Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] A few questions before buying the Touch

2010-05-02 Thread Phil Leigh

realmassy;542238 Wrote:
I think I'll give the new Touch a try the next week, and I have some
 questions before buying it.
I used to own a Duet, but I didn't like the setup too much, the pc
always on (I had a SheevaPlug), a dedicated router...
Currently I'm using a Teac Wap, and it works perfectly: I have an
external disc attached to one of the two USB, I don't need any PC, and
it comes with a nice Touch remote controller.
But, the new Squeezebox Touch is said to have a better digital output
(I use an external dac) and it comes with a built-in Squeezebox
 Server.
My idea is to attach the same HD (with its own power adapter) to the
touch, connect the touch to the wifi, and use my IPhone + IPeng as
remote. I don't have any plan to listen to high resolution files, but
this would be an obvious plus.
My question is: can you see any problem with a setup like this? I've
read there are some issues playing high resolution files from the
attached drive, but what about 16/44 FLAC files? Also, can you safely
use the IPhone and IPeng as controller? Can you set the digital output
 level to 100%?
 Thanks in advance.
There are no serious issues (ie that can't be lived with or worked
around for a while) with USB playback of FLAC.

Certainly FLAC 16/44.1 or 24/48 has no issues.

higher-res has 2 issues:
SOME 24/96 files at flac -8 can stutter...simply re-flac them to -5
When skipping tracks at 24/96 you can get a momentary loss of lock from
an external DAC - this will be fixed in firmware at some point
soonish...
This lst problem doesn't affect normal playback, only when you jump
mid-track to another track

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] A few questions before buying the Touch

2010-05-02 Thread realmassy

Thanks for your reply.
I'm wondering whether the sluggishness of the scan using the built-in
server could be a problem.
Is there any work-around to build the database on a pc and then
re-attach the drive? Some people seem to have problems with big music
collections.
As I posted in a different thread maybe the scanning from the external
drive using the tiny server could be optimized, maybe handling less
tags, or loading the extra tags on demand.
One more question, can I use a squeezebox server on my laptop and still
attach the USB drive to the Touch? I don't have any NAS at the moment,
but my laptop is almost always on, but obviously I can't attach a drive
and move it with me. If the hard drive is shared in the network through
Samba, then this could work from me.
Thanks

No, at least no easy one.
Theoretically it's just a SQLite database so suspect it should be
possible to create it off line, the problem is just that the paths are
probably going to be different if you mount the USB drive on a PC.

realmassy;542500 Wrote:

If you have a large collection, I'd personally advice you to run a
standalone server. Get a Vortexbox or Sheevaplug or use an old
PC/laptop, you will avoid a lot of problems.

Scanning is normally only an issue the first time.
The problem is for people with large collection where the first time
never finish. I'm not sure what Logitech's perspective is on this,
they can either ignore the problems and state that large collections
aren't supported or optimize the code to decrease the functionality
even more. I personally don't think the number of tags is the problem,
the problem is probably more related to the number of files that needs
to be handled.

Thanks Erland.
It sounds if I'll go with the Touch route I definitely need an external
server, probably I'd choose a Vortexbox appliance, so I have the storage
as well. But I have to sort the issue with the network out. The
Vortexbox has no wi-fi capability, and I can't put the appliance near
the router (my wife would kill me). Anyone has experience with network

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch = Awesome! Initial thoughts

2010-05-02 Thread Paul_B

I'm still a bit undecided on my Touch. It has directly replaced a SB3
which I've had for well over 2 years.

On the plus side the Touch is very well built, sturdy and feels heavy
and well constructed.

It just works, plug it in, eneter your wireless key and off it goes.

The Touch interface is very responsive with no lag.

Sound quality is great.

