I usually see about 10-20% CPU for 'jive' and 4-7% each for the
jive_alsa processes when playing music from a USB drive. The perl
slimserver process sits at about 5% for the first few seconds after a
new song starts (and jive takes about 25% CPU then, too) and then drops
to 0%. io% jumps to 10-15% for about a second when a new song starts,
and then settles down to 0%.

And it's one physical drive? Weird. I wonder what 'fdisk -l' would show

  /dev/sda1 1973378180291 b Win95 FAT32
  /dev/sda2 * 1 1 0 0 Empty

or what you'd see with *dmesg | grep '^sd '* -- I see

The Pandora app layout is bad. I have to believe it's because it was
designed for the Chumby and now it has too much space with the large
screen and different aspect ratio. I'd imagine they will create a new
one.

It did not come with a remote and I have not taken it apart to see if
there is IR. I don't think there is...

People should not compare the two on functionality. This is not why I
posted. They are different animals in the same appliance category.

The Dash just went on sale yesterday.

2010-04-30 Thread peterw

Thanks for posting the pics! I can't believe how much wasted space there
is in some of those Dash screens, especially the Now Playing screen.

Dash also doesn't have an infrared receiver, right? At first glance it
looks like it could be a great companion to a Squeezebox Receiver --
use the Dash for a large(r) screen control interface. But if I can't
point a cheap IR remote control at it to make things happen, I'm not
interested.

BTW, on Amazon, Touch is outselling Dash -- Touch is #350 in
Electronics, and Dash is #407. I looked a couple days ago and the
numbers were more like #240 and #290, with Touch still ahead. :-)

Pro:

Netflix
Amazon video
Pandora
Lots and lots of Chumby apps.
Big screen
Sits flat on the table and upright.

Con:

The ability to play music and video from USB is late and the menu for
the feature displays "Coming soon". It's not known when it's coming,
but since this feature is plastered all over the docs and website I
guess it should be sometime this year ;)

Speaker don't sound great.

External USB soundcard is not working and the unit wont boot if it's
present.

Headphone out is marginal.

NOT an open system like the Chumby. Crypto signed OS... no SSH...not
even running a web server. Likely to support Netflix and Amazon etc.
Gotta give to get I suppose.

You might want to consider just getting a Touch.

The audiophile section folks say that its much better sounding than the
older SqueezeBoxen (like the Duet). It may be sufficient, without having
to spring for an external DAC.

And, of course, you can use the external DAC if you think its needed.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Upgrade Squeezebox Duet to Touch?

2010-04-30 Thread magiccarpetride

I am an audiophile on a budget, so I have opted for using Duet with an
external DAC (Beresford Caiman), instead of going with the much more
expensive Transport. Some reports claim that Beresford Caiman can match
(and even surpass) the DAC that Transport internally uses.

However, what is not clear to me is whether the Transport is a better
'transport' for digital signal than Duet or Touch.

I am pretty certain that Beresford Caiman is a better DAC than the one
that is shipping inside the Touch. What I'm asking here is should I
consider replacing my Duet as a 'transport' with Touch? Is Touch a
better transport than Duet? Keep in mind that, regardless of whether I
upgrade Duet or not, I will be keeping my Beresford Caiman as an
external DAC, and will bypass whatever the internal DAC may be.

Also, I am not at all interested in convenience (don't care about the
user interface, pretty pictures, touch or wheel etc.), only interested
in improving the sound.

Well maybe it doesn't require SBS and only MySB.
But being a computer utility I presume you must have your PC on so
using the Touch's inbuilt server in place of a PC won't work.

But you can connect Touch directly to MySB to utilize DSBridge, if
that's how it worked before. :)

I also realy like my touch , but luckily I also have a controller.

The wieving angle and glare is a minus with the Touchs display even if
the actual quality is much better than controller and radio (it does
render colors correctly and has no pixelated artifacts), but no font
makes it as visble as the SB3. I could read the SB3 from anywhere in
the same room with touch i have to squint.

A VFD is actually easier to read with smaller font's than the Touch.
My Meridian HT processor and DVD player uses VFD's they are splendid

The text gets larger when you press the remote, and you can cycle the
now playing screen to a mood wo cover art to max out fontsize.

But I can live with that as I find it's versatility and sound-quality
really god, and it is built to a price point,

I don't use Spotify or DSBridge, but my understanding is that DSBridge
is a computer utility that "bridges" the SBS server program with
Spotify servers.
So without a computer running to run both SBS and DSBridge then you
won't get Spotify.

