ozzymilton;576747 Wrote: Does anyone have a way to delete the duplicates as mentioned in my original post above on the Sqeezeboz Touch ?? Itunes might have D:\music\xx\xx\xx.mp3. Squeezebox server would find that via the itunes integration. You may have the server pointed to \\MYPC\Music\ and in your case D:\Music and \\MYPC\Music may be the same folder. But the server would find the file named: \\MYPC\Music\music\xx\xx\xx.mp3. It wouldn't know that this is in fact the same file. You may also have the same issue with playlists containing such pointers to different files which would then be included in the scan. I would suggest browsing via the web interface to the song in question and see what the file is pointing too in each case. I would have thought a class B or at least a C rating would have been appropriate. Is the Touch just too cheap and small to rate higher? It seems an issue worth discussing. The Transporter LOOKS like an expensive audio component and COSTS like one. The Touch looks like a kid's video game and costs less than the cable that connects it to the amp. [SlimDevices: Touch] Wireless vs Ethernet. Any sound quality differences?
My SB Touch feeds a DAC by digital coaxial and then onto my amp. I'm keen to get the best sound quality possible. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I give up! SB Touch External HD Nightmare
I found the TinySC acceptable and, for the most part, worked quite well. That said, I switched to a dedicated server (a Mac Mini) as I did not like the re-buffering that I would get on the 1st song in a random mix (and as a headless server, it has other uses, such as a print server and backup server). Now, this 1st song re-buffering was a very minor annoyance (and might even be fixed by now), but I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist (I recently tagged all my Flac's with an ALBUMSORT equal to release date as I was annoyed that I could not view Albums by year when viewing by Artists). Anyway, I'm very happy with the Touch. -- Tony T Tony #63743; SBTouch #9834; SBRadio #9836; Tony T's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34544 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81784 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Remember that the Touch and earlier Squeezebox players contain a buffer that collects the incoming data stream and then parcels it out as needed. I once unplugged the CAT-5 cable to my SB3 and it continued to play perfectly for 7 or 8 seconds before it stopped. That's a long time in the world of data transmission. Also, if you just want to be paranoid, any delay or minor interruption in a wireless signal can be duplicated on a wired LAN that shares the data path with other computers. The only problem with wireless is it can be subject to interference from other wireless devices such as 2.4 GHz cordless phones, etc. It that's an issue you're going to notice it and it won't be subtle. The Touch is a good idea badly executed - umm sounds like a typical Slim Devices product. Maybe in a year or two or three they will have something that does what they appear to be claiming this does now. What is the big deal? CPU power is dirt cheap, as is memory. If the Slim Devices folks worked for my company we would be out of business tomorrow. We don't sell to a bunch of masochistic geeks - that probably describes me. We sell to real users with real world needs. Anyway, all the solutions I have read are iffy or require something exotic. Both of which are the exact opposite of what I am trying to achieve. If I want unstable, unpredictable performance I'll just keep running my SB from my laptop. As I slowly figure out how to purge the HP bloatware it is improving. But is so loud! Here is a good question does anyone make a small (12), generic and very quiet laptop that runs Windows? No bloatware. I can live with a tiny SS HD just as long as I can run WiFi and a USB drive. I have an Acer 10.1 netbook that is absolutely quiet. I'm not sure it even has a fan. You might also consider 11.6 screens. The added chip may push the system into requiring a fan. One nice thing about the netbooks with 11.6 and 12.1 screens is that they don't fit the Microsoft definition of a netbook, so they usually have 2GB of RAM instead of 1GB, larger hard drives, and have Windows 7 Home Premium installed instead of Windows 7 Starter. I have checked it for continuity and everything seems fine there although I guess it would damage more than just the screen if there was a problem with the wiring? I have checked the voltage with a multimeter and it show 5.05 volts. I am unsure how to check the current, would the Touch need to be running from the power supply to measure the current draw? The power supply has been getting warm but I have got holes in the roof of the enclosure for ventilation. The IEC socket I fitted has a 3 amp fuse and a switch so I have not been leaving it on when not in use as I wasn't sure ho hot it might get when left all day. I think the argument about the buffer is really good. Now for sufferers of Audiophila Nervosa using wireless there are two possibilties: 1) wireless is Evil because it causes the wireless receptor to be active giving pollution in the system or: 2) wireless is Good, because now that horrible poisoned RFI from the router or server cannot reach your Squeezebix, at least not by signal wire. As always, the truth should be in listening, but that is sometimes easier said then done, and the A.N. Suffers are very tight. Me, I love 2), sounds very plausible in combination with the buffer thing and happens to be convenient to me, since my router and PC are on the other side of the house. -- Dura Dura's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39937 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82026 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Am I correct in inferring from 'your earlier post' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=576507#post576507) that you haven't actually used a Touch? Iffy or exotic solutions? Get real. In my 1+ year experience with Touch it is a worthy successor to the SB3. Admittedly, I've only run TinySBS with a small music library on a USB stick, and for that it did just fine. But for day-to-day use it's an excellent player connected to SBS, which is hardly iffy or exotic. