Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] My Album Art went poof!
The 7.5.4 is now an official firmware release (and not a beta version any more). I've tested it for a few days now and it works great with my attached USB hard drive. Faster navigation, and all mp3 album art (folder and embedded) is showing fine. From what I have read the more careful one is about the things they can control-tags, artwork etc the more likely they are to be successful. But maybe this thread is not about using the Touch w an external HDD anymore, but a discussion of the relative merits of different software versions as used in any possible situation. That being said I have been running w an external HDD w 500GB of FLAC files for months now using 7.5.2 and would see no reason to update to a newer version. If I were on a network and interested in a bunch of plugins etc maybe I would update if they were supported in a new version but not the old. Do not mean to upset anyone, sorry if I did. DaveKen;622183 Wrote: Hi Phil, I'll try to answer your questions (as I understand them) in order: My Music Folder IS foobarFLACs but it has nearly 200 folders in it, mainly under Artist's Name but also under Oldies, Classical Stuff etc. It is mainly FLAC tracks but there are a few .wav tracks where, in the past, I have tried to compare FLAC and .wav versions of the same track. Regarding the 'no tags', these mainly date from my early days of ripping when I didn't really understand what I was doing and managed to rip files without tags - some are .wav and some are FLAC format. If I open foobar on the PC it shows 8 playlists only (Default, Oldies, Every FLAC, Christmas, Classics, Electronic, Audio CD and Unknown, but my Touch may well have 27 Playlist files (not counted them) - these date from when I was trying to organise my Touch to provide Playlists and could not get it to work as I thought it should so I abandoned the attempt. The collection of files in foobarFLACS originated from various sources, most were ripped by me, mainly using dbPoweramp but the earlier ones by EAC (which I stopped using because dbPoweramp was so much quicker), some are downloaded from friends using DropBox and FileMail, some were copied from a portable hard drive that I and a couple of forum friends shipped around between us to swap tracks - most are standard (ex-CD) resolution but there are also a number of Hi-Res (24/96 and 24/192) tracks amongst the Music Folder. My whole library is shown by a Touch rescan to comprise: Total Tracks 10,690, Total Albums 912, Total Artists 1,629, Total Genres 699. Hope this provides the answers that you need. I'm not a newbie with computers but this field is completely new to me. I have just bought and got up and running a Synology DS111 and have ordered a Squeezebox Touch, which is expected shortly - to be ethernet networked via powerline networking. However, I can't make head nor tail of which of the following SB servers I should install and how I get them installed, if indeed they're the right ones... my PCs are Win 7 32 bit if that has any bearing on this. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Very basic questions, no doubt - which one and how
Are you going to run the squeeze server on the pc or on the synology? If you are going to run it on the synology you go to the synology site and poke around. You should find it under 3rd party or similar. I have a synology DS207+ and I loaded the server software on that at first. I can tell you that it will not be very speedy. Next I installed the squeezebox server software on my pc and it is so much faster and responsive it is unbelievable. I have my server software running on my windows 7 machine and I have enough hard drives in that computer that I just put all my music on one of the computers hard drives. An internal harddrive is much faster than a synology drive running across the network. It is very very noticable how much faster it is. Whenever I would do a delete everything and rescan my music on the Synology it would take forever to get everything reindexed. When I do it on a local drive on my computer it does a complete rescan, index, album art refresh, etc. in about 7 minutes and I have a lot of music and a lot of it is Hi Res music (files are much larger than standard CD quality files). I do however use NTI to run a backup of my music every night to the synology. -- edmondwolfman edmondwolfman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=40367 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86717 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Album Covers sometimes appears question
Embedded art works fine, but every once in a while it can cause a little problem. I recently downloaded an album from HDtracks that had embedded art in each track. Unfortunately the art was 1400 x 1400 (238kb) and the large size of the image caused SBS/Touch to have a big hairball. The result was a huge burst of static when I tried to play the tracks...no music whatsoever. I had to use MP3tag to remove the embedded art from each track and then put a smaller jpeg in with the traditional cover.jpg file and all was solved...So embedded art, unless you put it in yourself and are careful with file and image size, can cause this sort of issue. edmondwolfman;622233 Wrote: Do you have your art as a jpg in the same folder as the music or have you embedded it into each file? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Can you use Internet TV to Control Squeezbox?......
