Not sure about the polish, but I'm thinking about getting an
iTouch-type skin for mine. With a 3-year-old, I'm sure it'd be scuffed
in no-time.

One I have on my iPhone is at www.bestskinever.com

A 4.3 screen skin would work to cover the screen, this is probably
closest -

I'm thinking about getting as much coverage as possible and getting a
generic one and see what to do with the leftovers:

[SlimDevices: Touch] A quick question for Iphone Re: Touch in car

2010-04-29 Thread Gomez

If its a dedicated supply, you could run an inverter for the Touch and
then use a large USB drive also. I would only do this if this 12VDC
didn't drop to low when starting the vehicle to cause the inverter to
drop the Touch and USB drive.

 As for what I did, I installed a 4 Amp DC/DC 12 to 5 VDC power supply
to power the Touch and I am using a 640GB USB powered Toshiba USB
Drive. The Touch sits in the little cubby hole in front of the cup
holders with the USB drive sitting on top of the metal touch support.
RCA outs run to Aux In on the head unit.

I will try to answer any questions you might have. I also have a bad
habit of offering advice when asked for suggestions.

Thanks Mate
The supply is off the leisure battery so engine cranking does not
affect it. I am not too keen on running inverters they tend to be a bit
wasteful when your not on mains hook up.
I am using a Samsung s2 500g bus powered external hard drive that
works perfectly with the Touch and even goes to sleep after 5 Mins
idle.
The 4 AMP DC/DC 12V TO 5V PSU sounds perfect and should consume far
less power.
Did you make the DC/DC Psu or buy it ?

Thanks for your time

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Connection to mysqueezebox.com not happening

2010-04-29 Thread Hickup

The end of this thread... the Touch is up and running (more or less).

The update procedure will only work if the Diagnosis screen is accessed
from the first available opprotunity - the language selection. My Touch
is now connected to my NAS with the Squeezebox Server and plays music
just fine. If I do try to connect to Internet Radio or similar, it will
tell me, that this Squeezebox is already registered with a different
user! Seems like I need to debug some more (or call Logitech again -
extremely helpful and friendly hotline, btw.), just in case I will make
use of that feature.

Kind regards,
Frank

I haven't check yet but I think the bigger question right now is if the

I'll try sometime this weekend but if anyone else has a result please

It is possible to use a USB Hub to connect a HDD and pen instead of
removing the USB directly on the touch everytime I want to use my pen.

Thanks in advance!

Just to commment on the quality of the Touches digital output..?

had my Touch running for a week now, and can safely say that John and
Pat were right about the quality of the digital out..

MILES better than the SB3.

How much of that is down to the redesigned SPDIF or the better PSU, or
the combination of both? I dunno, but like the tinfoil hat comments :)
- it doesnt matter a hoot.

Bloody good work by all concerned...outstanding.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch - first impressions and questions

2010-04-29 Thread Amagerland

I recently bought the Touch, so far I am having a lot of fun and mainly
using it as internetradio.
A couple of questions:
1. Tracklistings are missing from a service like radiodavidbyrne. The
track info do indeed appear in iTunes Radio - but not on the Touch. Why
is that?
2. When using the Touch with a USB key for playing my own files, I
loose contact with the apps on the touch. I cannot for instance go into
my favourites and select a radiostation when the suqeezebox server is
running. It seems a bit cumbersome to always have to press a lot of
virtual buttons in order to switch between usb-stick and internet
radio. Am I missing something (a manual, maybe :-)

Apart from that it seems a great purchase and the internet radio
feature is a great way of discovering new music - which is why the
tracklistings would be great.

Regards!

Yeah - computers are just ones and zeroes - that's cause they're
digital. S/PDIF is really analogue (representation of a digital
signal) and thus rather different...

Once sharing is enabled you can treat the Touch live a network drive.

Why would you bother? If someone has access to that file, whether or
not they need to decrypt it is the least of your concerns. They have
root access to a box on your network, having your WPA key is pointless
they are ON the network already.

Also if the key was encrypted you would not want to hash it because
then you could not use it. The box will need to be able to decrypt it
WITHOUT need external input otherwise you would have to provide
creditinals every time you wanted your Touch to get online. So the
root user would have to be able to decrypt it, so guess what if a user
can read that file they are root. Not really going to stop them from
decrypting anything if they are root. So that encryption becomes a
needless complication for no gain.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Custom Browse or Touch problem?

