Ahh that will be the WHS console. It does behave as you describe but
(to my knowledge) only for Windows updates, not updates to plugins such
as Squeezebox server. It would be nice if it did though.

It does. At least it should. If you're on 7.5.0, then you might see it in a few

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Duet + dacmagic or Touch

2010-06-14 Thread enestu

Hi,
A rapid test between my SB Touch and my CA 640V2 CD player (CD ripped
with EAC to flac and test by switching CD/Touch source) . The CA 640 v2
is the clear winner, better definition, accuracy...

SB touch should be better than duet with theoretically a better DAC,
powerfull cpu (better to decode hd stream) (and probably handier you
can even use android or iphone as remote). I think that dac magic (or
better dac) should give better result. One of the problem for duet or
touch is the power unit and probably analog circuitry (audiophile grade
?!).

Sorry for my english :)

Did you do volume levelling on the SB and CDP? If not then the louder
player will always sound better. You need to level the volumes from the
SB and CDP first (ideally with a sound pressure level meter) to get a
meaningful comparison, even for a rapid test.

Also, you seem to suggest that one of the Touch's advantages over the
Duet is that you can use android or iPhone as a remote. Actually you
can use an Android phone or iPhone (or iPod Touch) as a remote control
for the Duet as well. Or did you mean that Android/iPhone was an
advantage for _any_ SB compared to a CDP?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Checking Plugin Compatibility with Touch

2010-06-14 Thread Apesbrain

@peterw, can you provide a little more detail on the import process you
mention? Would I save that line of code as a txt file, e.g.
EnableStatusFirst.txt and then import it somewhere in the Settings
interface in SBS?  Also, would {plugin.StatusFirst::disabled:1}
accomplish the opposite?

@ralphpny, search on the Radio does seem easier/faster than the stock
search on the Classic, but I think I'm going to miss LazySearch!

@erland, thanks for the heads up. I run a dedicated server, but I am
curious about using the USB or SD slot at the same time. If I plug in
one of these devices, does it cause TinySC to take over or simply show
up as an additional music source under the control of SBS?

Thanks again if you reply.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Duet + dacmagic or Touch

 Hello,
I posted this inquiry in the audiophile section, didn't get any
comments on it. Maybe I'll try my luck in this forum. Perhaps somebody
in this forum might want to share their comments about it.
 Here it is:
I have a decent stereo system that I hook up the squeezebox duet to.
What would you guys suggest to improve the sonics, pairing my duet with
a dacmagic or getting the squeezebox touch and replacing the duet with
 it?
with the later option I will move/hook up the duet receiver in my
 garage.

I have two Duets - one stock and one heavily modded (see the DIY
section for details).

Based on the Duet circuit, your results will vary with what you plan to
do. By this I mean:

1. If you use the analog outs of the Duet or Touch, the Touch is better
for reasons of DAC chip quality, power supply and clock layout. My guess
is a heavily modded Duet analog out will not match the Touch.

2. If you go digital out then it will depend on your DAC. Based on what
I know of the stock Duet circuitry, plus the results of folks with
serious test gear the SPDIF stream from the Touch is cleaner than the
Duet's. If your DAC is immune to input noise then the Duet will be
fine. If not the Touch will sound better.

3. Your Duet remote works fine with the Touch if that's an issue.

FWIW, I've run my stock Duet with a RAKK Dac rev.1 vs. my modded Duet's
analog outs (output levels matched) and the RAKK sounded a little better
in the bass and mids. But not enough for me to invest in the RAKK. I
have not A/B'ed a Touch against my modded Duet but my guess is the
Touch is better out of the box on analog out.

John Swenson has posted a few mods for the Touch that he says will
improve the Touch's analog out significantly. I intend to upgrade to a
Touch and mod the analog outs.

Oh and...

4. If you ever want to play higher rez music the Touch is your only
path.

I hope something in this blather is helpful!

The semi-graphical method of finding music on the Touch works great if
one has the Touch located so that the screen is within easy reach. I'm
able to find most items in my library fairly quickly by using a
combination of the remote and the touch screen. Now if the Touch's
screen is not with easy and one has a large music library I would think
that Lazy Search would be faster.

I would rank the speed and convenience of the various search methods
available as follows:

1 - Lazy Search
2 - Web interface (but one needs a computer in the listening area)
3 - Touch remote/screen combination
4 - Controller
5 - Squeezebox/Transporter remote without Lazy Search

The USB/SD slot only show up as a source on the Touch. Here's a copy of
the relevant section from the Touch Features guide:

 Squeezebox Touch Features Guide

Play Music from an SD card or USB Drive

To play your personal music collection from an SD card or USB drive:

1 Plug a USB drive into the connector on the back of Squeezebox Touch,
or insert your SD card into the slot on the right side of your
 Squeezebox

2 Wait while the new device is installed on your Squeezebox. You will
see the messages “Attaching device” followed by “Starting Squeezebox
Server” When those processes are complete, an IMPORTANT NOTICE screen
will inform you of the Eject option

3 Tap the left arrow on your touchscreen to return to the Home menu

4 From the Home menu, go to My Music Switch Library and select your
 device

5 Wait while you see the message “Connecting to device-name ”

6 At the My Music Artists, Albums menu, navigate to and select the
 music you want to hear

From the My Music menu, access your music collection by artist, album,
or genre Or select new music, saved playlists; or a random mix of your
songs, albums, or artists You can even use My Music Search to find a
specific selection by artist, album, song, playlist, or recent
 searches