The things I'm not sure about are:-
- Is it the right size? I sit on a sofa about 6' from the Touch and the
screen isn't very clear at this distance. Maybe it could do with being a
tad bigger, maybe another inch in the diagonal
- The LCD screen is good but not great, it looks to have LEDs at the
side for the screen backlight. This gives ridges in the brightness
across the screen when close-up. Maybe an OLED screen in V2 would
help?
- I want to see many more preferences available through the Squeezebox
Server as it is very limted in this area.

I'm considering putting the SB3 back and placing the Touch somewhere
else where I'll make better use of the screen and Touch functionallity

Having received my Touch this week I think it is good but not great. I
think the size is wrong for what it is designed to be and maybe should
be closer to that of the Sony Dash. I agree it is hard to read from a
distance and will probably go back to my SB3 and put the Touch
somewhere else.

Also in v2 of the product many of the LCD issues would go away if OLED

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch + Cambridge Audio DacMagic

2010-05-02 Thread Mel-UK

Hi all, I've just got my Touch, so I’ve decided to join this forum.

As the title indicates, I am using my Touch with a Cambridge Audio
DacMagic. Somewhat rashly, I bought the DAC at the same time as the
Touch, assuming it would improve on that built into the Touch. So does
it? Well, after a lot of cable swapping and listening, I would say,
“yes it does”, but not by much. As you may know, the DacMagic offers
three filters which I find only subtly different. The Touch DAC is
essentially a fourth option which is defintly on a par with the other
three. Having said that, I would rank the Touch DAC as my least
favourite of the four options (but still very good, as I said, the
differences are subtle). As an example, I now routinely use the minimum
phase filter on the DacMagic, which to me, sounds the most ‘human’ of
the available options. By contrast, the Touch DAC is as detailed as the
DacMagic, but a bit more ‘hi-fi’ sounding. If I play a track like
Floyd’s ‘Great Gig in the Sky’ the DacMagic (min phase) can send
shivers down the spine in a way that the Touch DAC doesn’t quite
achieve. But I emphasise again, the differences are not great and I
could happily live with just the Touch.
By the way, I also think the Touch/DacMagic stacks-up well against my
(way more costly) CD player (Naim CDX2).

I bought a WD 640 GB My Passport Essential, and it works well powered

matches the finish on the Touch quite nicely.

If you use the WD Smartware software, you can change the idle timeout,
which defaults to 10 minutes.
I also used WD Smartware to hide the virtual CD ROM drive. Another

I think I prefer a SheevaPlug with a USB drive attached, though. It's
so small I can put it close to the router, and my wife won't noticed it
:-D
The Touch would be in the same room, about 5 meters from the router, so
I should be able to stream wireless even high resolution files.
Any network issues in this case?
Can I safely assume the audio quality of the digital output of the
Touch is the same when connected wirelessly?
Any issues with the SheevaPlug processor?
Is it powerful enough to decode 96/24 files? I used to own a SheevaPlug
for my Duet, but I sold it thinking I'd have never used it with the
Touch :-)

Sorry for all these questions, but I want to make sure I can have a
good setup :-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)

2010-05-02 Thread mkt

@John S. Thanks!

Lets get the specifics of your system:

are you running external server or internal server?
External.

If external server, how are you connecting, wired or wireless?
Wireless. WPA.

If external server what format are you streaming?
Flac.

Do you knopw what compression level the files are at?
No. Is there a linux command to tell that? I have the same Claire
Martin Linn recording as the poster above. Mine is 113 MB.

Are you displaying artworK? Is the artwork changing when you hear a
problem?
Seems to skip whether art work is displayed or not.

Are you running any animated visualizer (VU meters, spectrum analyzer)
No.

Is the now playing screen scrolling text?
Yes.

are you viewing pictures at the same time?
No.

Does the problem happen only at the beginning of tracks or in other
places?
Only at the beginning.

There are many things that can use up CPU cycles that can cause audio
problems with high sample rate files. We need to figure out which one
it is in your case and come up with a way to get around it.

