Itunes might have D:\music\xx\xx\xx.mp3. Squeezebox server would find
that via the itunes integration.

You may have the server pointed to \\MYPC\Music\ and in your case
D:\Music and \\MYPC\Music may be the same folder. But the server would
find the file named: \\MYPC\Music\music\xx\xx\xx.mp3. It wouldn't know
that this is in fact the same file.

You may also have the same issue with playlists containing such
pointers to different files which would then be included in the
scan.

I would suggest browsing via the web interface to the song in question
and see what the file is pointing too in each case. This should give
you a clue if the above is the problem.

The issue has come up in a couple of forums and it seems there is some

The Transporter got an A rating. Having used both in my home system I
find the difference between the two relatively small even without taking
the price difference into account. I would have thought a class B or
at least a C rating would have been appropriate.

Is the Touch just too cheap and small to rate higher? It seems an issue
 worth discussing.

The Transporter LOOKS like an expensive audio component and COSTS like
one. The Touch looks like a kid's video game and costs less than the
cable that connects it to the amp.

If they sounded alike, Stereophile would have to close shop and go
home. So they can't sound alike.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Wireless vs Ethernet. Any sound quality differences?

2010-09-16 Thread Steve W

My SB Touch feeds a DAC by digital coaxial and then onto my amp. I'm
keen to get the best sound quality possible. Should I expect there to
be any difference in sound quality between the wireless connection and
a physical ethernet connection? I don't really like the idea of
wireless connection for HD music files (up to 24bit, 96kHz) but I am
having trouble with occasional drop outs on the ethernet connection
(looses sight of the ports momentarily) whilst the wireless shows no
such issue. Can I go wireless and be confident that sound quality will
not suffer?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I give up! SB Touch External HD Nightmare

2010-09-16 Thread Tony T

I found the TinySC acceptable and, for the most part, worked quite well.
That said, I switched to a dedicated server (a Mac Mini) as I did not
like the re-buffering that I would get on the 1st song in a random mix
(and as a headless server, it has other uses, such as a print server and
backup server). Now, this 1st song re-buffering was a very minor
annoyance (and might even be fixed by now), but I tend to be a bit of a
perfectionist (I recently tagged all my Flac's with an ALBUMSORT equal
to release date as I was annoyed that I could not view Albums by year
when viewing by Artists).

Anyway, I'm very happy with the Touch.

When you copy a Word file over your Wi-Fi, does it end up corrupt?

No it doesn't ;)

The same thing is with music, Wi-Fi or Ethernet it's the same.

I also think the same but I still worry about audio quality/integrity.
I worry about small, occasional data loss that could just contribute to
jitter, poor clock timing or stereo imaging and hence degrade the audio

If that is definitely not an issue then I may as well give up on the

Remember that the Touch and earlier Squeezebox players contain a buffer
that collects the incoming data stream and then parcels it out as
needed. I once unplugged the CAT-5 cable to my SB3 and it continued to
play perfectly for 7 or 8 seconds before it stopped. That's a long time
in the world of data transmission.

Also, if you just want to be paranoid, any delay or minor interruption
in a wireless signal can be duplicated on a wired LAN that shares the
data path with other computers.

The only problem with wireless is it can be subject to interference
from other wireless devices such as 2.4 GHz cordless phones, etc. It
that's an issue you're going to notice it and it won't be subtle.
Otherwise, my opinion is that if it is working, don't worry about it
unless you're just determined to have a case of audiophilia nervosa one
way or the other.

No no no no did I say no? :-)

There is no data loss - even an audible drop out is not a loss but
rather a delay...

There's no jitter to be found here. The audio integrity etc is 100%.
Unless you get drop-outs - which means that your network is broken and
needs fixing...

2010-09-16 Thread regalma1

The Touch is a good idea badly executed - umm sounds like a typical Slim
Devices product. Maybe in a year or two or three they will have
something that does what they appear to be claiming this does now. What
is the big deal? CPU power is dirt cheap, as is memory.

If the Slim Devices folks worked for my company we would be out of
business tomorrow. We don't sell to a bunch of masochistic geeks - that
probably describes me. We sell to real users with real world needs.

