2010-07-07 Thread obraendl

Hi

I have a Touch and an 32GByte SD card with ext3 Filesystem and i see
all Directorys and Files. Now i try to mount my Music located on a NAS
Server. With fedora Linux V13 it works without Problems. When i try to
mount the same NAS Directory to the Touch /Public Directory i get an
I/O Error. The Command are:
mount -t nfs -o ro pub-nas01:/nfs/Public /media/mmcblk0p1/Public

The SD Card was created with the Command mkfs.ext /dev/sdf1 on a
Dreambox DM8000 Device.

Thanks for Help

I too have a Touch and a SB3, and I also want to tho the same thing -
use Touch with external HDD as a server and have my old SB3 accessing
music from the HDD and playing it in my bedroom.

I think that I've read somewhere that it is possible, but I do not now
how to do it!

I can't find the detailed explanation.
There is nothing in Touch's user manual or documentation.

Is there any detailed, step by step guide how to do it?

.

Attach USB drive to Touch, start the Touch's internal SBS server.
>From the SB3 you simply connect to Touch as a server, same as when you
connect SB3 to your computer and/or MySB.com
Press & hold SB3 back arrow, enter setup, scroll to "connect to Touch",
arrow right.
You are now connected to your Touch and have full access to your HD
music from BOTH SB3 and Touch, independently. :)

Try rebooting the router (unplugging it) and your computer (if running
SBS on a computer).
I think MySB.com was having some issues yesterday, there are a few
posts about intermittent issues with streams.

Some USB flash drives are just simply incompatible with Touch.
Another forum member suggested running the Error Correction utility on

I wouldn't pay more than £10, it's just a piece of plastic isn't it?

That you need it and it has to be expensive enough for someone to make
it worthwhile making and distributing it.

Doesn't really help you if you say "it's just cheap plastic" if in the
end you can't get one when you need it.

Hmmm... I hoped that it would be that simple! :)

Unfortunately, in my case it is not. :(

My SB3 was previously connected to my PC with wired ethernet
connection.

Now I did a factory reset on it.

When i power it up, first I have to setup networking.
I have a choice to connect it with wired ethernet or wireless
connection.

I chose wireless since I want it to connect to my Touch.

Touch is turned on, its internal server is running (and already playing
some music from a 8GB SD card)

Then on my SB3 I'm asked to choose region.
I chose Europe, since I live in Europe.

Next option is:
"Choose your wireless network (SSID):"

Here, I can see varius neighbours wireless networks, but I don't see my
Touch
I also have the option "enter a network name".

I tried to enter "Touch",
then i typed "SqueezeboxTouch" since I found this in Touh's menu,
Squeezeserver information section, under "hostname".

After this I got the "choose encryption" message.

I choose "none", since I did not set any encryption on my Touch (I
never connected it to any wireless network since I bought it).

Next I pressed many times the right arrow, trying to connect with
various Touch network names, but nothing happened - I only get the
message "cannot find the wireless network, Left to back, right to try
again"

What I'm doing wrong?

Do I have to set something else on my Touch?

On Touch, under "Advanced settings" I have "networking", there I can
choose type of network.
When I choose "wireless", I only get the same list of neighbours
networks.
There is no option to setup anything.

Why didn't Logitech explain this setup procedure somewhere?

Please help!

.

Your Touch is not a wireless network. That's why you don't see it in the
list of networks along with your neighbors' networks. Do you have a home
network with a wireless router? You need to connect both the Touch and
the SB3 to your home router, either wirelessly or via wired ethernet.
The Touch and SB3 can't connect directly to each other.

Pippin, do you have any photos? I once thought I would wall mount my

especially remembering that I do tend to move things around from time

Not yet. The installation if not yet done. The bathroom I want to put
it in needs a complete makeover so the wall (or door) I'm putting it in
is not yet there.

I'll do photos when I'm done.

No I unfortunately do not have a wireless router. :(

I can't find where on Logitech site I've read about Touch's ability to
act as a server for other SB products.

I got the impression that it can be done directly without external
router.

It seemed logical and possible, since it has wireless antenna, embedded
server and everything...
>From end users point of wiew (who knows very little about servers,
unix, networking, etc.) there should be no need for external router.

