cool. That's how I manage the files on my server now.

If this is a common enough operation, it should be managed through the

I've copied files across and edited some tags remotely, but it's a
little slow. More so if music is playing. If you're initially loading
a drive with gigabytes of music I'd definitely recommend doing so with
the drive connected to a fast computer. Use the network sharing
ability for adding a couple albums at a time.

I don't even manage new rips on my server across the network, prefering
to rip files and modify tags on my local desktop machine first, and then
copy them over to the server when finished. I think that method will
work better for the Touch from a performance standpoint.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Access the connectet USB Drive?

2010-04-13 Thread maggior

Thanks Jim. That's what I suspected given the talk of performance
limitations.

I manage my rips over the network for convenience. My server is in the
basement running Linux. I perfer to use dbPowerAmp, a Windows app, to
rip. I rip/encode to FLAC at the same time. It saves me the step of
having to copy the file over when I'm done. I was surprised that this
worked as well as it does when I first tried it. The network isn't a
signifcant bottleneck.

I suspect this works well because dbPowerAmp rips to memory and encodes
from there. So it's not a case where the data sent across the network,
read back over the network, encoded, and then written back over the
network.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] After firmware upgrade Touch keeps freezing followed by a reboot.

2010-04-13 Thread JohnSwenson

What is your configuration? Are you using the internal server (USB drive
connected to Touch), an external server (Squeezebox Server on another
computer) or connected to mysqueezebox.com over the internet?

If the Touch is connected to a network (for connection to a server or
mysqueezebox.com) is it connected with a cable or via WiFi?

If its connected via WiFi, try running with a cable to see if that
might make a difference. If you are already connecting with a cable try
connecting to mysqueezebox.com and try an internet radio station and see
how that behaves.

I would try and isolate the problem, the ones that I can think of are:

Connection, cable vs WiFi.
Server, builtin server, external server or mysqueezebox.com
Firmware, try reloading the firmware
Hardware, there are issues with some USB drives not working well with
Touch.

The Touch has a rear brace attached to it. One could remove this and
then use that to fashion a brace/bracket to while you wait for the wall
mount to be released. You might ask if one of the guys that has one can
send you the template for the wall mount, that way you can cut the
whole at the same time as the one for the TV. Then mount it when you
get the bracket. You could put a piece of sheet metal on the gap
between sheet rock and back wall to set the Touch on until the Mount is
available. Just use your imagination.

And it is critical if you have DTS or Dolby files whose encoding breaks
if the volume is not 100% thus giving you loud shreaking noise to melt

Now that's friggin' awesome!!! I like the retro font - looks like
something you'd see on an alarm clock or a transistor radio from the
 50's or 60's.

Thanks. I'm going to go ahead and finish up the big png file in the
meantime. This will get out there one way or another.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch released or not?

2010-04-13 Thread tebling

Just a quick report from New Zealand. All the online retailers were
showing a warehouse stock of 9 units at the beginning of the week (NZ
is small enough that all the retailers share the same distributor), and
that's down to 7 now. Actually, it should be 6 units as my order just
went through!

Will report again when the new family member arrives.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Help Buying 2.5 External Drive

2010-04-13 Thread SteveEast

I've just been trying a couple of older WD Passport drives - a 160GB and
a 60GB. I did manage to get the 160GB to connect, scan and play music -
once. But after I rebooted the Touch the drive then went into what
looked like a continuous power up/down cycle - no matter what I did.
The 60 never worked at all.

I've also tried a couple of small (1GB, 2GB) USB memory sticks and they
work fine.

Steve.

I fiddled with it, it's up and running SB3 moved to kitchen.
I have to make ssh work on it..

No self control...

[SlimDevices: Touch] Where is Date Time setting?

2010-04-13 Thread mr-b

It seems very odd, but I can't find the Date Time setting on the
Touch. (It's present under Settings Screen on the Radio, Controller
and SqueezePlay)

Call me European, but the 12h clock really irks me. ;)

The setting is in the same place. The menus may be different depending
on whether you're connected to mysb.com or a local server. Drives
everyone crazy.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] question for owners (wall mount)

2010-04-13 Thread pippin

Well, they did a few prototypes that look good from a mold perspective
so I believe the tool must have been there.
But I agree, if they haven't used them until now...
Any official statement?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Where is Date Time setting?

Very odd - the setting is now back again. Maybe it's because I was
alternating between touch screen and remote, and the font size change
threw me. Or that some menus seem to be entered from the bottom,
