Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Weird Thumbnails
Although the clean cache folder worked for the moment, the next time I added an album to my library the problem came back. It would take multiple tries of cache clean-up and clear library and rescans to get the thumbnails to display correctly on my Touch. Now remember this problem was just on my Touch not on my Controller. Today I was about to rip 5 albums into my library and was complaining about this problem when my wife said if the artwork is only wonky (thats a technical term) on the Touch, why dont you reset the Touch? I used the small button on the back to reset the Touch and now the artwork is correct even when I just rescan for new and changed music. Since this worked it suggests there is an artwork cache in the Touch and not just on the server. Does anyone know if this is correct? It also suggest my wife is smarter than me:-) -- CharlieG CharlieG's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32439 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81786 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

No, the Touch user interface isn't nearly as customizable as older Squeezeboxes. Actually, it's not really customizable at all. avous;578670 Wrote: > The V-DAC uses the PCM2706 chip in adaptive mode. Aha, the 2706 is limited to 16 bits and will only handle 44.1 and 48. The Touch outputs 24 bits from its internal stream. So in order to play anything at all the underlying ALSA plug layer has to do some conversions, at least 24 to 16 and if you play a higher rate file than 48 it will also change the sample rate. This could very well be having problems keeping up with whats going on. I'm not sure what the buffer lengths are etc. I'm surprised this is happening or 44.1 material, I would not be surprised for 96, but 44.1 should not be particularly difficult. I've done a lot of testing with both 16 and 24 bit capable USB implementations and not heard a problem. I have a bunch of 2706 DACs around the house, I'll try them out and see if I can duplicate the problem. [SlimDevices: Touch] rebuffering constantly
Hi- Started getting a constant rebuffering problem. This happens both wired and wireless with FLAC files. It doesn't happen with internet radio. I'm presently using my regular desktop also as SBS. Till yesterday it worked fine, and then the rebuffering problem started. (I have a standalone NAS PC, that is my usual server, but the PS is waiting for replacement to arrive). As a test, I loaded SBS on a netbook and pointed my Touch to that library. It worked fine, no rebuffering problem. So apparently it isn't the network/router or the Touch. I'm assuming from the this that the problem is with my desktop pressed into service as an SBS, but it is a new powerful computer with lots of RAM, odd that it suddenly can't handle streaming FLAC - it had previously worked fine continuously for several days. At the same time the wimpy netbook streaming works fine. I even loaded a beta version of 7.6 onto the desktop on the chance that the 7.51 SBS was somehow problematic, but that didn't help. Comments? Okey they have seriously downplayed the marketing re the USB port . I should have checked it out sooner. Quote from the site: " USB port and SD card slot You can access music and pictures stored on flash drives and memory cards. " Thats all it says nowadays, thats very very good move of them . The Touch costs the exact same amount the SB3 (Classic) did when it came out. And the Touch is the replacement for the SB3. The Touch is a NMP (Network Media Player). It is not a Server. It does include a feature of a Tiny stripped down version of SBS that can play songs off of USB media (mainly designed for USB Sticks friends might bring over). Is it meant to replace a PC or Server running SBS, it was not designed for that as again its only a feature not full blown SBS. With some careful planning, proper USB drive, and some understanding that TinySC is slower and can't be over taxed, it can be used for the Touch and a second Squeezebox reliably. I use the Touch daily with TinySC in the harsh environment of my vehicle and on the weekends at the cabin. Yes I was part of the Touch Beta so I have well over a year's time with TinySC. I can tell everybody its come a long way since the days when TinySC could only be launched using SSH and having to use CLI to mount the media, lines of code to do a scan, then tell it to start TinySC. One wrong command or keystroke and it was time to start over. So if one is going to use it as a full time server in a home environment where one could just as easily use an Atom DIY Music Server ($25 a year in electricity), then one needs to except that TinySC has limitations, can't use plugins, and is much slower or could crash where SBS wouldn't. It would also go a long way to follow suggestions from Touch Users that have been using TinySC successfully for some time. It is best to buy a compliant USB Standard Certified drive. If using a USB powered USB Drive, I strongly suggest buying a Toshiba USB drive. 1) Use an external powered drive or hub (some hubs do cause problems though) 2) Make sure the USB drive is a single drive (not a 1 or 2 TB using multiple drives in an enclosure) 3) Music only, make sure no other files are stored on the drive and keep the directory structure simple 4) Make sure to use less then 80% of the Formated size of the drive 5) Make sure the drive doesn't act as a CD drive when plugged into a PC 6) Make sure the drive doesn't spin down or sleep or use energy saving tools 7) Make sure album art doesn't exceed 600 by 600 or 300K file size (the smaller the better) 8) Don't use FLAC above -5 compression This is a good start to reduce problems -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Wood Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1, Vandersteen V2W Subwoofer Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Squeezebox BOOM Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82176 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch + USB harddrive = complete rubbish