After all, Touch is some kind of a lifestyle audio device. You should
not be a computer networking expert to set it up in some more advanced
configurations.
The user manual is very uninformative.

It seems that Logitech is sometimes very vague when describing
possibilities of their products.

When I bought my Touch i was not aware of various issues when
connecting USB devices. :)

The Touch _can_ act as a server for other SBs. It works quite well. But
it is not a router. An embedded music server has absolutely nothing to
do with managing network traffic, handing out IP addresses, serving as
a wireless access point, etc.

The SB line are "network music players." The system requirements don't
say you need to have a home network because technically speaking you
don't, but the expectation is that most users of NMPs will have a home
network.

Do you not have a home network at all, even a wired router?

Follow the instructions of the router manufacturer and your computer
operating system to setup the home network and connect your computer(s)
to it. Even if it's a wireless router, use wired ethernet connections
whenever possible because they are more reliable, less subject to
interference from your neighbors' networks, cordless phones,
microwaves, and so forth.

Your computer, your SB3, and your Touch will all connect to the network
as separate devices. Believe me, connecting them to the router is more
straightforward than whatever way you had your computer and SB3
connected directly to each other.

You don't need to install a new SBS on your computer, but you should be
aware that the Touch's built-in server has more limited functionality
than SBS running on a PC. In particular, the Touch's built-in server
(TinySBS) cannot be controlled by SBS's web interface and cannot
transcode. TinySBS cannot run server-based plugins, but it can run a
number of applets. These limitations may not matter to you, and if they
don't, then TinySBS may serve you well.

If you do plan to use SBS on your pc from time to time it's a good idea
to make sure that it's the same version as TinySBS running on the Touch.

When I bought Touch, I didn't know this and what was needed for
everything to work.

I think that all this should be in the manual and in the product
description.

I'm not a network expert, but I'm not computer illiterate.
I have custom built, setup and I maintain my 4 PCs (I'm a photographer
and a graphic designer and I depend on my computers).

I can only imagine how it can be for some less experienced PC users.

Logitech documentation is severely lacking.

Yes I do have a (some sort of) home network.

But no router! :)

My home network consists of my laptop and my graphic workstation that,
when needed, are connected directly via "cross" ethernet cable.

My "Internet" mini PC is connected to my cable modem via USB.

My SB Touch is connected directly to my cable modem via second "cross"
ethernet cable.

My SB3 is connected directly to my "Internet" PC via third "cross"
ethernet cable.

I always wanted to separate my workstations from hazards of the
Internet, so I never needed a router that would connect together all my
PCs.

So yes, there are users of "network music players" who are not using
routers.
The need for a router should be stated in system requirements when
mentioning other Touch's connecting possibilities.

Logitech should not expect that I already have a router.

And worse, this setup scenario is not even mentioned in user manual,
let alone explained.

.

You could connect the computers together via a router without exposing
them to the internet. And with basic router technology and firewall
software it is easy to expose them to the internet without a lot of
risk. Probably with a lot less risk than your current setup of having
your "internet pc" connected directly to your modem, where it is very
exposed unless you've done something special to use a private IP
address instead of the public IP address it gets from the cable modem.

After seeing your details I concede that it may well be possible to
work the Touch into your setup without a router, but it would have to
be wired, not wireless. And you'd probably have to set up one of your
PCs as a go-between. But a router would be a lot easier. And probably
more secure as well. Decent consumer wireless routers are available for
around US$50, so that would be my advice.

Network can mean a number of different setups. Your current network is
daisy-chained computers & devices via cross-over cables.
The more common and simpler network is a single router that all devices
connect to.
Then others will have hubs & switches off of the router for other
connections.
Some ISP's provide the router (even WiFi routers), while others do
not.

Point being, it is not easy to describe every possible "network"
configuration scenario on a small retail box.
Being a network device they assume you have a network, just as they
assume you already have music (also not included in the box). ;)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] conection reset by remote host!!!

2010-07-07 Thread toby10

NAS devices have been known to have DNS errors, might try the 3rd
party/NAS forum here for more info.
Maybe just close SBS and restart SBS may resolve it.
If switching from computer SBS to MySB do you still get the error? Or
just when switching fron NAS to MySB?