If using the Touch's inbuilt server you are bypassing the need for a
computer.
If you want DSBridge you will have to run Touch off of your computer.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch - first impressions and questions

2010-04-30 Thread Ikabob

I think it is too bad that you feel that strongly about those couple
things. I , on the other hand, love the touch and the screen is
adequate for my use. The functionality is superior and the angle is not
a problem for me(the estblished angle keeps the center of rotation lower
and therefore affords less falling potential). By keeping the screen
smaller, you also can keep the cost lower too. I think there is a
setting for larger characters to the screen if visibility is a problem.
Some day they may produce a "Squeezepad" that is largerbut I am sure
it might also be more costly too. The functions ,to me, that are most
important are
fidelity,reception,stability,versitility,reliability,display
clarity,touch responsiveness,ability to synchronize,etc. For me,screen
size is not important nor is the angle. I can live with them. So, enjoy
the Squeezebox Touch and the beautiful music, talk radio, athletic
events, podcasts,USB compatibility, and all the assets it can bring. I
hope after you analyze everything you may publically be a little more
positive about your purchase and the relatively short time you had to
wait. I am sorry but, I think Logitech thought it out very nicely. IMHO

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch - first impressions and questions

2010-04-30 Thread yockers

Hi,

Well I just got mine today, after the very LONG wait we've all had.

I can only say that the display itself is a big big disappointment one
two scores (I've only had the thing running for 20 minutes)

1. Size. The major visual difference of this unit is obviously, it's
display. Full colour, Album Art, etc etc. So why SO SO small ? Very
disappointed on this score. In terms of ease of reading from a
distance, the SB3 Classic was superior.

2. Angle of view. If I'm standing up and walking past the unit, I can
see the screen. If I sit on the couch opposite it, my eye level is
lower and the screen cannot be seen at any other angle. Again, very
poor and not as good as my SB3.

On the sound, I'm no audiophile, but I can tell there is a big
difference in sound quality on my setup.

Overall, I'm gutted, after such a long wait, that Logitech have chosen
to release the unit with such a poor display functionand so
far..the touch-screen function's only benefit is being able to control
it up close, after having had to walk up to the unit because I can't
see what's on the screen.

If you're reading this and are considering purchasing it. Don't be
tempted by the imagery. Your SB3 is better.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/192

2010-04-30 Thread R Johnson

Please note: I did not expect to hear radical differences, especially on
my modest system. And I didn't. Further listening is needed. I also plan
to listen on a friend's high-end system. That will be an even more
interesting comparison.

I'm trying to maintain an open mind. While some skepticism is
warranted, I think the 24/88.2 download is truly higher resolution than
the CD at 16/44.1.

I wish HDtracks provided clear and accurate technical information about
the process for the 24/88.2 versions. I wish the CSO Resound production
team directly produced the tracks and artwork / liner notes. The idea
of scanning & ripping the physical CD and SACD products seems rather

since i plugged in the usb and run the internal server i must connect to

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Question about iPeng, TinySC and the Squeezebox Touch

2010-04-30 Thread JohnSwenson

I think the question is:

can an iPhone control a Touch without a router, just the iPhone and a
Touch, no router in the house?

Theoretically yes, its called an ad hoc network, but there is no easy
way to set it up, it would take a linux networking guru and the
equivalent for the iPhone to do it.

These systems are designed to work with a router (access point)
mediating the wireless network. Its MUCH MUCH easier to set things up
with a router in the house, even if the router is not connected to the
internet in any way.

Of course its best to have the router connected to the internet so you
can receive internet radio stations and music services etc. But even if
you don't have any internet connection in your house its still best to
have a router for the WiFi network.

If HDTracks is asking more money for its 24/88.2 downloads compared to
just buying a CD of the same music, and yet they don't have obviously
better quality, then what is the point in purchasing these downloads
from them?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/192

2010-04-30 Thread mortslim

This is just another example of the lack of accurate information from
HDTracks.
They ask for more money for their so called high resolution downloads
compared to just getting a CD. And yet they don’t have accurate
information.

HDTracks has mislabeled the download here.

Or maybe they do have accurate labels in that maybe what was downloaded
was only a copy of a CD, not a higher quality SACD ?

Previously it was pointed out that HDTracks has represented to this
thread inconsistent information about exactly how it creates its
digital downloads.

And HDTracks’ website also is vague as to what is the facts about
creating the download of its “24/88.2” files because investigation has
shown that at least in some cases these downloads are not recorded at
that spec, but instead they are converted to that spec later, resulting
in a possible misunderstanding of what is being purchased and also
resulting in lesser fidelity.

Why doesn’t HDTracks seem to have any interest in presenting accurate
information about what it is selling?