I do get it ;) Have you expressed this on the official forum ? or contacted support ? Can be known issues with your combo of files drives and tags etc. I'm also writing for others benefit, logitech own sales babble does not clearly point out how weak the internal server is . I think people should now to not get "suckered" into it unknowingly . That it is small limited server not the same as the real server. All people are not tech nerds, I probably count as one , seeing the idea I got the "right" gut feeling directly "can this really work for me ?" So I'm merely pointing in a working direction : You can : 1. Return it, stop wasting time and effort on this if the local USB playback is the most vital feature you want to have in a network music player, research and get another product that does this better. Seriusly as this product does not match your needs. 2. Suffer as is tinker try a couple of other hard-drives, possibly in ext2 or ext3 format etc yadda yadda, eventually finding a way to make it work . 3. Run the server on real computer, don't step down in the NAS hole thats another set of headaches limitations and weird configurations etc, surprisingly similar to what you experience on the Touch itself (common factor weak non x86 cpu and very bare bones OS ) It has many limitations : http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Touch_as_a_Home_Music_Server http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Setting_Up_Squeezebox_Touch_Server http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Squeezebox_Touch_Server Personally I can not even consider it: I have 24/96 tracks and 24/48 players so sometimes transcoding is needed (not supported by Tiny-SC) . My Older players do not do AAC or ALAC natively (Tiny SC does not transcode) I have 4 players (1 more than recomended). 2100 albums 27000 tracks . No playlist longer than 100 tracks. SBS does not handle playlists gracefully therefore using Erlands different playlist plugins are vital (Tiny-SC does not support plugins) . (Shuffle large playlist crash the server in all versions) I Use other apps and plugins to and where is the web-UI is important. And I like to sometimes use the web-UI . The local servers web page for maintaining running and it cue up music etc, lack of web-Ui definetely kills it for me. I just know that I have files with large artwork some cue sheets etc and embedded art in all my 27000 files , wonder what the tiny-SC scanner would say ? I wouldnot have the patience to redo artwork in all my files to get the scanner to not crash in the touch So I'm just saying that for now the "just works" way of having a Touch is by also running a server. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe' Primare and Dynadio speakers, Contour 4 Contour Center, and Contour 1.3SE for the rear ch. This is actually one of the few things that _is_ easy to navigate on the Logitech site. To get to the URL that Mnyb gives simply follow: Products > Audio > Wifi Music Players > SB Touch > Support > Replacement Parts I don't know how much more straightforward it could be. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82188 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch + USB harddrive = complete rubbish
Mnyb, I'm glad you're not having any issues and, yes, I could quite easily set up a small server and probably not have a problem. It's not a particularly elegant solution though as I coughed up cash in order not to have to have an external server running. Why should I now fork out more money just to get this bloody thing working properly? You seem to be missing the point of the thread. This device is sold as being able to run without having an external server and being able to play music directly from an attacted usb drive. Quite simply, it does not do this with any semblance of reliability. That's the issue and that's why I'm seriously considering ditching the Touch in favour of something that acutally works as it's supposed to. It's a shame because the device itself is very nice and the sound quality is top notch. If it just 'worked' then it'd be a killer little device. Alas, it just doesn't 'work'. -- Trixster Trixster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=40631 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82176 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

The 2902 is one of the lower quality USB chips around. Its not THE worst but its not great. For you there is very little reason to assume the USB would be better. The server does not need to be on 24/7/365 . You don listen to music 24/7 ? let it hibernate and use WOL or turn it off completely and boot the thing with WOL "wake on lan" . I do that , push a button on one player directly when coming home , hanging off my coat rummage around with my stuff and then a couple of minutes later the server is up ? Same in the morning my boom kick start the server before the alarm, I turn it off before leaving my home so my server is only on when I'm listening ? being networked the server could naturally be anywhere in the house (not near the hifi for pete's sake fans and noisy drives etc) -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe' Primare and Dynadio speakers, Contour 4 Contour Center, and Contour 1.3SE for the rear ch. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch + USB harddrive = complete rubbish
I bought the touch for the same reason: I did not want a PC 24/24 working just to listen music. Touch was the first model with USB capability. I have 1Tb WD My book self powered with about 1000 cds (great mix of flac, mp3, aac,...). I also left my documents and photos on the drive. That point is mayble not a good idea, so my next step is to clean it and to try only with music files on the drive. However, at this time, this device is UNUSABLE, so slow to come in the list of my cds and so unstable... I rather listen to deezer at this time as I am upset to wait for the list of CDs for 2 minutes or more (when working...). My next step is to clean the drive and cross the fingers! Otherwise, what is the alternative? -> purchase a NAS, but would require a rather powerfull model, starting at 150 EUR (case only), that purchase was really not expected!!! -> make a server on a recycled "thin client", but I am not so good in IT, and may take so much time for me. But would be a cheaper solution(+- 50 EUR) -> sheevaplug: 120 EUR -> cheap NAS: some low cost buffalo, but slimserver is not officially supported. Seems to work according to some forums, but quite unsure... I agree with all of you, buyin the touch for that price, I was not expecting that! I also could read on a french forum someone using a SD card in the touch for the swap file. It seem a good idea to me, as it can make the process faster. Anyone has experience with this? Also, version 7.6 of the server is available in Beta version. This seems to be a version requiring less power to the machine, maybe will this solve the issue -> when is this going to be available? -- studkiram studkiram's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=40502 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82176 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