I don't know if the same diagnostics are on NAS SBS, but on the
computer SBS click on the Diagnostics tab to see if all ports are OK
for internet use.
If they are not OK then something is preventing your NAS from seeing
the internet.

If one isn't going to put a hole in the wall, instead of Velcro, why
not just put a stylish shelf on the wall to set it on. With Velcro, the
wires are still all exposed so why not just a shelf. The whole idea in
my mind for even wall mounting the Touch is for a clean install with
all wiring hidden in the walls.

And somebody said something about it just being cheap plastic, what
about the Mold Dye that has to be made and the minimum run of units?
There are many more costs then just the small amount of plastic
involved with the wall mount itself. My biggest issue was with the
proposed MSRP of $99 when we got word they were looking at selling one.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch in a car

2010-07-07 Thread Waldo Pepper

I have been thinking about this and as long as you use a FLASH drive and
have RCA inputs on your in car system then there is no problem.

You could also update the music collection via wiFi when parked on your
drive.

Caveats...

1. A HD drive may smash the heads into the platters going over bumps
unless properly mounted.

2. The device runs off 5V so will have to be regulated down.

3. Check the standby current when off. It could flatten your battery if
not driven. I have not measured it, but 3.6W in standby (posted here
elsewhere) will completely flatten a 50Ah car battery in a week (and
stuff your car battery in the process). It will not fully recover from
a deep discharge. If your music collection is small, then you could
turn off completly as a power on rescan should be quickish.

Think more outside of the box. I use a 12V to 5V 4Amp DC/DC power
supply that is wired to a switched hot IE key must be in the Start/On
position for the Touch to draw power. No battery draw unless driving. I
have had no issues using Toshiba USB powered USB Drives. Probably
because they are portables and designed to take some knocking around as
well as sitting on a small piece of memory foam in the lower cubby hole.
And even if you don't have Aux In on your head unit, some factory units
can have an adapter added to get the signal in though I highly
recommend after market head units with Aux In.

Or one can just use a small Inverter to power Touch via the OEM PS and
then even use external powered USB drive since one has the inverter to
plug it into.

Could you update over WiFi, I guess so, but why bother. Its a USB
drive, bring it in and do a direct update over a USB Cable.

Diagnostics

What are the results for:
IP: Address, Subnet, Gateway
DNS
MySB IP
Ping
TCP ports 3483 and 9000
MySB Registration status

Don't bother creating new MySB accounts, that's not the problem (and
could possibly cause more problems). ;)

DNS via NAS is just a guess. But if it works fine on your computer yet
does not work on NAS then the NAS is an issue.
Whether this is the whole problem I cannot say.

Another thing to try:
unplug Touch
unplug router
plug router back in (wait till it completely reboots)
plug Touch back in
try MySB again

1. Sorry if this is a stupid one but what is the "KK1 SK104"?

to snag a handfull in the TO-3P package at about half that from a

ok so i dont know what did it cause i did a couple of things, i updated
my freenas version from 7.5.0 to 7.5.1 uninstalled and reinstalled the

already initiated, when the sbtouch booted it said something about some
wrong configurations and that i needed to restore to factory, i did so
and the msb.com now works independently without having to switch to sbs
on my pc, im only left to fix my nas, when i change to my nas library it
says:
A mysqueezebox.com account is required for this service. Please access
Squeezebox Server Settings -> mysqueezebox.com with a web browser to
configure.

thanks for all your help toby, i was concerned it was some hardware
defect but it must of been some software or configuration thing going
on, im just baffled of how it happened with no apparent reason and its
pretty much taken me all day to figure out and im not even sure what
was the cause, any ideas on my last problem?

[SlimDevices: Touch] SB Touch Initial Setup - Firmware

2010-07-07 Thread woodnut

Hello,

A friend just bought an SB Tocu after my glowing review but is having
real dificulties getting it to connect to mysqueezebox.com to get the
firmware to even get the thing up and running.

His laptop is connected to the internet via a mobile internet dongle.
Should it still work with an ethernet cable plugged from the laptop to
the SB Touch?

I did see a post somewhere saying there was a way around this if you
didn't have a network but I cannot find it at the moment. Is it
possible to get around this without the SB Touch connecting to the
internet?