I get the following in /var/log/messsages on the touch when I skip to

Also you can free some wifi capacity by wire other stuff that seems

Also Touch use slightly more CPU on wifi .
And filling up the buffer goes slower with 24/96 files over wifi you

No way I can pass a ethernet cable in my lounge :-) And I've just

This is the reason I used to have a dedicated router when I owned the

If I can't use the wireless for the Touch I can try the network over

[SlimDevices: Touch] Hmnnn..any reason why my box might have been resealed at the factory??

2010-05-02 Thread Gazjam

50 views on the General Discussion forum and no replies, so trying
here thanks.
Got a Touch recently at a discounted price due to inconvenience...

Part of a set of 2 units sent out, my box had been resealed...the
circular tape which seals the box was double layered (there was one
bit of tape on top of the other) and the packaging inside was SLIGHTLY
more handled than you would expect from a brand new straight from the
factory purchase.

The unit itself was covered in the cellophane protective sheet and
looked untouched, and all the accessories were there in sealed bags,
looking as you would expect.

BUT..
The box, despite the very good job at putting it back together as
new, had TWO layers of tape on the flap..and I was very careful peelin
the top layer off which revealed a CUT layer underneath.

So my question is I guess, WHY would this have been sent out as
new..?

Is it a case of a particular batch being sent out to meet the
discounted orders..?

Personally I bought a brand new Touch, I don't want a used one.
What's Logitech's position on this as I'm not 100% happy, and I want to
be.

The thought will always be there that my unit is perhaps second hand
in some way..

Thanks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] A few questions before buying the Touch

2010-05-02 Thread crimscrem

There was talk earlier in this thread about large collections and how
they perform on the Touch. What is considered to be a large
collection? I have about 23,000 songs (600 GB) on an external HD
connected via USB to the Touch. It'll take at least 40 seconds to get
a song selected to play. Once it plays, there are no problems as it
moves through the album. If I try to select a song from a different
album, while a song is playing, then it either slows down and I get a
message saying the Touch is trying to connect to the USB or it pulls up
the album after about 40 seconds or so. I have no idea why this is
happening. The scan was completed without any interruptions.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Rescan SBS from Touch Interface

2010-05-02 Thread crimscrem

I think you can do this one of a few ways.

1. Factor reset through the Touch menu. First, properly eject the
USB. Then, go Settings --- Advance --- Restore Factory Settings.
Once it boots up again, then attached the drive.

2. Do the same as above, but after ejecting the USB, then hit the
factory reset button above the power plug in.

3. And option, this is what I think you're going for: Settings ---
Advance --- Squeezebox Server --- Stop Squeezebox Server. then go
back through the same way and start the Squeezebox Server. It'll give
you a Wipe and Rescan option.

for it to connect after a wait. Hugely frustrating.

I have about 600 GB of music on it. I don't think this is too big of a
collection for the Touch to handle. All music is FLAC.

I don't think it's the HD either. It's newer than the Touch.

Once I pull up an album (about 40 seconds when working well), it play
songs through the album very well. But if I try to change it to
another song on a different album, I run into problems and delays.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Rescan SBS from Touch Interface

2010-05-02 Thread Mnyb

But that's only the internal server ! the classic players had an menu
option to trigger a scan on an external server.

This is not replicated on to the Touch, yet another SB3 function that
did not migrate to the Touch (it's replacement).

But, this was raised as an enhancement request for the duet or more
precise the controller , but was then turned down as wontfix in
bugzilla .
No real motivation to why.

And why deliberately keep UI inconsistencies between players ?

Transporter SB3/2 and Boom can trigger a scan on the server but not
radio,controller and Touch.

So either remove it from the old players or add it to the new players.

But this will be less off a problem when the autoscan is working
properly for 7.6 then you just drop in new files and a moment later
they are scanned.

Touch's inbuilt server can play Internet Radio and Music Services just
fine, without needing to switch it to MySB.com.
You should not need to shut down the inbuilt server for such playback.