These issues are important to this thread because what is the point of
a desire for a higher spec Squeezebox if the consumer has no confidence
in what he is buying to play on his Squeezebox?

[SlimDevices: Touch] AlbumArt of Songs without(!) Album didn't show up!?

2010-04-30 Thread Shepardos

Hi Folks,

I have a problem. All my FLAC songs are correctly covered with the
proper AlbumArt. If I play a song from a Album (with Album information
like: Play House) than I see the correct AlbumArt.

BUT: If I play a Song without Album informations, than I only see a
default AlbumArt. This happens only on the Touch on the Server I see
the proper AlbumArt.

Is there a setting to always use the tagged AlbumArt from the files?

Cheers

Are you running off an external server or the builtin server? Are you
connected to the internet with a wire or wireless?

This message sounds like the server cannot find a DNS server or the DNS
server its pointing to does not have the radio stations in its table.

Can you get to those stations from a computer on your network?

IPeng works over a WiFi network. Your iPhone/iTouch needs to have iPeng
which needs to be on the WiFi network. The Touch needs to be Ethernet or
WiFi'd into your network so they talk over the network to each other.

It is beyond being a priority for the points I make, I am saying there
is NO point to encrypting the wifi key in this application.

As for open ports, yea those are probably not needed to be open and

Hello Quad,

Just a quick question, you mention you use sub-genres, how do you
accomplish this? Do you create a custom field? Do you use one of the
existing tag fields? I find I classify a lot of music as rock but I
need sub-genres (pop, alternative, classic, etc...).

Thanks,

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/192

2010-04-30 Thread R Johnson

Haven't done more listening yet, but...

I noticed that the liner notes provided with the 24/88.2 HDtracks
download of the CSO/Haitink Bruckner #7 showed two catalog numbers.
CSOR 901 704 and CSOR 901 706. Its scan of the jewel case insert shows
CSOR 901 704. I stopped by the CSO's (reduced size) Store last night to
see if this was the CD or the SACD. It was the CD.

As HDtracks also offers the 16/44.1 standard CD download, I suppose
they simply used one scan for both versions. Since the liner notes PDF
file name ends in "9017046" this seems likely. Still it would have been
nice to see the SACD's catalog number on the scan of the insert.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Scan experiences with the internal squeezebox server of the Touch (USB-HD)

2010-04-30 Thread mlsstl

While I'm very pleased with the performance of the Touch with my
external music server (46,000 songs) I've not had a successful scan by
the built-in server in three tries with two different copies of the
external backup drives. The first scan ran 14 or 15 hours before I gave
up. The next two tries seemed to scan through the drive in 4 or 5 hours
only to have the internal server crash at the very end. (And yes,
firmware is up to date.)

I did try it with a 2 GB USB flash drive and it all worked very nicely.

Since the Touch works extremely well for the purpose I bought it for,
I'm pleased. However, I can't say I'm impressed with the Tiny SBS
function, especially since this was the cause of the four month delay
in product release.

Thank you for this. I'm using Windows Vista, so I'll download putty.
I'll try this when I get home. What is considered to be high %CPU and
"io" numbers?

Yes, those are the "Folders" I saw when I used my laptop to see what
devices were on the network (my hard drive connected to my Touch).
When I have the hard drive connected to my laptop and I look in the F:
drive, I don't see those.

I figured out the album art situation. The tracks in the folders were
not tagged with the jpg file. So when even though the album art was
contained in the folder with the tracks, they weren't linked up. I
spent some time using mediamonkey to tag the tracks with the jpg file.
I then did a wipe and scan overnight. This morning, I saw the album art
for the ones that I "fixed."

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Album art as screen saver?

2010-04-30 Thread erland

As far as I know there are three different solutions for this:
1. Setup "Now Playing" screen saver and touch the now playing screen
until you get the screen with full size album art.
2. Install third party Custom Clock applet through
Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer and select one of the styles that
show album art
3. Install third party Album Flow applet through
Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer and select one of the modes that
show album art

There could be other options too which I'm not aware of

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Scan experiences with the internal squeezebox server of the Touch (USB-HD)

2010-04-30 Thread perro6969

I sent the squeezebox touch back.
They can't be serious that a simple HDD should take more than 9 hours
to be scaned! I’m really disappointed about that.
If you want the touch as a stand alone player, just forget it!

Thanks for the input, Holkoz. Sounds like the digital outs of the new
Touch are improved. Good to hear.

Cool! I assume that if one had a playlist of 24/94, 16/44.1, 24/88.2,
24/48 etc. that it would also all work Ok/? I'm concerned that that bit
of code to stitch to 44.1 was there for a reason
