[SlimDevices: Touch] Password problems - From a newbie

2010-10-05 Thread kjetilfa

I've just bought a Touch but I have not connected it to my broadband yet
due to password trouble/ misunderstandings(?)

The touch discovers my network connection but it is asking for a
password (WEP 64-bits encryption - 10 digit password) or (WEP 128-bits
encryption - 26 digit password).

The password I have is unfortunately 13 digits (all numbers).
How can I fix this problem? Do I need the password for the router?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Password problems - From a newbie

2010-10-05 Thread Skinny

My guess is that your password is in ASCII format and the Touch asks for
it in Hexadecimal format. Luckily, you don't need to be bothered with
the details.

1. Just go to www.mikezilla.com/exp0012.html

2. Enter your key in the ASCII Text field and click. The HEX value
appears in the below field.

3. Enter this into your Touch, ignoring the percent % signs.

The rating I decide on for a product when I receive feedback from the

Then this reader can only conclude the disparity between ratings is
that the Oppo’s “performance in its fundamental role” is not based on

Unless, of course, someone has 'helped' and told flac to encode at some
other bit rate... flac will happily convert 16/44.1 to 24/96... which
will do two things: create larger files and corrupt fidelity (ie, it
won't sound better, even though 96 is better than 44.1, the extra
bits are made up from thin air), neither of which is considered
beneficial.

If your source is CD, the sample rate should always be 16/44.1. It is
not disappointing, it is reality. If you want a higher sample rate,
you'll need to source something other than CD's on any player.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Music File Formats (from a new user)

2010-10-05 Thread Bigboris

Greetings from a new Squeezebox touch owner.

My question is about music file formats.
I have been using mp3's and aac's for years.
Just fine for portable units and car audio.

I am planing to use my new Touch in an audiophile grade stereo system.
I haven't started the task of copying my complete CD collection in full
quality to a hard drive.
I have started using a ripping program called EAC (exact audio copy).
I can write the files as flac, or wav.
with the price of storage nowadays, I'm leaning toward .wav files.
Is there any advantages, or disadvantages to either?
will the Touch or the SBS program recognize flac tags, and/or wav
tags?
(Is there such a thing as .wav tags?)

Thanks,
Mike

Welcome to Squeezebox world!

I'd vote for FLAC. It is still lossless and offers far better tag
support. As your collection grows, that becomes a bigger and bigger
issue.

I've done back-to-back comparisons of WAV vs FLAC as well as CD to FLAC
and I find no difference in sound quality.

Of course, that's one of those subjects where there is no shortage of
opinions. In that light, perhaps it is worth it for you to spend some
time running a few experiments and then do what makes the most sense to
you.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Music File Formats (from a new user)

2010-10-05 Thread Mnyb

FLAC ! Tagging is crucial to a good squeezebox experience and lossles is
lossles .

btw sbs transcodes wav to flac anyway to save bandwith on your local
network.
This can of course be disabled but a lot of work for nothing .

And FLAC could be sent as wav to player to with some fiddling, but that
is also unnecessary .

Btw FLAC also supports embedded artwork.

Level -5 is good enough compression.

Also make a folder structure like artist/album/track put a folder.jpg
or cover.jpg with the artwork in the folder.

People hear way to much stuff comparing digital audio.

FLAC is very well tried and tested.

If you encode with -V (verify) parameter you test the file while you
are encoding it.

Hi Gents thanks for your feedback but the mystery continues. I do not
seek a higher sample rate than what is native to the CD, the Flac
encoder is the standard WINAMP version and as far as I can see you
cannot vary the rate, even if there is some way of doing this I am not,
therefore all my tracks should be the same rate, so In theory I should
either be able to play none, or all ..

Depending on your version of winamp the standard WINAMP version may
not be up to FLAC standards. See this thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45998.

Your specific symptoms are different, but given that Winamp has been
known to use non-standard FLAC it's at least worth checking out. I
suggest re-ripping with another program and see if the problem
disappears.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Screen Responsiveness

2010-10-05 Thread firedog

Hi-

I don't find it too responsive. Rather I find it too small for its
intended use. On the more crowded screens (such as an album song list
or playlist) it is easy to accidentally press the wrong line, as they
are close together.

Also the buttons like next and repeat on the Now Playing screen
are too close together, and the wrong one is also often accidentally
pressed.

In addition, I think to really be useful from across a room (even about
3m), the screen needs to be significantly larger.

All that said, since I sit close to the Touch at my listening position.
I liked it enough that I sold my Duet controller, as it became clear to
me that it had become just a paper weight.

You can generally FIND album art on amazon.com.
You CAN embed it within FLAC files using MP3Tag... or you can just save
it as cover.jpg in the music tracks folder if you are doing whole
albums.

