[SlimDevices: Touch] Any difference in sound ethernet vs wireless?

2011-01-01 Thread Atver

I have no wireless issues, just wondering if the Touch sounds
better/different using a hard wire connection? Thanks

Hello and welcome!

Let's have some background info, please:
1. Do you have SB Server on your computer, or intend to use the Touch
with a USB drive?
2. Do you have some other files, MP3 perhaps, that you can play on the
Touch (to verify it is set up and running correctly)?
3. What computer/OS and version?

Thanks for the explanation, John.

I'm going to be traveling for the next week and a half (including
attending CES) and so won't be able to give this a shot until after
that.

If anyone else has a Streamer II+ and wants to give John's test a shot,
I for one will be anxious to learn of the results.

Otherwise, I'll get to this test after I return.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Pandora causes endless reboots

2011-01-01 Thread Henry66

If I select Pandora and go to any station, my Touch immediately reboots
and then sits there rebooting repeatedly. To recover I have to
disconnect the ethernet cable, wait for it to boot up, then select

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Instructions for connecting USB DAC to Touch

2011-01-01 Thread JohnSwenson

What I'm trying to determine is if the problem is the driver not
handling the asynchronous interface correctly, or if its something else
such as general busyness causing under-runs.

There are two crystals in the Touch, one used for 44.1 and 88.2 and the
other for 48 and 96. If the problem is the asynchronicity not working
correctly the ticks will be caused by the DAC clock being at a slightly
different frequency than the Touch clock. The difference between DAC and
touch clocks will be different with the two crystals. Sooo if the
problem is the feedback not working properly the rate or patterns of
ticks should change when going from 44.1 to 48.

If it doesn't change when changing sample rates, then its something.
Its very important to make this determination so we can focus our
attention on the right things.

[SlimDevices: Touch] how to set time?

2011-01-01 Thread codenut

Hi

For some reason my digital clock screensaver stopped working today all
of a sudden. (latest firmware on squeezebox touch). I logged in via ssh
and looked in /var/log/messages and it showed that the time was not
correct:

Jan 2 09:54:14 squeezeplay: WARN applet.Clock - ClockApplet.lua:840
This device does not seem to have the right time: Fri Jan 2 09:54:14
1970

I can't find an option in the settings menu to set the date/time or
make it sync via NTP or whatever.

Anybody seen this before?

Are they FLAC files? Windows Media Player doesn't play FLAC natively.
I think there may be a plug available for WMP that does, but just
install Winamp and it should play them.

Have you placed the files in a directory where Squeezebox Server will

OK. I downloaded sample files from HDTracks.com.

When I right click on them and choose properties, it tells me they are

The Squeezebox does NOT recognize them when I rescan my library, or
scan for new music. Windows Media Player does not play them on the pc

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] A DAC for the SB

2011-01-01 Thread Alco

Here's a picture I made of the dac I'm using with my SB Touch.

[image: http://members.home.nl/koerts/Metrum_dac_close-up.JPG]

It's a small, handmade yet affordable dac called the *Metrum NOS mini
DAC*.

I ordered it blindly, without any try-before-you-buy option, after only
1 raving review on a populair Dutch HiFi-site. (sorry, only in Dutch)

It's made by a company that's more specialized in electrostatic
speakers, but they sure have a hit with this little dac. It can only be
ordered directly from the manufacterer, and the current waiting-list is
8-10 weeks, and the price has gone up about 20% since yesterday.

Nevertheless,...for only €345,- (I paid €295,- about 5
weeks ago) it's a steal.
My previous dac was the Cambridge dacmagic (hooked up to my previous SB
Classic), but the Cambridge dac didn't do anything for the SB Touch.

The Metrum NOS dac is in a different leaque and especially excels in
the mids, making voices sound breathtaking natural. Also the soundstage
becomes bigger/deeper.

Too bad this little dac is prety rare and there's no (English) review
or dealer network for it. I think it would sell like hot-cakes if they
were available at HiFi-shops.

Only small downside could be that it's only availabe in silver and it
comes with a small wall-wart PSU. (although it has an XLR plug at the
dac-side)

1. There are many. Just run an internet search. It will depend on
which music you like. Linn Studio Master downloads are good and
definitely high res. There is a sampler album.
2. Don't know, sorry.
3. Settings > Advanced > Time Zones
4. No, FLAC files will download OK. Linn, for example, (see 1)
currently has some free "Christmas gift" sample tracks.
http://www.linnrecords.com/recording-linn-christmas-gift.aspxThere
are also test-tones and clips. Studio Master FLAC files are excellent,
but not cheap. There are many other sources, I have no vested interest!