2010-04-29 Thread Phileas

I've asked this question before - I'm hoping to get a better response
this time.

I'm not sure if this is a Custom Browse plugin issue or a Touch
problem.

I browse my music by ComposerWorkAlbumTrack.
When at the Work or Album level, I want to be able to play all tracks
in that Work/Album by using touch, i.e. not using the remote.
Play all does nothing as far as I can see.

Also, if I change to a different album, the Now Playing screen and
playlist don't seem to update to the new album.

[SlimDevices: Touch] So, I'm having problems with my Touch. User error?

2010-04-29 Thread crimscrem

I have a little over 600 GB of music stored on a WD Elements 1.5 TB hard
drive. I have that directly connected to my Touch. My entire reason
for getting the Touch was so I would not have to use my laptop. My
Touch is directly connected to my router (i.e., not using wireless).

I'm having two problems. One is with album art. The second is with
speed.

First problem:

That 600 GB of music contains album art. The music that I ripped named
all the album art folder.jpg. These have always show up on my Touch
without any problems. The music I received from a friend has all the
album art named as coverart.jpg. I understand that coverart.jpg is
a name that the Touch will not recognize. So I changed all of them to
folder.jpg. I did a wipe and rescan on the Touch. Still no art.
Any suggestions on what I need to do now?

Second problem:

My Touch is operating really, really slowly. It is taking upwards of
40 second to a minute before a song plays. (These are songs stored on
the connected HD.) Any suggestions on why?

Plan of action:

I plan to do a factory reset to see if that will work. I'm hoping it
will because as is, the Touch is not usable for me. I'd really like to
hear your suggestions/advice. Thank you.

Yes. I've tried wiping and rescanning a couple of times now. I do that
directly on the Touch, and at night. I then check to make sure that
it's scanning, and then I go to bed. In the morning, I check it out
and make sure the scanning is complete. There are three Completed
notations. I then try to listen to the music.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] So, I'm having problems with my Touch. User error?

2010-04-29 Thread peterw

Regarding the second problem, I'd be curious what 'top' shows when that
happens. Are you comfortable enabling SSH on your Touch and logging in
to run 'top' while recreating the problem?

FWIW, in the last couple months I've had intermittent trouble with a WD
Caviar Green drive in my DVR / SBS server. When the problem occurs,
'top' shows high iowait percentages. Apparently the fix might be as
simple as 'partitioning the drive carefully'
One annoying factor for me is that the drive caused no trouble for the
first couple months I had it in service.

All must stuff is in the sda1 folder. I was told that these are most

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Server stopping.

2010-04-29 Thread JohnSwenson

Most of the problems people seem to be having are caused by a scan not
fully completing. This can leave an unfinished database on the disk
which can cause all kinds of problems. So the first step is to
successfully do a complete scan. This can take a very long time if the
disk has a large number of songs (multiple tens of thousands). Be
prepared to let it sit for a long time.

Here are some thoughts on scanning and a procedure which might help:

Just a few thoughts on scanning in general. The scan stores data in the
.Squeezebox dir on the disk. If there is an existing one from an
external server or if there is a partial one from a scan which did not
complete, its a good idea to delete it before starting the scan. I've
seen the scanner do weird things when it couldn't correctly read the
database. Turn off sharing, this leaves a little more memory which
might help. Don't plug in an SD card. Don't do anything else while
scanning, don't touch the screen, don't display pictures, nothing.

The sequence I have found that gives the best chance of success is to
disconnect the drive, unplug the power on the Touch. Plug the drive
into another computer and delete .Squeezebox directory. Some OSes treat
a file that starts with a '.' as hidden, so make sure you turn on
hidden files. Plug power into the Touch, let it sit for a couple
minutes so all startup and initialization precesses have finished. Plug
in the drive. When it comes up with the message about using the eject
button go ahead and select the item for viewing the scan progress.
After this don't touch the Touch until its done or you are really sure
its hung. This may take a LOOONG time. When done eject the drive, unplug
drive, unplug power. Plug in power, wait a couple minutes, plug in
drive, wait for (hopefully much shorter) rescan. At this point you
should be good to go for playing music.

Every time you plug in the drive it will do a scan of all files on the
disk, looking for new or updated files. Even on very large disks this
should only take about 15 minutes. If you see it taking much longer
than that there is most likely a corrupt database on the disk.