Could the files be downloaded onto the laptop and transferred? I'm
guessing that may be a bit tricky even if it is possible.

Many thanks

That's correct, because you can't run plugins if you're using the SB
Touch's built-in server (TinySBS). You can't run plugins on
mysqueezebox.com either. You can only run plugins on a computer or NAS
running SBS.

However, you can run applets on the SB Touch, so that's what you should
be looking for. It's been a while since I've installed any new applets,
but look in the Touch's menu under Settings > Advanced. To get the full
range of choices you will need to enable 3rd party applets.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SB Touch Initial Setup - Firmware

2010-07-07 Thread garym

If I understand, the laptop is connected via some sort of 3G network
(not WIFI or local ethernet). Does he plan on using the TOUCH with only
local music files (i.e., NOT any internet radio, pandora, etc.)? I'm not
aware of any way to get the firmware on indirectly (I'm sure there is
some highly technical way, via ssh'ing in to the TOUCH and changing
certain files, but this would not be very straightforward for most
folks).

I suspect the best way to get the firmware installed is to take the
touch to someone's house that does have WIFI, and setup the touch
initially to use that WIFI network. then the firmware will install,
etc. Then the TOUCH can be setup at the owner's location with an
attached USB drive. But again, without the ability to access the
internet and/or be attached to a local network, I'm not sure why the
TOUCH was a good answer for this person. A large capacity ipod attached
to his stereo would be simpler!

You can update the firmware via USB flash drive or SD memory card.
Download the firmware from
http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.5.1/. You want the file
fab4_7.5.1_r8837.bin. Put it in the root directory of the USB stick or

probably need to use the Touch's menu to start the upgrade (Settings >

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes I did suggest that the only way would be to take it somewhere where
there is WIFI to get the firmware.

The intention is to use the SB Touch connected by ethernet cable to the
laptop which has the music on it.

Yes it would be a shame to not be able to access the internet radio but
it will still represent better sound quality than an ipod plus much
larger capacity.

thanks.

1: thats just the identifier for the heatsink. It was called SK104 in
the heatsink library. I wanted to make sure the heatsink showed up in
the schematic since it would burn up without it.

2: I never built a board for these, I just build them on terminal
strips screwed into plywood. Really hi-tech! Perfboard would be fine.

This seems like a project tailor made for a CNC milling center. It could
be made from either aluminum or some form of plastic. No need for molds,
dies etc. Since we are not talking about gazillions of these the fairly
slow throughput of a CNC milling machine would be fine. No overhead
other than the design. Put a chunk of plastic or aluminum in the
machine and let it go.

Thanks for the snappy reply John. Assumed it was something like that
since all the components on the schematic were accounted for. However
I found the part directly based on the 'Aavid PN'
with no mention of that reference.

Don't know if you ever get asked for help/advice on component sourcing
for this but I built a Mouser spreadsheet for the BoM. Shoot me a PM
with your email address if you'd like me to send it to you.

Sorry to pester you, but did you see the link I posted on the last page.
I would value your view on whether that might work for those of us too
dumb/ lazy to make our own and too mean to pay for a 250 quid job

Question: How much would you be willing to pay for a Touch Wall Mounting
Bracket?

- $24.95
- $25 to 49.99
- $50 to $75.00
- I don't need one so not at any price!

And the 'Cupcake CNC'
that Pat mentioned looks about right. It handles plastic patterns up to
4"x4"x6", which is just about right (4" isn't tall enough, but 4" *
2^(0.5) would do fine). I don't know if Cupcake CNC can work with
really nice plastics, though. Frankly I think you might do better
building a wooden box with a scroll saw and some glue.

The cupcake can use a number of plastics. You can do amazing stuff with
one. Using it only makes sense if you need some small number of them.
For one, clearly make it out of wood.

For 20 to 50, a cupcake would be fine.

I'm not sure that the standard Cupcake can handle the length, it might.
There are also folk who expanded the bay so they can make longer stuff.
Its all open source, anyone can change it in any way.

I know several of the folks who run makerbot, known from a group of geek
in Brooklyn. I don't know anyone who has one :-) but I have been tempted.

Carpenters have been doing cool stuff with wood for thousands of years.
Its idea for custom work.