I can't imagine you could hack the TVs to run SBS, but if you can pull up a web browser on the tv you can point it to http://SBS_ip:9000/ (where you substitute the IP address of your server in place of SBS_ip) and control it via the usual web ui. That is, if you running SBS on a PC or NAS. If you are using the Touch's built-in server (TinySBS) then you can't control it via the web ui. At some point in the future the Logitech Revue, a set-top box for internet (Google) tv may incorporate SBS. On Synology's advice I avoided the 'j' series for Squeezebox and bought the next one up with 256MB RAM 1.6 GHz CPU etc and probably naively assumed all would be fine . I had thought that a NAS box was a much more efficient way of streaming my music - like you I only use either CD quality or Hi-Res files (FLAC). The idea of leaving my main (overclocked) Win 7 machine switched on with its 850W PSU and multiple HDDs dismays me a bit. I have saved very noticeably on my electricity bill by using my laptop as much as I can and not leaving the main PC whirring away. I'll have to try both ways and if it's as bad as you say I'll have to forgo the convenience of the NAS with its scheduled powering on and off etc. Shame, as it's use would reduce to storing the family pictures - a bit of overkill. But... I found the SB software on Synology's site ending in .spk (as above) but have no clue as to how I go about installing it on anything. Any pointers? Thanks for getting back. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Very basic questions, no doubt - which one and how
Try running SBS on your laptop. Or, buy a used laptop as your server, very low energy consumption yet you have a full computer with a complete (and familiar to you) OS. Unfortunately, many come to the same conclusion as you have regarding NAS usage as a server. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86717 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] My new SB Touch won't accept WEP password
I would go with WPA regardless of your lack of a need for security. As someone stated above, it's likely to be better tested that WEP authentication. Unless you have some wireless computer or device that can't use WPA. Use a fairly short passphrase if you want to make it easier (but less secure). Squeezeboxes tend to remember things in their network setup that you don't want them to. So do a factory reset of the Touch. Hold down the reset button on the back for about 15 seconds or so, until you see a message something like Restoring factory settings. Then try going through the setup again. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86696 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

No problem at all and the synology is not such a bad choice. Go to this site http://www.synology.com/support/download.php?lang=enub=1%20baysm=DS111 and load this software: To run Logitech® Squeezebox Server on Synology DiskStation (with Synology DSM2.2-0958 and onward). An interesting possibility. What's strange though is that I can use MediaMonkey on my laptop, which indexed my several thousand HI-RES track collection with no problem and plays it from the NAS to the laptop with no problem. Is it that Squeezebox's server is just very inefficiently coded and that's where the problem lies rather than with the NAS hardware specs? Thanks. NMarshall;622035 Wrote: The SB Touch will not accept my WEP password for connection by wireless. I have disabled/checked all Squeezebox entries on my Norton firewall, so it's not that. When I open the Web Control of Squeezebox Server on my PC, I see mysqueezebox.com and SB Touch in the Player tag (top rh corner) - the former is in bold, the latter in light face. If I click on SB Touch I am not allowed to switch from mysqueezebox.com. This means that the Touch is connected to the network and that the server sees the Touch. And it means that the Touch is currently connected to mysqueezebox.com. You have no problems with WEP. If you did you'd see error messages on the Touch about not being able to connect to the network. The SB Touch is not recognised in Server Settings. No, it won't be shown in Settings while it's connected to mysqueezebox.com. If I connect the SB Touch to my 2-wire wireless router with an ethernet cable, it happily connects to mysqueezebox.com. From the above description, it sounds like it was connected to mysqueezebox.com when connected wirelessly. If I change the name of the SB Touch, the change is seen in the squeezebox server web control. Again, that's more evidence that the Touch is connected to the network and that the server sees the Touch on the network. Any thoughts as I'm rather frustrated! I take it what you're trying to do is get the Touch connected to your local Squeezebox Server. If you're trying to do this from the web interface you may be running into this fairly major bug: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15396 You should be able to do it from the Touch itself, however, by going into My Music. If the Touch sees your server then it will prompt you to switch from mysqueezebox.com. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86696 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I think you're making a couple of erroneous comparisons here. First, MediaMonkey is running on your laptop, not your NAS. Squeezebox Server (SBS) should also run fine on your laptop, so where is the inefficiency? Second, MediaMonkey and SBS are very different programs. MM is an all-purpose media management, ripping, tagging, playing tool. SBS does pretty much one thing: stream data from a digital music library to one or more Squeezeboxes. As far as I know MM plays exactly one stream to one player, no more. SBS, on the other hand, can send different streams to different SBs, or send the same stream to multiple SBs and have them play in perfect sync. It's comparing apples and grapefruit. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86717 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