Artwork can sometimes cause the scanner to crash. Large artwork is
resized by the scan process, large artwork can cause the Touch to run
out of memory and crash, leaving a corrupted database. If your scan
dies during the artwork phase you might want to look at the size of the
artwork and externally shrink them if they are quite large.

When playing music from the builtin server try and reduce other things
going on such as image viewers and animated screen savers. These can
use up memory and or CPU cycles which can cause problems.

If you have followed this procedure and you still have problems, please
give some information when you post about it here. Such as how many
songs you have on the disk, what type of file format they are, how long
the scan took, if the scan failed what was the last thing displayed on
the screen or anything ales you might find helpful to someone trying to
help debug the situation.

Thanks,

John S.

Try a factory reset. There is a button just above where the power
connects to the back of the reseiver. Hold that in until the screen
shows it's been reset. However, before you do that disconnect the power
from the wireless router and modem you are using and leave them
unplugged for about 30 seconds. Plug them back in then do the reset.
Keep us posted.

Sounds like I would just use 12 leisure battery also. The DC/DC PS is
an ordered part. I will see if I have the part number and seller handy.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SSH into my Touch, any nice things to explore?

2010-04-29 Thread erland

The default VU meter images can be found here:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/jive/7.5/trunk/squeezeplay/src/squeezeplay/share/applets/WQVGAsmallSkin/images/UNOFFICIAL/VUMeter/

You can also install the SqueezePlayAdmin plugin/applet combination I
have in my testing repository, they make it possible to browse the
Touch file system and get any file on the Touch. However, it only works
for copying from the Touch to the PC.

scp is the way to go when copying files from PC to the Touch.

TinySC crashes on radio stations, not just HD playback.
Scan was complete before streaming (very small library, almost no
art).
No visualizers in use.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Vs Transporter as a transport

2010-04-29 Thread Peter314

I haven't made that direct comparison. I marginally preferred the Bel
Canto sound from the digital SB+ to that of the internal DAC, so that's
how I had it set up. Listening to the sound from the two digital outs
via the DAC I couldn't tell a difference (both sounded great) so I'm
now using the Touch with the DAC and selling the SB+.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] digital silence between tracks?

Phil Leigh;541216 Wrote:
I'm pretty sure your gap problem is indeed a different issue. I've not
seen any gapless problem at 88.2/96, and I've seen no other reports.
What server hardware are you using?

It turns out there is no gap problem. I was using source material which
had a tiny bit of silence at the beginning of each track! I opened them
up in an editor and there it was. I tested 24/96 with several different
files, some I created myself, some from HDtracks, and there is no gap
problem. Sorry for muddying the waters; it's a weird fluke that these
files had these bits of silence in them. I have updated the bug report
to reflect my new discovery.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] So, I'm having problems with my Touch. User error?

If I had very specific instructions, I would be comfortable.

When I use my laptop to see what devices are connected to my network, I
 see the following:

 logs
 media-sda1
 media-sdb1
 media-sdc1
 media-sdd1
 printers

All must stuff is in the sda1 folder. I was told that these are most
 likely partitions.

Really? sda1, sdb1, sdc1? Do you have three other drives? In Linux
naming conventions, sd means SCSI or SATA, a means first disk, 1
means first partition. So if you had one disk, I'd expect sda1, sda2,
sda3, sda4 if you had 4 partitions. Anyhow...

First, grab an SSH client if you're on Windows. I like Putty a lot. If
you're on a Mac, there's already an ssh command you can run in
Terminal.app.
Home Settings Advanced Remote Login and Enable SSH
Log in to your Touch with your SSH client
At the command line, type *top* and hit return

You should see something like

Code:

I expect that when you have trouble you'll see a high %CPU number by
one of the perl processes -- slimserver.pl or gdresized.pl. In my case,
the process %CPU were low but the overall io was high. And the darn
disk LED lit constantly.

To quit 'top', you can just tap the q key. To log out, it's the
exit command. Or you could just close your SSH window, no big deal.

I generally recommend that you leave SSH disabled. Oh, and you'll get
bigger logs on your hard drive if you make a directory named log in
the top level of your hard drive (and reboot Touch so Touch sees it;
safest way to reboot is to SSH in and run the reboot command).