My guess is that your Touch is having basic issues connecting to (and
staying connected to) your network.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)

2010-05-02 Thread JohnSwenson

Thanks, that helps.

At this point it looks like there are two possibilities, either
connectivity issues (WiFi interference) or flac decompression issues.

The easiest thing to test now is go to streaming PCM rather than flac.
If its a flac decoding issue that should clear it up. If its a WiFi
issue it might get worse.

Many people have wifi interference issues even though they have a
strong signal. The strong signal does not preclude interference, it
just makes it less likely.

If its a WiFi issue you night have to go wired to the server.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Does touch support NTP? How do you set the time!?

2010-05-02 Thread aubuti

Unlike most of the IP3K-based SBs (SB/SB2/SB3/Classic/TP/Receiver), the
Touch has an internal clock. So it will set the clock from mysb.com
(or, I think, from a regular SBS on the local network), and keep time
from there. After that it resyncs at intervals, provided a time server
is available either via the local server or direct to mysb.com.

I've had no problems with the Touch keeping time, unlike the Radio
which for a while wasn't re-sync'ing with the server, and was losing ~1
minute/week on its internal clock.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)

 John S.

Is this the correct way to go to PCM streaming?

Server settings - Advanced - File types

Code:

  File Format Stream Format Decoder

  FLACFLACDisabled
  MP3 flac/lame
  PCM flac

I did this but it seems to be down-converting. Via iPeng More Info,
it says file format FLAC, bitrate 2725kbps VBR (Converted to 1411.3kpbs
ABR).

Its definitely NOT downsampling. Yes you did it right. So if that fixes
it, are you working well now?

Ooops,
one other thing, you should have the MP3 disabled in that list just to
make sure it doesn't decide to send MP3 instead of PCM.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-02 Thread agentsmith

In the old SB2 there is an option on the remote to change text size.

How would I do that on the Touch? The text size is too small given the
multiple lines and small size of the screen.

There is no such option with the Touch. There's a fairly long list of
capabilities that the SB2, SB3 and Transporter had that the Touch does
not.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-02 Thread agentsmith

Hm

This kind of rules it out as a coach remote controlled device. I have
good eyes but to read artists/albums 12 ft away at that point size is
not realistic.

I thought Logitech is a much more experienced consumer goods company,
haven't they done ergonomics testings? Haven't they tried it from a
living room environment themselves?

That was almost the killer function for the SB2, which could have super
size text on the screen that is clearly displayed and controlled from
across the room.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-02 Thread JohnSwenson

There are two skins, the Touch and the Remote. The Touch is used when
you actually touch the screen, it has text and buttons. The text is the
smaller size. The Remote skin is activated when you use the IR remote,
it has larger text but no buttons.

The text on the Remote skin is smaller than the largest text on the
SB3.

There are a couple things you can do about this:
1) get a remote with a local screen so you don't have to look across
the room. A very popular one is an iPod Touch running the iPeng app,
this shows the information right on the remote. There are also remote
apps available for many other devices with local screens such as PDAs
or Phones with Windows Mobile or Android phones.

2) use custom clock applet to make yourself a now playing screensaver
that has LARGE text. Of course as you get larger text there is less you
can show on the screen at once, so you will probably have to forgo cover
art, and just have text. If the text is really large you probably will
either have to do a lot of scrolling or wrap the text.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-02 Thread agentsmith

Thanks John.

I do use iPeng from my iPhone. But my habit is I fall back to the LCD
screen, there is something about Laid back music surfing from the
coach, it is just more relaxing.

I am not sure if I fully comprehend how the 2 different skins
activates, are they supposed to change mode automatically depending on
my access method?

I will try tonight when I get home.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Using touch with RipNas

Your setup would be possible if the RipNAS is capable of running SBS.
The built-in SBS on the Touch will only serve directly attched USB
devices and SD cards.