WinAmp is a great program for many things, but ripping is not one of
it's strong points.
If you want to get serious about your lossless music then you need a
serious ripper with great error correction and standardized formats.

Two examples of well known and well thought of ripping programs:
EAC - great, free, not very intutive.
dbPowerAmp - great, very intuitive, but not free.

My 2 cents worth.

I got the Touch in July. I am still in the process of ripping all my
850 CDs to FLAC. I am up to 350 CDS and still counting.

My FLACS are in a QNAP NAS streaming to my HiFi. I have the Touch
connected via L/R RCA Analogue to my pre-amp. Sounds fantastic.

I use dbPoweramp to rip the CDs to FLAC at default settings which I
think is -5 compression.

I can find the album art via google images. Keep them no more then
500x500 but I use 300x300.

Whenever I rip a CD I always do a fresh scan of the cover art. I like
to have fairly large (around 940X940 but always less than 1MB file
size) cover art since I use Moose
(http://www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove/) running on my desktop and
laptop computers as a front end since Moose offers super quick access
to my music library. With Moose you can display the cover art quite
large (about a 1/2 of the screen) so large looks great. The larger
cover art also looks quite nice on the Touch as well.

BTW, I also use dbpoweramp for all my CD ripping and other codec
related tasks, such as converting from one format to another. And I use
mp3tag as well. However you can set all the various tagging and file
naming options from within dbpoweramp so that all you have to do, aside
from the occasional tidying up, is add cover art and you ready to go.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Review in upcoming Stereophile issue

2010-10-05 Thread guidof

The comparisons with the Oppo BDP-83 suggested a little experiment.
First, I listened to two recordings, one a physical 24/96 DVD-Audio
issued by HDTapeTransfers and one a 24/192 download burned to
DVD-Audio, using the Oppo as a transport with its digital output
connected to the DAC in my Cambridge Azur CD player.

Then I listened to the straight downloads of the same recordings, this
time using the SBTouch as a transport feeding the Cambridge Azur DAC
through its digital output.

I also altered the order of these comparisons.

To my ears, the sound quality was noticeably better with the Touch,
more lifelike, with more air, more musical.

If the Oppo is in Stereophile Class B (albeit presumably on the basis
of analog outputs that were deemed to be mediocre enough to justify an
improved SE version), where might this little experiment suggest the
Touch should be classified?

[SlimDevices: Touch] Stutter at startup on 24/96 FLAC

2010-10-05 Thread TerryS

Hi. New guy here with a small issue with my Touch. I searched a bit,
and I see some discussions on this, but no resolution other than maybe
it should be gone in 7.5.1 (it isn't).

When I first start playing a song in an album that is in flac format at
24/96 (level 5 encoding), the song starts playing for a couple of
seconds, then stops, displays re-buffering and then starts back up
after a couple of seconds. After that, the rest of the album plays
fine. This only happens with 24/96 flac, not 16/44 flac. It doesn't
always happen. Maybe 50% of the time. I can't seem to pin down why it
happens some times but not others. I think I am doing everything the
same.

My system:
Touch running 7.5.1 r9009
Squeezebox server running Version: 7.5.1 - r30836
The server is installed on a QNAP NAS (TS-110)using SSOTS release 4.8
.
The Touch uses a wireless (Wi-Fi) link to my router. The NAS is wired
(ethernet) to the router.

I tried changing the settings on the Advanced - File types page from
the default:
File format
FLAC

Stream Format Decoder
FLAC Native
MP3 flac/lame
PCM flac

To
Stream Format Decoder
FLAC Disabled
MP3 flac/lame
PCM flac

and to
Stream Format Decoder
FLAC Native
MP3 flac/lame
PCM Disabled

but neither setting helped. If anything, it was worse with FLAC
Disabled.

Is there anything else I should try?
Thanks,
Terry

There seems to be something amiss with the Touch Now Playing screen.
I'm playing music using the Custom Browse plugin. If I change to a
different album, the Now Playing screen and playlist don't seem to
 update to the new album.

I see the same issue, but it looks to me as Custom Browse's
limitation. Same behavior on old Id3k devices (SB3/Transporter).

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Stutter at startup on 24/96 FLAC

2010-10-05 Thread Mnyb

Try this

1, wire the touch to the router (for test only, listen trough
headphones for example, if you dont happpen to have a long cat5 cable
around).

2, Try with the server installed on a computer.

3, Wired touch and server running on a computer.

You should not disable flac with such tiny cpu 800mHz marvel and 256Mb
of ram ?
The music then has to be transcoded to PCM/WAV and that uses up a lot
of cpu