Anyway, all the solutions I have read are iffy or require something
exotic. Both of which are the exact opposite of what I am trying to
achieve. If I want unstable, unpredictable performance I'll just keep
running my SB from my laptop. As I slowly figure out how to purge the
HP bloatware it is improving. But is so loud!

Here is a good question does anyone make a small (12), generic and
very quiet laptop that runs Windows? No bloatware. I can live with a
tiny SS HD just as long as I can run WiFi and a USB drive. I have a 7
netbook, but that is too small for my old eyes and even it has a fan.

I respectively have to beg to differ. I have three that work perfectly
with over 60k of files. Admittedly, I do use SbS on a server (not
tinySbS). However, my brother uses a TOUCH connected via WIFI,
tinySbS with an attached USB drive and about 50k files and it works
perfectly for him, including serving the music to his bedside BOOM,
also via WIFI. Since the day he set it up 6 months ago, It has simply
worked and he only called me recently to ask whether he should say OK
for the update screen. He did, and it updated and continued working. And
he knows nothing about how it works, how his network works, etc. He is
truly just a user.

I have every SB player except the Radio, and it seems to have some
problems, but all the other players are more rock solid over the years
than any computer I've ever owned.

I admit that people have real issues, but this idea that the TOUCH is
junk is too over the top to be taken seriously.

regalma1;576963 Wrote:

Here is a good question does anyone make a small (12), generic and

12 screen? There are a few netbooks available with 12.1 screens, but
most will have 10.1 screens. You'll want a netbook with the latest
generation of Atom N450 processor. I have an Acer 10.1 netbook that
is absolutely quiet. I'm not sure it even has a fan. You might also
consider 11.6 screens.

Here's an ASUS netbook with a 12.1 screen:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220760

The only thing I'd be concerned about is the ION video. The added chip
may push the system into requiring a fan. One nice thing about the
netbooks with 11.6 and 12.1 screens is that they don't fit the
Microsoft definition of a netbook, so they usually have 2GB of RAM
instead of 1GB, larger hard drives, and have Windows 7 Home Premium
installed instead of Windows 7 Starter. If you opt for a 10.1 netbook
you can sometimes get XP Home instead of Win 7 Starter.

 No bloatware.

Really? You can't be bothered to spend 15 minutes removing it?

I can live with a tiny SS HD just as long as I can run WiFi and a USB
drive. I have a 7 netbook, but that is too small for my old eyes and

You're not going to find too many netbooks available with an SSD (maybe
those you can custom order, such as from Dell), but you can easily put
an SSD in one if you think the 2.5 drive makes too much noise.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sb Touch Screen Problem

2010-09-16 Thread woodnut

Would anyone be so kind to comment on if it is feasible that the linear
regulated power supply could have caused the screen to go on me?

I have checked it for continuity and everything seems fine there
although I guess it would damage more than just the screen if there was
a problem with the wiring?

I have checked the voltage with a multimeter and it show 5.05 volts. I
am unsure how to check the current, would the Touch need to be running
from the power supply to measure the current draw?

The power supply has been getting warm but I have got holes in the roof
of the enclosure for ventilation. The IEC socket I fitted has a 3 amp
fuse and a switch so I have not been leaving it on when not in use as I
wasn't sure ho hot it might get when left all day.

I guess several folk might say just get rid as it is not worth using
one anyhow but it seems a shame now it is built.

Many thanks,

I've plenty of resistors and caps if you want some...

Very kind of you, thanks, but I will pass for now. I have just got my
Touch back after audioupgrades fitted the second clock (and connected
the first clock which they had actually not connected- the 44.1/88.2
was still coming from the stock oscillator.) I am not touching anything
until that has had a little while to settle in (or my ears have had the
chance to adjust to it if you prefer.)

I agree with you about the ears/brain: once you get beyond really
obvious upgrades I find it very difficult to tell. Frankly every time I
listen to music I find it slightly different. I am however coming round
to a rather startling conclusion which is that the modification of my
X-DAC has had as much of a difference on MP3s as on hi rez FLAC.

While my touch was away I played CDs through my Xray v3 cd player (I
really did buy into the X series) and I felt quite strongly that it was
not as good a transport as the touch. This is quite significant because
when it came out the X ray v3 was reviewed by Hi Fi News and praised
specifically as a transport.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wireless vs Ethernet. Any sound quality differences?