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is how it
goes:

1. When you manually add artwork to one of your music folders, the
only way the Touch will see new artwork is to do a complete SBS clear
and rescan. The "rescan changed items" will not, for time being, pick
up artwork changes.

2. When you rip a new disk, I believe the VBA software forces the SBS
to do a complete clear and rescan. That's why your new music AND
artwork show up when you rip a new disk without having to do the manual
clear and rescan.

3. As far as I know, FLAC is FLAC no matter which software you use to
produce it. There are different compression levels (I believe the VBA
is set to use the default, normal "5" but otherwise, everything else
being equal, ripping to FLAC on the VBA is exactly the same as ripping
to FLAC using DBpoweramp or EAC.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Another SB Touch vs. Sonos dilemma

2011-01-01 Thread froth

Well I thought I would never write this type of post but after much
consideration here are my thoughts.

If you want something that provides a similar experience to an
appliance type product like a Television or FM radio with limited
options, then Sono's is the way to go. I own Squeezebox technology and
really do understand networking and computers as it is my livelihood. I
find like many posters noted, it really is not the slim / squeeze
technology but the wifi side of things that really cause issues. I
find that streaming to multiple devices and then having users in my
house who also do a lot of file downloads and such can cause some
dropouts. Given I understand what is happening I can make some
adjustments and explain the issues. However, I have friends that have
Sonos installs who are not technical, a remote is tough for them to work
at the best of times, and really never have any issues with their
setups. If they had a squeeze setup they would have issues that they
would not be able to deal with. They of course could not have some of
the creative plugins that we have in the squeeze technology, but then
again they do not care nor know what they are missing.

I chose Slim products as I really liked what they were doing and I am
technical so it was a great fit. I like open source items, I like that
people can develop add on’s and running a server is not a problem for
me. But in hind sight, I find that even in my household my squeeze
setup can be a challenge for some of my family members. For example,
my wife always has a problem when I am out of town. I try to make it
easy for her but she wants multiple devices synced and struggles. We
have itouch / iphone with ipeng which should be easy for her but there
are always issues. I preset one of my boom’s (one of the best squeeze
products imho) buttons with all her favorite music selections and that
is great, but having her do more is a challenge. She has used some of
our friends Sonos systems and has always said the same thing to me, in
regards to how easy and understandable it is to do something and get
something playing with the Sonos.

I will continue to run Squeeze products however I am holding off buying
anymore at this time until I understand more of what Logitech is doing
in this area and overall media strategies. I could use 2 more booms
and possibly if I could get them on a deal I would probably buy them.
In recent months I have noticed the price on Sonos bundles dropping so
although they may not get down to the squeeze range it may be close
enough for some buyers to go with Sonos.

I agree with all of this. My setup includes one touch, one boom, one
radio, two duets and two SB3s ('classic'), all controlled via iPhone
using the wonderful iPeng.

The best advice I can give you is to use Squeezebox over Sonos, BUT, to
set your router to give each its own static IP address (NOT your IP
address with your ISP, just a static IP address to each squeezebox on
your local network). That means your squeezebox equipment is always 'at
the same location' to the other SB equipment and to the router. It makes
a REAL difference to system reliability - more than anything else, so
long as your internet connection is decently fast.

Cheers

Mark

built-in server (Version: 7.5.2 r.31142) on the SB Touch. The Touch
won't play the first and last track listed in the cue sheet and the
Touch display says "Problem: Unable to play file type for:..." for
these two tracks. The tracks between them (from the 2nd one to the next
to last one) play OK. It seems to parse the cue sheet OK since all
tracks show up as they should in the tracklist on the Touch.

The same mp3 files with corresponding cue sheets play OK in the web
interface on the Squeezebox Server (Version: 7.5.2 r.31632) installed
on my PC, so this problem seems to be related to the built-in server on
the Touch only.

Has anyone the same problem? Could be anyone of any help?

SB Touch firmware version: 7.5.1 r.9218
SB Touch internal server version: 7.5.2 r.31142

Yes if you know what your are doing, otherwise it can be waste of time
to not limit options before hand.

“There is no right way to do a wrong thing”

For example It would be a waste to use the phono input and "try for
yourself" .
Or do multiple AD and DA stages when the same products has a cleaner
path.

The SqueezeBox players make it very easy to compare it's audio outputs
because all outputs are always "active".
So you could easily connect each of the three outs (analog, coax,
optical) to three different source inputs on your AVR. While playing a
stream just switch between those inputs on your AVR's remote.

As with all audio, listen and compare for yourself. ;)