Note: Only the media that has been attached first will be available
For example, if you insert an SD card and then attach a USB drive, only
the SD card will be listed as an option when you go to My Music Switch
 Library .
Note: Squeezebox Touch will access music on SD Cards and USB drives It
does not support other attachable USB devices (for example, iPhones or
other cellular phones, iPods, PDAs, Cameras, and so forth)

Note: To ensure proper operation of a USB drive with Squeezebox Touch:

 * If your USB drive has an AC power connection, plug it in

 * If your USB drive does not connect to an AC power supply, plug it
into an AC powered USB hub

Note: The maximum supported SD card size 32GB

If the music that you want is not accessible through My Music:
 * Go to My Music Music Folder and point Squeezebox Touch to the
appropriate folder on your SD card or USB drive

 To eject an attached device:
1 From the Home menu, select Eject Device

2 Remove the device from your Squeezebox Touch

I agree that searching on the Touch with just the IR remote is really
cumbersome and one really to use the combination of the remote and the

I don't have an iPhone or iTouch so I have never had the chance to use
your iPeng plugin, which if what I've read here on the forums is true,
is quite a first rate plugin.

Another third party plugin (plugin is in quotes because it's really
not a true plugin) which belongs somewhere around 1 or 2 is Moose. Like
the web ui it requires that one have a computer on hand but it is much,
much faster than the web ui and quite a bit more flexible. I haven't
been using Moose as much as I used to since I've gotten a Touch which,
like Moose or the web iu, provides a nice graphic interface. Hey after
painstakingly scanning all those CD covers it's nice to be able to see

No, I'm not using an external DAC, just the RCA analogue outputs to my

Re. the sample rate, the 'source' change was from a 128kb/s AAC+
internet radio stream to 24b/88.2kHz FLAC.

It's a bit more than a faint tick, rather a couple of 'impulses', as if
the 'switch' were a bit bouncy, or as though someone were slightly
cack-handedly inserting a 'live' plug into an input with the volume
turned up (though it's not a 'buzz').

Having said all that, it's not actually that bad; it's not really loud
or disruptive. However, it is something I'd rather not have, and not
what I'd expect. I'll wait to see if the bug fix, er, fixes it.

Aha, yes there is a click on the analog outs when changing sample rates.
The intensity seems to be constant, so if you run the volume at full and
run into a preamp the clicks are barely audible. BUT if you run directly
into a high gain amp and have the Touch volume set low, the clicks are
quite loud. I'll check and see if there is already a bug on this, if

How do have to configure the Ipod Touch???

Does the Squeezebox Touch have to be connected to the Internet?

I would love to do this:

Put an external harddisk in the Squeezebox Touch, sit on the couch and
control the playing of the music with my Ipod Touch...

Can anyone please help?

You will just need to setup iPeng to work with your wireless network.
Follow the guide in iPeng so it sees your wireless network then pick
the Touch from the available Squeezebox devices. iPeng is a great
companion for use with Squeezebox. There is also an iPeng ' thread '

2010-06-14 Thread JohnSwenson

The SB Touch cannot talk directly to the iTouch. You need a wireless
access point in the picture somewhere. The access point doesn't have to
be connected to the internet but it does have to be there. It sets up
the wireless infrastructure that both Touches connect to.

The access point is where you setup the wirless network parameters such
ssid (name) security method (WEP or WPA) and the security key.

The access point can be a wireless router or just an access point. You
can have it connected to the internet or not. Certain things work
better if the Touch can get to the internet but its not required.

Is the HD already connected to the SB touch? If not, the server on the

You can select the music source (touch with it's HD or MySB) in iPen if

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch sound quality---all thing being equal

2010-06-14 Thread mmduf

Suppose I was considering a Touch...but I'm happy with my Classic SB.
But all things being equal, no other changes being made in my setup,
would I notice improved sound quality with the Touch?

How good is the rest of your stereo?
How picky are you about audio quality?
Do you consider yourself to be an audiophile?
Is $300 a lot of money to you? or just a fine amount to spend on a hobby
gadget?

Good questions, all. Just asking if I would notice an obvious
improvement in sound. Not an audiophile, but I like the sound of my
stereo. I guess I'm trying to justify it, because I'm intrigued by the
other features of the Touch, but in the end it's all about the sound,
right?

So does anyone think there's a noticeable improvement in sound since
upgrading to the Touch?

There are people that notice a huge difference and there are people
like myself that barely would be able to hear the difference in a bind
test. It all depends on what other equipment you have and how good your
ears are.

Let's assume we are only talking about the audio quality and not the
other features which also makes it worth to upgrade. In this case there
might be other parts of you system where $300 would make a bigger
difference in the audio quality, it all depends on what equipment and
speakers you currently have. If the Classic is the weak link today, the
Touch will probably be a good investment to improve the audio quality.
If there are other parts in your system that are the weak links, the
Touch might not make a big difference regarding the audio quality. If
you let us know a bit more about your current system we might be able
to give you a better recommendation.

IMHO, the Touch is worth the money not only for the audio quality but
also for the color screen. In my setup the screen has enhanced the
experience a lot more than the difference in audio quality. Of course,
most things showed on my screen are third party stuff, without the
third party stuff the difference would be less.

I don't think so at all. The Touch UI is great, if its within arm reach.
I really like it. I've been a happy SlimThing user for years and years,
and have lots of them. I really like the UI on the touch.

I have never liked the remote controls that come with SqueezeBoxes, or
my Transporter. The Controller (half of the Duet) is interesting, but I
don't love it. I usually control my music with the web front end, using
a laptop. The Touch's UI is so good, I don't have to use the laptop. But
only, of course, if you can actually reach it.