2010-09-16 Thread Dura

I think the argument about the buffer is really good.
Now for sufferers of Audiophila Nervosa using wireless there are two
possibilties:
1) wireless is Evil because it causes the wireless receptor to be
active giving pollution in the system or:
2) wireless is Good, because now that horrible poisoned RFI from the
router or server cannot reach your Squeezebix, at least not by signal
wire.

As always, the truth should be in listening, but that is sometimes
easier said then done, and the A.N. Suffers are very tight.
Me, I love 2), sounds very plausible in combination with the buffer
thing and happens to be convenient to me, since my router and PC are on
the other side of the house.

Agree with all of that. Having owned a Linn CD12 (gulp) I feel
reasonably well placed to conclude that the Touch can outperform ANY
cd-spinner as a pure transport.
And that's without spending thousands on machines to grind the edge of
the discs, zap them with ultraviolet or any other lunatic scheme to
improve the wretched discs... :-)

The X-series were genuine bargains, let down by some rather mundane
component choices.

The Audiocom full-blown mods elevate the X-DACv3 and X-10 into a
different league.
The X-PSU is just icing on the cake really - maybe 1-2% of the overall
sound?

As for modding the Touch... Personally I think the basic stock circuit
is pretty good. Not sure there is too much mileage there (especially in
my setup with the TACT ASRC) - but I'd be interested to hear your
opinions.

I agree the truth is in the listening. I defy anyone to prove - or
even claim! - that they can hear a difference bwteeen a properly
working ethernet or Wlan connection.

Curiously, if anyhting there is more of a chance of the ethernet
sounding worse due to some people stupidly using cat6 SHIELDED cable!

running a full rescan should make the artwork appear...

In my 1+ year experience with Touch it is a worthy successor to the SB3.
Admittedly, I've only run TinySBS with a small music library on a USB
stick, and for that it did just fine. But for day-to-day use it's an
excellent player connected to SBS, which is hardly iffy or exotic.

I suggest you fix that problem. There is absolutely no good reason to
be loosing sight of the ports. Either your router's bad, or the
cable's bad, or something else with your ethernet is not right. Fix
that and use the wired connection, not because it has better sound
quality, but because it is more reliable.

The original question was about a TVC - a Transformer Volume Control.
Its a transformer with multiple taps and a switch used to select the

do exist and quite a few people buy them.

My injunction was NOT to try and change anything about signal carrying
transformer, I don't see how that is a bad thing. Such transformer DO
exist, yes in tube amps (people still buy and build them) as inputs for
balanced lines and even in DACs.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I give up! SB Touch External HD Nightmare

2010-09-16 Thread nicolas75

Actually the weird thing is that I was very happy with the squeezebox
classic.
And I do think that the Touch is better than the classic in everything
the classic does, and a few other things more.
The bad point is that the internal server is expected to work well, and
that it usually doesn't, at least if you have a large library let's say
at least 150 GB of flac files.

What's weird is to be very satisfied with the Classic, having a Touch
better than the Classic in every field covered by the Classic, and
still having a bad feeling about the Touch, only because this internal
server which doesn't even exists on the Classic.

Note that I was one of those quite satisfied with the internal server
for several weeks.

But all in all, the internal server is not acceptable for most normal
users using normally large libraries.
Even is some can be fully satisfied, and even if I was one of those for
quite some time.

This is a pity because, as I said earlier, I think it would so easy to
be able to rescan only on demand, and not having to wait for at least
half an hour when you don't expect it, and want to listen to your
music.

I have both a Touch and Transporter. The Transporter has a wireless
connection and the Touch has a wired connection. When playing 24/96
files both devices will sometimes rebuffer at the beginning of playback
but then they will play fine for very long periods. As far as i can tell
there is absolutely no difference in sound quality between wired and
wireless connections.

So stop worrying and enjoy the music.

A design flaw (IMO it's a flaw) in the Squeezebox architecture is that
the buffer is only for the current track. At the start of a new track,
all the players start refilling their buffers from scratch, so the
system is more vulnerable to network trouble when a new song starts.