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81784 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I suggest you fix that problem. There is absolutely no good reason to be loosing sight of the ports. Either your router's bad, or the cable's bad, or something else with your ethernet is not right. Fix that and use the wired connection, not because it has better sound quality, but because it is more reliable. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82026 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Question for Audiophiles
Waldo Pepper;576817 Wrote: I have never seen a modern amp with signal transformers in their audio path. The original question was about a TVC - a Transformer Volume Control. Its a transformer with multiple taps and a switch used to select the appropriate tap. Some people like to use these as volume controls. They do exist and quite a few people buy them. My injunction was NOT to try and change anything about signal carrying transformer, I don't see how that is a bad thing. Such transformer DO exist, yes in tube amps (people still buy and build them) as inputs for balanced lines and even in DACs. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] I give up! SB Touch External HD Nightmare
Actually the weird thing is that I was very happy with the squeezebox classic. And I do think that the Touch is better than the classic in everything the classic does, and a few other things more. The bad point is that the internal server is expected to work well, and that it usually doesn't, at least if you have a large library let's say at least 150 GB of flac files. What's weird is to be very satisfied with the Classic, having a Touch better than the Classic in every field covered by the Classic, and still having a bad feeling about the Touch, only because this internal server which doesn't even exists on the Classic. Note that I was one of those quite satisfied with the internal server for several weeks. But all in all, the internal server is not acceptable for most normal users using normally large libraries. Even is some can be fully satisfied, and even if I was one of those for quite some time. This is a pity because, as I said earlier, I think it would so easy to be able to rescan only on demand, and not having to wait for at least half an hour when you don't expect it, and want to listen to your music. -- nicolas75 nicolas75's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15823 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81784 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wireless vs Ethernet. Any sound quality differences?
I have both a Touch and Transporter. The Transporter has a wireless connection and the Touch has a wired connection. When playing 24/96 files both devices will sometimes rebuffer at the beginning of playback but then they will play fine for very long periods. As far as i can tell there is absolutely no difference in sound quality between wired and wireless connections. So stop worrying and enjoy the music. -- ralphpnj Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Snatch - The Transporter - Transporter 2 (oops) - Touch 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/jazzfann/) ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82026 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

At the start of a new track, all the players start refilling their buffers from scratch, so the system is more vulnerable to network trouble when a new song starts. -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ Free plugins: 'AllQuiet' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AllQuiet.html) 'Auto Dim/AutoDisplay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AutoDisplay.html) 'BlankSaver' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/BlankSaver.html) 'ContextMenu' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/ContextMenu.html) 'DenonSerial' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/DenonSerial.html) 'FuzzyTime' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/FuzzyTime.html) 'KidsPlay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KidsPlay.html) 'KitchenTimer' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KitchenTimer.html) 'PlayLog' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PlayLog.html) 'PowerCenter/BottleRocket' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PowerCenter.html) 'SaverSwitcher' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SaverSwitcher.html) 'SettingsManager' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SettingsManager.html) 'SleepFade' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SleepFade.html) 'StatusFirst' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/StatusFirst.html) 'SyncOptions' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SyncOptions.html) 'VolumeLock' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/VolumeLock.html) peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82026 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
